This is the best sci-fi shooter I have ever played, no contest
I decided to pick up the first Mass Effect game and my short review of that is that everything is okay except the freedom of choice, which is excellent. This is the kind of sequel that for the most part fixes every problem with the first game.
Okay so the story after Shepard dies, an extremist group who wants humanity to reign supreme named Cerberus resurrects Shepard because they know that The Collectors are still out there and you must recruit some other people to join you (I was kind of p!ssed off that I didn't get the crew from the first game... Well you get Garrus and Tali'Zorah eventually and they do make cameos depending on which ones lived through your ME1 campaign) to stop an alien race in cahoots with The Reapers called The Collectors.
If there was even the slightest complaint with this game - It has to be the villain. Let me describe to you the villain and tell me this doesn't sound in ANY WAY familiar... An ancient alien hell-bent on destroying all life as we know it with an army at his command. I mean this is the villain from at least a hundred other science fiction games alone. Harbinger is not interesting and to be honest... In the 20½ hour game-play, he only really attempted to stop Shepard twice in the whole game.
Now one of my biggest complaints with the first Mass Effect game is that if you shoot a weapon for long enough it overheats and you're rendered defenseless for the bad guys to kill you for about 20 seconds. Here, there is ammunition... THANK YOU! Some of the characters are very interesting, I really like Thane Krios as a character, I wouldn't mind seeing him in a solo game I think he's that interesting. I also think the side quests are pretty fun... They aren't just "Are they even trying to engage us?" No! I spent hours completing all of them to delay my finishing of this game.
And the freedom of choice is even better. You customize your battle armour and casual appearance and you can also choose what weapons to walk into a fight with as well as upgrade the ship into whatever you want it to be. It even goes over the choices you made in Mass Effect 1 so if you chose to focus everything on Sovereign then The Council will stay dead just as an example.
There is also the ability to grant your squad commands. Here I just see it as something like Star Wars Republic Commando but most of the time the Squad AI is so good that it is simple to just shoot by yourself and have the squad as back-up. Aside from that there's not much else to say except that if you do issue commands like "take cover behind that crate" that they will stay behind that crate unless you order them to come with you after the fight has finished.
So at the end, this game has earned it's place in gaming history as being the first RPG sequel where what you do in the original carries on over in this one (even some scientist that I decided not to kill on a planet in the first game makes an appearance... YEAH little things like that change the gaming experience) I would suggest playing the first game before this one though because if you know nothing about the series... you're screwed from the start. The subplots are great, the characters in some cases are the most interesting I have ever seen in a video game and it is just a ton of fun to play. If you're thinking about playing this series, then play the first one, then play this.
