Singer Quincy Brown has been tapped for a lead role in Netflix’s holiday film “Christmas Calendar” opposite Kat Graham.
The story follows Abby Sutton (Graham), who is an aspiring photographer trapped in a lowly job at a Sears’ photography. Abby inherits a magical advent calendar from her late grandmother that seems to be predicting her future – and pointing the way to a new romance with a hunky admirer. When that relationship crashes just before Christmas, she realizes that the calendar has actually been pointing her toward her best friend, who has been the constant in her life all along.
Quincy will play Josh, the male lead and love interest to Abby. Josh is described as an adorable goofball and Abby’s assistant at the Sears portrait studio. He shares Abby’s offbeat sense of humor, and always supports and encourages her in her aspirations and artistic goals.

High school boys betting to see who gets laid first is far too common a story for the limited number of non-musical features set during that hormone-driven phase of life, and so Mario Van Peebles did his best to imbue his similar story with a bit more moral fiber – but not enough to make much of a difference. All of the clichés are present in We the Party: the hot girl our protagonist pines for but is initially considered unattainable, wild house parties, the exposure of their bet, and that redemptive moment where the girl realizes maybe the guy deserves a second chance. Even though a forced conflict in the third act destroys the overall message, Van Peebles’s film does have a bit of freshness up to that point in the form of a school-mandated social project which gives the teens a greater appreciation for the world and people around them.

It's another sparse week for new releases on DVD and Blu-ray, but since I also missed last week's update I will just cover both in one shot. This week there isn't a single movie that received a major theatrical release but there was one last week: Silent House starring Elizabeth Olsen. Some of the smaller releases worth mentioning including Joseph Kahn's demented slasher parody Detention, Mario Van Peebles' high school comedy We The Party, and a slew of indie thrillers from IFC including Atm, Brake, and The Corridor. For TV releases we've got the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation remastered on Blu-ray, the first season of the dark British sci-fi series Misfits, and the Emmy-nominated mini-series Hatfields & McCoys starring Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton. Also on Blu-ray, check out the a new "mind-bending" edition of Total Recall, the Criterion release of Le Havre and a handful of Marilyn Monroe flicks.

Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "Detention" What's It About? Josh Hutcherson leads a teen cast (plus Dane Cook?!) in an over-the-top horror slasher that involves everything from time travel to body-swapping. See It Because: You're either going to love "Detention" or you're going to hate it. If you hate it, it's because you think the movie is an assault on the senses, rife with obnoxious jokes and references, and ridiculous concepts. If you love it, it's because you think "Detention" is a frantic roller coaster of a movie that accurately captures the pop smorgasbord we call teen culture. "Detention" is audacious enough to throw everything from '80s John Hughes to "Scream"-style horror in a blender and go for broke; it's up to you to decide if that's a good thing or not. Chicago – The Van Peebles name has had a long and historic contribution to the history of movies from the 1970s to today. Director Mario Van Peebles has extended a tradition of filmmaker credibility that began with his father Melvin’s breakthrough with “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song” (1971) and continues with Mario’s recent release, “We the Party.”
“We the Party” is a stylish, fly-on-the-wall look at modern high school life, mostly in the tradition of the big party/John Hughes feel, and coming of age through a series of unexpected events. Mario Van Peebles son, Mandela, plays the lead role of Hendrix Simmons, part of a group of close-knit friends who are participating in the realities of the current high school scene – with the new interactions of technology and multiculturalism – through to the normal adolescent rituals of prom, dating and trying to fit in. The high spirited cast and production...

Chicago – Mario Van Peebles is a second generation filmmaker, following the footsteps of his revolutionary director father, Melvin Van Peebles. In keeping with the family business, Mario has included his children in his latest film, “We the Party,” a high school movie about this particular time in history for youth and their culture, and the impact this era has on them.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Highly stylized and voyeuristic, this film succeeds as a hopeful view of Los Angeles high school hijinks, updated for the mix of cultures that is the experience of the City of Angels. Where it is less successful is in the sermonizing, which doesn’t flow as naturally as the kids being kids. There is a moral to the story, but that morality is laced with sticky plot points that might play better for adults, but doesn’t gibe as organically in relationship to a younger perspective.

The Hunger Games will try to make it three in a row over Easter Weekend as it goes up against American Reunion and Titanic 3D, both of which are somewhat hard to predict in terms of box office numbers. All three of the original American Pie films have been very successful but it's been about a decade since the last one, while Titanic could have a shot at being one of the more successful 3D re-releases to date if it can capitalize on '90s nostalgia. Elsewhere there are quite a few smaller releases that are also hitting VOD this weekend including The Hunter starring Willem Dafoe, the Morgan Spurlock documentary Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope and the high concept thriller Atm. Mario Van Peebles' latest film We the Party is also out, while The Raid: Redemption is expanding to quite a few more theatres. What will you be watching this weekend?...

We the Party 2012 104 minutes Rated R At its best, Mario Van Peebles' We the Party feels like the director's overt thesis statement on today's youth culture. The picture is at heart a somewhat generic youthful coming-of-age story that follows several high schoolers as they struggle to determine their place in their portion of the world. It arguably wants to be a defining portrait of a youth embroiled in the connectivity era, along with a generally upper-middle class Los Angeles living under the first minority president. But the film is actually at its best when its all-but explicitly monologuing what is clearly Van Peebles' thoughts about a whole host of social issues. The film has more educational merit than filmmaking polish. It is clearly an amateur work, with a respected filmmaker working on a shoe-string budget with largely novice actors. Because of what it preaches and what it represents, I...

Working in movies isn’t just a dream for Mandela Van Peebles -- it’s practically his birthright, given that he's the son of Mario Van Peebles ("Ali," "New Jack City") and the grandson of Melvin Van Peebles, the "godfather of black cinema," whose revolutionary 1971 film "Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song" remains one of the highest-grossing indie films ever made.

Delivering a powerful, distinct and enlightening message in film is a rare commodity in today's Hollywood scene, according to acclaimed actor-director Mario Van Peebles. The "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" star hopes that's what he has delivered in his latest directorial effort, "Redemption Road," which stars Michael Clarke Duncan, Luke Perry and Morgan Simpson, among others.
The Tennessee-set drama tells a tale of two men from distinct backgrounds embarking on a music-steered journey through the deep south who are then linked by a series of events that took place years earlier.

Shot last summer, but with no distributor yet, and thus no scheduled release date, the film, We The Party (not to be confused with We The Peeples), was previewed at a February screening in Los Angeles, and was apparently well-received (the photo above is from that event – Mario and his two sons).
Although, I still haven’t been able to find an official synopsis for it. Its IMDb page doesn’t have it. One write-up of the preview screening described it as a film “that captures high school life in Los Angeles and features a ton of music and cameos from artists like Yg, New Boyz and REJ3CTZ.”
