The Tom Hardy-starring threequel, which is set to hit theaters on Nov. 8, also features Juno Temple and Chiwetel Ejiofor in undisclosed roles. Similarly, character details for Backo are being kept under wraps.
Kelly Marcel helms the antihero movie in her feature directorial debut, and wrote the screenplay from a story she developed with Hardy. The duo, who also developed the first two “Venom” installments, return to produce the film alongside Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal and Hutch Parker.
Reps for Sony and Backo did not immediately respond to request for comment on her casting.

“There is a great deal of truth in that album,” Usher told the publication. He noted, however, that it wasn’t just his truth, explaining that he reached out to multiple male friends in the industry at the time, and they had “talk sessions” and came up with the lyrics.
“We would sit around, and I would say, ‘Yo, check your egos at the door, and let’s just really be honest,'” he recalled. “‘Everybody has to speak their truth.'”

Usher knows that social media has been buzzing with fantasy playlists about his halftime show performance, while others try to guess which special guests he’ll bring onstage.
He didn’t offer specific details at a press conference in Las Vegas on Thursday, but the singer said he would incorporate elements of his uber-successful Sin City residency, which includes him dancing and singing while skating.
“I was very mindful of my past, celebrating my present, which is here in Las Vegas, and thinking about where we are headed in the future,” he told Apple Music’s Nadeska Alexis onstage. “What songs do people know me for? What songs have been a celebration of [my career]? That was the idea.”
Usher has collaborated with acts like Beyoncé, Lil Wayne, Alicia Keys, Ludacris, Justin Bieber, Jungkook of BTS, J Balvin, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Lil Jon and Jay-Z, who is executive producing the halftime show for a fifth time.

Exclusive: There’s been much celebratory talk here at the Tokyo Film Festival about a new dawn of internationally-minded Japanese artists led by directors such as Hirokazu Kore-eda, Makoto Shinkai, and Ryusuke Hamaguchi.
One of the key creative voices often mentioned amongst this new Japanese set is Genki Kawamura, known internationally by audiences as the writer of If Cats Disappeared from the World, one of Japanese literature’s most successful contemporary novels, and the filmmaker who brought that book and titles such as Suzume, Weathering with You, and, most recently, Kore-eda’s Cannes prize-winning Monster to the big screen.
Born in Yokohama in 1979, Kawamura began his career at entertainment juggernaut Toho, where he was identified early as a promising talent. He cut his teeth on pics like Tetsuya Nakashima’s 2010 feature Confessions, which was shortlisted for the Best International Feature Oscar, and Mamoru Hosoda’s The Boy and the Beast.

Grammy-winning superstar Usher is set to headline the 2024 Apple Music Super Bowl Lviii halftime show.
The NFL, Roc Nation and Apple Music made the announcement on Sunday. The big game will take place on Feb. 11, 2024, at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada, just outside of Las Vegas. It will air live on CBS.
“It’s an honor of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list. I can’t wait to bring the world a show unlike anything else they’ve seen from me before,” Usher said in a statement. “Thank you to the fans and everyone who made this opportunity happen. If you plan to attend Usher's "My Way" Las Vegas residency, you'll want to arrive early because you don't want to miss the preshow dance party courtesy of his unmatched fans. As I walked into the Park MGM arena for the show I was attending in late June, my ears were greeted with classic R&b and hip-hop songs like Tevin Campbell's "Can We Talk" and Miguel's "Adorn You" as a DJ encouraged us to stand, dance, and sing along with the rest of the audience. Usher's dancers even came out and interacted with the audience, inviting some lucky attendees to dance with them on stage. The vibes felt more like a house party with all of my best friends than a concert surrounded by strangers. So much so that I didn't even realize the show was starting.

Investigating the nature of altruism, director Penny Lane turns the camera on herself in Confessions of a Good Samaritan, showing her process as an organ donor navigating the uncomfortable space of “gifting” a part of your body to a stranger. Single, in her early 40s, and financially secure after a decade of building her career, she decides its time to give back to the universe as a way of saying thank you for life ultimately working out.
For Lane, this is a rare work to proceed in a fairly straightforward manner. Extensive self-interviews frame her donation, which was made before Covid disrupted every industry, and Confessions unpacks the history of donations, including a 1984 decree that outlawed the exchange of money or anything of value for a body part. Though most donations are made to family members in need, online exchanges––similar to a dating website––are an option for those...

Sza continues to show remarkable staying power atop the Billboard 200 albums chart. Her sophomore album “Sos” is number-one for the sixth week in a row, continuing a milestone run for women and for R&b. Read more about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.
“Sos” dominated the list for the tracking week that ended January 19. It achieved 119,000 equivalent album units based on its combined record sales, individual track sales, and online streaming performance. That’s down just four-percent from week to week thanks to the album’s stellar streaming numbers, which account for almost all of the album’s units. No R&b album has spent six weeks on top since Usher‘s “Confessions” 19 years ago. And the only other women in the last 10 years to spend six weeks at number-one are Adele and Taylor Swift.

The concept of “bullying the bully” has been one that has been repeatedly explored in Japanese cinema with films like “Confessions” and “Liverleaf” being the first that come to mind. Mayu Nakamura, however, takes it to a whole new level, as this time, we have a story of ‘scamming the scammer’, which goes much further than one could have imagined.

Among the many exciting projects comes the story “Finding Batman,” which is written by Kevin Conroy with art by J. Bone and lettering by Aditya Bidikar. Over the course of the last couple of years, we have seen many movies and read many novels, dealing with the subject of bullying, with Tetsuya Nakashima’s “Confessions” and Lee Su-jin’s “Han Gong-ju” being two of the perhaps most prominent examples. Given the focus on the social phenomenon, its victims and the repercussions for both sides, the ability to transform yourself into someone who can fight back, physically as well as emotionally, has become a pop-cultural trope. In their 2016 webtoon “Shark” writer Woon and illustrator Kim Woo-seob took this narrative as the foundation of a story about a character going through a transformation, searching for strength and eventually finding something completely different within himself.

Some might argue that the sophomore outing of “Succession” was stronger than its most recent third season, which aired last fall, but that likely means very little when the HBO series is one of the best shows on TV and in a good position to pull off an impressive sweep this year.
The series, which follows the machinations of the complicated Roy family, who own and operate a major conglomerate known as Waystar Royco, has already taken home the Screen Actors Guild Award for drama ensemble. It quickly followed that up with the Directors Guild of America Award for dramatic series, which went to Mark Mylod for helming the game-changing Season 3 finale, “All the Bells Say.” Admittedly, the latter triumph isn’t much of a surprise since the series swept the nominations, filling out all five slots in a historic first for the DGA. But if “Succession” is also victorious...

It is one of the biggest truths of international cinema, that the level (of extremity if you prefer) the highschool drama has reached in the Japanese movie industry, in actually unparalleled, with films that range from “Confessions” to “Flowers of Evil”, from “Crows Zero” to “Liverleaf” and from “Assassination Classroom” to “Lesson of the Evil, including everything between. Hideo Jojo, who has mainly worked in adult films, in an adaptation of the manga series “Joshikosei ni Korosaretai” by Usamaru Furuya, presents another testament to the fact.

Grammys flashback: Ray Charles’s sweep in 2005 was a parting gift to one of the greatest of all time
Ray Charles’s legacy is unquestionable. “The Genius,” as he was often called, was one of the most respected artists of the past century, proving his skilled musicianship and talent as well as his euphoric personality, all despite being blind. That’s in part why his death in 2004 — soon after completing what would be his final record, “Genius Loves Company” — struck a chord for the industry and audiences alike. But 2004 turned out to be a big year for Charles’s legacy, even after his passing. His biopic, “Ray,” came out, garnering praise and an Academy Award for Best Actor for Jamie Foxx, and his final album was released posthumously and would result in a full Grammy sweep in early 2005, including Album of the Year.

Twenty years after making the Oscar-nominated box office hit “The Crime of Padre Amaro” in 2002, Mexican director Carlos Carrera and producer Daniel Birman Ripstein are teaming up once more for psychological thriller “Confessions.”
“We’re now in post with a documentary about child actors in Mexico, ‘I Want to be Famous,’ but this will be the first drama we’ll have made together since ‘Padre Amaro,’” said Birman whose Alameda Films — originally founded with his late grandfather Alfredo Ripstein — has produced a number of literature-inspired films, including such classics as “Midaq Alley,” which launched Salma Hayek’s career, and also distributes indie films in Mexico.
“We’d been looking at several fiction projects to do together when this script reached us. Like Vicente Leñero’s screenplay for ‘Padre Amaro,’ it was ready to shoot,” he added.
Renowned Mexican screenwriter and novelist Alberto Chimal has adapted the original script by Spain...

Festival Ambassador for this year’s Tokyo International Film Festival, Hashimoto Ai is an inspired choice for the role and not only because she is an A-list actor who has starred in hit TV series (“Amachan”) and worked with internationally acclaimed directors like Nakashima Tetsuya (“Confessions”) and Yoshida Daihachi (“The Kirishima Thing”).
She is also a certified film nerd, who has proclaimed her love of everything from 1970s “pink” (softcore adult) classics to low-budget indie films made by her contemporaries, which she sees in theaters, not on her smartphone.
Now 25, she has a career going back to 2009, when she made her screen debut as basketball-loving deaf girl in Mori Ho’s “Give and Go.” Speaking to Variety prior to the line-up press conference for TIFF,
Hashimoto said that from then to now she has seen windows of opportunity opening up in the Japanese film world. “Anyone can make a film now,...
