My review was written in August 1987 after watching the show on Dusty Woods Entertainment video cassette.
This program, made in Canada in 1985, is a pleasant exercise in pop psychology aimed at honing the skills of would-be makeout artists. Though billed as a feature film, it is mainly a talking heads lecture of dos and don'ts on the singles scene.
Comedian Allan Katz, a harmless-looking, slightly chubby nebbish, is the writer-star who portrays the successful swinger. Two actresses appear as professors giving an ersatz scholarly approach to the show, which is basically 70 minutes of a "Sex IQ Test" followed by a reel of putting the pickup technique, dubbed "The Method", into action.
The Sex IQ Test consists of 24 multiple-choice questions, four possible answers to choose from each, covering the topics of physical presence, sensuality, identification & understanding, body language, conversation and a positive attitude. Katz, who provides encouragement to the viewer in the rah-rah format of Richard Simmons, is joined by a bevy of beauties in explaining how guys make mistakes in their courting rituals. Stressing a positive attitude, the program attempts to suggest methods of self-improvement, which rather dubiously Katz states flatly will improve one's odds from a basic 2% to approximately 33% in picking up women using "The Method".
The talky lecture is broken up by beautiful Linda Smith interjecting quotations and bits of trivia, as well as a tasteful reverse-striptease during the final reel by another knockout beauty. Despite the psychological jargon, the whole effort is little more than common sense in showing how to act naturally and draw out other people (in this case women) via conversational ploys. It's not exactly comedic or tongue-in-cheek, but you know they're kidding when the line: "Don't I know you from somewhere?" is included among the surefire elements of "The Method".
