The gig economy, and the food delivery industry in particular, are set for scrutiny in “Appetite,” an Australian short-form series that will debut next month at Canneseries, the TV festival that runs alongside the Mip-TV rights market (April 14-19).
“Appetite” is a mystery-comedy in which three penniless food delivery riders are brought together after their housemate mysteriously vanishes on the same night as a rider has a fatal roadside accident. They set out to discover the truth behind the accident and expose multinational food behemoth, Appetite.
“Appetite” was created by Mohini Herse (“Hair”) who wrote, directed and produced the series under her Fell Swoop Pictures banner. She worked with fellow writers Neilesh Verma (“Letters Home”) and Grace Tan (“Lucky Peach”), director Neil Sharma (“Heartbreak High”), and producer Karen Radzyner (“Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo”).

Glendyn Ivin is a huge fan of Peter Weir.s Gallipoli but he has resisted the temptation to revisit Weir.s seminal 1981 movie since he was hired to direct the Nine Network miniseries Gallipoli. .I love that film; it.s one of the reasons I became a filmmaker,. Ivin told If on Monday during a recce for the eight-hour production which starts shooting in and near Melbourne on March 17. .But I have avoided watching it again because we are doing a very different story..

The screenplay is by Christopher Lee (Howzat! Kerry Packer.s War, Paper Giants, Rush, Police Rescue), adapted from the best-selling book by Les Carlyon.

A qualitative research study commissioned by Screen Australia affirms the importance of Australian screen culture but pays scant attention to the issue of why cinemagoers rarely see local films.
The Ipsos Australia report, Hearts & Minds, affirms that Australians believe that a strong local film and television industry producing high-quality content is essential to their sense of culture and identity.

The Ipsos Australia report, Hearts & Minds, affirms that Australians believe that a strong local film and television industry producing high-quality content is essential to their sense of culture and identity.
The study found the heavily promoted Hollywood films have a strong advantage in attracting cinemagoers but said Australians will go to see a local film if it has buzz and strong word-of-mouth. Reflecting their box-office results, Australia, Red Dog and The Sapphires were the most often cited examples.

Magazine legend Ita Buttrose has just been named Australian of the Year. She speaks to Encore about the launch of Elle magazine, the second installment of Paper Giants and the future of tablet publishing.
You’ve just been named the 2013 Australian of the year. How does that feel?
It feels pretty good actually. It was a big surprise when the Pm read out my name because I was there with many other distinguished Australians who have all contributed in so many ways to shaping the nation. You’re in very good company when you’re a finalist in the Australian of the Year and you think, that’s my name. Goodness. So it was very exciting and quite a moving time for me. Somebody said to me ‘you looked a bit emotional’ and I said ‘well, it is an emotional moment to be called Australian of the year’.

After 16 years at Seven, Janeen Faithfull joined production company Southern Star in February. The CEO tells Brooke Hemphill how to make shows audiences want to watch.
Between Big Brother, Puberty Blues and Howzat! Southern Star is doing well in the current TV landscape. You must be pleased.
We are thrilled. There are a lot of people working very hard to get the shows out. Big Brother’s half way through the run now and we’re really happy with how it’s performed. Channel Nine’s very happy and we’re hopeful that we’ll see the series out on the same numbers and hopefully we’ll do it all again next year.
Tell us about Big Brother. Did Southern Star set out to change it up for its return to Australian television?
The show was off the air for four years and we’re the producer not the broadcaster...

Production company Jungleboys has teamed up with the ABC to create a charming and familiar comedy series, A Moody Christmas, writes Georgina Pearson.
The plot for ABC comedy drama A Moody Christmas treads a familiar path: London-based son returns home to Australia for family Christmas: chaos ensues. An ode to the Aussie festive season, it spins the story of one dysfunctional family’s attempt at forced civility with a twist – each episode of the six-part series is set on Christmas Day, one year apart.
Created by production company Jungleboys, A Moody Christmas airs at the end of a soft year for ABC comedy with little memorable fare to deliver laughs in 2012. The format of the series, the brainchild of Trent O’Donnell and Phil Lloyd, creators of Review with Miles Barlow, has the potential to finish the year with a chuckle.

Rhonda and Ketut in the Aami ads
The marketing director behind one of the most popular ads of the year – the Aaim safe driver campaign – has said that social media was the secret to propelling brand heroine Rhonda and her Balinese fling Ketut into the mainstream.
Richard Riboni, executive marketing manager at Aami, said that a Facebook page devoted to the sexual tension between Rhonda and Katut was the moment he realised that the campaign had struck a nerve with the Australian public.
“Seeing people wearing Rhonda t-shirts in Bali was exciting, but watching that Facebook page take off was the point where we realised that the campaign was bigger than we originally thought – that it had entered the Australian psyche,” he told Mumbrella.
The Facebook page now has more than 115,000 ‘likes’.
“You never really know if the public is going to like the characters you create. Rhonda is an everyday knock-about Aussie girl.

I did not, I must confess, spend the Afl grand final like a proper Sydneysider watching the Sydney Swans beat Hawthorn with beer in hand.
Somewhat less glamorously, I spent my Saturday afternoon opening up for the cleaners as they gave our new office its first once over.
The house across the road was having a footy party – and a loud one at that. As I watched the game in the office, I could hear the cheers and groans as the game unfolded.
And want to know what one of the biggest cheers during the game was was? When they cut from the action to an ad break and Rhonda, unthreatening everyday heroine of the Aami ad, finally got it on with her Bali waiter Katut. A blokey voice rose above the cheers with the words “Go’rn Rhonda!” It was the sort of moment that marketers dream about.

Ita Buttrose – widely seen as the most accomplished editor in the history of Australian magazines – is contemplating a return to editing, Mumbrella can reveal.

Former magazine editor Ita Buttrose claims the producers of Paper Giants knew there were inaccuracies in the script before the show screened.
The Southern Star-produced show about the launch of women’s magazine Cleo aired on ABC1 last year to critical acclaim. However, it portrayed Buttrose’s first husband Alisdair Macdonald as selfishly abandoning Buttrose while she was pregnant.
Macdonald sued the ABC for defamation after the show aired. The ABC was forced to withdraw all DVD copies of Paper Giants after settling with him out of court.
Buttrose, who is currently promoting a new edition of her autobiography told Mumbrella in a video interview: “I told them it was incorrect – and that was before the show ever went to air. I couldn’t persuade them to change it.”

Alasdair Macdonald, the former husband of magazine editor Ita Buttrose, has settled his defamation case against the ABC out of court.
Macdonald was suing the ABC over the way he was portrayed in the mini-series Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo.
Details of the settlement, which was completed on Friday, remain confidential, according to Macdonald’s counsel.
Macdonald claims no one contacted him to verify the truth of the story before production.
When Mumbrella rang the ABC shop helpline we were told that copies of the series DVD had been withdrawn due to a “legal issue”.
Macdonald claims he was shown in the TV mini-series in a negative light, falsely depicting him as being “selfish and irresponsible” in scenes in which he abandons his heavily pregnant wife and young child so he could ”find himself and be a free spirit”.

Loving the underdog is what Aussies are all about, and this was proved again last night at the 54th Annual Logies Awards Ceremony held at Crown Palladium in Melbourne.
Despite Carrie Bickmore of Channel 10.s highly successful The Project being the favourite to take out the major gong, the Gold Logie for most popular personality on TV went instead to comedian Hamish Blake of Hamish and Andy.s Gap Year.
In a minor controversy leading up to this unexpected win, while testing its new IPad application the Herald Sun experienced a technical glitch, leading to the publishing of a link to an embargoed press release containing Logies winners an hour prior to the Gold Logie being officially announced during Channel Nine.s coverage.
The link was killed immediately, but not before Google picked it up. In the split second it was available, lucky net-trawlers picked it up and leaked it onto Facebook and Twitter,...

Nine comedian Hamish Blake has won the Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality at the 54th TV Week Logie Awards.
However, public broadcaster the ABC won the most awards, followed by Nine, Seven and Ten.
Blake pipped fellow nominees Adam Hills, Asher Keddie, Karl Stevanovic, Carrie Bickmore and Esther Anderson to the top gong.
Blake’s win was leaked online by The Herald Sun about an hour before the presentation of the Gold Logie and was a spoiler for the room. However Ten’s Breakfast reports Blake maintained he didn’t know before the announcement was made.
Across the networks, the ABC came out on top with six and a shared award – the shared coming from Asher Keddie’s Most Popular Actress win for her work in both the ABC’s Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo and Ten’s Offspring.

Comedian Hamish Blake's big win at the 2012 Logie Awards was spoiled on Sunday after the news leaked online just hours before the ceremony.
The funnyman was the toast of the Australian TV prizegiving in Melbourne after receiving the evening's highest honour, the Gold Logie, which is presented to the country's most popular personality.
News of his win was posted online before the stars had even walked the red carpet, but Blake was unaware of his triumph, insisting, "Ultimately all that information was kept from me so it was a genuine surprise. I'm glad too because I am not a great actor."
Also receiving major accolades were Ben Rafter's Hugh Sheridan and Offspring's Asher Keddie, who both walked away with Silver Logies for Most Popular Actor and Actress, respectively.
The Slap star Melissa George took home the prize for Outstanding Actress and Rob Carloton of the Paper Giants took home the same award in the male category.
Rapper Flo Rida and singer Seal provided the entertainment for the evening, while Sir Elton John and Delta Goodrem took the stage to pay tribute to music personality Ian 'Molly' Meldrum, who suffered a severe head injury during a fall in December.
The Rocket Man said, "I know I speak for many artists and music lovers around world when I say thank you, there's no one like you," while Goodrem added, "I refer to Molly as the Godfather, he always watches over me and many other artists."
British boy band One Direction closed out the ceremony with a rendition of One Thing.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation has revealed that a sequel to the successful series Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo is set to hit Australian screens soon.
The ABC sequel will cover the 1990s Sydney-based rivalry of Dulcie Boling and Nene King, the women behind the popular magazines New Idea and Woman’s Day.
The rivalry between the two editors was sparked when King joined Woman’s Day, leaving her colleague Boling at New Idea. King transformed Woman’s Day into a market-dominating circulation selling more than one million copies a week.
Southern Star Productions will again take the reins with producer John Edwards and directed by Daina Reid, following on from Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald article, ABC casting has not yet been confirmed and the actors roles have not been selected.

The Beaconsfield mine collapse of 2006 was one of the most gripping events to ever rock this country. Sam Dallas finds out how it was recreated for telemovie Beaconsfield, which will premiere on Sunday, April 22, at 8.30pm on Channel Nine.
For his latest screen project, Sydney-based filmmaker Jon Rohde had to descend 1km underground to research the look and feel of a working gold mine. Not your typical day for a production designer.
It was dark, it was dingy, it was claustrophobic . it was essential. In what was probably Rohde.s most challenging project to date, the filmmaker had to document everything he saw with precision because it had to be recreated in a short period of time with limited resources.
.This particular project had to be spot on because there was so much media coverage,. he says, describing the 2006 Beaconsfield mine collapse. No-one knew the nightmare facing trapped miners Brant Webb and Todd Russell,...

Asher Keddie has revealed that she feels "pretty special" after receiving a Gold Logie nomination. The Australian actress, who is best known for her roles in Offspring and Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo, said that she never used to be a fan of popular awards ceremonies like the Logies but has now changed her mind. Keddie told the Herald Sun: "I used to think it was the industry peer-voted stuff that was most important, but having won 'Most Popular Actress' last year, I think I've changed my mind. "I was thrilled to accept that. It was a great show of faith from [the Offspring] audience to embrace a show that is not always easy to digest. I assume that's why I was celebrated then, so I'm quite keen on the popular awards now." Keddie said of her Gold nomination: "I've never been quite sure what (more)...
