The Menippus of the series is based on an actual historical figure, Menippus of Gadara. He was a Syrian freedman (freed slave) who became a Cynic philosopher and satirist. He is credited with creating the genre of Menippean satire, which satirized mental attitudes and traditional religious beliefs. Menippus' works are lost, but part of his style survives in the works of his imitators Marcus Terentius Varro and Lucian of Samosata.
