  • When you watch this show, it is hard to not be in stitches at what Karl says. Ricky's laugh also adds some comedic value to some of what Karl has said.

This show includes much dialogue from the earlier podcasts of Gervais, Merchant and Pilkington, but has been given a kind of Hanna Barbera- esque animated backdrop. We are treated to scenes during the conversations to give us an idea of how this would/did happen in real life. It also includes newer dialogue, i.e. An Idiot Abroad is even mentioned in some episodes.

Despite the fact that the Show is called "The Ricky Gervais Show", the real star is Karl Pilkington. I assume it was called this because Ricky was more famous than Karl when the podcasts started (if Karl was famous at all at this point). Fans of Ricky's laugh will not be disappointed to hear it in most, if not all, episodes, usually after Karl has given his point of view on something.

I would highly recommend that you watch this, along with "An Idiot Abroad", which also stars Karl Pilkington, but with less screen time for Gervais and Merchant.

Rating: Please see top of the review.
  • STAR RATING: ***** Saturday Night **** Friday Night *** Friday Morning ** Sunday Night * Monday Morning

Having conquered the worlds of TV and film (if not quite pop music!) Ricky Gervais proved he also had something to add to the world of pod cast entertainment, with his regular pod casts featuring long time writing partner Stephen Merchant and, most notably, his former production assistant Karl Pilkington, that all his truly die hard fans would probably have seeked out straight away. Gervais obviously applied his magic touch once again, and proved being funny really seems to be his true calling in life, as they were so successful this off-beat TV spin off show has been created by American giants HBO and not done too badly itself.

The first thing everyone would probably note is the self indulgence in the title, with the most well known member of the trio seemingly held as the main driving force behind the show, when this is an accolade that goes to Pilkington, with his unusual musings on life and how he'd make the world a better place. Despite his opinionatedness, he comes across as a softly spoken, gentle person, while Gervais (made to look uncannily like Fred Flintstone!) shouts his mouth off at the incredulousness of what Pilkington says, or at least how he's phrased it. Merchant is left as the proverbial piggy in the middle, gently trying to mediate between the oddball and the matador. No matter how crazy Pilkington can sound, there is some twisted logic to his words, perhaps a little of the George Bush syndrome of having the odd clever thought, just not being able to communicate it well. Some might well say the animation can never hold up to listening on the pod cast and letting your own imagination run wild, which holds true, but the animation probably shows it closer to how Pilkington himself envisaged his odd thoughts, and so delivers the fuller comedic effect.

For those who aren't, or have no intention of, merging with the cyber age, Gervais and HBO have come together and delivered a highly watchable, always volatile and eye opening expose of the world Gervais works in after his trek to super stardom. ****
  • There's something so irresistible about Karl Pilkington. I discovered him through the books first. Then I enjoyed watching An Idiot Abroad. I'm not a fan of Ricky Gervais usually, but that doesn't matter here. Karl takes all the teasing in his stride and can give as good as he gets. He's not a victim, although it may come across that way to some viewers. Ricky & Steve both love him and if Karl wasn't happy, he wouldn't keep on working with them. The animation is brilliant. The title sequence alone pulls you in. I don't believe there's that much acting involved. Karl is a unique person and his outlook is refreshing. His Diary is always a highlight. One of the funniest series ever, whether or not you heard the original podcasts.

This show is brilliant. It is funny. The fact that one of the reviewers on here downed this show and then, in all seriousness, recommended that you go watch "two and a half men" for good comedy should tell you all that you need to know about that reviewer's tastes. It's not about whether you find Ricky Gervais funny. It's all about Karl. I would say, if you have above average intelligence you will find this funny. If you have below average intelligence, then by all means go watch some of that comedy genius, Charlie Sheen.

Watch this show. You will love it. And if you don't, well, there is something wrong with you.

First of all, I've been listening to these podcasts since the first episode on guardianunlimited.

These 'conversations' have a universal appeal because we all know a nugget like Karl. But the odd thing is, is that some of his bizarre theories actually have some credence.

I love this revamp of the podcasts. The animation is spot on. I like the flintstones style characters mixed with the almost Ren and Stimpy segways. The timing of Steve and Ricky's reaction to 'the little bald manc with a head like a orange' is superb.

I hope this HBO series carries on through all the best bits of the podcasts and Karl gets the international recognition for being the stupidest genius on the planet.

    Chimpanzee that?

Jon Death....that sums you up as far as your humour is concerned. If you don't know funny my friend (which you clearly don't), why bother writing a review. Please ignore this void.

Anyway.....the show is dangerously funny to the point where i was sure i was going to soil myself or cough up a lung!! Its filmed in a studio setting which is then animated over the top (excellently i might add) with sketches of the topics punctuating the set up. The discussions between the three consists of the thoughts and opinions on various topics by Ricky, Stephen and the irresistibly stupid Karl Pilkington. As a concept it doesn't seem that this would work anywhere nearly as well as it does and just underlines the exceptional and original talent of Ricky for coming up with something so new and fresh. This man is truly a history making talent and deserves the monocle of true genius in my book. You only have to look at the past work of this chubby funster to see that this man only operates in the entertaining and unique.

I cannot recommend this show more. Its funny funny funny. Anybody who thinks otherwise really needs to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror and go back to watching there 'Friends' box set and leave the real comedy to the people that appreciate it.

"The Ricky Gervais Show" is one of the funniest, most clever and brilliant show (Animated or not) that I had the chance to see. It is interesting to note how the original audio of this show turns even better as a cartoon, giving an extra appeal to the surrealistic stories that are told by the three comedians; Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington: The way in which the three interact is the main factor of humor, being by far the funniest segment the lecture of Karl Pilkington's diary. The animation is pretty good: The designs remind me a lot the classic cartoons made by Hannah Barbera, being simple, but very expressive at the same time. This is, by far, one of the best animated comedies of the recent years, and it feels like a breath of fresh air, after so many bad shows that try too hard to be like "The Simpsons" or more offensive than "South Park"

This show is absolutely hilarious, after watching the first episode out of boredom with nothing else to do, i was impelled to watch the other three so far in the season, and then download all of the pod-casts and the audio- book. Karl, very much reminds me of myself, and will definitely either remind you of yourself, or someone you know, he seems to actually have good points and opinions, but they way he words the, makes them absolutely dumb sounding but hilarious, and with Ricky and Steven mocking his every thought this show is definitely worth watching. It had me holding my sides and with an aching stomach from laughing so hard none stop through every episode. 10/10
  • I absolutely love this show, and any other one that has to do with Karl Pilkington such as: "An idiot abroad". I can't get enough of this guy. I must have watched all three seasons about 50 times by now and its still just as funny as when I first watched it. I thank my old roommate everyday for letting me use HBO GO on my xbox 360. I had first saw An idiot abroad on TV, and Karl Pilkington would crack me up so much, but when I found the Ricky Gervais show I was blown away. They could easily do 20 seasons of this show. In fact, Ricky Gervais, I am begging you to bring out more episodes of this show. Listening to podcasts isn't enough. The animation completes the whole thing. 10 out of 10 from me.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Back in 2002, a friend of mine nudged me in the direction of a small radio station called XFM. He strenuously urged that I listen to a Saturday show with comedy writers Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant and a strange, unknown entity. 'This will be your newest addiction' I was promised.

Ricky often mused that the radio show was probably the worst show on the air. With ridiculous competitions with crap prizes and idle rants about monkeys and freaks gave a general impression of a few friends simply messing around with a microphone. For anyone else, this would probably be difficult to enjoy and ultimately short lived. However, Ricky had a wild card. His name is Karl Pilkington.

The joy with Karl is his unique and misguided interpretation on life. This wide-eyed naivety that pushes boundaries through ignorance allows us to laugh guilt free at many of life's taboos. Often he strikes a deep and meaningful point before severely (and hilariously) misinterpreting it. For years Steve and Ricky poked the proverbial stick at their manchunian friend, each time striking a comedy goldmine.

And as the radio shows and subsequent podcasts peaked and flourished, team Gervais decided to open our peripherals to the perplexing mind of Pilkington. Cue - The Ricky Gervais Show.

As a huge fan of the original material, I was at first sceptical of the animated format. I thought it would restrict my own imagination as to Karls thoughts, almost spelling them out for me. Ultimately, I simply couldn't rationalise where the extra laughs would come from.

And then I saw episode one. As soon as I saw the cartoon Pilkington in Hannah Barbera style, I immediately laughed harder than I thought possible. His gaunt, glazed expression and perfectly round head were arguably better than the real thing. Added to that the constant digressions, brilliantly playing out the banter and conversations between the three of them. In between Steve's self deprecating anecdotes and Ricky's infectious laugh, Karl would set the scene time and time again; reflecting on his own adolescence, freaks, monkeys, the gays and many other areas of fascination, all supported by some of the funniest animation i've had the pleasure of seeing.

Now Ricky himself needs no introduction. Since the groundbreaking BBC comedy 'The Office', Ricky has time and time raised the bar in television programming. With the successful American adaptation, his (even better) comedy series 'Extras', fantastically risqué live stand-up (including the memorable Golden Globes performance) and regular movie work, he is now a household name; and rightly so. I even dare wax lyrical in declaring him the best comedian of our time. And with this newest instalment, along with the critically acclaimed travel documentary 'An Idiot Abroad', such a reputation can only be validated.

All in all, the animation has taken nothing away from the original format, and has added so, so much. If you have had the chance to listen to the older podcasts or even the XFM radio shows and yet not seen this, I would strenuously urge to to. If not, even better.

The Ricky Gervais Show (on HBO in the US and Channel 4 in the UK) will stimulate more laughter than you thought possible. As my friend once told me - 'This will be your newest addiction'.

    ********** (10/10)
  • (A suggestion: how about "Two Idiots Abroad" with Karl and Snooki? Or perhaps Karl becoming the 9th room-mate in the Jersey Shore house? Just a thought.)

Recently I'd finished watching both seasons of "An Idiot Abroad", and straight away thought, right, I'll never find anything as funny to follow this up with: it can only go downhill from here. I was having the first symptoms of "pilkingtonian withdrawal", a new pandemic whose existence I am sure other Pilko-fans can attest to. I figured I'd have no alternative left but to go back to re-viewing Karl's travelogue.

But then I luckily found out about the podcasts. Almost a decade old, and only now do I find out about them? In fact, I didn't even know who Karl was until a few months ago. Shame on me. What kind of a world do we live in which I learn about Kristen Stewart straight away, but don't find out about Karl until years later? Little did I know that TRGS would actually manage to surpass the high hilarity level in AIA. These animated podcasts contain some of the funniest material I have ever seen or heard. Every episode will make you laugh out loud, unless you're either autistic, asleep, totally soused, or a humourless g*t.

Picture the "Howard Stern Show" (in its heyday, not now), mixed in with "Dr.Katz" (with its animated flights of fancy), a touch of Steven Wright (the bizarre concepts and insane "logic"), and a speck of Peter Sellers of "Being There" – only funnier. TRGS might just be one of the best comedy series ever, or at the very least the best animated series of all times. Hugely original, totally unpredictable (except the "Monkey News", but that's the whole point), and refreshingly pointless.

Some people make the inane case for the original podcasts being better than their animated version because "one is left to one's own imagination". That is a ludicrous argument, the kind of idealistic babble that you might have heard from your apathetic English professor at school. Using that "logic", every good movie or TV show should be only heard, not seen, so that the viewer's experience doesn't get "impinged" by someone else's subjective visual imprint of the events. "Total b*ll*cks", as Gervais would probably say. Using this "logic", perhaps famous paintings should be described but never seen, so that the art-lovers "get to use their own imagination instead of someone else's". What poppycock. There's always someone to split hairs and nit-pick, even when an idea is totally flawless.

HBO's animation is imaginative, funny, colourful, spot-on brilliant, adding a whole new dimension of fun to the "bare bones" of the original broadcasts. The animators added a plethora of great new visual gags to the already existing top-notch material – so it mystifies me that anyone could possibly have a bone to pick with that. The drawing style is simple yet effective; the decision to go for a cheerful look as opposed to a grotesque (i.e. more "adult") style pays off vastly, because Karl's ravings are usually like that of a child anyway, a fact that would make any attempts to "darken" the tone of the show totally detrimental.

Is Karl a moron? I've already largely covered that in my "An Idiot Abroad" comment. Suffice it to say that Karl is weird rather than unintelligent, certainly an original thinker (in the broad sense of the term). Ricky calls him a "strange little creature", and that is a far more appropriate description of the round-headed fella than the somewhat crass "buffoon" label he gets in the opening credits. Pilkington is a very likable person, mellow and non-aggressive in his intentions (except when it comes to kicking a duck's butt), living in his own little world (which he luckily recounts in his ridiculous diary), and not every analysis he makes is daft. He jumps to conclusions, he tends to believe whatever suits him (rather than what makes sense), his general knowledge is poor (but so is that of much of the masses), and his wishful thinking gets the better of him in most cases (which makes him no different than most people, actually).

That particular affliction - wishful thinking – is something Ricky Gervais exhibits too. Ricky refers to himself as a "liberal"; left-wingers base their philosophies on wishful thinking, fearing to face a science-based politically-incorrect ugly reality that doesn't often go hand-in-hand with their idealistic notions of an eventual "perfect world" that they so desperately want to believe in.

In an ideal world, unguided by commercial restraints, this show would be called "The Karl Pilkington Show"; in fact, Gervais had said something to this effect. However, it is foolish to minimize the efforts of Gervais/Merchant, who not only bring out the best in Karl but who themselves offer a great number of clever observations and hilarious comments. After all, Gervais isn't just some random run-of-the-mill comedian who lucked out, i.e. "struck gold", by bumping into Pilkington one rainy English day in the monkey section of the Manchester Zoo; Ricky is currently the best stand-up comedian there is. Watch "Fame", "Animals", or "Out of England", and you can't go wrong.

The stand-out episode is s02e01, in which Karl describes the outline of his movie with Rebecca de Mornay. TRGS has to be seen to be believed. Just as I use "Friends" (the worst sitcom of all time) as a litmus test to weed out those with low(er) intelligence and a primitive/shoddy taste in comedy, likewise will I do from now on with TRGS: anyone who finds this program unfunny is either braindead or deeply depressed and on the verge of committing suicide. In fact, if you're depressed, you cannot possible want to jump off a bridge once you've seen an episode. You'll want to cancel your suicide – or at the very least postpone it until you'd seen all the (so far) 26 episodes.
  • I really liked the first season and the first half of the second season. Beyond this point Ricky and Stephen are unable to let Karl finish a single sentence. This goes on and on, unlike what i expected. The lack of manners in a conversation shown by these two people made me disliking the show. I had a good time watching the first season but Ricky and Stephen love to hear themselves talk, what really ruined the whole series for me.
  • Warning: Spoilers
I saw the advert for this animated pod-cast based show and thought it looked and would be relatively amusing, it turned out to be much funnier than I expected. Starring The Office and Extras star, writer and director Ricky Gervais; his co-writer and co-director Stephen Merchant; and their XFM radio producer friend Karl Pilkington. They have been getting together for a few years in a radio studio to have pointless conversations about particular subjects sent in by fans of the show and from hearing the news. These chats, or pod-casts, were recorded live, but the big hook of the show is that the three stars have been animated, almost in the style of Hanna Barbera, i.e. The Flintstones, with their conversations brought to life. Whatever subject they talk about, it is most often questions posed to Karl, and the hilarious comedy mostly comes from his long-winded and not always intelligent answers. Ricky and Stephen talk to each other a little too, but the best jokes come from them running off on Karl's daft comments about the subjects posed, and this is where the animation comes in handy. The show's only traditions on the programme is Monkey News, where a news article is explained (mostly by Karl), and it all comes down to the involvement of a monkey, and Ricky and Stephen also read through Karl's personal diary and spin off his unusual and weird written entries. Gervais has a fantastically infectious laugh, Merchant is a good back-up for Gervais's comedic comments towards Pilkington, and Pilkington is a lovable moron, all combined makes a brilliant comedy show, possibly one of the funniest ever to be on television that I have seen. Ricky Gervais was number 49 on The Comedians' Comedian, he was number 30 on TV's 50 Greatest Stars, and he was number 18 on Britain's Favourite Comedian. Outstanding!

    Warning: Spoilers
I always have been a big fan of Ricky Gervais, and a big fan of animated shows, so this show was like a dream come true for me.

Having listened to all of the pod-casts and audio books I wasn't sure how I will react to this animated show. To be honest I expected to watch the first one and then think "oh well, I've heard it all before", but it wasn't like that all: In fact, despite having heard it all before (Several times) I still found myself laughing. The animations are brilliant and add a whole new level of comedy to the audio. I will never get bored of this show. It is simply one of the funniest things ever made.
  • Tonny-Lindgren9 June 2011
Comedy at it's finest. I read the other reviews and found two which had a directly downward score. Then I looked at who loved it. I could say its four times more that has eight stars and if you looked a bit more into the other movies made with Ricky, Stephen and Karl you would know they just don't fake it.

Now to the actual review. This show is animated comedy at it's best and I recommend it to anyone who don't think they fake it (like some reviewers). The animations fit perfectly to the show and could not have been better! I really hope there will be a third season (and also a fourth one) as the quality still remains on top. Haters be gone.. there's a new episode of "Heroes of the Humorless"!
  • What are the funniest memories in your life? Are they bizarre coincidences that happened to you? Maybe it was witnessing something unfortunate happen to someone else? Or were they nothing more than the conversations you've had with your friends? For me, the biggest laughs I've ever had in my life have come from simply talking to people I enjoy being with. The Ricky Gervais Show captures these moments by being a show entirely about the conversations held by 3 friends: Ricky, Steve, and Karl.

Despite the show's title, Karl is by far the main focus throughout the series. Ricky and Steve ask him questions that have divided humanity for centuries because of the complex ideas deeply rooted in the issues at hand. But Karl is able to answer them with earnest, original, and outright hilarious takes on these questions that you just couldn't make up. Nowadays, podcasts leave audiences with an abundance of shows about people just chatting to choose from, but only The Ricky Gervais Show has Karl Pilkington. This show is worth it for him alone, but it gets better.

Ricky and Steve react to Karl's ideas in ways that are almost just as hilarious. Ricky's contagiously explosive laughter is the best form of a "laugh track" in any show, if you could consider it a laugh track at all. Steve also supplements Karl's hilarious ideas with some sharp, witty quips of his own. This is all topped off with animation that does a great job at calling back to previous conversations that the 3 had, often combining the representation of the current discussions with things like characters in the background who are doing stuff that was happening in a previous scene or episode.

Other than those callback jokes in the background, this show has no continuity, so you can watch any episode at any point. If you want to get someone else into the show, I recommend "The Diary" or "The Future." Arite?

    Warning: Spoilers
This was one of the funniest animated shows that I've ever seen. It was originally a radio show in the 2001, and it turned into animation in the 2010. The animation, (which is pretty well made) makes the audio even funnier, describing the strangest and most ridiculous situations that the viewer could imagine.

The interaction between Ricky Gervais, Karl Pilkington and Stephen Merchant is extremely funny, I consider this to be one of the funniest shows ever made, along with "Arrested Development", "Scrubs" and "Space Ghost: Coast to Coast". And of course it is much better than horrible shows as "Family Guy" and "American Dad"

I would give this show eleven stars if I could.
  • This show is beyond hilarious. Karl pilkinton is by far the funniest and stupidest person on this planet, and I love it. This show is a perfect pass time and it really serves as a good escape whilst your doing other tasks. I love this show and will never be bored of it. I must have watched it more that 15 times now, and I'm still not bored and I don't think I ever will be. Karl is a comedic genius and he doesn't even know it! This show will go down in history! I love it so much!
  • I've seen a few negative reviews for The Ricky Gervais Show and I find it very sad that these people have such a puckered anus about it that they have to slag off a brilliant show and brilliant cast. The rating for the show is real, 8.5 or something like that; and, it's for a reason. I'm not going to go on tangents of why the show is amazing and all; but, really people, stop downing things that you might not grasp fully because you have not lived your lives and have no idea what is funny to most people. I have things I have not experienced yet and I don't go whining up and down on a review because some half-brain told me it was bad.

Come up with your own conclusion. FFS
  • I read the title "Ricky Gervais Show" in my local TV listings and imagined that it might be more than bog-simple animation accomapanying pathetic ideas at humour. No such luck! I can clearly see why some in Britain wish all Essex-kind a grisly death for wasting British time, and this "show" is as clear a point as any in that determination. I should think a blow-by-blow dialogue as Ricky wipes his arse would be more amusing than the show under discussion, which lacks sophistication, cleverness, or any merit whatsoever. It is just like a bunch of losers in the pub amusing themselves in the corner in their dreams. Muppets!
  • This is quite literally one of the funniest shows I have seen in my life. I have read all of the reviews and I have come to a conclusion, anyone who believes that "Rocky" Gervais isn't funny, but instead would sit down and indulge in a little "Modern Family" is best left silent.

The conversations are inane, but that is what makes them hysterical. More over the friendship between the three of these guys is obvious, but this is what makes it fun. Honestly, if you prefer your comedy in the vain of the mass produced kind, by all means this won't be for you, but then it probably wasn't meant to be, was it?

    Awesomeness 10/10.
  • If you're a fan of friends , how I met your mother , Big Bang theory and the like , this may not be for you , if , however , you like your comedy a bit more cerebral and can find humour in the ways of life , especially if you grew up In England in the 70s and 80s you will love this , three friends having a chat , but it's way more than that , these guys have accompanied me almost daily for the last ten years , their ramblings about all sorts of things are truly captivating, if you have a Sense of humour you can't fail to laugh as karl tries to get to grips with the world , sayings , quotes and the whole spectrum of life , again if you like brainless TV sitcoms based around someone popping their head round a door and muttering a completely unfunny line followed by hilarious laughter , look elsewhere you round headed buffoons
  • Karl, Ricky and Stephen are 3 of the funniest men alive. No jokes are told, no studio laughter to force you into thinking something is funny. Just the anecdotes and hilarious observations of the little round headed buffoon that is Karl Pilkington.

Seen every episode multiple times over and it NEVER gets old.
  • The mind of Karl is a glorious thing. I had watched this years ago when it first came out and have just finished rewatching it once again. It's an absolute blast listening to the conversations between these friends. The animations are a fun addition to the podcasts as well. Honestly some of the most enjoyable entertainment I've consumed. I'd recommend this to anyone that has a sense of humour. I'd also like to recommend, for anyone that enjoys the anecdotes of Mr. Pilkington, An idiot abroad. Check it out.
