The town of Wessex is having an election with long-time mayor Bud Calgrove running without any opposition. Dan Phillips (Fred Ewanuick) is a slacker bartender at Fern's. His ex-girlfriend Claire Kendall tells him that she's marrying Mike. In response, Dan tells her that he's running for mayor. When Calgrove is killed by a bus, Dan's joke candidacy is no longer such a joke. Deputy mayor Alan Duffy is out to stop him. His best friend Jeff works at Swifty Copy. The second season has Dan starting his job as the new mayor.

This is a mildly amusing Canadian sitcom. Ewanuick is a good comedic actor and half of the cast are doing good. The problem is that the other half is flat and lacking. Those supporting characters and actors have no charisma. The second season has the show trimming down to the better main cast but the humor never rises above mildly amusing.
  • I'm really happy this show has been renewed. I'm not nutty about any of the individual actors except Fred, but as an ensemble they somehow make the corny overdrama work. This effort is greatly assisted by the theme music which absolutely perfectly captures the feeling of the show.

After watching every episode, I feeling tickled and lighter. I think the tone of the show is uniquely Canadian. Even though it is nothing like Kids in the Hall, it reminds me of the perception created by the Kids that you are watching quintessential Canadiana (in a good way).

I hope they can keep up the pace, because I'd really like this show to last.

This show gets a big fail from me. The acting is terrible with unbelievable characters and the main character is just Hank from Corner Gas doing the exact same act that he was doing before, he is basically a big moron who is trying to do things he is too stupid to do. None of the characters are believable and this show is just a huge mess with nothing funny happening in it. I can't believe this show is even on TV in the first place it is so stupid and not funny at all. I have to write ten lines I guess so I will tell you I just bought a new goldfish because my last goldfish died he actually lived a real long time though for a goldfish so yeah.

This show is boring. The jokes are painful, it is even worse than the last season of Corner Gas where it was just in the same rut of doing the same predictable jokes again and again. First of all, the main character of Dan is basically just Hank without the baseball cap. I mean literally, he plays e x a c t l y the same character he did in Corner Gas except he is not wearing a hat. That is the only difference. He is a complete moron who has his head up in the clouds. The basic plot of the show has him running for mayor to try to impress people, then I guess it's supposed to be really funny because he is an idiot and screws things up. The supporting cast is also very bad but you can't blame them with material as bad as this. This show was a huge mistake and it's a toss up for me whether this is worse or Hiccups is, both of these shows are just awful.
  • This is an hilarious show. Fred Ewanuick is a very funny, likable person and that comes through in his character Dan, who basically starts running for Mayor in his community of Wessex as a joke with nobody expecting him to win, including himself. All of the character's are very likable, even the one's who aren't supposed to be likable are likable. Juggling his job as a bartender, his best friend (also a bartender) as his campaign manager, a shoe string campaign budget, his ex-girlfriend, his new girlfriend, his ex-girlfriends' new boyfriend, his new girlfriend's Aunt who does not like him and becomes his competitor for the job as Mayor and his own run for Mayor every episode has very funny moments and some twists and turns that you just do not see coming. Like a bus out of nowhere.Dan For Mayor kept me laughing and looking forward to each episode. Dan Ewanuick played Hank Yarbo on the CTV show Corner Gas before this and was very enjoyable as the second banana to Brett Butt's main character. In Dan For Mayor Fred holds his own as the top banana. He is very funny, witty and just great to watch. This is a very good show.By the way I have seen a few reviews that state this is just "Corner Gas" redux. I don't see it that way. You have a completelty different setting, the characters are not even remotely alike and the onlt thing that comes close are some of the 'flash" scenes but lots of shows do that. Some people are saying that Dan and Hank are the same but look at the differences; Hank had no job and did not seem to care to get one, Dan had a job as a bartender and then runs for Mayor. Hank had no girlfriend, Dan has an ex and a current in the first season then his ex comes back to him and they live together. Yes they are both laid back but Hank was more so than Dan. Also, on DFM, there is no Oscar, Emma, Lacey, Wanda, Karen, Davis, etc. The characters on DFM are completely different people. in conclusion this is not your "Corner Gas!"

This show is terrible. The acting is awful and the jokes are very bad.

It is better than Hiccups because at least the story of Dan For Mayor seems on the surface like it would be interesting but there is nothing worth while about this show.

First of all, Corner Gas was good for a couple seasons then went downhill real fast and just because a rehash of the same jokes and stories again and again. So it's kind of annoying that they immediately spun it off and gave the guy who played Hank his own show....where he STILL plays Hank! Seriously there is absolutely no difference between the characters in Corner Gas and Dan For Mayor. What is even the point of changing shows?

The jokes are predictable and unfunny, I will not watch again and I'm not happy that based on the success of Corner Gas this show and Hiccups are both coming back.....why?!?!
  • This is turning up to be a fun show. Ever since the deceased Carnahan won the senate race, I thought a show on the funnier lighter side of politics would be great. This show proves the point. We are constantly bombarded by the dark side of politics, but this show pokes fun at the more absurd and humorous part of running a political campaign. Added to this is the relationship triagles with Dan, his x-girlfriend, and his new girlfriend who happens to be the daughter of one of the other candidates he is running against. If this show can keep digging up new ways to portray the idiocies of politics in a fun way the show should go far.
  • Only the most die hard Corner Gas fan could possibly like this show.... I was a big Corner Gas fan and I can't even make myself get into this show at all. It is the same character as in Corner Gas so I am left wondering "Where is Lacy? Where is Brent? Where are Brent's parents?" it's like they gutted Corner Gas of all the stuff that maybe could have worked leaving us with just Hank the stupid guy but with no good characters for him to play off of this show is just pointless. The other characters are not performed very well, all the writing is predictable and the show just isn't very funny. Hank is too simple of a person to carry the show himself and the other actors just aren't interesting either. I give this show a big fail just like Hiccups which is also not a good show for many of the same reasons.

    Warning: Spoilers
I really do like this show. It has a lot of promise and I think that it will only get better over time. It is only two episodes in, but already I like the whole feel of the show. Dan, played by Fred Ewanuick, is just a likable average guy, but that what makes the show watchable. His ex- girlfriend, Claire, is also a good character. Like Corner Gas, this show features very average characters with reality written into it. Like Corner Gas, it's easy to just ease into what's going on. There have already been some excellent moments (the other mayor's experience with the bus) and I think that it will continue to do well. Please give the show a chance and watch it. I think that Corner Gas fans may not find this show to be as phenomenal as Corner Gas was, but it is still a show worth watching.

This show is stupid. It is way worse than Corner Gas even in the end when Corner Gas was not very good any more.

The character is the same Hank character as the above poster seemed to have noticed already too.

I don't like the show mostly for the characters who are not very believable and are just real shallow. I don't even really get the premise how he is supposed to have been cornered into having to run for mayor just to impress his ex girlfriend.

I don't like the acting and the jokes are not very good. This was a real disappointment to me.

It is much better than Hiccups but that show is just terrible, the Brent Butt comedy special was also really awful. Why are they making such bad shows after Corner Gas?

This is my theory.... that the show "Dan For Mayor" was created by a group of complete idiots who also write the show and perform all the characters. What other reason could there be for this show to be so completely bad in every respect? First of all is the main character, Dan, does he seem familiar to you because to me he is Hank from "Corner Gas". That wouldn't be so bad except after the first two or three seasons maybe of Corner Gas all the characters on that show because one dimensional, predictable, and old hat. That show went off the air before it became too awful but with Hank still on the air in this show he has gotten so unfunny that I can't stand watching him for more than a second or two. The other characters are equally bad. One dimensional, unbelievable, and un-entertaining/unfunny. The acting is not very good. His romantic challenger, who is/was engaged to his ex-girlfriend, is particularly awful. His friend/campaign manager is one note and boring. The two young girls Hank/Dan may be interested in are good looking enough but neither is a very good actress and neither have much acting experience (no surprise there). The writing is terrible (clicking the names shows it's the same group of guys who did "Corner Gas", they are probably just out of ideas and too busy cashing cheques from making that show to come up with good original ideas. This show is terrible and well worth skipping.
  • This is one of the worst shows on TV. I know that a lot of people were gaga over Corner Gas but this show just sucks! For one thing if they were going to do another show about Hank Yarbo from Corner Gas why not just keep doing Corner Gas instead? Because that show had other characters in it that were interesting and funny. Instead we have Hank Yarbo as Dan who runs for mayor despite the fact he's a drooling idiot to try to impress his ex-girlfriend. He's the same character! Also the other characters are all terrible and terribly acted, none of them are funny and the jokes are all terrible too. Wow what is coming to Canadian TV?

This show was pretty bad. I give it more stars than it deserves because I always watched Corner Gas but this show just doesn't even come close to comparing even though the star (Ewanuick) is doing basically the exact same character here. None of the characters/actors is funny in this show and the writing is awful.
  • I'm sad that I did not like this show more. I gave it enough of a chance it is the end of season one and I have seen every episode except one. The jokes in all those episodes have not made me laugh once and I find ever single character to be annoying and poorly acted. The most annoying thing to me is that Fred Ewanwuick has not changed his character one bit from when he was Hank on Corner Gas (sorry if I'm spelling it wrong but that last name's a tough one). I was a Corner Gas fan so even though I didn't think the previews for these shows made it look like they were very good, and even when friends told me Hiccups and Dan For Mayor were both terrible, I hoped my gut feeling was somehow wrong and I would like these shows. No such luck. Ever since episode one I have been very disappointed with both shows, equally disappointed in how bad and unfunny they are. The characters in both shows are just terrible! I can't believe they got a season two but I hope they can somehow turn both shows around so that they are good, I don't see how that's possible though even if they replace all the writers and start getting good writing like Corner Gas had the characters are a huge problem.
  • Sorry but if I had to do a three word only review for this show it would easily be just a simply "it wasn't funny" and that is a really bad thing for a comedy show obviously. The characters were annoying and unbelievable, one or possibly even zero dimensions of depth to them, and nobody in the entire show could in any way tell a joke to make it funny at all.

The stories were stupid and this show was about one one billionth as interesting and funny as Corner Gas which I have to be honest is not saying much.

Why are comedy shows so much better in the states?
