  • I'd like to think that if I were a TV exec, I would create a subgenre of TV, and call it something like 'indie TV'. There's TV comedies, TV dramas...but no genre to underscore the offbeat vibe of indie film. Sometimes I wonder, if there was such a thing, would the quirkier or more cerebral shows gain the traction they deserve?

Anyway, if 'indie TV' was a genre, "Gravity" would certainly qualify. Alas, it also places on my list of "Shows Canceled Too Soon/Unexpectedly". This rates among "Wonderfalls", "Pushing Daisies" or "Dead Like Me", though definitely lower on the quality side. If you liked these, if you don't mind cynical characters or unconventional- sometimes-outrageous humor; this show just might be for you. The best I can say about the tone of "Gravity" is that it doesn't really have a genre, which is why I think 'indie' is a perfect match for it. Not only are the characters struggling with labels (being suicidal in the past, maybe still, maybe not anymore,) the show struggles to define itself as one thing. Such is life, which is basically why I love the indie vibe so much. "Gravity" is not straight comedy, but it's not exactly grim enough to be a drama - yet, weird as it is - something about this show works. The character of Jorge is my least-favorite (he's just too outrageous for me to like); but Ivan Sergei's character, along with the character of Lily (Krysten Ritter, in one of her first roles) makes "Gravity" just fascinating enough...and Miller? Well, who knows what's up with that guy...too many questions surround him.

I will say that if nothing else - if you do check this one out and you watch it all the way through...prepare to do a double-take toward the end of the last episode.
  • At the start of this series I thought I was going to have to shut it off. All of the main characters were boring and it was like a collection of people I didn't like. I have never been a large fan of Kristen Ritter or Ivan Sergei and I had zero interest in shipping this couple that literally starts out having sex at a drop of a hat. And Jorge's character is downright offensive. However, along comes Detective Miller. As a result of Lizzy's trying to kill herself she meets detective Miller who, as he reminds people, is watching her because suicide is still a crime. As the show goes along it keeps focusing on him. As if he is one of the main cast. At first I thought he was going to end up a member of the suicide group (and perhaps that was the plan for season 2) but it goes another way. I absolutely adored the character and watched the rest of the series to see him. The actor did a great job carving out a troubled but still lovable character that the audience can root for. I would watch the series for him but not feel too guilty about pressing the fast forward button often.
  • I thought this was a great show about a band of no longer suicidal misfits. I love that broken people can fix themselves and find ways to fit with others who also feel out of place in this world.

It took me a second to get used to the way it's shot but something about it adds to the feeling that you're peeking into a part of people's lives that you're not supposed to see. There are definitely absurdest topics and jokes (see all sex scenes with the character Jorge and many of Miller's lines) but it just added another thing to look forward to in each new episode.

I'm probably biased because I identify with a lot of the sentiments on the show and the dark parts that it explored are rarely brought to life.

I am so p!ssed that it is now gone and there is another show that leaves me with lifelong questions as to the fate of beloved characters. Damn you Starz! Can we at least get a mini series or 2 hour wrap up or something?
  • As soon as the first episode starts you cannot be helped for thinking you are watching one of those God awful day time amercian soaps. The sets are bad, the filming is bad, the actors are bad and thats not just due to the script being bad. I nearly gave up about 5 minutes in, but a gratuatous "night, night kitty" arse shot bought them a while longer. When its bad, it really has nothing going for it, but at times I found myself thinking of one of those dreary Cronenberg films like "Spiders" or the one with the rabbits. But unfortunately I do not mean this to be seen as a positive, because Cronenberg only gets away with it because of some of the excellent films he has made. IMDb lists this program as a comedy / drama. In my opinion the comedy is not funny and the drama less than dramatic. Avoid it, it cant possibly last.
  • We're mid way through the first season of Gravity and not surprisingly comments are very diverse. I say it is not surprising because Gravity is a subtle, cognitive, emotional and non-formulaic show which can take some time to get a handle on, but once you do it's a deep-cool trip well worth your while, but you must stay with it like with any relationship of substance that grows at almost imperceptible intervals until its virtues appear in gratifying surprises.

Take the main theme of the show: suicide. Who hasn't contemplated checking out of this dimension from time to time, at least when at the motor vehicle department or more importantly when in a hellish place within our own interior? These are dark, scary places, but it's very cathartic and important to look under the rocks of despair and confront the rawest and most tormented areas of life where the full gamut of emotions and thoughts run wildly, often on a collision course with mortality itself.

For those still on the fence, perhaps some of your angst comes from the non-formulaic nature of the show. There's no shame in admitting that we expect railings and handles in certain places, especially when shambling along in the dim light of a new series that dodges convention at many turns. It takes a while for any show to get traction, but with a little faith there is no doubt in my mind that Gravity will take you on an interesting and fun journey. I know this because Jill Franklyn, the creator, whom I consider a sort of nouveau female incarnate of Woody Allen, is not going to let this thing ever get hum drum. No, no. She has just begun laying down her roller coaster track, not to physically flail you about, but to cavort your heart and mind subtly. And you need to watch carefully to stay on the ride, one that Starz will hopefully allow to continue on its wonderful course.
  • I have seen three episodes. The initial thought was that there has to be some hook or something somewhere to make the audience to come back for more, but so far I am wrong.

The acting is poor, characters flat, 'jokes' not funny, unimaginative script, no twists, no humour, nothing to disgust me, or feel any kind of emotion, or even make me think. It is as entertaining as watching paint dry.

If you are a fan of either House, Dexter, Lost, Chuck, Glee, or the slow paced Justified, then you probably will find this series (so far) very very disappointing, and that is being kind.

Just like chuck opened with Cake's 'Short Skirt, Long Jacket', this should have opened up with a version of "Mad World", but that would have been it's only redeeming feature, and a waste of a good song.

this is my first review, i liked this series so much that i dare to say something about it. the first thing that comes to my mind is: too bad it was canceled so early. i think not many people are ready to watch a show like this. the cast was very strong and the different characters were very well written in my opinion. many parts of the story had a real feel to it. for me it seemed that the weird detective character was used as a tool to push the story along and also as a way to see how people can be damaged from losing an important person in their life and never getting a chance to work through the pain. i loved watching this series and wish they would have given it a proper ending even in form of a comic or a graphic novel. i would also be happy with a note from the creator on how the show would have progressed. all in all i am glad for what i have seen and got out of it. the show made me cry a little and laugh a little. i tried not to get too emotionally involved since i knew it was canceled by the time i started watching it. this series could be for you, if you liked (the first season of) dead like me.
  • judging by the first two episodes: the story is cut into seemly random pieces, but shown are predominantly the unimportant ones. characters are constructed out of parts of various opposite extremes glued together by bad acting in which you can actually see the bad directing. without doubt the actors were not given the chance to try to play their roles. without a clear vision of the director things like this do so very obviously not work. cuts and pictures are all wrong too.

it seems to bee an weekend assignment of a high-school drama class gone wrong. (probably only) from that point of view, all in all, it is quite a charming show.

absolutely fantastic and a must see for anyone enjoying bad movies or the parody of good craftsmanship!

I have to admit this is one of my new favourite shows. My family also loves it. It's original with dark comedy. I can't believe it's not as popular as my other favourite shows such as Glee and Big Bang Theory. It really helps to bring you down to earth and find joy in the little things. Such as Carla, in the show, finds joy in killing a cockroach. It reminds me in a way of Pushing Daisies and I strongly hope that this show does not end up getting cancelled after two seasons like Pushing Daisies. Please continue more episodes, I think this show could really catch on. I first discovered it The Movie Network On Demand and have been hooked ever since. The characters really show that death can open up many windows, as they find love and pursue the dreams they never never thought of reaching for. They realize that they would have missed out on all this if they had succeeded in suicide. I'd recommend it to anyone.
  • From the first episode onward, this series got my attention. It's original, deals with a powerful subject (suicide), has excellent characters, and the comedy is hysterical in places you'd least expect. This series held nothing back, it covered sex, obsession, death, inward thoughts, depression, jokes, conflicts and a cop (one of the directors), who you'd probably think is on meth the entire time. The finale, while having not a large audience, left a major cliff hanger to a mystery that was throughout the 10 episodes: Who the heck is that cop, anyways?

There are not that many people that watch shows like these with the assumption that "bird poop" is a sign of a bad series, but these people usually tend to stick with pathetic, uneducated, unoriginal TV shows like Honey boo-boo.
  • deep, funny and enjoyable. Eric has another winner. Thank you. great characters. well acted. can't wait till the next episode. Beautiful dark stories. Should be viewed by teenagers and the impressionable. Eric brings to life the thoughts and feelings that we all have about love and life. I am so happy this art is not on network TV so all the levels and depths can be touched of this taboo subject. This has the makings of the greats like The Saprano's, Deadwood, In treatment, Dexter and the United states of Tara. It looks like Starz is getting into the intelligent television business with Spartacus, Party on, and now Gravity. Just remember you don't have to go years between seasons. I am hoping that the suits leave this one alone. I know a great show like swingtown would have thrived had it not been on network TV. So suits, remember, you are not on network TV and Eric Schaefer was not meant to be on network. Go Gravity. Thanks Eric!

i've just finished the season and sad to find it didn't had a 2nd- what the hell happened??? i found it to b weird, funny and a really good drama (that Miller is a piece of work)the actors are good and the story lines r interesting...its a nice insight to life after,

i don't wanna give away any of the show but along the episodes u find each of the character's suicide story while discovering new things on Miller - i think he is the weirdest-craziest-scary and even touching character... Krysten Ritter proves she's great.

    i think i'll look up now why is this been cancelled;

anyway even tough it is brutally cut at the end - u should see it :)

  • Wake up... plez bring this stellar cast and amazing writers back and continue their stories. We need more "not status quo" tv programs, we desperately crave more original content and relatable characters. I was hooked after the first episode, and just like a good book l could not stop watching. l was amazed and awed by the cast chemistry, the fluidity of the humor peppered through it. l am a suicide survivor and can appreciate that finally someone has written an honest and definitely insightful and unadultrated perspective many suicidal's actually believe and experience. Plez bring this amazing show back and continue the healing and education...we so desperately need it in today's world - even 10 years later the show content is timeless!
