It not a blockbuster MLK weekend but indies are out in force with The Brutalist continuing to surprise, The Substance adding theaters and Nosferatu, A Complete Unknown and Babygirl holding at nos. 7, 8 and 10 at the domestic box office.
Robert Eggers’ vampire fest from Focus Features had a $4.3 million weekend with a cume of $89.4 million for Nosferatu; Searchlight Pictures Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown starring Timothee Chalamet is at $57.6 million after a $3.8 million weekend; and A24’s psycho-sexual Nicole Kidman-starrer Babygirl is estimating $2 million and a $25.4 million cume. All cumes are for the three-day weekend. Monday is the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.
Meanwhile, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, also from A24, grossed $1.98 million for the three-day weekend and $2.4 million for the four-day MLK holiday frame in a big expansion to 338 screens – up from $1.39 million on 68 screens last weekend. This is discouraging. Despite a better than expected showing by “One of Them Days” (Sony), with $11.6 million in three days for the $14 million, Issa Rae-produced R-rated comedy, this was a pathetic box office for a weekend ahead of MLK Day.
The mid-January holiday usually kickstarts the new year, with grosses pre-Covid usually $150 million total or higher at lower ticket prices. This year? Around $77 million. That’s lower than any year unadjusted for inflation this century, with attendance totals about half of the standard before 2021.
It wouldn’t have helped a lot, but “Wolf Man,” meant to build on the Universal Monsters reboot started by “The Invisible Man” five years ago, with $10.5 million came in substantially below its expected opening of up to $20 million.

Also hurting was the delay in Oscar nominations, originally scheduled for last Friday, now delayed a week.

Singer-Actresses Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez might compete for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Both Grande and Gomez have leveled up their acting careers with two notable roles this year. These two are included in our predictions for the category, alongside some of the other best performances of the year.

FandomWire’s other nominees include an Oscar winner in the category, a rising star in dramatic roles, and a Star Wars actress. Fans will also see a surprising snub in here and we have the right reason to believe that Academy voters aren’t too keen to nominate her.

What’s taking the 10th spot in Best Picture? And who’s grabbing the fifth spot in Best Actress? Gold Derby experts and editors Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng make their final 2025 Oscar nominations predictions in all 23 categories on Awards Magnet.
The delayed Producers Guild of America Awards nominations threw us all for a loop on Thursday with a surprise nomination for September 5 alongside the expected Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, A Real Pain, The Substance, and Wicked. Sing Sing, which remains in ninth place in the Best Picture odds, was Awol, a day after it collected three BAFTA nominations in all of its longlisted categories. The A24 drama’s run has been up and down all season, but is the PGA snub a death knell? Especially since September 5 has also underperformed?

By now we are used to seeing Actors on Actors every awards season, but one aspect of many of the performances that stand out in the best films of 2024 has been seeing actors as actors. Whether it be Golden Globe winners Demi Moore and Sebastian Stan, who in “The Substance” and “A Different Man,” respectively, both play performers whose brains have been tied in knots by society’s perception of their appearance, to “Sing Sing” stars Colman Domingo and Clarence Maclin, and “Ghostlight” star Keith Kupferer all giving Independent Spirit Award-nominated turns in films about men who find healing through the craft of acting on stage. Though each applicable film is executed so differently, they do all point to the creative profession being increasingly compelling subject matter.
“People are drawn to actors because there is this mystery around how do you tap into that thing? How do you do it?...

After the release of 2014’s Annie, in which Cameron Diaz played Miss Hannigan, Diaz took a break from acting. By 2018, when she reunited with her co-stars from The Sweetest Thing for an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she described herself as “retired,” and stayed that way for the next several years — until now. Today sees the release of Back in Action, a straight-to-Netflix feature film that lured Diaz back onto a film set. At an event in October, Diaz explained that she had stepped away from her professional career because she had to “reclaim” her life and that what she was “passionate” about at the time was building her family, but that she agreed to Back in Action to re-team with her Annie co-star: “I couldn’t say no to Jamie.”
I accept that as her official reason, but having watched the movie, I now think she took the part...

The Best Film Ensemble category at the Screen Actors Guild Awards can occasionally be a tough one to predict. Gold Derby’s pundits erroneously thought that 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood would prevail over Parasite, while 2016’s Hidden Figures was correctly chosen by only one of the editors, experts, or top 24 users — combined. Well, this year’s top race looks to be less of a head-scratcher and more of a coronation, as Gold Derby’s 2025 SAG Awards predictions overwhelmingly favor Wicked to win with 17/10 odds. Talk about popular!
The SAG nominations were announced on Jan. 8, with Wicked leading all other films with five bids: Best Ensemble, Best Actress (Cynthia Erivo), Best Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande), Best Supporting Actor (Jonathan Bailey), and Best Stunt Ensemble. Universal Pictures’ big-budget adaptation of the beloved Broadway stage musical is not expected to win any other trophies with the acting guild, though that’s par for the course,...

For me the year of 2024 was a challenging one. Between being in hospital or housebound at home, I could not attend any press shows or even visit my local cinemas. However, I have tried to catch up with some of the more important films of the year. I have missed many I would like to have seen, but time marches on and I have made the best of a bad situation. If it was a tough year for me, it also seems to have brought many films dealing with various difficulties to our cinema screens.
Take, for instance, Edward Berger’s Conclave. What could be more challenging than the selection of a new Pope? Ralph Fiennes in this role is torn between tradition and scandals concerning the possible candidates. Then there was Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, where a Mexican cartel leader is forced to disappear...

Even Margaret Qualley can’t get the haunting visuals of “The Substance” out of her mind.
The actress told IndieWire that more than two years after wrapping production on Coralie Fargeat’s Golden Globes-winning satirical horror film, she still has “nightmares” about a certain gory scene — and it’s not that bloody ending. Instead, the sequence in which Sue (Qualley) starts to fall apart quite literally ahead of her big New Year’s Eve hosting spot is what lives rent-free in Qualley’s subconscious.
“Actually, just the night before last, I had a replica nightmare of when Sue loses her teeth, and she’s freaking out in front of the mirror,” Qualley said. “I’m one of those people who’s definitely had that nightmare before where you lose your teeth, but then I had the literal scene: I was looking in the mirror with only my two teeth. Annually, Rotten Tomatoes hands out Golden Tomatoes to the best-reviewed movies and TV series from the past year.
Previous winners include Oppenheimer, The Last of Us, Top Gun: Maverick, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and House of the Dragon, but Dune: Part Two has reigned supreme this time.
Shōgun largely dominated the TV side, though there were noteworthy wins for both The Penguin and X-Men '97. Unfortunately, neither Deadpool & Wolverine nor Agatha All Along have received any love, even in the newly created "Fan Favorite Movies" category.
The winners and nominees are determined by an adjusted score formula, which is a weighted ranking that compensates for the variation in the number of reviews when comparing movies or TV shows within a specified time frame.

A Different Man, The Substance, Wolf Man… Body horror films have seen a sudden surge in Hollywood. We take a look at why that might be.
The human body has long been violated, penetrated and torn apart on the silver screen. Horror has always thrived on gore and the multiple ways you can make people suffer, especially physically. The early 2000s even saw the rise of ‘torture porn’, a genre which focuses primarily on extensive, almost silly gore.
2024 was a particularly strong year for body horror with both The Substance and A Different Man making their ways into UK cinemas. The Substance, which we awarded the full five stars in our review, is a strong contender at this year’s Oscars, especially after Demi Moore took home one of the Best Actress awards at the Golden Globes. With the announcement of the PGA Awards 2025 nominations, just about every major Oscar precursor has shown its cards in terms of what it thinks deserves a nomination slot in Best Picture. And ultimately, there has been less of a consensus this year.
For instance, had you asked the majority of prognosticators the day before PGA nominations dropped, they would probably tell you that Paramount Pictures’ “September 5” is out of the race. But given how the PGA Awards predicted the full Best Picture lineup and winner last year,...

New year, new building permit application extension request (until March 1) from the owners of the closed Cinerama Dome and its adjacent Arclight Hollywood complex. That’s a sign that there is at least a pulse at the location, which combined an iconic standalone theater and 14 state-of-the-art stadium screens.
There is nothing specific to report on the status of any partial or complete reopening plans. But in the event it does happen, the theater will be in a challenging position to return as the dominant one it was at its height.
When Arclight Hollywood opened in 2002, it immediately set the standard for innovative presentation. Reserved stadium seating was radical at the time. Its lack of advertising on screens was a significant change. Staff introducing films, lobby amenities including a book store, and now-standard director and cast appearances all quickly made it a destination theater.

The nominations announcement of the PGA Awards 2025 made for a tough morning for the “Nickel Boys” and “Sing Sing” Oscar campaigns in particular.
Because the Producers Guild of America uses the same system as the Academy to determine its nominees for Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures — a preferential ballot with 10 slots— it is seen overall as the most accurate precursor for Best Picture. In fact, its nominees completely mirrored what the Best Picture nominees were in 2024.
Have things really changed that much between now and December, when the winners of the AFI Awards were announced? In recent years that awards body has been almost as accurate at predicting the final 10 Best Picture nominees, often only leaving out the international titles. For example, the American Film Institute had “May December” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” last year instead of eventual nominees “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest,...

The Producers Guild of America, one of the most reliable predictors of success in the Oscars’ Best Picture category, has nominated Oscar favorites “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Perez” and “Wicked” for its top feature film award, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.
Other nominees in the category are “Dune: Part Two,” “A Real Pain,” “September 5” and “The Substance.”
While last year’s PGA nominations included a record three films directed by women and three predominantly not in English,”The Substance” was this year’s only female-directed nominee and “Emilia Perez” its only non-English one.
The nominations include most of the top contenders for the Oscar for Best Picture, with the indies “Nickel Boys” and “Sing Sing” being the highest-profile films that were left out. “September 5,” the European-made film about the terrorist attacks at the Munich Olympics in 1972, is the biggest...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) unveiled its 2025 Awards nominees on Thursday, honoring an eclectic slate of films poised to dominate this year’s Oscar race.
Among the 10 nominees for the coveted Darryl F. Zanuck Award for outstanding producer of theatrical motion pictures are Sean Baker’s poignant dramedy “Anora,” Brady Corbet’s meticulously crafted historical epic “The Brutalist,” Edward Berger’s religious thriller “Conclave,” Jacques Audiard’s genre-bending musical “Emilia Pérez” and Jon M. Chu’s glittering adaptation of “Wicked.”
Perhaps the most unexpected entry in this year’s list is Tim Fehlbaum’s indie thriller “September 5.” The high-stakes dystopian drama, acquired by Paramount Pictures after generating buzz at Venice and Telluride, edged out high-profile contenders like RaMell Ross’ “Nickel Boys” and Greg Kwedar’s prison drama “Sing Sing.” The nod for “September 5” marks a significant moment for the underdog film, which now finds itself in the best picture conversation.

When the 2025 Oscars nominations are announced on Jan. 23 at 5:30 a.m. Pt, expect Emilia Pérez to be on top.
According to Gold Derby predictions, the Netflix musical dramedy is poised to receive 11 bids — more than any other contender — including Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña). That would be two fewer than last year’s nominations leader Oppenheimer at 13, but on par with 2022’s Everything Everywhere All at Once at 11 — both of which won Best Picture.
Close behind with 10 forecasted noms is A24’s The Brutalist, starring Best Actor frontrunner Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor who tries to live out the American Dream in the 1940s and 1950s. Expect nominations for Best Director (Brady Corbet), Best Supporting Actress (Felicity Jones), and Best Supporting Actor (Guy Pearce), per Gold Derby odds.

The wildfires currently raging in Los Angeles, California have caused unprecedented destruction since they first kicked up on January 7, 2025. A little over a week later, the CalFire website says that, to date, 24 people have died, 40,660 acres have burned, and over 12,300 structures have been destroyed. Residents of the city are in both shock and mourning as they face an uncertain future of rebuilding and further calamity -- because these fires are still not fully contained, and new fires could start at any moment.
In the midst of all of this, the film industry to which the city has been home for over a century is wearily moving forward. Movies must be made, released and promoted to ensure that this awful start to 2025 isn't compounded by a significant box office decline. It's a terrible necessity. But are the Oscars a necessity?

Usually, the arrival of Oscar prognostication season is both a blessing and a curse. Namely, it gives us an opportunity to take a playful tour through what passes for the best in cinema in an alternate universe even as we’re forced to reckon with just how all-encompassingly market-tested and gatekeeper-checked the entire annual exercise has become.

The hit horror movie The Substance took audiences by storm and recently earned lead actress Demi Moore her first Golden Globe at the 2025 Awards. A dark satirical critique of Hollywood’s misogyny toward aging, the film follows a 50-year-old TV star who gets fired for being ‘too old‘. Desperate, she turns to a black-market drug, The Substance, which temporarily transforms her into a younger version of herself – until the cure becomes a nightmare.

Blumhouse Pictures, the kings of horror at the box office for the past decade, didn’t make a big splash at the box office in 2024. This year looks to be much different, starting this weekend with Leigh Whannell’s “Wolf Man.”
According to exhibitors and rival distributors, “Wolf Man” is projected for a 3-day opening in the high teens. With MLK Day included, the Universal release is expected to earn a 4-day opening above $20 million.
This would be a higher opening than any of Blumhouse’s launches in 2024, as their last January release, “Night Swim,” and their September remake of “Speak No Evil” both opened to around $11 million. “Speak No Evil” was Blumhouse’s top film last year with $36.9 million domestic and $75.7 million worldwide.
To be clear, none of Blumhouse’s 2024 films were flops, easily clearing their production budgets which never exceeded $15 million. But 2024 was also only the second year...

The State of the Race
Though there are still nominations being announced here and there, the recent arrival of BAFTA and DGA nominations, plus certain films doing very well at the Golden Globes, can point to a few contenders that (for now) feel like a lock for a Best Director nomination at the 2025 Oscars.
For instance, “The Brutalist” helmer Brady Corbet was the big winner at the January ceremony, and has consistently been recognized in just about any Best Director category he’s eligible for. His narrative of taking initiative and...

After a couple of postponements in consideration of the ongoing wildfires in California, the Writers Guild of America announced on Wednesday the nominations for the 2025 WGA Awards honoring film, TV, and several other mediums.
As always, the guild’s film nominations come with the caveat that any script not written by a guild member or under a WGA collective bargaining agreement was deemed ineligible, so major screenplay Oscar contenders like “The Brutalist” and “The Substance” were left out. What was nominated in their stead is the real indicator of some titles that are still not out of the awards race just yet.

In Best Original Screenplay, Anora and Challengers are up against A Real Pain, Civil War, and My Old Ass. The Best Adapted Screenplay lineup features A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Hit Man, Nickel Boys, and Wicked.
The nominations were announced Wednesday, a week after the guild postponed its scheduled Jan. 9 announcement due to the Los Angeles wildfires.
As previously reported, dozens of scripts — including several top Oscar hopefuls — were ineligible for consideration this year. A screenplay is ineligible if it’s produced outside of the WGA’s collective bargaining agreement or written by a non-union member.
The ineligible adapted scripts were Golden Globe champ Conclave (by Peter Straughan), Emilia Pérez (by Jacques Audiard), I’m Still Here (by Walter Salles), Inside Out 2 (by Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein with a...

“Anora,” “A Real Pain,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Wicked” and “Nickel Boys” are among the films that have been nominated by the Writers Guild of America in the feature film category, the WGA West and WGA East announced on Wednesday.
In the Original Screenplay category, “Anora” and “A Real Pain” were nominated alongside “Challengers,” “Civil War” and “My Old Ass.” In Adapted Screenplay, “A Complete Unknown,” “Nickel Boys” and “Wicked” will be up against “Dune: Part Two” and “Hit Man.”
Eligibility for the Writers Guild Awards is restricted to screenplays that were written under the guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement or under related agreements from affiliated international guilds. That rule made many of the year’s likeliest Oscar nominees ineligible for Writers Guild nominations, including the original scripts “The Brutalist,” “The Substance,” “Hard Truths,” “September 5” and “All We Imagine as Light,” as well as the adaptations “Conclave,” “Sing Sing,”“Emilia Pérez” and “I’m Still Here.

Warning: Spoilers ahead from the Landman season finale!
Landman, the latest hit series from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, came to an end with its shocking first season finale on Jan. 12. Fans are still reeling from the evens of the finale, which saw the death of a major character and some big changes that could be in store should Paramount+ renew the breakout drama for a second season.
In the season finale, Jon Hamm's character Monty Miller died due to heart complications from having a heart attack and too many bypass surgeries. Monty's death was confirmed by Landman co-creator Christian Wallace as well as by Hamm in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, in which he explains that additional acting commitments didn't allow more than a one-season deal.
But Hamm's absence and the shuffle of power at M-Tex with Tommy taking over will make room for another character to receive...

Seven years went from the time when director Coralie Fargeat made her feature directorial debut with a very cool revenge movie that was appropriately titled Revenge – you can read our 8/10 review of the film at This Link – and when she came back with an “explosive feminist take on body horror” called The Substance, which stars Demi Moore (Ghost) and Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). Fargeat’s second movie was worth the wait (you can read our 9/10 review Here), and has been streaming on the Mubi service since Halloween. Qualley wore some major prosthetic makeup for some sequences in the film – and during a new interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, she revealed that it took a year for her skin to recover from the irritation caused by those prosthetics.
The film is gory, but also humorous, and it’s quite a wild ride. Here’s the...

The BAFTAs are upon us, and this year's nominations are a return to the institution's 2000s penchant for precursor-ism. By that I mean that its choices are keeping in tune with the Oscar favorites in most races. That's unsurprising considering that, for the first time since 2020, the British Academy did away with juries and committees in the acting and directing categories. Many may rejoice at this populist comeback, but I miss the more unexpected choices we enjoyed during those years. In any case, Conclave leads the nomination tally with 12 mentions, while Emilia Pérez is a close runner-up with 11, including a Supporting Actress double dip. Next comes The Brutalist with nine nods, Dune: Part Two, Wicked and Anora have seven, A Complete Unknown six, while The Substance and Nosferatu each nab five…...

The 2025 BAFTA nominations had its share of snubs and surprises, some less so than others (Denzel Washington missing again is just par for the course now). The final televised precursor — and an industry one to boot — made the acting categories even messier while ostensibly taking other contenders out of the running. Here’s where we’re at with all four races post-bafta nominations.
Best Actor
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, SAG and BAFTA nominations: Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave)
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG nominations: Daniel Craig (Queer)
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and BAFTA nominations: Hugh Grant (Heretic)
Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations: Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice)
Assuming the top four are in — as many have all season, and the quartet has not missed a beat — that leaves one spot up for grabs. Craig has occupied that spot in the odds all season long,...
