Steve Bing, a producer, philanthropist and screenwriter, has died by suicide in Los Angeles. He was 55.
Police and the coroner’s office said a man fitting his age jumped from a Century City apartment building on Monday. Sources told TMZ he had been suffering from depression.
Bing, who inherited a fortune of some $600 million from his grandfather, L.A. real estate developer Leo S. Bing, also contributed millions of dollars to Democratic political causes.
After receiving his inheritance at the age of 18, Bing dropped out of Stanford to try out the movie business. While he was still a high school student at Harvard-Westlake, he wrote the story for “Missing in Action” and later wrote an episode of “Married With Children.”
In 2003, he co-wrote the action comedy “Kangaroo Jack,” starring Anthony Anderson and Jerry O’Connell.
Bing invested some $80 million in “The Polar Express,” the Tom Hanks-voiced 2004 film directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Cinemax has given a straight-to-series order to drama Jett, from Snakes on a Plane and Gothika scribe Sebastian Gutierrez, with Carla Gugino attached to star and executive produce.
Written by Gutierrez, in Jett, fresh out of prison, world-class thief Daisy ”Jett” Kowalski (Gugino) is forced back into doing what she does best by dangerous and eccentric criminals determined to exploit her skills for their own ends.
Gugino’s Daisy “Jett” Kowalski is an intensely practical and self-reliant thief, an unsentimental woman of action. With the birth of her daughter, Jett planned to put her career in crime behind her, only to find herself drawn into doing one last job.
Jett is produced by Global Road Entertainment for Cinemax. Gutierrez executive produces and directs. Mark Stern, Stuart Ford and Dana Brunetti also executive produce. Stacey Levin is co-executive producer. Kathy Landsberg is line producer.

"Late Night with Seth Meyers" is probably best when the host invites his famous pals to yak, reminisce, and sometimes engage in hilarious new sketches. Remember when Ana Gasteyer apologized to Martha Stewart on Seth's show? Gold. This week Seth invited another of his "SNL" pals to be hilarious, and it provided yet another gem. Here he is with Rachel Dratch in a sketch about apologizing for past misgivings. This calls to mind a theory I'd like to share: Rachel Dratch is secretly one of the most versatile cast members in "SNL" history and potentially the most underrated of the 21st century. Remember Debbie Downer? You do. She's even willing to complete a "Double Dare"-like course and disparage the career of Julia Roberts for a laugh. Of all her characters, this "lover" is the most ingenious. She's a recognizable, yet rare type for comedy. She's lecherous but deluded,...

This spring Josh Hartnett returns to our collective consciousness in Showtime's "Penny Dreadful," and it has been a long time since we've seen him anything. The past four of five years has seen the actor drift with indies nobody saw ("Stuck Between Stations," "August," "Girl Walks Into A Bar"), genre fare that no one saw ("Bunraku," "I Come With The Rain") and troubled international blockbusters ("Singularity"). But perhaps his career might've been different, if he had made some different choices. In an interview with Details, the actor is up front about turning down some major roles, including Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns," early in his career. "Spider-Man was something we talked about. Batman was another one. But I somehow knew those roles had potential to define me, and I didn't want that. I didn't want to be labeled as Superman for the rest of my career. I was maybe 22, but I saw the danger,...

Tina Fey was so triumphant as the host of Saturday Night Live‘s 39th season opener, jumping from a dead-on Girls parody to a seriously macabre Model T commercial, that I had no choice but to think about SNL‘s breakout female stars all day. And rank them. I’m sure you’ve had this instinct, no?
So here they are: the 11 greatest female SNL cast members ever. Apologies for not ranking Ellen Cleghorne, who wrote one of my favorite standup jokes of all time. (“My friend bought a dog. I told her, ‘Give me $500 and I’ll sh*t on your carpet.’”)
11. Jan Hooks
The ferocious Jan Hooks gave us arguably the most lachrymose impression of Tammy Faye Bakker ever (a true feat), along with kickass takes on Sinead O’Connor and Kathie Lee Gifford. As one half of the dynamic and fabulous-as-hell Sweeney Sisters, she served as the...

It was originally believed that visual effects artist Tim Miller would be making his feature directorial debut with Deadpool, a film based on the much-loved loud-mouthed mercenary comic book anti-hero played by Ryan Reynolds, but given that project hasn't moved an inch in a long while it looks like another movie has caught his eye. The filmmaker is now attached to helm Seasons, a new science-fiction project based on a novella written by Joe Haldeman. Deadline reports that the story follows a group of scientists as they board a space ship to visit an alien world. Unfortuantely, the world is filled with "sentient humanoids" and everything goes to hell in a hand-basket. Sebastian Gutierrez, who is best known for writing and directing movies like Women In Trouble, Elektra Luxx and Girl Walks Into A Bar, is handling the screenplay while Michael De Luca (Moneyball, Fright Night) is set to produce.

Writer and Director Sebastian Gutierrez has a knack for convincing lots of talented actors to star in his horribly written and directed films like Elektra Luxx, Women in Trouble, and his latest disaster Girl Walks Into a Bar. While his longtime girlfriend Carla Gugino’s involvement is no mystery, somehow he convinced Alexis Bledel, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Zachary Quinto, Rosario Dawson, Danny DeVito, Josh Hartnett, Xander Berkeley, Gil Bellows, and Amber Valletta to star in a cluttered story of stilted dialogue and cutaways worthy of only the worst film school productions. I don’t know how he does it, but each and every time it’s an utter waste of talent, just not his own.

I don't understand a lot of things. I don't understand why my neighbor is pursuing a career as a 1990s electronic music artist. I don't understand why the ice cream shop near my house considers two scoops of ice cream one scoop. And I don't understand how women, educated journalists, can be so unfair when writing about other women.

She kicks off her article by ripping right into the looks of star and writer Lennon Parham:

Seriously, that movie is so bad I couldn't even review it after seeing it in Toronto two years ago. Let's get to it... Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry Rated R For some language. Josh Hartnett has left CAA, and he has been making the rounds of agencies looking for new representation. Even though they might be unexcited by his recent movies like Bunraku and Girl Walks Into A Bar, the agencies are all over him. Who can blame them? This is a strapping young guy who can act and is only 33. I thought he was going to be a big star when he made Pearl Harbor and especially Black Hawk Down. While occasional films reminded of his potential — how great was Hartnett in 30 Days Of Night, maybe the coolest vampire movie since From Dusk Till Dawn? – for the most part he has leaned toward indie, artsy fare. I can still remember in the early 2000s when Hartnett was offered the Superman role by Warner Bros in a three-picture deal that potentially could have paid him $100 million. He turned it down because he didn...

In her new autobiography, Girl Walks Into a Bar…: Comedy Calamities, Dating Disasters, and a Midlife Miracle, former Saturday Night Live star Rachel Dratch—the rubber-faced comedian behind Debbie Downer and Abe Scheinwald, to name two of her creations—comes clean about growing up, life behind the scenes on SNL, what happened with 30 Rock, dating possible cannibals, and her life now that she’s in her forties and a first-time mother. In addition to Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, who play Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert, respectively, the Oscar winning filmmaker has also brought Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne along for the ride. With Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch out now in cinemas, we interviewed actors Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac about its production, and its edits for a 12A rating…
Zack Snyder's latest extravaganza has caused quite the ruckus. Women, very little clothing, lobotomies, threats of sexual assault, and guns. Lots of guns. Sucker Punch has all that, wrapped up in a 12A rating.
It also has, in Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac, two actors who couldn't be more different than their onscreen incarnations. If Gugino's Madam Gorski is a fiercely strict dance teacher (think Vincent Cassell in Black Swan, just without the inappropriate touching), she's the opposite in person – warm, friendly, and chatty to the point where twenty-five minutes in her company seems barely enough time at all.
Likewise Isaac, who's so relaxed and laid back on a plush hotel sofa that he's almost horizontal. His big, bad villain, Blue,...

Sebastian Gutierrez has written movies like Gothika and Snakes on a Plane but recently, he’s directing some small, wonderful films that include some incredibly talented actors.
Josh Brolin, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Connie Britton, Timothy Olyphant, Danny Devito, Rosario Dawson and Carla Gugino are just some of the actors that have recently worked with Sebastian. His films, Women in Trouble and its sequel, Elektra Luxx and the very first movie to premiere on the internet, Girl Walks Into A Bar are mostly anthology-based and he says that’s a great way to get actors to come out and work for a couple days.
Elektra Luxx is now playing and it follows Gugino (in a continuation of her role in Women in Trouble) as a pregnant porn star who is trying to reinvent herself.

In interview with The New York Magazine, Baz Luhrmann has said he’s “not doing Gatsby right now”.
“I’m not doing Gatsby right now for this reason [that most of his team is in Brooklyn]. Because despite what might be out there, I have made no comment about anything. So until I say it, it’s not said, you know,” said Luhrmann.
The announcement that Luhrmann would start production of the $120m film in Sydney in August was made by the Nsw Government on February 20: “Nsw has secured production of Baz Luhrmann’s 3D film The Great Gatsby – injecting more than $120 million into the Nsw economy and supporting more than 825 jobs. One need not be all that familiar with Sebastien Gutierrez' 'Women in Trouble' or 'Elektra Luxx' to get the vibe pouring out of the latest collaboration between the filmmaker and his lovely muse, Carla Gugino, but it will certainly help your viewing experience if you enjoy clever dialogue, amusing twists, and strong women. Half an anthology piece, of sorts, and half an "all in one night" neo-noir dark comedy, 'Girl Walks Into a Bar' is about as "experimental" a flick you'll find outside the festival circuit -- it actually debuted on YouTube following its SXSW world premiere -- but it's also unexpectedly breezy, quick-witted, and rather fun.
Ms. Gugino plays a tough-talking former detective who saunters her way through a colorfully weird collection of taverns, all of which house a troublemaker or two: Zachary Quinto as a dentist who wants his...

Now playing in the YouTube Screening Room, and said to be “Hollywood’s first feature-length film created specifically for the internet.” It’s a comedy called Girl Walks Into A Bar, and centers on “a seemingly unrelated group of characters spending a single night at ten different bars throughout Los Angeles.” Directed by Sebastian Gutiérrez, the film stars Carla Gugino, Rosario Dawson, Zachary Quinto, Danny DeVito, Josh Hartnett, Alexis Bledel, and several others.

As the title may imply, Girls Walks into a Bar is largely a one-joke film, and not a very funny joke as it follows a group of strangers in several strange bar scenes in Los Angeles (ranging from cop bars, strip clubs, and a nudist members only ping-pong establishment). The film’s super low budget aesthetic which is largely shot in bar interiors doesn’t work in its favor – perhaps as a stage play it may and that medium would have helped the film’s awkward voice-overs.
The film opens with the entrance of Francine Driver (Carla Gugino) who meets with Nick (Zachary Quinto), a dentist who is hiring an assassin. Recording the conversation, she returns to find a con artist played by Aaron Tveit who steals Francine’s purse, which includes a recording of her conversation with Nick. The film inexplicably jumps to Emmanuelle Chriqui‘s Theresa who like...

Talking to director Sebastián Gutiérrez and actress Carla Gugino at South by Southwest is getting to be a yearly habit for me. This is the pair's third trip to SXSW (and third SXSW interview with yours truly) in a row after 2009's "Women in Trouble" and 2010's "Elektra Luxx." This year they've returned with "Girl Walks Into a Bar:" ten interconnected narratives set in ten different (and mostly real) Los Angeles bars. Gugino stars as Francine Driver, a fast-talking detective whose search for something very valuable propels us from one boozy location to the next. As usual, Gutiérrez and Gugino have surrounded themselves with an amazing supporting cast including Zachary Quinto, Josh Hartnett, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Alexis Bledel, Rosario Dawson and Danny DeVito.
Though Gutiérrez and Gugino are seasoned SXSW veterans by now, they come to Austin this year with a twist: "Girl Walks Into a Bar" is premiering simultaneously here...

That the SXSW Film Conference and Festival (or “South by,” as preferred by insiders), which runs March 11-19 in Austin, Texas, has changed over the past 10 years is self-evident. Once solely a haven for music lovers, the program is now also bursting with interactive new media events, prominent national sponsors and a film slate so solid that distributors have started coming here with an eye to acquisitions.
With truly original and interesting programming across sections named Narrative Feature Competition, Documentary Feature Competition, Headliners, Spotlight Premieres, Emerging Visions, 24 Beats per Second, Festival Favorites, Lone Star States, Sx Global and Special Events, there’s too much in store to provide the perfect playbook, but be sure to keep an eye out for the following baker’s dozen:
Gourdough’s: It’s not a film; it’s a food truck — and one of the many that will keep you well-oiled during the festival.

We featured the trailer for Sebastián Gutiérrez‘s Girl Walks Into A Bar, and now the entire film is streaming on YouTube. Touted as the “First Major Motion Picture Made For The Internet,” the film had a Arclight premiere in Los Angeles earlier this week, and will show at SXSW film festival. Gutiérrez, who penned Snakes on a Plane, and wrote/directed Women in Trouble, recently released Elektra Luxx and you can read our review here.

...Or we should say "Cheat Sheets" since this year's SXSW Film Festival boasts over 140 films, requiring more than just one page to cover every single one of the narrative and documentary features that will be playing in Austin from March 11th through 19th. While the festival has already provided a very helpful schedule to flip through and Pdf of the screening grid online, consider this your quick hit guide to all the features at the festival - every title leads to its corresponding festival page in addition to links to trailers, official sites, filmmakers' Facebook pages and Twitter accounts so you can follow the action from the festival or from home.
Meanwhile, there will be plenty of action during these next two weeks on IFC.com where, in addition to our live video page, Matt Singer (@mattsinger) and I (@mfrushmore) will be filing reviews and interviews throughout the film festival.

We previously told you about Girl Walks Into a Bar, writer-director Sebastian Gutierrez's movie that will debut on the Web—the first case I know of where a movie was made from the start with this in mind. Shangri-La Entertainment has now not only announced specifics of how this will work, but also released a trailer to whet our appetites.
The 80-minute film stars Zachary Quinto and my future second wife Carla Gugino, along with Danny DeVito, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Alexis Bledel, future third wife Rosario Dawson, Robert Forster, and Josh Hartnett. Quite the cast, to say the least. The movie "follows a series of characters in interlocking stories taking place in ten different bars during the course of one evening in Los Angeles."...

"YouTube-Exclusive Movie" sounds like "Straight-to-dvd's" dumber, less-talented twin. But, judging from the trailer for Girl Walks into a Bar, it could be the future of distribution. Despite the free web release, the upcoming ensemble comedy has the makings of a Hollywood film. It stars, among others, Zachary Quinto, Carla Gugino, Josh Hartnett, Rosario Dawson, and Danny DeVito. Snakes on a Plane writer/director, Sebastien Gutierrez, was behind the camera. Obviously, the fame of the actors and directors involved in the project doesn't automatically foretell the quality (if you don't believe me, remember Valentine's Day). It does show that they're taking this seriously, though, so at least the effort is there. I hesitate to completely endorse this movie as the leader of an internet film revolution. (I mean, Snakes on a Plane wasn't Pulp Fiction or anything.) But I'll [...]...

Here is the first trailer for Sebastian Gutierrez's new film Girl Walks Into a Bar. None of his films have done well at the box office or with critics. His latest effort was made exclusively for the web and for free.
As with most of his films, this new flick boasts a sweet cast that includes, Carla Gugino, Zachary Quinto, Josh Hartnett, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Robert Forster, Alexis Bledel and many more.
The story follows a group of apparent strangers who come together in a series of stories taking place in ten different bars during the course of one evening in Los Angeles. If you have seen Crash, Magnolia or Grand Canyon, you know what to expect.
Here is what Gutierez had to say about the web distribution plans:

Screenwriter Sebastián Gutiérrez ("Snakes on a Plane," "The Eye") has begun something of a little cottage industry making low-budge flicks starring a lot of he and girlfriend Carla Gugino's famous Hollywood pals, generally the buxomer the better.
The first of these, "Women in Trouble," debuted in 2009 while the sequel, "Electra Luxx," will be released on March 11th, coincidentally the same day Gutiérrez will drop another ensemble film titled "Girl Walks Into A Bar."
The twist? The new film is free. As in "free free."
Shot in 11 days on the hip new Canon 7D HD camera, Gutiérrez claims this is the first major film with bonafide stars (and, let's be honest, former stars) made exclusively for YouTube distribution. "We are excited to break the rules of feature films by letting people watch our movie for free online," says Gutiérrez.

Shangri-La Entertainment has entered into an agreement with Youtube and Lexus to bring Sebastian Gutierrez film "Girl Walks Into a Bar" free, exclusively on YouTube premiering Friday, March 11. This will be the first time a major motion picture was created exclusively for web distribution. The comedy stars Carla Gugino, Zachary Quinto, Danny DeVito, Josh Hartnett, Rosario Dawson, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Aaron Tveit, Robert Forster, Amber Valletta, Gil Bellows, Kevin Zegers and Alexis Bledel. Sebastian Gutierrez wrote, directed and produced the project. Steve Bing and Richard Rosenblatt also served as producers.

How does Sebastian Gutierrez keep getting these actors to appear in his films? So far just about all of his work has been laden with impressively [1] star-studded [2] casts [3], but nothing he's produced has even come close to finding any sort of success at the box office -- or with critics [4], for that matter. I guess that's of no consequence for his next effort though, since the film is being released exclusively on the Internet. For free. That film is Girl Walks Into a Bar, and it brings together an ensemble cast including Carla Gugino, Zachary Quinto, Josh Hartnett, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Robert Forster, Alexis Bledel and many more. That roster of actors is incentive enough to check out the film. That you won't have to pay to do so is the cherry on top. Learn more about the film and check out the trailer after the break.

I admire Sebastian Gutierrez's(Elektra Luxx) ambition in producing his upcoming flick, Girl Walks Into a Bar, as an internet-only venture. The trailer for Sebastian Gutierrez's Girl Walks into a Bar features of a number of faces you may recognize, including Danny Devito, Josh Hartnett, Zachary Quinto, Rosario Dawson and Carla Gugino. They spend the entire trailer firing self-conscious dialogue at each other, waving around guns and sometimes doing sexy dances (not Devito, don't worry). But really all you're going to remember here is the room full of no-name actors playing ping-pong totally naked.

Writer/director Sebastian Gutierrez has a spotty track record that includes penning the awesomely absurd Snakes on a Plane, writing/directing the undervalued neo-noir Judas Kiss, and the train wreck of an ensemble “comedy” Women in Trouble. He’s getting the most attention for the last’s upcoming sequel Elektra Luxx, which centers on a porn star character (played by the ever-cool Carla Gugino), who was briefly introduced in the Women.
Well Gugino and Gutierrez reunite on his next next movie, another star-studded ensemble called Girl Walks Into a Bar. The good news is the cast is stacked with fun-to-watch wild cards from Carla Gugino to Danny DeVito to Zachary Quinto to a smattering of other people whose names don’t rhyme. The bad news is this formula of interweaving narratives was a weak device in Women in Trouble, and I doubt it’ll hold up here.
