Following on from a July where they added a large number of horror titles to their catalogue, Hulu have now made available even more great outings from the genre. As with all the major streaming players, keeping subscribers happy with new content during this Covid-19 year has been crucial, especially given the new competitors that have sprung up in recent months, further splintering film rights. Hulu are usually pretty reliable in terms of diversity, though, and have added some particularly strong horror titles for August.
Among the highlights for new movies is the original 1988 Child’s Play, which introduced the murderous Chucky to the world in a film that arguably remains the high-point of the franchise. A reasonably realistic setting, a convincing child performance and some excellent effects work make Child’s Play a classic of the period and more than worth a rewatch. We’re only just over halfway through July, but let’s hop ahead a couple of weeks into the future and take a look at what’s coming to Hulu in August. Next month will see the streaming service add an enormous list of movies and TV shows, with numerous classics amongst them, and everyone from horror to action to romance fans and even family audiences should be pleased with what’s coming.
The first day of the month, for example, brings the opening installments in two major horror franchises that kicked off in the late 80s – 1987’s Hellraiser and 1988’s Child’s Play. Sticking with the 80s, August 1st likewise sees 1986’s Top Gun added to the library, too. Not to mention 1981’s My Bloody Valentine.
For you romance lovers out there, meanwhile, Australia and Four Weddings and A Funeral drop the same day, and family audiences can enjoy Cats & Dogs,...

If you were concerned about there being a content drought in August due to the coronavirus pandemic shutting down Hollywood, you were…absolutely right in those concerns.
For its new releases in August 2020, Hulu is following Apple, Disney, and even Peacock’s lead in taking things nice and slowly. The vast majority of the notable offerings here are of the library variety. Hulu adds classic movies like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Rain Man, and Top Gun on August 1. Those go along with the very much still-holds-up Casino Royale on August 31.
Hulu also has room for some interesting recent indie movies like Ordinary Love (Aug. 3) and Peanut Butter Falcon (Aug. 6). But when it comes to Hulu original content there’s not much going on. The unheralded Find Me in Paris debuts its third season on August 21. That is followed by original comedy The Binge on August 28. And that’s about it!

Chicago – One of the perkier new TV shows of the fall season on The CW network is the medical drama, “Emily Owens, M.D.,” about a first year medical student navigating the rigors of a big city hospital. One of the more memorable characters is Dr. Gina Bandari, portrayed by Necar Zadegan, a teaching surgeon that Emily (Marnie Gummer) will encounter along her journey.
Zadegan is a familiar television face, creating the distinct character of Dalia Hassan in Season 8 – the last season – for the popular drama “24.” After graduating with a degree in literature from the University of California, Zadegan amassed a number of TV appearances up until her role as Dalia. In film, she appeared in the notable independent entitled “Elena Undone” (2010), and will be in the upcoming “Meth Head.”

On the second episode of the series, which I found myself way more immersed in than the pilot, but this was more due to engaging hospital patient storylines than screentime with Kelly McCreary’s face, of which there wasn’t enough. So hooray on one hand, boo on the other.
We start this week with Emily once again talking to herself and trying to reassure her brain that she will not collapse into an awkward mess when she sees Will, who if you remember, she poured her romantical guts out to last week in a very dramatic type of way. And to which Will replied, “Eh, nah.” I feel for Emily on this one — having to see a person on a daily basis after something like this is one of the worst things on Earth, after hangnails and wet socks and Bud Light and stuff.

The more astute of readers will probably have guessed that I am not a lesbian, so perhaps I am not the target audience for Nicole Conn's Elena Undone (2010). However, what you will have also guessed is that I am an avid film lover, so I'd like to think that I know what makes a good film and what makes a bad film...and Elena Undone is a bad film.
Conn's film tells the tale of Elena (Necar Zadegan), the wife of the local pastor and photographer who strikes up a friendship with local writer and lesbian Peyton (Traci Dinwiddie). Their friendship grows and grows until they both admit their feelings for each other and begin an affair.
So the plot, while cliched, is at least fairly decent. It ticks all of the right boxes and, aside from the final 10 minutes, follows a very linear path that is signposted along the way.

Julianne Moore. Natalie Portman. Annette Bening. A few years ago, no one would have dreamed that such big, bankable names would be involved in pushing lesbian-inclusive cinema to the major studio mainstream, perhaps even to the promised land of the Oscars. But here we are at the end of 2010, and the future has never looked brighter.
With one truly breakout film, The Kids Are All Right, and high-profile projects including The Runaways, Black Swan, and the Millennium Trilogy, it seems that that queer female lead characters have finally made it into the cinematic forefront. Perhaps it's only a toehold, but it's a welcome trend, considering big-screen lesbians have most typically been portrayed as serial killers (Monster, Basic Instinct) or minor characters.
The lesbian movies are all right
For years, the lesbian movie-watching community has been waiting for "Dykeback Mountain" — that is, our own mainstream breakout in the vein of 2005's cowboy romance Brokeback Mountain.

It was a simple question: “Why aren’t there more lesbian films out there?” And “Elena Undone” came into being as the result of my falling in love after a fair four decades on the planet — really, truly, madly in love with my partner, Marina Rice Bader, (also executive producer), who asked it.
“Well,” I responded, with a wry sense of compassion (and, yes, patronizing cynicism) — after all, she had been straight all her life, had no insight into the labyrinthian dysfunctionality of the lesbian nation nor the especially harsh economic feasibility, politics and vicious scarcity issues as they applied to “lesbian cinema.” The harsh truth about the “new distribution paradigm for this niche category” is that to make any money at all you can shoot these “niche” films only at budgets of 250,000 or less, and when you’re playing in that price range (ours was “or less”), you’re...

Elena Undone opens with a hazy, slow motion shot of two women walking towards each other. A voiceover dreamily states “In love, one and one are ... one. Seldom do we get to experience the art in love.” It goes on to reference Emily Bronte and the scene reveals that we’ve actually been listening to a church sermon (a not-so-subtle transition to a stained glass window is our first hint).
From here, we meet Elena (Necar Zadegan), a beautiful, soft-spoken woman. She’s married to the preacher (Barry, played by Gary Weeks), and they’re trying for another child, a subject that Mr. Preacher seems much more keen on than Elena. She’s accosted by a cartoonish gaggle of churchgoers for not attending an anti-gay marriage protest, and she seeks comfort in the arms of Tyler (Sam Harris), a sort of love guru who makes films about “soulemetry” and stages...

Actresses Necar Zadegan and Tracie Dinwiddie have puckered up big time for their roles in the new movie Elena Undone -- and their soon to be famous lip-lock has now landed them in the record books as owners of the longest kiss in cinema history.
The film, which deals with a well-known lesbian writer falling in love with a pastor's wife was conceived by filmmaker Nicole Conn after her partner wondered why there weren't more lesbian films being made. The idea of the record-breaking kiss, however, didn't come until later.
Conn recounts the story of the kiss' conception by explaining that it came to her after a long day of script revisions. The writer-director felt she was overthinking things and decided to revisit her emotions instead. The upcoming indie romance drama "Elena Undone", which follows a well-known lesbian writer falling in love with a pastor's wife, has broken a record for the longest screen kiss in history reports After Ellen.
The 3 minute 24 second lip-lock between actresses Necar Zadegan and Tracie Dinwiddie beats the previous record holder, Jane Wyman and Regis Toomey's kiss in 1941's "You’re in the Army Now", by eighteen seconds. 2005's "Kids in America" featured a six-minute kiss, however it took place during the end credits and isn't considered 'organic to the film' (ie. part of the story).
Filmmaker Nicole Conn (Claire of the Moon, Little Man) wanted to "capture the power and magic behind a monumental first kiss". The film itself will screen at Frameline in San Francisco on June 25th and at Outfest in Los Angeles on July 16th.

Filmmaker Nicole Conn (Claire of the Moon, Little Man) is doing her part to put lesbians in the record books, one extra-long kiss at a time.
Her new project, Elena Undone, follows a well-known lesbian writer who falls for the wife of a pastor. It was conceived by Conn and her partner, Marina Rice Bader, on a weekend getaway when Bader asked, "Why aren't there more lesbian movies out there?" The two decided to "give it a go," and Elena Undone was born.
In her new film, Conn wanted to capture the power and magic behind a monumental first kiss, and ended up shooting a 3:24 long kissing scene that breaks the record for longest kiss in cinema history, originally set back in 1941 by — naturally — a heterosexual couple.
Conn, the writer and director recently told us about the inspiration behind the history-making kiss she filmed and gave us a first look at the scene.
