The Gayton's have created a sublime western drama. This series has superlative direction, writing, cinematography, costume, settings, score and acting. The entire cast deliver superb portrayals with Mount, Meaney, McLeavy, Heyerdahl and Common delivering captivating performances. The plot is set post Civil War and revolves around a former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon whose family is murdered by Union soldiers. This sets him on a path of vengeance and a wake of death that flows along with the first transcontinental railroad being built by Union Pacific. Along with Cullen, a seedy town called "Hell on Wheels" follows the railroad's construction. The town is home to a slew of undesirable and unsavory characters that add to the intruiging subplots. The series is ingenious, gritty, clever, violent, duplicitous, bloody, blazing and has a cathartic ending. In this viewer's opinion the main theme is what lengths and sacrifices is a man willing to go through to achieve absolution and is it possible to achieve it by dispatching of the target of revenge. The finale is outstanding and brings complete closure for the viewer. It is a mesmerizing, addictive, memorable series and remains one of the best in it's genre to date.
