    Unique Subject Matter

We continue to be brought into the characters and the plot. The alternate universe idea is presented to us through a classroom lecture, although the person presenting it is dealing strictly in theory. Auggie must make a decision and chooses the "safer" course. The magic headset sends characters into a realm where there decisions are those of life and death. Yet the character with the decision has not the slightest knowledge of the rules of the game. We continue to see the mysterious woman who talked with Auggie but who cannot be seen in the video representation. I'm looking forward to seeing what the discovery by the Chinese woman bodes for the world. Anyway, it is an utterly creative episode. Did someone say that nothing happens? By the way, could we stop comparing it to the book. I feel that a movie should stand on its own, not be compared to another art form. If one is a hard-core science fiction reader, maybe this is valid. Ultimately, a movie script and a set of characters can't compete on the same terms.

    Beyond the surface

In this episode, we dive deep into the complexities of the characters and the day to day life, not the same pace as the first episode but definitely as good.

I can see the plot drawing itself from here now on and thickening even more and the subplots being more and more interesting. Though, tell now, i can't connect the VR with the alien thing, maybe in the next episodes we will connect the two worlds, who knows!

And as i said, as the main plot unfolds we can see the world build-up on the events of the first episode. Yet, we need more as its an hour long episode.

For now, we're left waiting for the next twist to reveal itself as im sure mid-season episode will be better than all before it!

    Magic box strikes again

Yep, J. J. Abrams' magic box strikes again in this episode. Throughout the whole episode - approximately one full hour - nothing worth mentioning happens, and the last sixty seconds (literally), we are shown something remotely interesting.

By the way, the opening them of the show is an obvious rip-off of season one opening theme and music of "Westworld". I am sure anyone who watched the first season of "Westworld" will notice that.

Other than that, a complete snore fest. Characters are so blank and so blah you can hardly stay awake watching this excuse of a TV show.

Before I forget, there are some subtle "references" to lately recent events prior to the development of this show, which are now in scrutiny today.

How time affects our perception, right?

So many detective show tropes just in Ep. 1!

I'm going to give it 2 episodes, but 8 minutes in, I'm already bored. I feel like I've seen it several times already because it's extremely similar to other detective shows. Which, i suppose, is kind of nice, audiences like familiar things. But it seems like every show has the following: main character detective first seen out for a run, check; detective with a daughter, check (daughter will probably get taken by criminals at some point?); hint at something tragic in detective's past check, spouse of detective annoyed because detective's work always comes first, check; detective taking a shower (especially if female), check. It is filmed in a beautiful location, though.

    It's engrossing.

I worried that this was going to go way over my head, but I was able to follow and understand it, and more importantly, it translated really well from the book.

Episode one was very much a grand affair, setting out the basic plot and giving us an idea of the scale of the series, this second episode, though it does develop the plot, is more an in depth look into the characters.

I spoke to some friends earlier, who said they quit at this point, as they couldn't get through the gaming angle, it's a real shame, I'm not a gamer, but this really did appeal to me.

I just love that we've been given a show that is making us think and concentrate, it's more complex and deeper than anything I've seen for some time.

    The visuals are extraordinary.

    Next level..... can't wait.

    8/10.

    • Trivia
The Wow! signal mentioned in the episode was an actual event. A strong signal that lasted 72 seconds was detected by the Big Ear radio telescope of Ohio State University in August 15th, 1977. The event got this name because Jerry Ehman, the astronomer responsible for reviewing the data, wrote "Wow!" in red on the left side of the computer printout, due to impressiveness and rarity of that recording.

When Young Ye Wenjie is aiming the dish at the sun the shadow of the antenna is shown moving away from the dish's center instead of towards it.

Message from Pacifist (alien): Do not answer. Do not answer. Do not answer. I am a pacifist in this world. You are lucky that I am the first to receive your message. I am warning you: do not answer. If you respond, we will come. Your world will be conquered. Do not answer.

Ye Wenjie: Come. We cannot save ourselves. I will help you conquer this world.
