  • I had no idea what this film was before watching . The info button on my remote gave a brief synopsis that it was about a bunch of tourists who find themselves stuck in the remote South African veldt . Sounds exactly the premise for some torture porn along the lines of WOLF CREEK . Is this how it turned out ? Well yes and no

Certainly it's an unpleasant film in parts but where as traditional torture porn the whole selling point is the camera lingering voyeuristically on the victim trying to sicken the audience as the victims anguished , pain stricken pleas fall upon deaf ears here the camera cuts away from the on screen carnage leaving it to the audiences imagination as to the horrors befalling the hapless victim . I'm guessing this is trying to be a psychological torture porn horror rather than a traditional one but it's still very unpleasant

Another turn off are the characters . It's been mentioned by some of my peers on this page is that they've been given a lot of backstory and this is true and no doubt was done so that don't appear as mere cyphers come victims like you see n most horror movies . That said all the characters are either boring or unlikable or both and this sort of sums up the movie which is boring and unlikable at the same time

Night Drive is set inside the Nyari private game reserve in Mpumalanga, South Africa where gamekeeper Jack Darwin (Greg Melvill-Smith) is angry that his anti-poaching unit is being canned by his boss because of publicity fears. Jack believes that the public has every right to fear as he is convinced gangs of armed men wander the reserves killing anyone they meet to use in sadistic rituals held by the so called 'Hyena Man' & his men, Jack's boss is having none of it & says that he has to supervise a group of tourists on a night drive, a safari drive through the game reserve but at night. Jack is unhappy but has zero choice so along with his man Akani (Yule Masiteng) they prepare for the night drive. Suddenly Jack's son Sean (Christopher Beasley) turns up & joins them & the tourists in order to scatter hate mother's ashes, while enjoying the South African landscape tourist Karen (Corine Du Toit) stumbles upon a mutilated corpse left by the Heyena Man gang. Soon they are being stalked, attacked & killed by the gang...

This South African production was written & directed by Justin Head & is pretty bad, in fact it's just about as bad as any American low budget horror. The script is a mess, what could have been a great horror thriller that explored the cultural heritage of South Africa & used it's myth's & legends to add considerable background to the story all the script offers is some vague rubbish about Voodoo & a few almost pitch black rituals involving slicing people up with machetes. The character's are all stock horror film clichés, the cop with a dark past which he feels great guilt for, the father who has a uneasy relationship with his son until they need to pull together, a really annoying white guy who makes really bad decisions & seems to try his hardest to make people hate him, the romantic love interest who the hero falls in love with & a few other faceless people who are there merely to add to the body count. Night Drive lasts for over 100 minutes, there is no way that Night Drive needed to be that long & it really drags in places, then there's the lack of ambition shown here as the terrain & locations are never used to any sort of effect, a large part of the film is set around one small log fire in the middle of nowhere, the bad guy's have little motivation which could be for either supernatural or financial reasons & it's throughly predictable. Little in the way of horror, there's nothing particularly thrilling about it & I would have a very hard time recommending it to anyone, even the most die hard of low budget horror fans.

With only seven user comments & only three external reviews so far on the IMDb as I write this I assume that Night Drive is pretty obscure, it's certainly never been released on DVD here in the UK although it has played on cable television which is how I saw it & I presume this hasn't seen the light of day in the US either & with good reason as it's a tough sell. Forget about the South African locations as they are all but wasted, most of the film looks to have been shot in the same part of some forest somewhere, none of the local culture or colour or wildlife seems to have been used apart from a few random shots of Hyenas. The gore is forgettable, there's some blood splatter, a guy gets impaled on a machete, a woman is seen with her arm hacked off, there's a mutilated corpse & a few gory gunshot wounds but little else & I can only think of one on screen kill. The final third of Night Drive descends into a shoot em up with lots of people firing guns at each other in some very dull scenes. Night Drive is also very dark at times, if the makers filmed outside at night for real it looks like they didn't bring their own lighting.

Probably shot on a low budget Night Drive looks like most cheap horror films, it's reasonably well made but forgettable & again the locations are wasted. Filmed in South Africa. The acting is alright, again typical low budget horror film stuff.

Night Drive is a really boring & tame horror thriller that could have been really good, the lack of use of the locations & the cultural background of the country feels like a missed opportunity & apart from it's setting there's nothing here that stands out from all the low budget horror rubbish that litter video shop shelves.

A dodgy zero-budget South African horror film. I had high hopes for this one, as there aren't many mainstream films made in South Africa and the exotic terrain and wildlife automatically makes for an interesting movie backdrop. Unfortunately after a mildly promising introduction this turns out to be bottom of the barrel entertainment, one that's entirely predictable and clichéd by genre standards.

The whole film is based around a night-time safari drive which is interrupted by a gang of murderous poachers keen on covering their trail. Unfortunately for the viewer, most of the people on the safari are irritating and unlikeable. The first half offers an acceptable build-up, but when all the action hits in the second half it takes place in complete darkness, so that the viewer is squinting all the while trying to work out what's happening.

Not a lot really, other than people being butchered with machetes all the while. It all plays out familiarly, and it seems in part to be a reflection on Apartheid relations in South Africa: the beginning with whites murdering blacks, then the blacks rising up and slaughtering the rich white folk, before a twist at the climax with the whites serving justice on the blacks. Hints at black magic add up to little and NIGHT DRIVE as a whole is a nasty and pointless little exercise.
  • Dreary, derivative mess of a movie that looks great but is so thin on content it's script must have been written on the back of a piece of toilet paper.

It's that bad - really. Performances range from appalling to OMFG what was that???!!! When I bought the DVD from Next Entertainment it was originally an incorrect printing on the disc - some dodgy religious music - I should have trusted fate and let my subconscious know it wasn't going to lose 100 overlong self-indulgent moments of it's life to some hackneyed amateurs that really don't know the first thing about horror.

Sorry if I sound harsh to any of the film-makers who may be scanning the pages of the IMDb for reviews of their "masterpiece" but seriously guys - watch a few more of the classics from the sixties and seventies, get some decent references in there and for God's sake hire a new scriptwriter.

I'm revealing nothing by saying there's a painfully obvious twist that you can see coming about ten minutes into the film.

The reason I'm being so harsh on this film is because the ad campaign was so damn good - it didn't live up to any of the hype. The worst mistake any horror film can make is to be boring.

Watch The Unforgiving for a much better, albeit not great, example of South African horror.

Firstly, I'm reminded of my favorite now gone horror review site and a "rule" they mentioned sometimes - a horror movie shouldn't run over ninety minutes unless it has something special for audience members.

Additionally, I'm reminded of the fifty movie pack I once bought, and some among those films share the habit of padding the film with a sequence that adds little to the movie. Night Drive's was worse - it rendered the central characters as unlikable.

Apparently drugged people experience motion like a 1st-person Nintendo 64 shooter - their walking viewpoint looking like the perspective of someone sliding across the ground instead of walking.

It's also kinda like the inverse of the haunted house film Dead Birds, where the crew mixed an atmospheric film with gory scenes, here its a character-driven splatter flick, which doesn't really work because the characters aren't that endearing. The elderly couple were probably the most charismatic characters and contributed little.

Ultimately the film falls flat because the pieces, well, technically fit together, just not very well.
  • Turned it off in less than 5 minutes i dont why film makers think the f word is cute a few of those repeately in first couple minutes and off it went

may i ask one thing here where was the director of this movie who was giving direction for everything here how to film it it looks like he ran off in middle of the film leaving the cast & crew on their own to do whatever with the project.

what category this film falls under is out of my head is suspense, comedy or spoof this film is called night suicide because it is filled with some serious nonsense.

the plot is about some tourists come to south Africa and get involved with bad guys playing games with them.

i salute these actors who were involved during the shooting of this horror some real patience they showed the script was written by kids.

there is hardly in light use in this film the cameramen and technical department were sleeping i guess second is that unnecessary blood and gore instead of the good narrative, its been done so many times like kidnapping, revenge and murder some people are saying online that it is torture porn i totally agree with critics and the people i have wasted my time and money on this boring drama with overlong running time.

overall night drive 2010 should not be watched even once its not worth it my rating is 1/10. Skipp it

Jack (Greg Melvill-Smith) works at a game preserve chasing poachers and guiding tourists. His son Sean (Christopher Beasley) is a recently dismissed police officer. He joins his estranged father on a night time tourist safari. It is reported that refugees are being hunted by paramilitary men and that there is a "Hyena Man" leading the group.

Much of the action is shot at night. Most of the hacking is done by listening to screams in the dark. There are some hyena eyes that show up near the end. but for the most part, this could have been filmed anywhere as scenery was seldom shown. I got bored shortly after the opening scenes.

Parental Guide: F-bombs. Male rear nudity.

South African cinema may have a long way to go before it can churn out movies as good as District 9 on a regular basis, but I'm happy to see them step away from movies about apartheid and racism and try something different once in awhile. While I've seen scarier movies than Night Drive, I did think it delivered the goods enough times to make it worthwhile. The writing and dialogue won't win any Oscars, but it never seemed to get tripped up with anything too obvious and contrived. It was a bloody slasher flick that knew when to be scary and when to give us a breather.

The African bush offers a lot of potential for scary movies and I hope this is something filmmakers keep exploring. The juxtaposition of its daylight beauty with its nighttime dangers can take a good writer and director anywhere. Hopefully Night Drive is just a start with what can be done when filmmakers take advantage of what their own country offers them.
  • Professionally made. Decent dialogue & acting etc. (or at least good enough for me). But the storyline/plot was just boring and wasn't interesting at all. To me, a movie worth watching only one time is a 5. This movie was okay quality, but held no value otherwise. It's not worth seeing, not even once. So, I gave it a 4. I would certainly consider seeing a movie made by the same people or with the same actors, hopefully with a better storyline.
  • NIGHT DRIVE is one of two English language contributions to the horror genre from South African film makers and it was also refreshing to see a South African film that didn't revolve around Apartheid or racism and for the life of me I still don't know why there has to be so many films that are about Apartheid and racism, they're like a dozen remakes of one film about a subject that's been exploited up to a point where you need to tell script writers to find a new hobby.

Anyway I really enjoyed NIGHT DRIVE, it was very much along the lines of WRONG TURN and a not so well known but very good horror movie called BORDERLAND that revolved around three young people taking a trip to Mexico and becoming potential victims of a cult sacrificing people in their rituals and its based on true events.

However, like the negative comment on NIGHT DRIVE's IMDb web page stated this film is offensive, South African critics were divided in a way I never saw before but that is what a film of this genre has always done, there is also a golden rule a film maker needs to know, if you're afraid to offend people then don't make a film like this because that's exactly what it will do, this film will rub a few people the wrong way mainly because the plot revolves around poaching and black magic but what the film isn't is thin on plot, the characters are well developed even though they're not very likable some of the fates that befall most of the victims here are acts you wouldn't even wish on your worst enemy and that automatically makes you cheer for the protagonists, that's what this film does very well, it depicts killers that are just that evil.

The acting is good all around, its not as plastic as in South Africa's favorite soap opera called 7DE LAAN, the cast here really do a good job with the material.

Overall, fans of films like WRONG TURN and THE HILLS HAVE EYES should probably like this film, the gore effects are well done as well its not that digital crap its gore that's actually there and the acting is very good too and for a South African production it doesn't look cheap at all, it has great production values for a South African film.
  • Released in 2010 and written/directed by Justin Head, "Night Drive" is a South African action/adventure with horror elements about an evening safari drive with a group of six tourists, two guides and the son of the head guide. They run afoul of violent poachers and their mad witchdoctor.

This is a stylish and violent flick with gore galore and a cool, unconventional opening. It eventually settles into a survival situation in the night wilderness. I don't know what the budget was, but the movie doesn't come across as low-budget; it's expertly made. Unfortunately, we don't really get to know the tourists, except for an unbelievably hostile dude, who's a turn-off. As such, it's hard to care about them and their outcome. The main protagonist is good (the son of the head guide), but the filmmakers drop the ball with the women. I suppose the white woman would've worked out, but they don't do enough with her. I did like the unexpected revelation about the witchdoctor at the end, but the second half should've been better considering the quality set-up. The script needed spruced-up to make the most of the situation, increase suspense, etc. Still, this is a very worthwhile jungle adventure with a side of horror.

The film runs 103 minutes and was shot Johannesburg and Broederstroom, North West, South Africa.

    GRADE: Borderline B/B- (6.5/10)

Horror is a vast continent. This really is a very harsh trip that has it moments of repulsion and nausea.

There are sympathetic characters but the film doesn't reward them. Mainly it's about a bunch of crass, vacuous and duplicitous people finding out abruptly that you should check the political situation in a country before doing the tourist thing. The film teaches us that contempt for natives can backfire.

You may not identify with these tourists which makes it difficult to appreciate the journey they make. It took me three attempts to get past the sheer nastiness of what's on show to appreciate that the visitors really are in a dark place.

I don't mind Hollywood gloss but I'm chiefly at home with the B movies and the straight-to-video fair. I'm always looking for the silver lining to unpromising material. I can't find fault with the production values, the script or the acting. Of course there is a guy there you wouldn't want to be stuck in a lift with.
  • This movie not just another South African movie like the others,it has all the potential to be a great Hollywood movie. The cinematography is just too good, the movie moves along a nice pace and also manages to explain the concept very well. The movie also manages to send chills down your spine,if you like horror movies and love to get scared then i recommend watching this movie at night. There are quite a lot of blood scenes in the movie and boy oh boy ,hats off to the camera guys, trust me this was the first time where i thought those blood and violence scenes weren't funny. Also the movie keeps you in suspense as to what is happening. And before i forget the background sound/music in this movie makes it what it is.

Final Word: Highly Recommended as i see this movie has all the elements covered up pretty nicely.

I have to mention that the marketing campaign behind Night Drive in South Africa has been every bit as engrossing, controversial and entertaining as the film itself. Ahead of the film's local release, fake pamphlets advertising a quack doctor paying cash for human body parts – as well as offering rhino horn – were distributed in a middle-class suburb of Johannesburg. It caused an uproar that quickly went viral and spread across the globe. When the campaign was finally revealed as being part of a spoof marketing campaign for the film it created an unprecedented public outrage. Rhino conservation and so-called 'muti' murders in South Africa are very sensitive issues, particularly the illegal trade in human body parts which most consider a taboo subject. The campaign brought these issues into the mindset of middle-class South Africa and probably created a much-needed awareness and focus on these crimes, not to mention an effective promotional tool for the film. It reminded me of the public hysteria generated by Orson Welles's radio show where listeners actually believed earth was being invaded by aliens.

Marketing campaigns aside, Night Drive is a long overdue genre film from South Africa, and it doesn't fail to deliver. I attended a special screening in downtown Johannesburg not expecting much from the film. It's been tried in South Africa before and just never managed to hit the mark. Night Drive grabbed me from the get-go and I felt unsettled, disturbed, emotionally charged and entertained all at once. Stark cinematography, a haunting score, strong direction and a well-written script gives Night Drive its gritty and realistic edge. Billed as a slasher film, I actually thought it had more of the hallmarks of a thriller, but I guess the blood, guts and gore took care of any intellectualizing.

The film's about an ex-undercover cop who joins a group of tourists on a night drive safari deep into the heart of the African bush, where they find themselves stranded after their vehicle breaks down. Then s**t starts to hit the fan. As the plot unfolds and the blood starts flowing, the ex-cop learns that animal poachers are now targeting humans for their body parts to be used for witchcraft purposes. Their leader is a mysterious witchdoctor known as the Hyena Man who has notorious reputation for terrorizing the locals. The chilling atmosphere is further amplified by the sounds of hyenas circling the tourists who are known to have developed a taste for human blood because of all the victims left in the Hyena Man's wake. All this proves to be a volatile cocktail when the tourists start turning on each other amidst the carnage.

A good thriller explores the darker side of human nature and Night Drive does this credibly, with excellent performances from the ensemble cast. The film is brutal and bloody but still manages to seamlessly interweave the back stories of each one of the characters into one chilling theme: how fear can consume us.

It's a gutsy move by the filmmakers to take on some very contentious issues affecting South Africa: violence, poaching and 'muti' murders – but isn't that what films are supposed to do: be provocative? Despite all the controversy, I think it's a thoroughly entertaining film and a welcome addition to the South African film stable.

  • Night Drive is arguably one of the most publicized and controversial films in South Africa's history. Never before have local critics been so divided about one of this country's feature films. Most liberal critics were offended by its portrayal of the so-called 'Dark Continent', whilst others relished the country's first all-or-nothing thriller/horror flick.

The film is what is. I don't think it had any aspirations to be the country's next Oscar hopeful. It certainly doesn't give the proverbial intellectual hand-job. But if you're looking for 'bloody' good Saturday night entertainment, Night Drive delivers.

My biggest problem with Night Drive is the distinct lack of hot chicks with big boobs in wet t-shirts. Isn't there always at least one in a film like this? Or maybe this was their idea of a departure from the formula, but still...

There was something about Night Drive that did strike a chord with me though. While I've been living in the relative safety of my white middle-class suburban existence, people are being murdered daily for witchcraft purposes in SA. The victims are usually from impoverished communities where superstition is rife. Night Drive turned the tables on this one and put me in their shoes. This is a case where the truth is in fact more horrifying than fiction.

A night drive through the South African bush turns into a deadly game of survival after a group of tourists find themselves being hunted by deadly poachers. Writer/director Justin Head relates the gripping story at a quick pace, maintains an unsparingly tough and gritty tone throughout, generates a considerable amount of nerve-wracking suspense, and makes nice use of the desolate bush locations. The solid acting by the capable cast keeps this picture humming: Christopher Beasley as disgraced cop Sean Darwin, Corine Du Toit as the depressed and suicidal Karen, Greg Melvill-Smith as rugged game warden Jack, Yule Masiteng as Jack's easygoing partner Akani, Brandon Auret as obnoxious antagonistic cokehead jerk Ian, Antonio David Lyons as the dashing Denzel, David Sherwood as kindly old gent Rodger Turner, Clare Marshall as Rodger's sweet wife Mary, and Matshepo Maleme as the feisty Tumi. The shocking moments of raw and gruesome violence pack a savage punch. Trevor Calverley's sharp cinematography provides an impressive slick look. Benjamin Willem's throbbing tribal score does the rousing trick. A neat'n'nasty little item.

Wow, only a 4.5 IMDb rating?? It was a great horror film with excellent suspense & acting. The only thing I would say is that the name of the film really doesn't do it justice. Anyway, a group of people from different backgrounds go out on a safari in a Land Rover type safari truck. They stop for a moment to enjoy the scenery then suddenly people from the group start disappearing. What happens to them is truly a nightmare! It has a "Wrong Turn" kind-of plot to it where the people are basically hunted by mysterious people hidden in the brush. Sure, it's not a 10/10 film, but what horror movie is? Suspenseful until the ending credits! Solid 8/10
