When director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening was released back in June, co-writer and star Dewayne Perkins told Variety that he envisioned the film being the start of a franchise, one that could bring back the “same group, sprinkle in some new people. I feel like we’ve got something good, and I love the dynamic, but fresh blood always turns things up a little bit.” Now Variety has confirmed that a sequel to The Blackening is officially in development!
The Blackening didn’t exactly set the box office of fire, earning just $18.5 million… but since the movie had a budget of $3 million (plus another $2 million for marketing), that’s enough for producer MRC and domestic distributor Lionsgate to feel that it’s worth going back to for a sequel. They’re developing the follow-up with Perkins, co-writer Tracy Oliver, and producer E. Brian Dobbins.

The action-thriller Megalodon: The Frenzy is a film directed by Brendan Petrizzo. The cast includes Caroline Williams, Eric Roberts, Jessica Chancellor, and others who have helped in the proper execution of the film. After sustaining damage, the naval ships U.S.S. King and U.S.S. Fragasso manage to protect Cratus, a research submarine and help it escape. The movie seems to have drawn inspiration from films like The Meg, Jaws, Open Water. Shark Night, and others. Replete with thrills and action, the movie is bound to keep the audience glued to their seats till the end. Will the Cratus be able to manage its way past the lurking dangers under the depths of the ocean? Let us find out!

Samuel L. Jackson fought to keep the 'Snakes on a Plane' film title from being changed. The actor starred in the 2006 action horror which features passengers fighting a horde of venomous villains which had been placed on the aircraft by a gang boss in an attempt to cause a crash - and he's now revealed studio bosses wanted to give the film a more generic name to keep the snakes a secret but he wasn't happy about it. Speaking to Vulture, the 74-year-old actor explained he was excited about signing on for the movie because of the title, saying: "When I heard about 'Snakes on a Plane', I had just done 'Formula 51' with the director [Ronny Yu]. So I called him, was like: 'Are you going to do a movie called 'Snakes on a Plane'? Is it what I think it is?...

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws left an indelible mark on cinema upon release in 1975, ushering in the summer blockbuster as we know it. Like its many taglines, Jaws also made people afraid to go into the water thanks to a newfound fear of man-eating sharks. And the film’s massive box office success created a tsunami of copycats, launching the “sharksploitation” subgenre.
But emulating Jaws only goes so far, and the subgenre has been forced to constantly find inventive new ways to reimagine the shark horror movie. One surefire but cheeky way to stand out from an increasingly crowded subgenre is to add novelty to the concept, often by altering the setting. If people are too afraid to go into the water, the shark should go to the people.
Luckily, there’s no shortage of weird, wacky settings that dramatically alter the formula…

Ever since the 1975 horror blockbuster Jaws made us afraid to go into the water, America has had an obsession with sharks. While great whites get most of the attention, any aquatic killer with sharp teeth will usually quench our collective thirst for marine menace. In 1988, Discovery Channel launched Shark Week, a seven day block of programming filled with nature documentaries, celebrity cameos, and aquatic reality TV designed to explore the wide world of sharks. This annual event has been going strong for the past 35 years, working its way into the public consciousness to become a household name. Each summer’s horror offerings usually bring with it one or more films of the Shark Horror subgenre. Featuring the underwater predators as their villains, these movies vary widely in quality and usually sink or swim based on the verisimilitude of their special effects.

A series premiere, a long-awaited season return and a bevy of great movies are new on HBO and HBO Max this month. May 1 marks the series debut of “White House Plumbers,” the new limited series from “Veep” showrunner David Mandel that chronicles the Watergate break-in and fallout. That show airs on HBO and will stream on HBO Max. Then on May 4, the comedy “The Other Two” returns for its third season on HBO Max.
The sixth season of the animated series “Rick and Morty” will be available to stream on HBO Max starting on May 11, and in terms of library titles the “Men in Black” trilogy, the comedies “Step Brothers” and “Some Like It Hot” and Jonah Hill’s directorial debut “Mid90s” all come to HBO and HBO Max this month.

Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.
The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!

HBO Max will officially be replaced by Warner Bros. Discovery on May 23 with a new and improved service called Max. However, that doesn’t mean the service is scrimping on content until then. One of the biggest new releases of the month is the new limited series “White House Plumbers,” which will premiere on May 1. Starring Woody Harrelson as E. Howard Hunt and Justin Theroux as G. Gordon Liddy, the pair portray two real-life Watergate burglars and Nixon saboteurs who ended up destroying the very president they desperately wanted to serve.
Check out the “White House Plumbers” trailer:
The platform will head to the pitch on May 16 with a three-part soccer docuseries “Angel City.” The series goes behind the scenes with the groundbreaking Los Angeles-based professional women’s soccer team, Angel City Football Club. It reveals the origin story through the 2022 inaugural season of the female-founded and led team — including owners and investors Uzo Aduba,...

Christine Quinn, best known as the drama-stirring real estate agent on the first five seasons of Netflix’s Selling Sunset, bid adieu to the reality series last year. When THR caught up with her recently in West Hollywood at a party to celebrate her stylist Maeve Reilly’s BCBGMaxAzria collaboration, Quinn said the exit freed her up to return to her roots.
“I’m acting on a show right now,” teased Quinn, declining to offer up the project’s title. “I started out acting in scripted and I really wanted to get back into it.”
She even name-checked a certain A-lister whose career she wants to emulate. “I’m not saying I am Lady Gaga but the fact that she can do these really big roles and pull it off, whether it’s American Horror Story or A Star is Born, I want to do things like that,” continued Quinn...

One has to imagine that conceptualizing a shark attack scene must be relatively easy. There’s a reason that these animals have become such evergreen villains in nature thrillers, and the basic cinematic architecture of an attack scene hasn’t changed all that much since “Jaws.” But the scariest part of a shark attack is the element of surprise, and for that to work, a shark film faces its toughest challenge: thinking of something for its potential chum to do in the moments when a shark is not attacking them.
This is a challenge that is poorly met by Martin Wilson’s “Great White,” a paint-by-numbers shark survival slog which strands five people on an inflatable life raft besieged by a hungry fish. Though boasting a few adequate action sequences, and foregoing the more gonzo schlockiness of peer projects like “The Meg” and “Shark Night,” the film’s human characters make for drab company,...

Since Steven Spielberg formed the summer blockbuster and scared the bejesus out of crowds with Jaws back in 1975, it is fair to say that shark cinema has exponentially grown in number. Some offerings sinking into the murky depths of ineptitude but others have struck with such razor-toothed ferocity that they have found themselves ranked highly in this crowded finned sub-genre of nature attacks filmmaking. In fact, of late, there have been some very impressive offerings like Jaume Collet-Serra’s The Shallows, Johannes Roberts’ 47 Meters Down, and the underrated Deep Blue Sea 3 and found footage spin Cage Dive. Sadly Martin Wilson’s Great White does not quite raise to those higher tides but still has some thrashing thrills on offer.

“Aqua Horror,” specifically shark cinema, continues to surface title upon title after a sunken period. Between The Shallows, The Meg, and lesser-budgeted splashes such as Johannes Roberts’ 47 Meters Down, fin flicks have surged back into summer’s movie night focus. 47 Meters Down isn’t the biggest fish of those three, but impresses based on Roberts’ subversion of expectations by hooking razor-sharp psychological tortures on a line bated with catastrophic cage diving. You’d probably assume 47 Meters Down: Uncaged to be more of the same, correct? Follow formula, scare audiences, cash check?

The journey to the big screen for The Meg, adapted from the 1997 Steve Alten novel, has been a rather long gestating one, as this project has been in development since the late ‘90s. No doubt the vision for the film has undergone a number of changes over the course of this period but this summer The Meg is here and nearly 45 years on from Steven Spielberg creating the summer blockbuster as we know it with Jaws, it is refreshing to see giant sharks back in midst of the summer season.

As Renny Harlin’s Deep Blue Sea continues to be eulogized as B-grade, feeding-frenzy excellence (now and forever), Darin Scott’s Deep Blue Sea 2 will be forgotten, ignored and seen only as malodorous sequel chum. How *dare* drug-doped supersharks be associated with such a nonsensically rudderless dive, as submerged survival “fun” is drained well before the dam breaks wide open. Restrained budgets are one thing, but a three-person writing team’s concocted solution around big-budget finback effects is a middle-finger to Harlin’s masterful underwater massacre (in comparison). Hell, even Shark Night 3D looks infallible next to this Open Water 3: Cage Dive of a franchise torpedo.

Filmmaker Jonathan N Dixon took some time off after his last film, the 2011 horror-thriller Wrath, to spend more time with his daughter.
He moved to Noosa and took up surfing after a long absence from the waves, and slowly but surely a new film idea began to seed.
"Everybody I went surfing with knew my background in film and TV and would always talk to me about sharks", Dixon told If.
"Only a year ago, a seven-foot tiger shark hung around for a couple of days. We all got out of the water, but what did we do the next day? Get back in. We take that chance all the time because of a passion for surfing".
"A surfer-and-shark movie has never been done, probably because of the difficulty - because it's a bastard to shoot when you're on the water!" (laughs)

Ever since Steven Spielberg's Jaws redefined the blockbuster back in the summer of 1975, sharks have been a big screen mainstay, terrifying film fans and spawning a horror sub-genre that's usually thrifty in budget but big on ludicrousness.
As Jaws celebrates its 40th birthday today (June 20), take a dive into B-movie heaven and fish out some of cinema's craziest shark-based cinema offerings.
1. Deep Blue Sea (1999)
A Jaws movie in all but name, this souped-up action-horror from Renny Harlin boasts a bigger budget than every other film on this list combined, but a script that rivals them all for hilarity.
The setup? A group of scientists in an underwater research base conduct experiments on sharks in a bid to find a cure for Alzheimer's. Boasting a cast that includes everyone from Thomas Jane to Samuel L Jackson (with LL Cool J as a parrot-loving chef), this is big and dumb - but most importantly,...

As Jaws once cleared tourist-filled beaches thanks to a Great White threat, Backcountry is certain to make outdoorsy adventurers re-think their next wilderness excursion. Yes, Backcountry is the camping equivalent to Jaws, turning a natural woodland predator into a horrific killing machine with more ferocity than the wildest creatures Hollywood has ever dreamed up.
While bear encounters probably don’t turn into a survivalist’s nightmare all that often, filmmaker Adam MacDonald channels every camper’s worst-case-scenario into a gritty, gory, tremendously tense vacation-from-hell genre experiment that puts animal attack movies back on the map. I assumed no bear-centric horror movie would top the opening scene of André Szöts’ never-completed Grizzly 2: The Predator (George Clooney, Laura Dern, Charlie Sheen – tell me you’ve seen this??), but Backcountry asserts its dominance by once again reminding humanity that Mother Nature’s untamed domain can never be accounted for – a primal realization...

What happens when a one night stand lasts a bit longer than you were expecting? That's the simple idea behind the upcoming comedy "#Stuck," which, as the title implies, finds two people in each other's space for well beyond what they had intended. The partially crowdfunded movie was written and directed by Stuart Acher, stars Joel David Moore ("Avatar," "Shark Night 3D") and Madeline Zima ("Californication," "Breaking The Girls"), and follows a couple whose one evening of passion comes to a grinding halt the next day, when they get stuck in traffic. And as you'll see below in this exclusive clip, it's a scenario that causes the tension to rise between the pair, while right after that, a new Red Band trailer sets the mood for the entire comedy. "#Stuck" opens in theaters and on VOD on October 10th. Watch below.

A slow Summer at the domestic box office came to a quiet end this weekend.Guardians of the Galaxy held on to first place, while the two newcomers (As Above/So Below, The November Man fell short of $10 million.Over the three-day weekend, the Top 12 earned $88.2 million, which makes this the second-worst weekend of the year so far. Guardians of the Galaxy added $17.1 million, which ranks eighth all-time among fifth weekends. It was off just one percent from last weekend, which is a great Labor Day hold; that's even better than last year's Lee Daniels' The Butler and We're the Millers (down 10 percent and 3 percent, respectively). Over the long weekend, Guardians earned $22.9 million, which ranks third all-time among Labor Day weekends.Including Labor Day, the 10th movie from Marvel Studios has now earned $281.2 million at the domestic box office. Against two weak newcomers, Guardians of the Galaxy held on to first place at the box office on Friday.More importantly, Guardians passed Captain America: The Winter Soldier to become the highest-grossing movie of the year at the domestic box office with $262.1 million.Guardians added $3.8 million on Friday, which is down just 20 percent from last weekend. That puts it on pace for around $16 million for the three-day frame and over $20 million for the four-day holiday weekend. In the long run, Guardians is now guaranteed to earn over $300 million, and could finish as high as $320 million. As Above/So Below took second place on Friday with $3.2 million. That's a bit higher than recent Labor Day horror movies Apollo 18 and Shark Night 3D, though that's not saying much. It should earn between $9 and $10 million for the three-day weekend and over $11 million through Monday.Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fell 41 percent to $2.7 million,...

I have what one might call a complicated relationship with Chiller original programming, especially movies. The main issue is, I want to like them, since the eventual Blu-ray release will most definitely be released by Shout!/Scream, but in most cases, I don’t. In all honesty, despite its shortcomings, Beneath has been the first Chiller original movie that I have found any sort of enjoyment in. That’s not to say that it is a great movie, because it is not. It still very much retains that “Made-for-tv” feel. That is to say, it looks cheap, and for the most part, especially as far as the acting is concerned, you definitely “get what you pay for”, so to speak. Still, I found myself wanting to continue watching, where as in past releases, like Remains or Dead Souls, I just couldn’t even power through to the end without pausing...

Veteran horror contributor and all-around cool guy Larry Fessenden has a lot of acting, directing and producing credits to his name. But he's never worked with anything quite like he did on Beneath. Fessenden recently sat down with Dread Central to talk about his new film.
First he gave us a brief synopsis of what viewers can expect when they hitch their anchor to Beneath. "It's a stylish little horror film about six teenagers stuck in a rowboat with a malevolent force under the water trying to get them," Fessenden said.
"It's a movie about the decisions they make to get out of the dilemma, and they're not all pretty decisions."
Indeed the film, which at first glance appears to be a monster movie, certainly has other, more devious intentions for viewers as they get deeper into the story and the characters become much less friendly with each other. "I'm...

Young Master Wayne and Selina Kyle, Aka Catwoman, have been chosen for Fox’s Batman prequel, Gotham. David Mazouz will play the tragedy-stricken Bruce, shortly after the murder of his parents and now under the care of Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee). Mazouz is best known for his role in Fox’s short-lived, Ascap Award-winning sci-fi series Touch alongside Keifer Sutherland and Danny Glover. That show managed two seasons before being cancelled. Portraying pre-Catwoman Selina will be Camren Bicondova, a relative newcomer to Hollywood, whose major claim to fame is being a runner-up on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew with her group, 8 Flavahs. She has also appeared in small roles in the horror flick Girlhouse and Cinedigm’s dance drama Battlefield America. Bicondova’s role as Selina will be as another orphaned teenager, well on her way to master thief as an expert pickpocket living on the streets of Gotham. With...

We recently reported that Silent Night, Deadly Night was coming back to theaters just in time for Christmas, but Silent Night is making a return to theaters as well. Directed by Steven C. Miller, Silent Night is a loose remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night and was originally released around this time last year:
“A loose remake of the horror classic Silent Night, Deadly Night, the film’s stellar cast includes Malcolm McDowell (Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Easy A), Jaime King (Sin City, My Bloody Valentine 3D), Donal Logue (Shark Night 3D, Blade), Lisa Marie (Sleepy Hollow), Brendan Fehr (Final Destination, X-Men First Class), and Ellen Wong (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World).
McDowell and King star as a small-town sheriff and deputy on the hunt for a murderous Santa Claus terrorizing their community on Christmas Eve. But with the streets full of Santas for the annual Christmas parade, the killer is hiding in plain sight.

Us film producer Relativity is to use data gathered from its hit films, such as Mirror Mirror and Shark Night 3D, to move into scripted TV, in what chief executive Ryan Kavanaugh described as a “Moneyball approach to creating television”.
The company is developing two projects based on its existing film properties – Limitless and Act Of Valor – but aims to adapt five or six of its movies to series.
Limitless, an action thriller about an unsuccessful writer who discovers a ‘smart’ drug that allows him to become a perfect version of himself, starred Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro. A small-screen adaptation will be exec produced by Cooper for National Geographic.
Act Of Valor, which follows operatives tasked with the recovery and medical treatment of personnel in humanitarian and combat environments, is another Nat Geo commission. Both shows are likely to be sold through newly launched international film sales division Relativity Foreign.

New Year's Eve has a popular setting at the movies, providing the backdrop for romance, drama, comedy, horror and more. There is something about ringing in the New Year that raises the stakes and sets the tone for life changing events, and it's against this setting that "Liars All," the feature debut of writer/director Brian Brightly plays out. Starring genre fave Sara Paxton ("The Innkeepers," "Shark Night 3D," "Last House On The Left") and "90210" stars Matt Lanter and Gillian Zinser, the thriller follows a group of young people who start playing a dangerous game on New Year's Eve that winds up with someone dead, and a killer on the loose. In this exclusive clip, we see the opening stages of the game and how just a slight bit of peer pressure already starts to push things into uncomfortable territory. "Liars All" will be available on demand starting June 21st.

Three horror vets join Alfonso Gomez-Rejon's remake of the 1976 slasher film The Town That Dreaded Sundown. The film is based on the true story of a serial killer that stalked a small Texas town in 1946. At least five people were killed and the perpetrator was never caught. Addison Timlin (Derailed, Zero Hour) has already been cast as the headliner. Joining her are Veronica Cartwright, Gary Cole, and Joshua Leonard.
Cartwright will play Timlin's grandmother, who raises her after her parents are killed in a car accident. In a career spanning over 50 years, Cartwright has had many roles in genre films, including The Birds, Alien, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Candyman: Farewell to Flesh.
Cole will play a deputy who is chasing the hooded killer. Cole is probably best known for his role in Office Space, but to me, he will always be Lucas Buck from American Gothic.

Why David Ellis? Hmad midnight screening programmer Brian Collins explains:

Even though she's been acting since the age of eight, most moviegoers only began to discover actress Sara Paxton in the mid-'00s when she starred on the show "Darcy's Wild Life" and in 'tween comedies like Aquamarine and Sydney White . She then transitioned into horror with roles in movies like Shark Night 3D and The Last House on the Left , but appearing in Ti West's lower budget 2010 flick The Innkeepers really put Paxton on the map as someone who could do great character work without relying on big gimmicks. Maybe that's why Paxton is back at South by Southwest for the second time, having previously been here two years ago with The Innkeepers .
