Mohan and Ambika are neighbours in a low middle class area. Mohan is jobless and is often chided by his father . His mother S Varalakshmi ( I like her voice ) is the typical mum - sacrificing , loving , caring , forgiving . Ambika works in a government department and is a dutiful daughter . After the initial hiccups both fall in love . Mohan wants to go to Madras to pursue his career in movies. Both agree that they should get married before he leaves. He marries Ambika by tying a Mangalsutra on her neck without anyone's knowledge and goes. Without knowing this , her father arranges for a groom for Ambika but every one soon realises that she is already married . This starts squabbles between the two families . Mohan finds success after a lot of problems in Madras and he is on his way back home to Coimbatore with the good news. At the same time , Ambika , unable to bear her father's tantrums , runs away to Madras to meet him. She is molested on her way in the train and commits suicide . Mohan , in the end becomes senile . I don't like sad , unhappy endings . But this drew lot of women audience with heavy references to mangalsutra , pujas , marriage etc., S V Shekar has a serious glum role here which is way way away from his usual comedy oriented ones .
