It took till season 9 of “The Masked Singer” but we’ve finally got a costume that features five performers: the California Roll. They took to the stage on March 1 to deliver a soaring cover of the hit “Paparazzi” by Lady Gaga. After Polar Bear lost the audience vote and was revealed to be rapper Grandmaster Flash, California Roll was pitted in a Battle Royale with Medusa.
Each put their own spin on the classic tune “Uptown Girl” by Billie Joel. Medusa delivered a traditional take on the tune while California Roll turned it into a haunting ballad. After Medusa won the vote, we thought this was the last we’d see of California Roll but Nicole Scherzinger sounded the Ding Dong bell and saved them.
We’ve been rewatching both of these performances and have all your “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the answer to the question, “Who is California...

Did NBC just use The Voice Top 10 results night to aggressively cross-promote upcoming premieres of Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love and Hollywood Game Night?
Yeah, sure, but who cares? We got not one but two performances from living legend Dolly Parton, a mildly amusing bit of filler in which Jane Lynch got Blake Shelton and Miley Cyrus to sing into a fun-house microphone and an appearance by Pentatonix that makes me wonder if the Peacock Net might be considering a relaunch/reboot/revival of The Sing-Off. (I mean, they brought back Heroes for a minute, so anything’s possible.

At the start of NBC's "The Sing-Off," Nick Lachey called it "a very special edition" of the a capella singing competition, which had the subtitle "Holiday Special." Those were both very nice ways of saying that NBC cut the show: from the 11 hours, seven episodes, and 10 groups last year to two hours, one episode, and six groups this year. Also, the prize was cut in half to $50,000, and the show lost last year's fun face-off performances between the bottom two teams. Along with all that, it lost a lot of what made it such a terrific series. Most significantly, judge Ben Folds was gone, replaced by Patrick Stump because Ben Folds was on tour and apparently NBC couldn't figure out how to reschedule the show to film with its true star. Stump couldn't figure out how to judge, either. While returning judges Jewel and Shawn Stockman gave specific feedback, identifying individuals' strengths and sometimes weaknesses,...

The first time I heard that The Sing-Off was going to be limited to a one-night special this year, I went through some pretty serious turmoil. All five stages of grief passed through in a matter of minutes: Denial that the entirety of season 5 could potentially only include one Nick Lachey jewel tone button-down; Anger that NBC was doing this to us; Bargaining that we might somehow lure Ben Folds back in a judge's chair with a Warby Parker gift basket of sorts; Depression that Home Free would be unceremoniously replaced as the reigning champs in just two short hours; and finally,...

Let me begin this recap with a bold prediction: Season 7 of The Voice, despite being the weakest in the history of NBC’s singing competition, will be the first to launch a chart-topping, stadium-filling superstar.

It seems there’s nothing YouTube a cappella group Pentatonix can’t accomplish. The Arlington, Texas-based singers with over 7 million subscribers saw their album That’s Christmas to Me reach the #1 spot on iTunes, even passing up Taylor Swift’s 1989. Pentatonix, consisting of members Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Avi Kaplan, Kirstie Maldonado, and Kevin Olusola, released That’s Christmas to Me on October 21, 2014 through RCA Records. The album sold almost 100,000 copies in the U.S. within its first week, and managed to snag the #1 spot on Billboard’s U.S. Digital Albums chart and the Top Holiday Albums chart (where it sat for over six weeks). For the life of them, Pentatonix just can't find their way into a Taylor Swift song. The quintet has racked up millions of YouTube views, covering some of the most popular hit songs, chopping and screwing others, and doing their own spin on Christmas. But in my interview with Mitch Grassi and Avi Kaplan of Pentatonix, for this week's HitFix Mix, it's the "Shake It Off" singer that, for some reason, are hard to find their way into. There's also "a lot of [covers] that wouldn't make sense to do," said Kaplan. "Earth Angel," "For the Longest Time" and other "old-school a cappella" hits haven't made their way into the troupe's rep either. But what has are holiday classics, and with the Christmas season right around the corner, Grassi, Kaplan, Scott Hoying, Kirstie Maldonado and Kevin Olusola will be on the road all this fall into December, promoting "That's Christmas to Me,...

Mariah Carey, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Shakira, Demi Lovato, Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, Ben Folds, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Usher, Keith Urban: they've all made hit records, but they've also all served as judges on music competition reality TV shows. "American Idol," "The X Factor," "The Sing-Off" and "The Voice" have (or had) the habit of taking on chart-topping artists for their panels. While Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson helped lead the earliest charge in American reality TV, these current lineups are employing artists who are still making music -- or at least trying -- in a big way today. But no judge is created equal. Some have excelled at being judges on their respective shows, while others have struggled. And the same goes for their music: taking on a reality television show is a gamble when trying to re-invigorate a musical career. So, pay attention, new "Voice" judges...
