Earlier this year, it was announced that the last horror film from the filmmaking duo of Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo would be an adaptation of the Alexis Laipsker novel The Soul Eater (a.k.a. Le mangeur d’âmes), with Virginie Ledoyen (The Beach), Paul Hamy (The Ornithologist), and Sandrine Bonnaire (Women at War) taking on the lead roles. Now Deadline reports that WTFilms will be presenting The Soul Eater, which is currently in post-production, to potential buyers at the upcoming American Film Market. That presentation will include a screening of an early promo of the film. Along with that report comes the unveiling of a creepy first look image, which can be seen at the bottom of this article.
The Soul Eater has the following synopsis: “He didn’t scream. They never scream.” Some well-kept secrets sometimes turn out to be too heavy to bear… When the disappearance...

The French filmmaking duo of Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo caught international attention with their debut feature, the brutal home invasion story Inside, in 2007. Since then, Maury and Bustillo have continued working in the horror genre, making the films Livid, Among the Living, Leatherface (a prequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Kandisha, and The Deep House. Now Maury has taken to Instagram to announce that they have officially started production on their seventh feature, an adaptation of the Alexis Laipsker novel The Soul Eater (a.k.a. Le mangeur d’âmes). Laipsker also celebrated the start of production, tweeting out a promotional image that reveals The Soul Eater stars Virginie Ledoyen (The Beach), Paul Hamy (The Ornithologist), and Sandrine Bonnaire (Women at War). You can take a look at that image at the bottom of this article.

Exclusive: Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta books have completed their long journey to the screen with a blockbuster TV series starring Oscar winner Nicole Kidman in the title role and Oscar nominee Jamie Lee Curtis as the famous forensic pathologist’s sister Dorothy, I have learned. Kidman is executive producing through Blossom Films and Curtis through Comet Pictures the drama, from writer-showrunner Liz Sarnoff (Barry) and Blumhouse Television, which I hear is nearing a two-season straight-to-series order at Prime Video. A rep for the streamer declined comment as deals for the project, to be produced by Amazon Studios and Blumhouse, are still being finalized. It is expected to receive an order for two eight-episode seasons, sources said.
Liz Sarnoff

In Moroccan folklore, Kandisha was a woman who used her beauty to seduce and kill invading Portuguese soldiers. After her death, she was reborn as a djinn who seduces men and lures them to their death. It’s also the title of the latest film from writer/directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury. Radar Films, the Mediawan-owned production banner, is reteaming with “The Deep House” filmmakers Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo on “North Sentinel.” The well-established company, which is headed by Clement Miserez and Matthieu Warter, is developing several other English-language projects including a genre twist on “The Phantom of the Opera” directed by Xavier Gens (“The Divide”).
Rolling off “The Deep House,” an underwater horror film that was just acquired by Blumhouse and Epix, Maury and Bustillo will next direct “North Sentinel.” Pic is inspired by the true story of an explorer who set off to visit a dangerous island located deep in the Indian Ocean, where a tribe of indigenous people live, and was killed. Visiting the island or going anywhere near it has been banned by the Indian government. “North Sentinel” will revolve around a young American woman who embarks on a journey to the island in order find her missing brother.

With “The Deep House,” the French director duo Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo have revamped the haunted house genre by shooting almost the entire film under water.
The buzzy title, which was produced by Radar Films with Logical Pictures and is releasing in French cinemas next week, caught the eye of Jason Blum’s horror film powerhouse Blumhouse. The company acquired U.S. rights to the indie film, and Epix will release it domestically.
Well-liked in the industry for their happy-go-lucky personality and sense of humour, Maury and Bustillo, who are both in their 40’s, have become the leading lights of a new wave of French horror cinema with their first two acclaimed features, “Livid” and “Inside,” which played at Cannes’ Critics Week.

Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury‘s Leatherface is yet another unique interpretation of Texas Chainsaw tonality. This is the beginnings of evil; a moody dive behind the monster’s mask. After The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 introduced a colorful misery, after roadkill grindhouse turned darkly comical, after 2003’s “gritty, dark reboot.” Here, the filmmakers behind Inside, Livide and Among The Living use Seth M. Sherwood’s screenplay to explore what could drive one child to his slaughterhouse obsession – with mixed results.
Though certainly not the franchise’s worst outing, it’s far from an instant classic and in some rather surprising news, it seems as if the origin story will be heading to Blu-Ray a lot sooner than we expected. That’s because we now know that Leatherface will be yours to take home on December 19th.

Millennium Films who stuffed the aforementioned piece of shit Texas Chainsaw 3D down our throats two years ago will once again be the production vehicle guiding us through the questionable Leatherface. However the fact that Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo the duo responsible for the amazing films Inside ( lintrieur) and Livide are taking the helm does offer some extreme intrigue. That doesn’t quite work because of the gap between the shadow’s legs. It looks more like Sagrada Familia than a chainsaw to me.
Perhaps the major reason to be excited about this project is that Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury are directing. They made a big splash – a red, sticky one at that – with their debut feature, L’Interieur, or Inside, and followed up in fine style with Livide. Last year’s Among the Living was less consistent, but still featured a series of interesting images and a few gripping sequences between the less compelling stretches.

After horrifying and enthralling us in equal measure with their debut feature Inside, French filmmakers Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury are now set to bring their unique sensibilities to a more mainstream project – Leatherface, a prequel to Tobe Hooper’s 1974 slasher classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre that will chart the origins of the titular killer.
Millenium Films has struggled to turn the Texas Chainsaw property into a bankable franchise, and the studio’s seventh attempt, 2013’s Texas Chainsaw 3D, didn’t seem to know whether or not it wanted to be a gruesome, full-blooded horror pic or a more tongue-in-cheek entry. As a result, it succeeded at being neither. With this prequel, however, Millenium has a chance to hit the reset button and launch a new franchise around everyone’s favorite chainsaw-wielding psycho.

Julian Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (Inside, Livide) were on a "short list" of directors being considered just a few weeks back, but now Bloody-Disgusting can confirm that they indeed landed the job.

It’s a second go around the alphabet of fear with the debut of The ABCs of Death 2 as part of this years Celluloid Screams film festival. 2012′s first installment – an anthology of 26 stories, each representing a letter of the alphabet – was the very definition of a mixed bag, with (sadly) the bad often outweighing the good. However, given that the good was Very good I still held out hope that this sequel would live up to the expectations and potential that the format has.
Thankfully this time round the good outweighs the bad, although surprisingly there are some disappointing segments from directors whose work I’ve enjoyed; and whose feature work has been hailed as some of the best in...

Though Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo's 2011 film Livide (review) hasn't yet been released here in the States, an American remake is nevertheless in some form of development.
Over the weekend The Pact director Nicholas McCarthy made the surprising revelation that he was recently attached to direct. In an interview with Complex about his latest film, At the Devil's Door, now available through VOD outlets, the filmmaker opened up about his planned third feature, expressing that he's a big time fan of Livide and was very excited about the possibility of being at the helm for the remake.
"It was never announced that I was attached to it, but I was sure that it was going to be my third feature," revealed McCarthy. "That was the movie, though, where I realized that you can never be sure about anything."
"I’m learning that all of those cliches are true. The...

Aux yeux des vivants
Written and Directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury
France, 2014
Aux yeux des vivants is the newest film from the French extremist duo Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury. Their best known film, À l’intérieur, ushered their misanthropic and violent vision to genre fests across the world and became a much discussed entry in the new brand of horror and genre cinema emerging from France. Ignoring the film’s tenuous political commentary, it is transgressive in more interesting ways than American “torture porn” of the time. For better or for worse, the film is an assault on both the senses and sensibilities of even the most weathered horror fan, and puts into question our attraction to a genre that has so much potential to transgress and yet more often serves to pacify. Their follow-up film Livide was far less seen, and divided audiences far less on...

Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo the duo behind the profoundly disturbing Inside and the critically acclaimed Livide are returning for Among the Living a quasicoming of age horror tale. Weve got a look at the first images to land online. The film is said to boast a similar vibe to Stand By Me and It both of which are Stephen King penned tales that pit groups of youngsters at the foreground of the story.

Unlimited Global Academy is an evening of work directed by the British visual artist Rachel Gadsden and born of the notion of "invisible trauma". Handicapped by spinal problems and fast-diminishing sight, Gadsden has been working with a group of HIV-positive South African township dwellers who use art to explore their condition. She made contact with the group after visiting the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge and seeing a "bodymap" created by the painter Nondumiso Hlwele, who is one of the group.
This work, a graphic self-portrait illustrating the battle between the HIV virus and antiretroviral drugs, was the starting point for the evening's live performance event, Alchemy, created by the choreographer Athina Vahla. Alongside Gadsden, the piece features Freddie Opoku-Addaie, a contemporary dancer well known to UK audiences, and Sarah Chin, a working NHS physician who also trained in dance.
The work opens with Chin's entrance.

The French-language horror film Livide, directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury (Inside, originally A L'Interieur), will be remade in an English-language version, according to an unconfirmed report by Deadline. Dimension Films acquired U.S. distribution rights to Livid last summer, ahead of the film's premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. While Dimension has not yet announced any plans to release Livid, either theatrically or on home video, French distributor Snd Films has set Doug Davison and Robert Léger to produce a remake. David Birke, who has a couple of real-life serial killer thrillers (Freeway Killer, Gacy) among his credits, has been hired to write the script. Davison is a remake specialist, a former partner of Roy Lee in Vertigo Entertainment before the two went...

Even though the French film from Inside filmmakers Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo Livide (aka Livid) hasn't even seen the light of day here in the States, that's not stopping Hollywood from dishing out a remake!
Deadline reports that French distributor Snd Films is moving forward with an English language remake of Livid, and they’ve set David Birke to write the script and Doug Davison of Quadrant Pictures and Robert Léger to produce it. Davison’s genre credits include The Strangers and the upcoming remake of Oldboy at Mandate Pictures.
The film revolves around a young home nursing aide who works in a remote country estate and discovers that her comatose patient may have hidden her fortune somewhere in the house. Alexandre Aja is directing the film adaptation of Joe Hill‘s Horns from a script written by Scott Bunin. It is hoped Horns will be released next summer by Mandalay Pictures. “Mandalay is packaging the project and is in the middle of securing financing. The goal is to have Aja direct the movie in late spring or early summer 2012″.
The official description of Horns:
Ignatius Perrish spent the night drunk and doing terrible things. He woke up the next morning with a thunderous hangover, a raging headache . . . and a pair of horns growing from his temples.
At first Ig thought the horns were a hallucination, the product of a mind damaged by rage and grief. He had spent the last year in a lonely, private purgatory, following the death of his beloved, Merrin Williams, who was raped and murdered under inexplicable circumstances. A mental breakdown would have been the most natural thing in the world.

Supernatural yarns set inside sprawling mansions are amongst my favorites, due in part to my obsession with the film “Burnt Offerings” when I was a kid. When I learned that “Inside” directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo were piecing together their dark house flick, I knew it had the potential to be something special. And if the trailer for “Livide” is to be believed, it’s extremely possible that the filmmakers have yet another cinematic winner on their hands. By the way — If you haven’t seen “Inside” (aka “À l’intérieur”), do yourself a favor and seek it out. Seriously. It’s pretty freaky stuff. For the uninformed, a handy synopsis: It’s young Lucy’s first day as a trainee in-house careworker. She visits Mrs Jessel, an old woman who lies in cerebral coma, by herself, in her large desolate house. Learning by accident that Mrs Jessel, a former dance teacher of repute,...

After “Inside” became the international sensation that it did, horror fans have been dying for more French horror. More specifically, horror fans have been dying for a new film from the duo of directors(Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury), responsible for bringing us Inside. The film is titled “Livide”, or “Livid” for us Americans, and it’s been doing the festival circuit, receiving some pretty good buzz. Not much has been known about the film until recently, and now they’ve unleashed the international trailer for the masses to consume. Below you’ll find that trailer. It Is in French, with a complete lack of English subtitles, but you can get a feel for how the movie is going to play out. I wasn’t aware that it was going to be a “haunting” type of film. I’m not sure if that makes me more excited, or less. Either way,...
