Actor Idris Elba and media mogul Tyler Perry once collaborated for the feature Daddy’s Little Girls. But Elba’s time on set didn’t seem to change the actor’s mind on some of Perry’s work.

Elba was already very familiar with Perry’s work. In 2007, he co-starred alongside Gabrielle Union in the Perry picture Daddy’s Little Girls. There, he played a blue-collar worker trying to make ends meet for his family. Union was already on board the project before Elba was cast. Both Perry and Union agreed emphatically that he was the right actor for the movie.
“We screen-tested a few men, and the only man on both our lists – I made a list and Tyler made a list – the only man on both our lists was Idris. It was a no-brainer,” Union once told MovieWeb.

Home to the Taylor Sheridan stable and to the “Star Trek” franchise, Paramount+ is looking for “populist” dramas that hold a wider sway and can span several seasons, said Paramount TV president Nicole Clemens at her keynote at Mia Market in Rome on Tuesday.
“We’re not looking for shows that just play to New York and Los Angeles,” Clemens explained. “That doesn’t mean they’re not edgy, that doesn’t mean [they can’t be] dark. But we want to have a broader, propulsive appeal. Something like populist literature would be a good [description.]”
Pointing toward the recent “Frasier” reboot, Clemens described her company’s half-hour remit as “big, loud, funny, hard comedy,” and if that comes with recognizable star or brand name I.P. – or both, as luck would have it for the Kelsey Grammer-led reboot – then all the better.
More importantly, the shows would have room to grow over several years.

February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

Rexclusive: Netflix’s big spending at the virtual EFM is continuing with a mighty worldwide pre-buy of around $55M for Christian Bale Gothic horror-thriller The Pale Blue Eye, which will reunite the actor with director Scott Cooper.
By our calculations, the deal marks a record for a worldwide deal at the European Film Market. The streamer beat out multiple competitors for the project.
The movie, which Cooper has wanted to make for more than a decade, revolves around the attempt to solve a series of murders that took place in 1830 at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Oscar-winner Bale will play a veteran detective who investigates the murders, helped by a detail-oriented young cadet who will later become a world famous author, Edgar Allan Poe.

We’re still a couple of weeks out from The Boys returning with its second season, but based on the footage we’ve seen so far, it certainly looks as if we’re in for another wild ride. One that may even top the first run of the show, which was one of the best things that we’d seen on television in a long time.

An election season is fast-approaching in the U.S. So for its new releases in September 2020, Amazon Prime is bringing back one of its most political shows.
The Boys season 2 premieres its first three episodes on September 4. Though the show on its face is a superhero story, viewers of season 1 will know it’s really about America’s troubling embrace of entertainment with fascism. Sounds fun and not at all terrifying right before a presidential election!
That’s not the only bleak Amazon original on the schedule for September. British TV adaptation Utopia arrives on September 25. This Gillian Flynn-produced series follows fans of a comic book who believe it predicts…world-ending pandemics. Darn it. Amazon’s only original film this month is a…documentary about voter suppression from Liz Garbus called All In: The Fight for Democracy. Yikes.

Netflix has set an October 16 streaming date for Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, its $56M global pickup from Cross Creek, in what looks to be the first of its 2020-21 awards season contenders.
Paramount, which first had distribution rights to the movie, was eyeing a fall platform release, initially with a limited debut of September 25, then an expansion on October 9 and a full wide release of October 16 — hence Netflix’s drop date keeps with what was originally planned for theatrical prior to this year’s U.S. presidential election.
Cross Creek still is co-producing the film with Netflix.
Directed and scripted by Oscar and Emmy winner Sorkin, the pic follows protest organizers Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden and Bobby Seale at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, which went from a peaceful protest to a violent clash with police and the National Guard. Welcome to this week’s Aew: Dynamite review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and I pulled my vagina. The TNT Title tournament is in full-swing, which is fine as long as the stick doesn’t explode when it comes back this way. As I piano-key my teeth in case this dynamite explodes near my face, why don’t you read the review?
Match #1: Cody Rhodes defeated Darby Allin – TNT Championship Tournament Semi Final Match The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:
Jericho said he was impressed with the previous performances in the match between Darby and Sammy Guevara, as both wrestlers left everything they had in the ring. It showed how important the TNT Championship is to both of them, and everyone in the tournament. Shawn Spears was watching behind the ringside barrier, still stewing over his loss to Cody. Cody and Darby locked up in the center of the ring.

“Twilight” and “Miss Bala” director Catherine Hardwicke has signed a deal to direct the adaptation of Vault Comic’s best-selling and acclaimed epic feminist comic book series “Heathen,” for Constantin Film and Prime Universe Films, the companies announced on Wednesday.
Kerry Williamson has signed on to write. Williamson previously penned the Tyler Perry-starring “Alex Cross” and most recently, Netflix’s “What Happened to Monday.” She is currently working on an adaptation of the fantasy series “Sandman Slim” for director Chad Stahelski and Studio 8.
Written and drawn by Natasha Alterici, “Heathen” centers on Aydis, a young female Viking, a warrior, an outcast, and a self-proclaimed “heathen.” Born into a time of warfare, suffering, and subjugation of women, she is on a mission to end the oppressive reign of the God-king Odin.

Projects in the development pipeline include Patterson’s “House of Robots” series, about a boy and his robot brother; adventure series “Treasure Hunters”; and “I Funny,” about a middle school boy who dreams of becoming a standup comedian. There’s also a young adult series about a warrior princess based on the upcoming novel “Sophia, Princess Among Beasts.”

Welcome to the “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Black Panther continued its box-office dominance as it passed the $500 million mark domestically this past weekend. This week, Disney looks to keep up its winning ways with not only Black Panther, but with A Wrinkle in Time as well. The Mouse House will have a lot of competition as three other wide releases also open in the form of The Hurricane Heist, The Strangers: Prey at Night, and Gringo. There are a lot of options, but which are worth a trip to the cineplex?

This weekend’s openers did not look like standouts on paper. But two star vehicles, Tyler Perry’s “Boo! A Madea Halloween” (Lionsgate) and Tom Cruise’s “Jack Reacher: Never Look Back” (Paramount), both exceeded their expected $20 million openings. The reason? They gave moviegoers, who may be feeling a tad rattled during this tempestuous election season, something familiar and safe.
Add in the middling “Ouija: Origin of Evil” (Universal) and the flop “Keeping Up With the Joneses” (20th Century Fox) and the unusually heavy release schedule (before the must-to-avoid Halloween weekend) reversed recent sliding gross totals. Temporary? We’ll see. But it’s better news for sure.
The Top Ten
1. Boo! A Madea Halloween (Lionsgate) New – Cinemascore: A; Metacritic: 34; Est. budget: $20 million

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Another bad weekend where nothing really popped, which is bad news for a month at the box office where only Clint Eastwood’s Sully exceeded any expectations. Tim Burton’s new film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children came out just below my predictions with $29 million, but the Mark Wahlberg-Peter Berg disaster flick Deepwater Horizon was right around where I predicted with $20.2 million. The comedy Masterminds tanked with just $6.5 million for the weekend to end up in sixth place while Disney’s The Queen of Katwe did slightly better than predicted with $2.5 million.

The past decade hasn't been too kind to director Rob Cohen. The director, who is perhaps best known for directing Vin Diesel in the "Fast and the Furious" and "xXx" in the early 2000s hasn't done much for me to be excited about in recent years. In 2005, he directed "Stealth," the forgettable plane movie starring Jamie Foxx. In 2008, he directed the third "Mummy" flick, which effectively ended the franchise. In 2012, he directed the terrible "Alex Cross" movie, and most recently, he helmed the Jennifer Lopez vehicle "Boy Next Door," which wasn't any better received by viewers or critics.
It's now been revealed that Cohen will be going back to the crazy silly action genre with "Category 5," a film that "follows a team of tech hackers who infiltrate a U.S. Mint facility on a small coastal town to steal $102M in cash, just as a disastrous Category 5 hurricane, the storm of the century,...

"The Fast and the Furious" and "Alex Cross" director Rob Cohen is set to helm the disaster action thriller "Category 5". Casting is currently underway ahead of filming this spring and summer.
The story follows a group of tech hackers who infiltrate a U.S. Mint facility on a small coastal town to steal $102 million, doing so just before a disastrous Category 5 hurricane hits the area and wipes out any trace of their crime.
The only two people left in the town, a meteorologist and a treasury agent, must survive the storm while stopping the thieves from getting away with the heist of the century.
Karen Baldwin, Michael Tadross Jr. and Danny Roth will produce.

It was about 4 years ago when Vin Diesel told us that we should expect to see him in at least 1 more "xXx" flick. A year passed before we would hear anything further on the possibility of the threequel, when director Rob Cohen was asked about it during an interview while doing press for the then upcoming "Alex Cross" movie he helmed. Cohen, talking to Crave Online, talked about his plans to bring back Xander Cage (which would see the return of Vin Diesel in the role. Recall Ice Cube took over for the second one - "xXx: State of the Union" - playing Darius...

Rebecca Ferguson ("Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation") is in early talks to co-star with Michael Fassbender in "The Snowman" for Working Title, Another Park Film and Universal Pictures.
The story revolves around detective Harry Hole (Fassbender), a loose cannon in the Oslo police force who investigates the disappearance of a woman whose pink scarf is found wrapped around an ominous-looking snowman.
The Harry Hole character has appeared in ten novels by Jo Nesbo, and the aim is for the film to potentially launch a series similar to the way James Patterson's Alex Cross books yielded multiple films.
Tomas Alfredson ("Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy") will direct the film which was written by Soren Sveistrup. Piodor Gustafsson, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce.
