The story of Paan Singh Tomar, an Indian athlete and seven-time national steeplechase champion who becomes one of the most feared dacoits in Chambal Valley after his retirement.
There's an inside story, an incident which happened between the Director, Tigmanshu Dhulia and the lead, Irrfan Khan. Both of them were classmates in National School of Drama, and there Tigmanshu had promised Irrfan that one day, he will try and get Irrfan one national award for acting. In the following phase of life, Irrfan got bored of mediocre television roles which he was getting to play, and expressed his desire to quit acting to Tigmanshu, on which the latter said, "Don't you remember? I'm gonna get you a national award, come let's make a film together." That's when Haasil (2003) happened, in which Irrfan's acting was praised critically and then, Irrfan won the National award for acting for Paan Singh Tomar, both the films were directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia.

Pan Singh Tomar told his interviewer that International Defence Athletic Meet was the most important race of his life, however no record was involved. In the flashback his elder brother was telling the fellow villagers that in recently concluded International Defence Athletics Meet Subedar Paan Singh Tomar has broken his own record.
