  • I sat down to watch the 2022 Italian movie "Diabolik: Ginko All'attacco!" (aka "Diabolik: Ginko Attacks!") shortly after having sat down to watch the 2021 movie "Diabolik", which I rather enjoyed.

However, writers Antonio Manetti, Marco Manetti and Michelangelo La Neve dropped the ball here. This 2022 sequel was nowhere as entertaining or enjoyable as the 2021 movie. And that was rather disappointing, especially since "Diabolik: Ginko All'attacco!" hardly felt like it belonged as a sequel, since the Diabolik character wasn't really given all that much screen time.

Luca Marinelli played Diabolik in the 2021, but he had been replaced by Giacomo Gianniotti, whom had zero charisma and both looked and felt like a fish out of water on the screen. Does see Valerio Mastandrea and Miriam Leone return to reprise the roles of Ispettore Ginko and Eva Kant respectively.

There wasn't much of any burglary, thieving, heists, or much of anything going on in "Diabolik: Ginko All'attacco!", and that made sitting through 116 minutes of this movie from directors Antonio Manetti and Marco Manetti quite a tiresome ordeal. Yet, I managed to endure the movie, thinking that something was bound to liven up the movie as the clock was running out, but nothing happened.

"Diabolik: Ginko All'attacco!" was a slap to the face with a cold dead fish if you enjoyed the 2021 movie.

My rating of "Diabolik: Ginko All'attacco!" lands on a generous four out of ten stars.
  • I'm not a big fan of the character, but I like the dark and mature universe of the comic. The adaptation seems to me quite faithful to what I have read.

The costumes, the location, the actors, the script, all the ingredients were there to make a descent movie.

The only problem is the lack of talent of the directors (although two). The acting is not very coherent. There are a lot of weird and uninspired shots and the cutting reminds me of Sam Raimi's early work.

It's less mature and violent than the previous one, it has lost some of the toxic mood there was with it's psychopath hero and most murders are off-screen. The actor has been replaced by another with a more pleasant physique, but without the nuances of his predecessor.

Monica Bellucci doesn't bring much to the film, Miriam Leone (the hero's girlfriend) and Valerio Mastandrea (the inspector) do a good job.

No doubt, this movie is very bad, much worse than predecessor, even worse than the worst comic-book episode. Plot is naïve with lot of illogical points. One has to invest a lot of suspension of disbelief if wants to endure it. But... If you do not take it seriously, you can relax and enjoy it. So bad that it is good, great guilty pleasure, genuine camp. By the way, reconstruction of 1960s is nice, with great accessories and, of course, Italian cars and Italian cities (with my favorite Trieste).

Ms. Bellucci's acting was so bad that I think she was self-ironical and intentionally making fun of the movie. I prefer Mr. Marinelli from the first movie as Diabolik. Better actor with charisma and better looks for main character. Mr. Gianniotti luckily does not have a lot of screen time what is kind of ironic too. Ms. Leone is gorgeous as always.

The movie is overall very nice and enjoyable. Nice reconstruction of the Diabolik world. Nice costumes. Nice cartoonish scenography. Good overall acting for such kind of film. Just one big stain on it... and therefore a big question..... why to ruin an overall well made movie with the horrible acting of Monica Bellucci and why choose (or accept) to soft focus (or photoshop) her face (and only her) all around the movie when she appear in the scenes? I know... her presence will probably open additional markets to the movie... but I stil don't understand.... Maybe she paid to be in the film if soft focused?
  • As a real fan of Diabolik (I still hold the first 690 original set of comics books), I can say that I preferred the first movie, this second episodes ok has the same noir/comic slow action which is good, it brings a new actor as Diabolik (vote: 8) and I say he is perfect, cute guy like in the comic books and the eyes and the face reminds the original character, Miriam Leone again as a perfect Eva Kant (vote:8) .. but what is missing: ... the refuge is the same as in the 1st movie, too many shots are on Ginko (we have to digest actor Mastandrea with his Roman accent.. vote 5.... and Ginko was a cute man in the comics!), then a catastrofing acting by Monica Bellucci (vote 3 for me ... the actress is the anthitesis of the high class of Altea...). The overall rating is just as flat as a six.

The benchmark for cinematic Diabolik remains the classic 1960s Maria Bava version.

The previous modern Diabolik was pretty bad but this one doesn't even reach that low bar.

    The lead actor exemplifies blandness.

A generic Euro pretty boy with no acting chops.

    The story is poor.

Did we really need a Ginko romantic sub-plot that goes no where ?

    Monica Belluci is totally wasted.

Being filmed in the digital equivalent of the Vaseline smeared lense did her no favors.

The only saving grace was Miriram Leones as Eva Kant.

How did this dreck even get made ?

    Let's hope there isn't a third one !
  • The sequel beats the same path as Diabolik (2021): a stylistic throwback to the 1960s and the (European mystery) cinema of the time, with a close adaptation of the feeling of the comic book. Unfortunately this means that it carries all the flaws of its predecessor, coming across as somewhat flat in performance, or didactic in the exposition. The overall vibe of the first movie was interesting enough to make it worth watching, but now the novelty effect starts to wear off. Isn't the planned trilogy too much, an experiment that has gone on for too long not to come across as self-serving?

The new plot doesn't make up for it. Eva Kant is replaced as the real focus of the film by Ginko, the police inspector relentlessly trying to track down Diabolik (like Ganimard to Lupin). Unfortunately, he's not as captivating of a character as Ms. Kant. Luca Marinelli has been replaced by Giacomo Gianniotti as the actor performing Diabolik, and thankfully he's barely given any screentime: while he may be physically more convincing he's less skilled than Marinelli and he's nowhere mysterious or charismatic enough for anyone to believe he should be this story's lead. Monica Bellucci simply shouldn't have been cast.

Not terrible, but it's a notch down from the first and it's increasingly showing a lack of direction. I worry for what's to come.
  • This film isn't satisfying. The image of the king of terror is a mirage. The character of Diabolik is difficult to represent in a film but the choice of this actor is a mistake bigger than the choice of the actor of the first film. Gianniotti is a gorgeous man but the beauty of this man isn't different from the sex appeal of Diabolik. His apparitions aren't unexpected and spectral but to tell the truth with this man the character of Diabolik results boring.

Valerio Mastrandrea as Ginko results better than Diabolik but worse than in the first film. The reason probably is the general plot of the story too long and with very few action scenes and for a Diabolik's story is a fatal error.

Monica Bellucci as Althea is an evanescent character, totally extraneous from the story.

The only character that is very well characterized is Eva Kant, interpreted by Miriam Leone, that is similar to Eva not only for physical elements but also for the personality.

No pun intended - I assume you have seen at least the first Diabolik movie (the predecessor for this that is and not the Mario Bava movie from the 60s). With that in mind, all major returning characters are being played by the same actors ... except the one that should matter the most: Diabolik ... it is a different actor altogether! For whatever reason (I did not check for the reason to be honest) ... I won't speculate.

What I can say is that this does not fair as good as the first movie. I can only hope that part 3 ramps things up a bit ... maybe with another Diabolik actor? I would not really be surprised. We get some new characters and actors added - mainly Monica Belucci - if you know her, you probably love or loved her at one time. She still has the charisma - but some people who criticize the movie say she is not close to the characters she is supposed to portray ... something I can't confirm or deny, since I have not read any of the comic books (graphic novels) ... not the best throwback ever (go to the original), but not the worst either.

Danger: Diabolik! May be my favorite movie of all time, so I was nervous when Diabolik came out in 2021. It wasn't perfect, but it wasn't a disappointment. The strange all on a soundstage feel of the movie was quite exciting. Yet I feel that the sequel abandons that to feel more like it fits into our world. Well, it does also have time for Bond-like video segments like the incredible opening number that turns into the credits and the first action scene without ever slowing down.

Directed yet again by Antonio and Marco Manetti, this replaces Luca Marinelli as the antihero Diabolik with Giacomo Gianniotti while smartly keeping Miriam Leone as Diabolik's lover Eva Kant and Valerio Mastandrea as his nemesis Ginko.

After that aforementioned dance/singing/music video/Bondian intro, Diabolik steals the Crown of Armen and the Armen Jewels in short order. Yet he doesn't realize that it's all part of Ginko's plan, as the jewels have been coated with a radioactive tracking substance that permits Ginko and the police to infiltrate one of Diabolik's secret bases.

As Diabolik and Eva escape, she hurts her ankle and the master criminal abandons her to sneak away. The police now have all of Diabolik's wealth, the way that he makes masks and his girl, who Ginko is trying to convert to his side so that he can finally stop Diabolik.

Now, before you come into this cold, you have to realize that Diabolik is kind of a James Bond level character in Italy. Created by sisters Angela and Luciana Giussani, he's a master thief and cold blooded criminal who often steals either for the thrill or because he wants to outdo another criminal. Just as often, he's doing something to upset Ginko, who can never seem to hold him for long.

Based on the sixteenth Diabolik story Ginko All'Attacio, this is a strange movie to introduce an audience unfamiliar with the comics to. It's more about Ginko and his quest than it is Diabolik, who remains in disguise for most of the film. Also, because of how they're kept apart, this has less of the draw of Diabolik and Eva, which at heart is always the reason why I love the series and characters.

This film also introduces Duchess Altea, Inspector Ginko's secret companion, who is played by Monica Bellucci. She's always a welcome sight and having her gives Ginko a near equal partner to Diabolik and Kant.

There's already a third movie and I'll definitely watch it, mostly because I want to see if it also makes a shift in look and feel as this one did. This is shot well, has a pretty exciting soundtrack and sure, it may not be as perfect as Mario Bava, but what movie released in this time has his genius? It's unfair to expect anything to live up to that.

The other thing some may miss is that in the comics, Diabolik went from being a killing machine who didn't care about human life to one with his own code of honor. This didn't happen from story one to story two, but over a few years. There is an abrupt change in here where our lead doesn't kill a police officer that make it feel like he made that leap perhaps too quickly.

Again, maybe I'm still too jazzed over Bava when it comes to this movie or perhaps its that all modern movies seem to be TV movies shot with a little better color balancing and budget, but while this looks like it used its budget, it also struggles to find intriguing camera angles or even attempt to bring a comic to film life. I'm being unfair, but I want a Diabolik movie to knock my eyes out of my head. Not to say this isn't pretty in parts, but broken record, there's so much I want for this movie.

That said -- if you're a fan of the whole Diabolik series, it's nice that the world of superheroes on film is a little less America-centric and that we can get three new movies in as many years.

The end of the story, well, you'll see coming, but here's to where this can go next.

So I was waiting for this film with great anticipation since I had liked the previous one several times before because it was truly a beautiful film by Diabolik and I don't find it right that for the moment he only receives a score of 5.9 on this site please do it a littleraise the vote for me it is truly the most beautiful Italian film the best ever but now I was really waiting for this sequel And instead this film not only left me disappointed but also filled too many things 💩 because this film not only is not up to the level of the previous one movie but it has mereally very bored because it doesn't really have the same beautiful things as the first film So the crazy story of Commissioner Ginko who wants to settle things with his girlfriend Esse Sorry but then what does this story with Diabolik mean rather than a sequel it seems to me instead a spin offginkgo and then ginkgo's girlfriend played by Monica Bellucci is not well done at all and she is a really bad acting actress so the story is really bad but the worst thing is it concerns Diabolik and then I already knew that Luca wouldn't be in it Marinelli hasplayed since he was already busy with another film But now the actor who plays played by Giacomo Gianniotti Well in this film there isn't even a shadow of his ability like Luca Marinelli did because Well because Diabolik appears in this film only for three times and only says fivewords But then the abhorrence that it doesn't really exist in this film since it doesn't always appear which is why I didn't like this film at all and then the title is completely wrong this film should have only been called ginkgo on the attack since the Diabolik aren't there 'it's always in the movie my Godbut why all this Manetti brothers but let's see what the third film that will be released this year will be like Let's hope But I tell you that I don't really like the sequel to the Italian films because the same thing also happened with School of Thieves part two is the boy invisible secondgeneration but now you can also this film It disgusted me to conclude rating 4.5.

    A Diabolik movie without Diabolik.

This film chronicles the comic exploits of the Clerville Police.

Lots of dead moments for a linear plot that tells absolutely nothing. Palmer is probably the main character of the movie?

It looks like an episode of an old TV show. Everything ends exactly as it began.

By the way, what is most disturbing, in my opinion, is the lowering of quality. The photography, the action scenes... the operator doesn't seem to know how to hold a gimbal in his hand. Absurd shots, wrong cuts... what happened?! The first film amazed positively, the second almost makes you laugh.

And least but not last... Monica Bellucci. Please...
