  • This film is gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous. It has some of the best animation and music I have ever witnessed. The physics-defying scenery, parkour races and flashbacks create a very colourful and dynamic atmosphere.

However, it barely had any story. The characters are just stand-ins for typical anime tropes, the romance is forced and there seems to be no overall "point". The entire plot could be described in two sentences without any loss of detail.
  • This latest Netflix original anime by WIT Studio, having ensemble big names involved is brilliant with regards to its animation, however felt short in terms of storyline.

Tetsuro Araki, the renowed director behing Shingeki no Kyojin directs this dystopain sci-fi version of 'A Littler mermaid'. The characters felt a little underdeveloped, given the screentime of mere 100 minutes. While the movie bears influences of the classic fairy tale, they are rather loose, and at some parts, do seem to be shoehorned into the plot.

The animated feature, helmed by Studio WIT, is a breathtaking sight to behold, with its striking, vibrant colours breathing life into the desolated, forgotten city of Tokyo. The visual design also changes nicely to reflect the atmosphere of specific scenarios: action scenes get louder, bolder hues, domestic moments feature softer lighting, and intense sequences welcome ominous, darker colour mixing. Meanwhile, the landscape boasts details that allude to real-world Tokyo, such as Animate stores, Japanese ferries, and the star of the show, the Tokyo Tower.

The soundtrack gets a mention as well, as it was unique and melodious in its own way. The cinematography was amazing, capturing the parkour sport effectively. It's unfortunate that Bubble couldn't reach its narrative potential, because it excels everywhere else.

At the core of it, Bubble is a visually-gripping anime movie that presents an innovative and interesting premise, but couldn't deliver the best to its potential. I would recommend Bubble for a one time watch, due to its outstanding animation and cinematography

    My Rating : 7/10.
  • Warning: Spoilers
80% of the Movie is not even about the main plot or explaining what is happening with the bubbles. Well if it's not about that then it must be about the character development right? I don't mind slice of life type, but No, barely any Character development . At one point it feels like a male fantasy story, doing super cool looking Parkour and having a girl that will die for you. The only development the MC make is talking about his past to a girl that can't even speak properly. Why did he do it? Who knows? He just start sharing his past. So the main thing here is Parkour, beautiful storyboardS, and the animation team is on point. Okay, but why do they do Parkour? Not only that but they risk their lives running through collapsing buildings. Must be something really serious to risk your life like that right? Like food? Like territory? Or something? No nothing just for fun and some snack and cola. Because only Tokyo is affected so if they need food that bad they probably won't live there. So they don't do it for survivor reasons then what is the reason? They literally kidnap a girl to challenge another team for Parkou. And no one thinks it's a big deal. They just see her on there and think let Parkou, Idk maybe Parkou, and send some people on the side to save her the same time and not let her hang there. Not the other team has guard or anything. And for the last time, why do they doing all this? Yeah for view and male fantasy about doing cool Parkour and saving a girl. Uta is cute and cool and good at Parkour. Maybe I'm the one being shallow but in the end, j love the animation and hate the story. Waste of talented animator and cool environment.

Animation in this is something out of this world, the colors are beautiful. Everything about animation was amazing. I am so sad that story is mess and charachters are not developed or special in any way.
  • Warning: Spoilers
A lot of great talents joined this prodution, the soundtrack made by Hiroyuki Sawano is another master piece, as the background art made by Bihou's studio and the animation made by WIT studio.

The animation is very fluid, the pakour scenes are great, although sometimes the 3D objects on the background contrast too much with the 2D characters, which feels "un-natural" sometimes. Despise that ,it's a production where they really put a lot of effort and money, just it's really a pity they forgot to hire a good writer. Gen Urobuchi (the writer) did a good job on Puella Magi Madoka and Fate, but other scripts written by him really lacks quality (Goodzilla: Planet of the Monsters / City on the Edge of Battle / The Planet Eater were really awful movies) . It's sad to see a lot of money spent on great artists and they forget about the main role: the writer, the one who will write the story! There are so many good japanese writers, why chose the guy who didn't make a single good piece of work for the past 5 years? Why chose the guy who made that boring godzilla movies? (I still can't believe they made all the 2 sequels of that crap, lately studios really like to throw a lot of money on bad stories)

About the story (warning, spoilers ahead), is the standard type: 1.an anomaly happens (the world gets filled with bubbles with gravity getting crazy in some places, with Tokyo being the main city to suffer from this anomaly) 2. You have a non-sense opening animation as if it was a weekly TV show (why so many anime movies places an opening animation like if you were about to see a weekly TV show inside a movie that starts slow as this one?? It kind breaks the whole atmosphere from the introduction, and on this movie, the first scenes are slow peace, preparing the viewer for something deep and emotional that is about to begin) 3. Main character is saved by mysterious girl 4.main character falls in love with mysterious girl but she needs to go away to stop the anomaly 4.main character tries to save and bring back mysterious girl, but it all leads to an end questioning the existence of the universe itself (??? I wonder why so many Japanese movies tries to lead their stories into this non-sense philosophical questioning, which always leaves a dry taste on the mouth of who is watching the story).

In general, the movie lacks of good dialogues and chemistry between the characters. You see a lot of cool pakour scenes, but most of characters don't have good screen time or are just wasted in situations where it's difficult to make a bond with any of them and feel any joy or sadness from characters during the movie. When the mc meets the girl, she doesn't speak any words, but after a few days she is already speaking, and even with she talking, you don't see any good dialogue between her and the mc. The movie itself already spoils that is going to be a sad ending, but the lack of chemistry between the mc and the girl didn't lead to a single tear in the end.

Going about details, I couldn't see any reason for the pakour in the movie, as the movie explained that only Tokyo got collapsed with the bubbles, around it people where living their lives normal, and anyone could enter or leave the bubble that was surrounding Tokyo, so it wasn't a madmax post-apocalyptic world where people would have to compete in mortal games for food under their own savage lawns. On the mysterious girl, for some reasons that aren't explained, the girl starts to lose her body parts when she touches the mc, but this doesn't happen when she touches other people (why just him?). And It's so cold the relationship with her and other people around that there is a part of the movie where she loses her arm and no one asks about it!! (she lost her arm and the mc doesn't give a thing(!!) and he also goes confess his love to her, ignoring her condition, as well other characters when they see her). The scientist woman who took care of her at first time, don't even ask about part of her hand being infested with some bubbles, the scientist only gives her a glove (they really don't make good scientists as old days, no one questions anything, just an useless character as most of characters on this movie). The mystery of the bubbles also ends without any explanation, you only see a shadow of what would be the mysterious girl's sister, but no explanation of why they came to earth, where they came from, why the mysterious girl have to go back (she only receives a vision that really felt like the eye of Sauron from the Lord of the Rings, as the shadow of her sister lol) and why they messed the whole planet with bubbles(JJ Ambrams feelings here: "mystery box" that starts with a lot of questions and it all ends in an immensity of nothing, just pure wasted time). And I also want to point to the irony of the mc going to rescue the girl, by "rescuing" her it ends that he is the one who finishes killing her as she starts to melt down into bubbles because he touched her, and seems he didn't notice it even after she dies.(to see how much brainless the main character was, as for the other characters as well)

Overall, 10 for the animation art and music, 5 for the story, direction and world building.
  • Visually stunning from start to finish. They made sure that even if most people don't like this film, the animation will make everyone captivated. The plot is just a post-apocalyptic Little Mermaid from the opposite perspective which they remind us again and again in an attempt to make sure no one, I mean absolutely no one misses the reasoning behind their choices. Even with such attention to detail in animation and sound effects, the film manages to be bland a lot. Despite its blandness, they did manage to make the animation itself work in the narrative a lot to make it worthwhile too. It's really a mixed bag where if you like the animation you may like it.
  • Bubble feels way too derivative from far better told anime stories. It seems oddly random the mix of Parkour with the little mermaid tale using a post-apocalyptic-ish Tokyo, definitely it was what stuck to the wall and the creators just scrapped the very bottom to come up with something.

The visuals are good, the dynamic action set pieces are jaw dropping at some points but the action alone it's no a redeeming quality for a movie that had lots of potential wasted in a nonsensical story that has been told way too many times and barely becomes interesting. Paper thin and stereotypical characters, non-developed background stories, logic that just don't make sense(even in its own universe), and a resolution that was predictable within the first 5 minutes makes Bubble a disappointing experience.
  • One might argue that my rating is way too high, I have to say that the soundtrack and visuals in this movie are stellar! There were also some moments of intense action and just pure awesomeness, I couldn't help but fall in love with the movie. I also really like Uta and Hibiki as characters. They were very special! Definitely worth a rewatch a hundredfold.
  • The graphics, visuals and "choreography" are interesting and fun to watch and keep your attention all the way through, but in the end the story is a letdown. No rhyme, reason, or point to this movie. The characters are semi-interesting but not deeply developed.

This is just basic action / adventure anime with a pseudo-romantic story thrown in. It seems the writers / directors were trying to say something, but it never really comes across as being very important. Basically it's just a fairy tale without a lesson to be learned.

I give it 6 stars for being interesting to watch, but it came very close to receiving a "mediocre 5". But had to give it an extra point for good graphics.
  • It does make up for in visual beauty. I got bored a lot because many things were under-explained. Much of the story needed more depth, as well as character building. The visuals were beautiful, though.
  • This was a beautiful movie. One of the reasons I love anime is because of the beautiful graphics. I loved the design of uta and the setting of having the overgtrown tokyo where kids play parkour was interesting, It was emotional and kept me entertained to the end. What a beautiful film.
  • Coming into 2022, this anime was one of my most anticipated movies. We have the director of Attack on Titan Season 1-3 and Death Note, WIT studio, writer of Fate/Zero, and the composer of Attack on Titan coming together to make this sci-fi action thriller.

Let's get the obvious out of the way. The animation was breathtakingly gorgeous. There was never a boring shot. Every single frame and motion was jaw-droppingly beautiful. WIT studio poured their heart out to make this masterpiece of animation. Just like in other anime from WIT like Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song, the close-up animation of character's face was distinctly angelic. Those moments were special, and I'm still in awe.

However, sadly the story did not deserve such godlike animation. There's a blend of Little Mermaid, spiral, bubbles, and parkour. Unfortunately these elements did not work out very well. The first half of the movie felt like it was going nowhere. The characters were mostly uninteresting, which made the emotional scenes less impactful. The encompassing theme of this movie just did not land.

Overall, I don't think it's bad, as I still had a good time, but with this much power dedicated to make this supposedly masterpiece, Bubble was still a disappointment. 7-7.5/10.

To be honest, for most part of the movie, I didn't even understand what was happening but I was still latched on to the screen because it was that interesting to watch. The visuals and cinematography were amazing too. Watch it in the highest resolution possible for maximum enjoyment. It's not a ground breaking movie, but it was pretty good. For casual watching, this can be on top of your lists! It was mesmerizing. Unlike some of the reviews here which say animation was bad, it was the opposite for me. It was only the animation which kept me hooked to the screen else I might have dropped it pretty soon. This however doesn't mean the storyline was utter trash, it was okay but I expected a much better storyline though. Overall, it's pretty fun for a one time watch!! Not to mention the bgm was pretty nice too, indeed it will be as it was made by the G. O. A. T Hiroyuki Sawano who has worked on many successful projects. WIT studio also did an amazing job at animating this.
  • The animation is nice and the parkour scenes, while not instructive or realistic in any way, are fluid and nicely done. However the characters and the plot are so derivative!! And not of The Little Mermaid, which a character has to read and then incessantly quote from, just in case we're really dumb and don't get it, but of every Japanese anime ever. Lovely innocent child-like magical girl? Check. Kind, shy, weird and skillful boy? Check. Group of diverse (in the Japanese way) nakamas that will help the hero reach the goal? Check. Magical unexplained phenomena that people treat by leaving and eventually using it as a parkour course where no one seems to actually die? Check. Old mentor-san to guide the energy of youth? Check. Overly cautious (which in this case would have been reasonable) adult woman to contrast the power of youthful feeling? Check. World changing events that somehow have to have the main characters as the main cause and center? Check.

Bottom line: felt like a money grab, rather than an anime. Not that anime is not made for money, and not like most of them are not utterly crap, but it was like a toilet scrubber made of gold. So much potential wasted on an opaque and pointless story.
  • Tldr: it's a flawed story with likable characters, a lot of cool yet mostly unexplored ideas, top tier animation and an amazing soundtrack. By no means a must watch, but still worth watching if you're interested in the concepts or want some top notch parkour animation.

    ********************************************************************

For the lack of a better word, this movie was lacking.

But why? The concept is great, the music is amazing, the animation is some of the best out there and the writing while not the best of the best, it is also far from being bad.

So why? What could possibly be the reason...

    ********************************************************************

Loosely based on little mermaid. A well known story, that even if you somehow don't know it, you will since the movie tells it, and says how it ends not too far into the first act, and to me, that's this movie's biggest downfall. Basing your main plot around a well known story, means audience having a good idea of what the story beholds from the start, which obviously is not the best thing, specially when you say how it ends and make sure the few who don't know it are also spoiled.

But unlike what you may think, that's not always a bad move ,while that type of story in most cases is not as good or at least not as interesting as a truly original idea, it can and has worked before in many cases. But for that to happen you need a little something called, "reasons"

if those reasons aren't present, you are just actively spoiling your story for no, well, "reason". And to no ones surprise, all spoilers do, is lessening the impact. And ruining the shock factor.

    Again, it can work.

You can use the known story, to set up a twist by breaking the audiences expectation.

You can expand upon the idea and add to it.

Or you can even just remake it in a different setting, but in that case telling the audience what you are based on from the start becomes a moronic move.

The problem with bubble is that other than the elements mirroring the little mermaid story, it doesn't expand on ANYTHING.

*********************************** Out of context spoilers for this part:

Where did the bubble came from? Who knows.

Why had the time stopped in the tower? Who knows.

Why was the girls sister which was the other part of these "bubble" angry when she left? Who knows.

Where did the bubble go? "yOu sEe thErE arE tHeSe vorTex"

no that is not an explanation. That's cop out answer/theming at best. At the very least the movie could have it match the themes of the show like what parasyte The maxim did.

    ********************************************************************

The show had a lot of ideas, but it didn't even attempt to go through any of them outside of the bare minimum. I just don't get it, if all you had to offer in terms of story was the little mermaid story, why would you even think of telling that to the audience DIRECTLY.

And I do mean that, the romance barely functioned since it was kind of rushed, and the characters where just ok. Nothing bad, but in no way special either. There is no message, there is no symbolism, there is no clever foreshadowing, theming or plot twist.

All the story had, was the little mermaid story and some unexplored ideas, and for some reason decided to spoil a massive part of it by telling you what the story is based on.

It's not all disappointment though. The animation and art are out of this world. The background were also some of the most wall paper worthy I have seen in a long time.

The music was also great. It didn't blow me away and become one of the best I have heard, but It was great through out the whole movie.

But the sad truth is that, this movie felt unfinished. It left a lot to the imagination in the worst way possible.

Wit has never missed the mark as far as I have seen, and this too was by no means a bad movie, but it was certainly disappointing.

    Thanks for reading.

    Warning: Spoilers
Before I start... who is paying these people to leave good reviews? Like, hit me up I want to get in on the action 🤣🤣🤣. Seriously though 😒.

I feel really bad because after like 15 mins I stopped, and started doing something else. I eventually got back to the Movie because like... maybe I was having an off day and maybe it wasn't the movie. But I was wrong. As time went on I could feel the lack of a storyline. However, while watching, it's hard to put that feeling into words. I was confused and ignored the red flags because I thought, "well, maybe they will explain it in the end".

Ok so if you haven't seen the movie yet, this is my best shot of explaining it:

Bubble is about a boy in this city that was one out of many hubs for this alien attack. The aliens have been there for a while, of course, no one knows why or when they will leave so they just adapted. By adapted I mean they left the city. In Tokyo where the main character lives, orphan kids live in the city with help from government researchers who are trying to understand the aliens. Oh, by the way, the aliens are bubbles. Bubbles people can't communicate with. As random as this will sound, there are also vortexes that are like black holes - don't ask me why. Ok for fun these kids basically created a parquet game where the winner wins supplies and food - provided by who - I forgot. One day an alien became a girl. This happened when the main character almost drowned and was saved by the girl alien named Uta. The main character, who is a parquet legend carries her back to their home where he lives like like 5 other guys on his team. Trust me, I didn't make this up. Uta learns to speak and then learns to play parquet. Literally, then something happens and the bubbles started going crazy. The rest of the movie is about trying to save the city from completely being destroyed. One key part is that Uta falls in love with the main character, and learns that if she touches him she starts turning into bubles. Explaining the rest is pointless trust me. Ok.

Ok so here are some things that really confused me or were just pointless:

First Uta - the female co-star, couldn't speak. Then she could speak. Then she studied all these books like she was trying to get into college. Then, out of nowhere, they started referencing The Little Mermaid like they were Platinum Sponsors. I might be the only one, but... I didn't get the hints until after like the 4th Little Mermaid reference. Maybe I didn't get it because this movie was nothing like The Little Mermaid. Far from.

Thinking back about the movie there are so many questions:

Where do these orphans get their food from? Why are they allowed to just roam around that dangerous city? Literally, one of the teams kidnapped the woman adult researcher and made it a game to rescue her. And surprisingly they played the game to rescue her. Btw kidnapping is not cool. Also, I had no clue who the enemy was in the movie. I think the enemy was the deadline hounding the writers for a good storyline - I could be wrong. For next time guys, remember the enemy's gate is down. Literally, I have no clue why the vortexes were there. What was the dark Uta girl about? Did anyone get that part? Why was Uta dying for like 3 full days compared to how quickly her arm disappeared earlier. Btw if you don't notice that a girl you just touched arm disappeared... like I can't trust your judgment as the main character.

But at least we did learn some stuff in the end:

We learned the most important thing. That song that was playing was created by Uta. I swear I wasn't going to be able to sleep until I knew where that song was coming from. Great job on that guys!! Oh about the bubbles - like where did they come from? We didn't learn that. Oh, the vortexes - no didn't learn that. Did the bubbles go away? - naw they didn't. Did the main character get the girl in the end? - Naw he didn't. Did we learn who the real enemy was? - nope not really. Did we get a motive? - not exactly. Did they live happily ever after? - No they are kinda in the same boat at the end. Wait Wait Wait so what was the purpose of this movie? - Exactly.

My Theory on How they Made this Movie:

I have a theory. You know how businesses have to come up with a company slogan. Originally it's a cool idea, and then too many people add in their two cents? I feel this movie started as a really good idea. Then, there was a meeting with everyone involved, including the janitors and people who set up the lights. The Director and Producer said, "throw out all your idea, no idea is too stupid." Roger That!

So someone said we should have vortexes. "Yes, great idea".

I like the Little Mermaid. "Yes, great idea".

I like when people jump off buildings and cool stuff like that. "yes, I love it".

We should kidnap someone. "Awesome keep them coming".

Oh, I saw this movie called The fault in my stars, and Augustus had an amputated leg. "Yes Yes, that is the best idea ever".

Throw in some cool tech gear; Throw in aliens; I like headphones; - dumb ideas just kept coming one after the other.

And then someone said - what if every time you touched someone they turned into bubbles... at this point the room got quiet.

Then the director said, "I promise, even if we completely destroy the storyline, I'll fit in all of your ideas".

    **End of Story**

    In Conclusion:

Overall it was a really bad movie. If you've seen the drama skit the kids of the E Class put on from the Assassination Classroom, it's kinda like that but not good.

It's similar because you get sucked in, but then in the end the auditorium is full of people throwing stuff. You'll say to yourself "What did I just watch"?

I'm not upset but man. I'm disappointed.
  • The story is rather basic, not Bad, i really enjoyed it, but not the kind of story you think about afterwards. What really elevates the story are the characters, which are also rather simple, but so likeable you just want to see them succeed and be happy, and the beautiful animation and soundtrack.
  • Warning: Spoilers
The animation and cinematography of Netflix's Bubble (2022) was absolutely beautiful. The character's parkour movements were beyond satisfying to watch, and the soundtracks of the movie were nice to listen to. But such a picturesque movie cannot save its mediocre writing.

In a story that revolves around only bubble parkour and romance, the writers somehow fk up these two aspects.

The bubble parkour was interesting for the first twenty minutes, but soon the techniques slowly gets overused and now I have to watch them do the same moves for the rest of the hour. Unlike what was portrayed in the trailer, the action itself isn't edge-seat thrilling as expected. The only obstacle in the way of these bubble parkourers is a whirlpool which hardly seems like a threat (the movie never shows what happens @ the beginning) and the chasers who absolutely sucks at the game. So when the protagonist's team wins, it's not exciting.

The characters don't use their surroundings to think of new techniques etc, it's just hop hop on these flying debire. I understand that the movie isn't all an action movie, but if you want to follow a plot-line abt literal bubble parkour, doesn't that...? The parkour scenes isn't bad, but when you watch it, you would probably admire the animation more than the actual plot-line.

As for romance, it felt very rushed and confusing. You never get to understand why the main couple like each other. For almost the entire movie, Uta just acts like a cat, while Hibiki remains as this lonesome emo. While this isn't necessarily bad, the pair's interactions gives off a more sibling-ish/friendship vibe, and you don't really ship them. Like at all. Perhaps the only intimate scene before the two get together was when Uta creepily watches Hibiki sleep (lol) and when Uta sings for Hibiki. When the two do get together, you're like "oh, nice!" but that's it. However, the movie does get more heart-warming near the end, especially when the two plunges down or when Uta slowly dissipates as bubbles. It was very honey-sweet moment but still felt very incomplete.

The characterisation in this movie is just plainly horrible. For the characters that's meant to be in the main-team as Hibiki, they're equally as useless as that one random lobster dude (the one with two minute screen time). Because the main characters (Hibiki and Uta) don't interact with the four guys on the team, we don't get any sort of attachment or care for them at all. When they do show up, all their conversations are robotic, having the one sole purpose of just explaining context to us. The only side character that actually gets loved by the director, for some reason, is Makoto. She gets the most screen time yet she doesn't actually do the parkour??? She just stands there and reacts to certain things, helps Uta sometimes, and acts all cute... I guess. This is only a small scope of the poor characterisation in Bubble (2022) but you get the gist.

The plot-line had an insane ton of potential. But the writers fked it up by not following the elementary rule of 'Show not Tell' and proper characterisation. They somehow made the thrilling plot of parkour bubbles very boring. But despite these flaws, it had perfect animation and some heartfelt moments.

Bubble (2022) was a good movie, but it's definitely not a masterpiece.
  • Warning: Spoilers
I thoughtvthe animation was lovely, despite some moments that looked a lot like an animated gif in a dress game which felt off putting, the music was amazing, I will say that, overall I didn't dig the little mermaid but with parkour in a semi dystopian Tokyo caused by what might be alien bubbles? I'm not sure if it's because I watched it in dub that some plot points might have been missing? The parkour competitive aspect seemed odd and pointless? There was a mention of a food bonus upon winning but again everyone was here by choice?

The rest of the movie was literally the plot of the original little mermaid which they bring up many times.. It felt like it would of been better as a shirt film featuring some of the story, parkour moments and song rather then a feature length film.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Animation level is much better. And such type of anime is very good. Gravity-defying bubbles rain down, cutting off Tokyo from the rest of the world. The city skyline becomes a playground for young people competing in parkour team battles. Hibiki plummets into the sea but is saved by a girl with mysterious powers.
  • Warning: Spoilers
I'll be going into a lot of detail about the movie and not a general overview.

It's a modernized version of "The Little Mermaid" with a post-apocalyptic feel. The animation and visuals are absolutely stunning and beautiful, so your eyes will definitely be satisfied. The music is also amazing and at first glance the climax and setting are impressive. No character is dislikeable and the main character has a solid backstory that moved me quite a bit. However, there were multiple issues that made me think this movie was mediocre at best.

All the characters, even the main character and his love interest, were incredibly bland. Although I did say the main character had a solid backstory, that's about it. He doesn't show an impressive change and even his moments of spotlight didn't seem impressive.

The love interest has a cute personality and seems mysteriously cool at first, but the reveal to who she really is doesn't really feel all that astonishing. It was definitely unexpected, but felt pretty boring. Her and the reason for the floating bubbles in the air had no real good reason, just a ton of magic that didn't make sense.

Not to mention, the side characters don't get as much spotlight as I had hoped, leaving them to be just as dry as our main characters, though they are still likeable.

The biggest issue I found with this movie was how it was directed. While the visuals and shots were amazing, they were really boring. They made the parkour, which was a main part of the story, feel as plain was walking, with no unique shots to show how dynamic their moves were. The characters also lacked expressions as they did parkour and it is hard to see how it's special and cool. All they did was jump and use their hands to direct themselves and push off of floating debris. No angles. No special shots. Just bobbing up and down. This was the most disappointing part for me.

Lastly, the plot. The general summary Netflix provided didn't spark my interest at all, and the movie didn't do much justice for it. The setting lacked action and suspense despite being about parkour. The antagonists were also boring, with no reason to really hate them since there isn't much detail or flashbacks. The main character's development as alright by the climax, but the climax itself was just confusing and so many parts of the story felt out of place. A lot of the plot felt forced as well.

Overall, this movie should've been split into episodes and extended. They had so many characters who were bland and needed their spotlight. The plot doesn't flow naturally and the parkour needed more emotion and movement.

The movie was boring, and that basically sums up everything I just said. Visuals were nice, story needs work. If you prefer visuals and light stories over deeper and longer works than this movie would be a great watch. If you're the opposite, this isn't worth the watch.

This is my first ever movie review. I just really wanted to say something since I felt this movie was dry yet I wasn't sure how to describe it. My friends like it a lot and I don't want to ruin the mood so I might as well share my opinion here. Have a good day or night and have fun watching your movies.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Probably one of the worse anime movies i've watched. The ideas are there but the execution is terrible. So many things are happening nothing makes sense. Where do the bubbles originate from? What's with the little mermaid???? The spiral of life???? So many things are happening it's overwhelming. The character development is terrible too. Everything was too fantastic with Uta and Hibiki felt very childish watching their scenes ngl. Nothing makes sense. They used great people to make the movie but the results are awful. What's with Uta's sister too? And why is everything around just Uta and Hibiki when it involves the whole city of tokyo and you can see the bubbles throughout the world. Just extremely confusing and frustrating. Why is the universe trying to help Hibiki so badly is he god? Is he jesus? The messiah? Maria?
  • Still worth watching just for everything else than a story which is just meh...

If you enjoy love stories/parkour you may even enjoy it a little more.

I wasn't bored. That's it. Nothing more and nothing else. Fortunately everything is so beautiful in the film that it was carrying the weak story/screenplay. You can totally pass it and lose nothing. If you enjoy beautiful art the film should be worth your time just because how amazing it has been drawn. Everything else might be a bonus.

I would have give it 5 /10 at best but everything else was super good... Too much cringe in the story. I am still glad someone tries something new, etc. But this one... oh well... Maybe someone else can enjoy it much more/

  • Bubble is an anime movie that had a lot of potential. And it wasn't exactly disappointing, but it did not capitalise on it's potential.

It essentially has the exact same story as the Little Mermaid. In fact the movie keeps mentioning the similarity 'The little mermaid" on it's own. So there's nothing at all to expect from it's story. In fact, even after being same, the storytelling is rather complicated. Most of the dialogue is filled with exposition. Characters say things to each other that they'll never actually say naturally, and it's obvious they are directly talking to the audience. It has sort of a post apocalyptic setting, but it never really explains what exactly happened in the past. Or the reason behind certain fictional elements. It's obviously okay to be to have fantasy elements, but if something is important to your story it has to have a reason. The side characters too, are one dimensional and unnecessary.

But I don't regret watching this movie. Story-wise it's definitely dull but it's directed brilliantly. The visionary way this world is shown definitely captivates it's viewers. And the beautiful animation plays a huge part in that. So visually, it looks brilliant, but it even sounds brilliant. The songs and soundtrack are really really good. There is a song that constantly plays in the background, and it was really catchy and fit in perfectly with the visuals. Because of the soundtrack and direction, some moments did give me goosebumps. The voice acting also feels fresh.

In the end it's sort of a 50-50 experience, but it was definitely an experience. It reminded me of weathering with you where the visuals and soundtrack are amazing, but the story is just not good. Here, the story isn't necessarily bad, but it's dull.
