Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha has a new, contemporary adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in the works.
With films including Bhaji On The Beach, Bend It Like Beckham and Blinded By The Light, Gurinder Chadha has long since established herself as a filmmaker capable of tackling contemporary subjects with a lightness of touch and broad appeal.
It’s a style that’s set to continue with her film for Disney – more on that in a sec – and another project we hadn’t previously learned about: a modern adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
As reported by Variety, the film came to light when Chadha was in the UK’s House of Commons and talking about the state of the British film industry. There, she revealed that her Christmas Carol would have a British Indian protagonist. Her “Scrooge is an Indian Tory who hates refugees,” she said.

Nintendo saw the millions upon millions that "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" brought in and decided to ... do something completely different and bet on big risks and in Avi Arad. The game studio and Sony Pictures Entertainment announced last month that Wes Ball will direct a live-action feature film adaptation of "The Legend of Zelda" video game series. That's right. A live-action film, not an animated one.

Wes Ball is a surprising choice, to be sure, but a welcome one. As our own Jacob Hall wrote, the upcoming adaptation "isn't guaranteed to be a great movie, but it's taken a big and important first step by hiring a young, promising, exciting filmmaker with a giant well of talent and a lot to prove. The quest begins."

Oscar winner Ariana DeBose voices an all-singing heroine in an overstuffed yet underpowered attempt to replicate the success of Frozen
A decade ago, at a time when both Disney and Pixar’s animation output was not exactly unsuccessful but entirely unmemorable, Frozen became a sticky $1.2bn game-changer, a box office hit that turned into an all-consuming phenomenon. It won Oscars, produced earworms that burrowed (a little too) deep, spawned a $1.45bn sequel, led to a hit Broadway musical and showed Disney how to dust off the contemporarily critiqued princess narrative rather than throw it away completely.
Opening in the same Thanksgiving slot 10 years later, with a script co-written by Frozen’s Jennifer Lee, Wish is a bullishly positioned successor, another self-aware, formula-tweaking Disney Princess narrative with as many radio-friendly power ballads as there are Christmas-timed merchandising opportunities. But Wish feels less like Disney’s new Frozen and more like an off-brand rip-off,...

Since stepping down from royal duties, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have returned to the U.K. a handful of times. Some of the royal events they attended included Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, as well as the late monarch‘s funeral, and Harry made a solo trip to attend King Charles’ coronation in May. The duke traveled to England again in September for the 2023 WellChild Awards before he and his wife head to Germany where the Invictus Games are being held.
However, a few royal experts say the duke and duchess’s visits will remain infrequent and the pair won’t ever consider returning on a permanent basis because of what Meghan would be expected to do when the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) becomes queen.

Did you ever meet someone who at first seems objectionable, but with time finds a place in your heart? That’s both the plot and the viewing experience for Red, White & Royal Blue, an Amazon production based on the well-loved novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston. In it, the son of the American president and an English prince begin as rivals but quickly fall in love and have to keep their relationship a secret for the sake of their respective countries.
Packed with national cliches, intermittently stunted dialogue, and an early cake-based bit of slapstick, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is going to be one excruciating ride. But somehow, Red, White & Royal Blue manages to be actually sort of sweet. This is a modern-set, yet ‘90s-styled and Bridgerton-lite, bit of wish fulfillment where beautiful rich people argue about privilege and entitlement and have tasteful and romantic sex.

Ray Price, a respected producer of indie filmmaking, died July 16 from heart failure after a long battle with cancer. The news was confirmed by his long-term partner Meg Madison. He was 75 years old.
Price launched his film career in 1972, managing the Berkeley storefront theater the Rialto, and went on to build with Allen Michaan Renaissance Theaters, an independent art film chain that became one of the largest (33 at its peak) in the Bay Area and was later sold to the Landmark Theatre circuit.
A tough negotiator and exacting exhibitor, under Price’s stewardship, Renaissance Theaters were renowned for redesigning marketing materials, from posters to press books — designs that fledgling distributors often adopted when the films hadn’t found success in other markets.
At a time when most top arthouse distributors focused on established auteurs from Europe and Asia, Renaissance Theaters exploded those norms by programming new American directors like Martin Scorsese and John Cassavetes.

Is there a way forward for AFC Richmond?
That was the big question we were reminded of throughout Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 1 as the ailing football team remained criminally undermined.
Did anyone else feel robbed of the immediate aftermath of Nate's betrayal?
Time jumps are great, but there should have been more when you have 12 episodes and what can only be described as an unlimited run time.
Nate's character arc throughout the first two seasons culminated in this betrayal, so it would have been fantastic seeing the players' reactions in real-time.
Then again, maybe leaving it up to the imagination was better because I must imagine that whatever was said must have been for a mature audience.
It's hard to believe that Nate is now the coach of West Ham, but when you look at who's calling the shots behind closed doors at the team, it makes sense.
Ted: Sorry about that.

Hello readers! It's Venice time again. As with previous festivals, I'll be reviewing the movies with some festival experience details on the side. I screened three and a half movies (we'll get to the half at the end) in the first Day of the Mostra. Both the official opening night film White Noise and Princess in the Orizzonti section were a bit disappointing though both are far from failures. A woman prays in the woods. A bright bubblegum pink wig frames her closed eyes as she wishes for good clients, rustling leaves turned choir, sprawling branches turned pew. The forest is her office — or at least half of it. The other half is the bustling road a few meters away, where she parades to and fro with contagious confidence, her phone in one hand as the other flags down possible customers.

Roberto De Paolis’ second film has such a heightened sense of the absurd — a playful, almost naïve tone that’s completely at odds with its subject matter — that it can only come from real life. That turns out to be very much the case in the Venice Film Festival’s Horizons section opener Princess, a story based on the true-experiences of Nigerian sex workers, many of them trafficked, in contemporary Italy. The result is a curiously queasy mix of comedy and drama that, while taking an admirable view of its lead character as a complex heroine rather than a victim to be pitied, falls into many of the same tropes in more cliched depictions of prostitution.
The title character, Princess (Glory Kevin), works in a forest outside a major city with her friend Success, with whom she competes for “clients” — usually white men who pull up in their sports cars,...

Italian sales company True Colours has taken international sales on Venice Horizons opener “Princess,” a gritty drama about a young African sex trade victim, directed by Italian auteur Roberto De Paolis.
De Paolis, whose 2017 debut “Pure Hearts” launched positively from Cannes, recently described the film to Variety as “the unfiltered story of a young Nigerian who prostitutes herself in Ostia, outside Rome, in a seaside pine forest.”
“Princess” (see first-look trailer above) features Glory Kevin, a real victim of the sex trade, in the title role plus other non-professional actors with similar backgrounds. Rounding out the cast are Lino Musella (“The Young Pope”), Salvatore Striano (“Caesar Must Die”) and Maurizio Lombardi (“The New Pope”).
De Paolis in his press notes calls “Princess” “the result of merging my points of view with those of the young Nigerian women I met over a long period of time whilst researching for the film.

What more can one say about the world’s most famous Princess? Her relationships with Prince Charles, her children, Dodi Al Fayed, and the media have been covered so exhaustively that it comes as something of a surprise that Ed Perkins’ HBO documentary “The Princess” manages to be surprising and novel, if not exactly revelatory.
