Exclusive: Tim Daly (Wings) and Veronica Ferres (Hector and the Search for Happiness) have been tapped for roles in Unholy Trinity, rounding out the ensemble for the Western helmed by Robert the Bruce‘s Richard Gray. The actors join an ensemble that also includes Pierce Brosnan, Samuel L. Jackson, Brandon Lessard, and Q’orianka Kilcher, as previously announced.
Currently shooting under an Interim Agreement, the film written by Lee Zachariah is set against the turbulent backdrop of 1870s Montana. It picks up in the moments before the execution of Isaac Broadway, as he gives his estranged son, Henry (Lessard), an impossible task: murder the man who framed him for a crime he didn’t commit. Intent on fulfilling his promise, Henry travels to the remote town of Trinity, where an unexpected turn of events traps him in town and leaves him caught between Gabriel Dove (Brosnan), the town’s upstanding new sheriff,...

Domestic theaters, now mostly reopen even with five new studio movies in the last three weeks, could only muster a total gross of $45 million this past weekend. That’s less than a quarter of what the same weekend in 2019 took in. That week was dominated by “Toy Story 4.” Disney released the Pixar sequel targeting the Father’s Day audience. That timing only added to an already monster hit that took in $121 million initially, and $434 million domestic all told.
This weekend, two new films were timed to Father’s Day, at least in part. Unfortunately for struggling theaters, neither had them in mind.
“Luca,” Pixar’s latest, debuted on Disney+ free for subscribers (unlike some other recent Premium VOD offerings). No viewership reports have emerged. But the figure might have been in the millions just in the U.S. And with the low end of a Pixar opening this century at $39 million,...

Exclusive: Quiver Entertainment, an offshoot of eOne executive Berry Meyerowitz and onetime Lionsgate Films president Jeff Sackman’s Quiver Distribution, has acquired the rights to Kew Media Distribution’s library of 1,000 titles.
Kew Media Distribution went bust in February and administrator Fti Consulting has overseen the sale of its catalog, within which it included the international rights to shows including hit BBC drama Line Of Duty and the HBO/Channel 4 Michael Jackson documentary Leaving Neverland.
Nearly 40 companies expressed an interest in acquiring the library, which Fti then whittled down to nine potential buyers. It entered into exclusive talks with Quiver Entertainment after March 27. The financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
The sale has been far from straightforward. Prior to Kew Media Distribution going bust, a number of producers took action to terminate their contracts with the company after it failed to pay them royalties they were owed.

In a year in which one of the best, buzziest, and most lauded films is a three-hander starring some of Hollywood’s best actresses, it’s only fitting that a list of best performances by women be deep. From indie stalwarts to rising stars, fresh faces to some of Hollywood’s most reliable performers, 2018 has played home to a wealth of films ruled by women, and compiling a list of the best of the bunch proved to be easy (so many choices) and difficult (so many choices).
As with the year’s best film performances by men, the best of the bunch hailed from a variety of films and genres. For every massive blockbuster like “Crazy Rich Asians,” there’s an indie dark horse like “Hereditary,” and that each kind of film could include work worthy of inclusion on any best-of list speaks to the strength of this year’s picks.

Netflix sued Relativity Media on Friday, accusing the bankrupt mini-studio of violating an exclusivity agreement by providing five films to Amazon and Starz.
The streaming service also accuses Relativity of failing to provide the required number of releases for 2017. Netflix is seeking $12.6 million in damages for the exclusivity violations, plus $5 million for each film Relativity failed to deliver.
Relativity declared bankruptcy last month for the second time in three years, as it seeks a court-approved sale to UltraV Holdings. Since emerging from the first bankruptcy in 2016, Relativity founder Ryan Kavanaugh has been unable to raise fresh capital to produce new films.
Relativity continues to have an output agreement with Netflix, first signed in 2010, which Relativity considers to be “one of the crown jewel assets of the estate,” according to the filing. Under the deal, Relativity was originally supposed to provide 15 titles to Netflix in 2017. Following its first bankruptcy, the company revised that total,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… There’s charm and wit in its fanciful depiction of the creative process, but the film downplays the social activism that Dickens fully embraced in his work. I’m “biast” (pro): love Dickens and A Christmas Carol
I’m “biast” (con): haven’t been the biggest fan of Dan Stevens
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Did Charles Dickens really invent our modern observance of Christmas? Well… he certainly contributed to it, with his beloved 1843 novella A Christmas Carol bringing to it a spirit of family celebration and togetherness and moving the holiday away from its religious grounding to a more secular one focused on ecumenical kindness and generosity. But we also have Prince Albert to thank, for importing his German Yuletide customs — such as evergreens and Christmas trees — to England when he married...

On the last quiet weekend before elevated titles enter the fray, M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” (Universal) gets a shot of repeating #1 for the third week, with the only significant contender being “Rings” (Paramount), yet another horror franchise entry.
In addition to “Split,” “Rings” will battle “Hidden Figures,” “La La Land,” and the second weekend of “A Dog’s Purpose” (Universal) for positions among the top six. There’s also “The Space Between Us” (Stx), the second science-fiction romance after “Passengers” in under two months. None of these films are likely to bring in even $15 million, and not all are guaranteed to top $10 million.
Super Bowl weekend is reliably one of the lowest grossing of the year. Like other weak weekends (post Labor Day, some Halloweens, early December), there’s an element of self-fulfilling prophecy as studios avoid it for top releases. Still, free from direct competition, it’s a...

Forget Elon Musk, in Peter Chelsom’s heartfelt drama The Space Between Us, Gary Oldman is the high-flying scientist who dreams up Earth’s bold Mars program. He’ll play Nasa director Nathaniel Shepherd in the December release and thanks to Empire, we now have our first look at a bespectacled Oldman welcoming Gardner Elliot (Asa Butterfield) on stage at a space event.
Butterfield anchors the picture as the brainy teenager, who is marooned on the Red Planet after his mother dies during childbirth far, far from home. Struggling to connect with the denizens of Earth, Elliot strikes up an online relationship with Tulsa (Britt Robertson), despite the fact they’re separated by 225 million kilometres of nothingness – hence the title. He won’t be a Martian for much longer, though, with Shepherd and the remainder of Nasa drafting up plans for his safe return. But whereas it’s easy to...

Stx Entertainment has released the second trailer for their upcoming sci-fi adventure The Space Between Us. The movie stars Gary Oldman, Asa Butterfield, Carla Gugino, Britt Robertson. And it will be in theaters this December just in time for the holidays.
This story of a boy (Asa Butterfield) born on Mars' first colony has an added element of timeliness with this week's real life Mars news! SpaceX Founder Elon Musk just delivered a keynote address on Tuesday at the International Astronautical Congress. As it turns out, he plans to colonize Mars! Which is a subject explored with great depth in The Space Between Us.

Among the sequels and reboots, there are also some exciting-looking original sci-fi films to look forward to in 2016. And here they are...
Did you see Coherence? Or maybe Predestination? They’re but two examples of relatively low-budget, original genre films that were both beautifully made and endlessly watchable. What they lacked in expensive special effects they more than made up for in mesmerising concepts and superb performances, whether it was from a cast of relative unknowns in Coherence or the perfect pairing of Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook in Predestination.
Only time will tell whether 2016 will play host to films as good as those, but we have to say, there are some potentially great sci-fi films on the horizon this year. Some have generous budgets and top-line casts, others are independently produced. For different reasons, all look well worth keeping an eye on...

Authentically female in how it gets inside a lifelong friendship between two women, and as wisely funny as it is sharply poignant. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast, desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
It is a great tragedy of our culture that men are not encouraged to have the same sort of intensely emotional and hugely supportive relationships among themselves that women have with other women. Men are forced to find their emotional support, sometimes their only such support, from wives or girlfriends, while their wives and girlfriends have entire networks of friends — who slot into a sometimes massive and ever-shifting hierarchy that starts with Occasional Drinking Buddy to Bff — to whom we turn for advice, encouragement, mutual bitching sessions, pats on the back, and so much more.

Director: Terry Jones; Screenwriters: Gavin Scott, Terry Jones; Starring: Simon Pegg, Kate Beckinsale, Robin Williams, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Eric Idle, Michael Palin; Running time: 86 mins; Certificate: 12A
Legendary studio mogul Jack Warner once described the film Bonnie and Clyde as "a three piss picture", so disengaged was he with what was happening on screen he'd duck out multiple times for a bathroom break. Simon Pegg's latest comedy boasts a bladder-friendly 86-minute running time, but this is very much a "check-your-watch-three-times" kind of affair. You'll want to be absolutely anywhere else but sat in a darkened theatre witnessing this comedic travesty.
On paper, it all sounds much more appealing. Pegg takes the lead as school teacher Neil Clarke, a fortysomething ordinary Joe who's hand-picked by a group of aliens (voiced by the surviving Monty Python cast) to test out Earth's value in the cosmos. Granted infinite power,...

An intergalactic love story originally set up at now-bankrupt Relativity under the title "Out of This World" has now migrated to Stx Entertainment, a fast-growing, deep-pocketed film and TV studio launched last year by Robert Simonds. Relativity, which has had a hell of a week, had not fully greenlit the project when Stx began bidding in mid-July. UK film arm of European distributor withdraws from theatrical.
Two years after entering the competitive UK distribution space with an ambition to theatrically release 25 films per year, the UK film arm of European distributor Koch Media is to withdraw from theatrical.
Koch Media UK will instead focus on home entertainment releasing and look to consolidate its mainstay of video game distribution.
The transition will see some staff leave the company and others move across to the home entertainment department.
As part of the restructure, Koch UK will relocate its film distribution team to new company headquarters in Reading, where they will be joined by employees from the company’s Hampshire branch, which concentrates on video games.
Koch Media MD for Northern Europe Craig McNicol explained the strategy to ScreenDaily: “Our observation of the UK theatrical market has been that over the last couple of years there has clearly been a paradigm shift.

I hate movies like this, in which it’s meant to be adorable when people lie in the name of love. And I particularly hate what this movie does to Lake Bell. I’m “biast” (pro): love Lake Bell and Simon Pegg
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of most romantic comedies
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Nancy is 34 years old. She doesn’t have a boyfriend. This is all we know about her, but honestly, do we really need to know anything else about a woman apart from whether she has done her lady-duty and gotten herself paired off yet? And on the day that she is supposed to be heading to her parents’ 40th-anniversary party, she is distracted by a chance meeting with Jack (Simon Pegg: The Boxtrolls, Hector and the Search for Happiness) at Waterloo railway station in London.

The hand-drawn animation is serene and charming, but the story and characters are so unpleasantly retrograde that I found little enjoyment here. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

Maybe it’s because I was not introduced to the beloved Moomins when I was a child. But I don’t see the attraction. Sure, Finnish cartoonist Tove Jansson’s family of hippo-like creatures are odd but gentle bohemians, which should theoretically appeal to me. Yes, the hand-drawn animation is more serene than the CGI onslaught that modern animation tends to be; it’s simple yet charming and reflects the colors and esthetics of the time when this story first appeared in British newspaper comic strips in 1955 (even though the original strips where in black-and-white, of course). In my head I’m calling this film What Is This I Can’t Even: The Movie. In fact, the bearing it does have on the story hardly makes any sense at all, not on the level of plot, character, or theme. New on Netflix this June: "Sense8," the new sci-fi drama from Andy and Lana Wachowski ("The Matrix" trilogy) and "Babylon 5" creator J. Michael Straczynski, in which eight strangers suddenly find themselves mysteriously connected. Also, look for the return of Netflix original series "Orange Is the New Black" on June 12.
As for movies, you won't want to miss Jake Gyllenhaal's terrifyingly great turn in "Nightcrawler." Also new: "Life of Crime" and "Cake" with Jennifer Aniston; Philip Seymour Hoffman's last completed film, the spy thriller "A Most Wanted Man"; Gina Prince-Bythewood's acclaimed film "Beyond the Lights" starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a rising singer; not to mention the critically panned "Grace of Monaco," starring Nicole Kidman as Princess Grace.

Following his success in the wonderfully wacky British TV series Spaced, Simon Pegg’s leap to the big screen has seen him catapulted into mega-franchises like Star Trek and Mission: Impossible (and possibly even Star Wars). One step of that journey involved dabbling in a few rom-coms which landed with mixed results (Run Fatboy Run, Hector and the Search For Happiness). While he’s switching up the material for the forthcoming assassin comedy Kill Me Three Times, which is getting a Us release next month, he hasn’t quite abandoned the romance oeuvre just yet.
In Man Up, Pegg joins Lake Bell as a couple who inadvertently share a romantic evening together. His hopeless singleton initiates a date with a prospective partner he recently met online. In a twist of incident, however, as is often the case in the world of rom-com matchmaking, he doesn’t meet who he’s...

Apart from acquitting himself well in the romantic scenes in Edgar Wright films, the perpetually charming Simon Pegg doesn't have a great track record with respect to romantic comedies (see the dreadful “Hector And The Search For Happiness”), yet that could change with “Man Up,” a British romcom produced by Nira Park, Wright’s longtime producer. The script is written by Tess Morris and was featured on the 2011 Brit List, which bodes well. Starring Pegg and Lake Bell, the film centers around a chaotic first date between a recent divorcee and a disillusioned singleton involving lost divorce papers, a stalker and some competitive indoor sport. You can probably guess who plays who. A StudioCanal chief called the film a “big UK, feelgood rom-com." The official synopsis: Nancy (Lake Bell), is done with dating. 10 times bitten, 100 times shy, she’s exhausted by the circus. So when Jack (Simon Pegg) blindly mistakes her for his.

Given the genre cred of Simon Pegg and the ascendance of Rosamund Pike, I approached Hector and the Search for Happiness with a certain level of curiosity. I was unfamiliar with the original novel by French author Francois Lelord and somehow missed the film’s release back in September. 20th Century Home Entertainment resolved that with the release today of the film on DVD.
In short, the film is about a psychiatrist, Hector (Pegg), who wants to shake up his tedious life. He doesn’t feel like he’s good at his job or able to help people, and laments to his girlfriend Clara (Pike) that he has yet to sample the very experience he recommends to his clients. As a result, he goes walkabout, seeking to taste life and find happiness. Then things happen.
It’s a charming premise and certainly well-trod territory but one expects, well, more from the story,...

Werner Herzog is jumping right back in the narrative-feature saddle for his next film, a romantic thriller called "Salt and Fire" set amid a global catastrophe. Screen Daily has the scoop: Veronica Ferres ("Hector and the Search for Happiness") plays a scientist up against the head of a major corporation responsible for an ecological disaster in South America. When warnings of a remote supervolcano bode global doom, they must team up to save the world—in spite of their ideological differences. Herzog penned the script and will produce alongside "Queen of the Desert" cohort Michael Benaroya, and Nina Maag of Construction Film and Pablo Cruz of Canana Films. The producers plan to shoot "Salt and Fire," currently heating up sales interest for International Film Trust, beginning April 2015 on the Bolivian salt flats, as Herzogian as any a vast landscape. Herzog visited a volcano in 1977 for his early documentary "La Soufrière,...

Being Werner Herzog's travel agent must be one of the most interesting jobs around. His documentaries and features have taken him around the world from the urban jungle of New Orleans to the very real jungle of Guyana, from deserts to the swampy interiors of South America to caves in France and the icy expanse of Antarctica. By this point, Herzog's Air Miles plan can probably buy him a few trips around the world. And it looks like his next adventure will take him to the edges of volcanoes. Upon the premiere of his latest feature "Queen Of The Desert" (review here) at the Berlin International Film Festival, word has emerged about Herzog's next couple of projects. In April, Herzog will head to the Bolivian salt flats to shoot the film "Salt And Fire." Screen Daily reports that Veronica Ferres ("Klimt," "Hector And The Search For Happiness") will star...

Taking a break from his signature documentaries for a while, Werner Herzog has just wrapped his Gertrude Bell biopic Queen Of The Desert, and will continue in narrative feature mode for his next project. He'll direct Salt And Fire, a volcanic thriller starring German actress Veronica Ferres (Klimt, Hector And The Search For Happiness). The story, according to available sources, will involve drama and romance in South America, where scientist Ferres butts heads with the head of a corporation responsible for an ecological disaster. Starred Up Starred Up didn't make my top ten of 2014, but it was undoubtedly one of the better movies of last year and the best movie starring Jack O'Connell who is likely to get another career boost soon with '71 as Unbroken clearly didn't make his name known to the masses. I definitely recommend you search this one out, just too bad it looks like it is only getting a DVD release.
John Wick Solid little actioner and a perfect movie to watch at home. I'm not sure you need to buy it, but definitely give it a rent.

Ender's Game star Asa Butterfield has signed on to star in the sci-fi adventure Out of This World for Relativity Media. Relativity Studios is behind the project, which has Peter Chelsom (Hector and the Search for Happiness) set to direct. The story begins with a billionaire entrepreneur's mission to colonize Mars, which results in a female astronaut becoming pregnant on the planet.
The astronaut died during childbirth, but her infant son was raised in secrecy on Mars. 16 years later, after returning to Earth, the teenage boy (Asa Butterfield) enlists the help of a mission specialist and connects with a young woman he has been communicating with. They both set off on a road trip across America to find the father he never knew.
Allan Loeb (21, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, The Dilemma) wrote the original screenplay, with Peter Chelsom and Tinker Lindsay (Hector and the Search for Happiness) providing the most recent revisions.

Currently making the transition from child actor to teen actor – presumably with the hopes of becoming a fully-realised adult actor – Asa Butterfield has another project to assist on his career path. Per THR, the Hugo star has now bagged the lead role in Relativity’s sci-fi effort, Out Of This World.
The rising star will be directed by Peter Chelsom (Hector and the Search for Happiness), who himself will be working from revisions he and Tinker Linsday made to Allan Loeb’s (Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps) original script. As the film is in the early stages, Butterfield is the only cast member confirmed. He will be playing a young teen who discovers that the opportunity to know his real father may still be in his grasp.

More often that not, Simon Pegg’s cheeky antics have either been centre stage in intimate genre pics (Shaun Of The Dead, The World’s End) or supporting turns in major blockbusters (Mission: Impossible, Star Trek). Aside from the comedy misfire Hector And The Search For Happiness, his starring turns have remained low-key. That could all be about to change, however, with the advent of director Kriv Stenders’ black comedy, Kill Me Three Times.
