For his first time out with the “Star Wars” universe, Rian Johnson populated “The Last Jedi” with a slew of new and old friends and foes, including several creature standouts: the adorable Porgs, the elegant Vulptices, the majestic Falthiers, the sinister Snoke, and the return of Master Yoda.

“To the extent that I deal with visual effects, since I don’t have the technical know how, it’s on the design side,” Johnson said. “And I like simplicity of design. You don’t ever want the audience using unnecessary brain power figuring out what they’re looking at. Ossie Davis’ children are inspiring a new wave of activists through their father’s legacy.
The film, television and Broadway actor, director, poet, playwright and civil rights activist who died in 2005 at the age of 87, would have celebrated his 100th birthday on Monday (Dec. 18). In honor of the centennial milestone, Nora Davis Day, Guy Davis and Dr. Hasna Muhammad Davis (the three children of Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee) are highlighting their father’s “contributions to the struggle.”
“We know that if Dad and Mom were around now, they would want to be a part of this discourse around civil rights. This renewed activism, the challenging of the status quo, and augmenting the voices that are truly marginalized,” Hasna told Et during a phone interview on Friday. “Since he’s not here, we do have this opportunity to include his and Mom's voices, so that we can help attribute and provide historical context, and encourage the vehicle...

One of the biggest headlines to emerge in the wake of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” opening in theaters has been the polarizing fan response to the Rian Johnson-directed sequel. For whatever reason, the mystery of “The Last Jedi” backlash continues to grow, so much so that Disney has felt compelled to defend it.

A24’s “The Disaster Artist” and “Lady Bird” led the pack of specialized successes, again landing in the weekend’s Top 10 chart. Both had to hold off the usual pre-holiday dip as well as the massive draw across all audiences for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
A total of eight recent limited releases expanded this weekend –all their theaters combined add up to about the same number of theaters as “The Last Jedi,” but it grossed 22 times as much as the $10-million total of those eight films combined.
To a large extent grosses this week are gravy on top of past totals and more importantly a build-up to the most lucrative time of the year for adult moviegoing. That starts in earnest on Christmas Day. More viable titles are competing than most years, and not all will be optimally available. But distributors hope to regain their momentum with the return...

When A Christmas Story goes live Sunday, Jane Krakowski will be taking on a role she loved in the movie as a kid.
“I play Miss Shields, who is Ralphie’s teacher, and I love the actress who played her in the original movie,” Krakowski tells People of Tedde Moore. “I loved how much she was utilized in Ralphie’s fantasy life — it was one of my favorite parts of the movie — and they have expanded that a bit in the musical telling.”
The live version of the 1983 holiday classic will also expand on its signature line — “You’ll shoot your eye out!

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” may be one of the most critically acclaimed entries in the franchise (IndieWire gave it an A- and called it it the most satisfying “Star Wars” film in decades), but it’s passionately dividing fans in a way most “Star Wars” films don’t. Unlike the universally beloved reception to “The Force Awakens,” “The Last Jedi” isn’t every fan’s up of tea.

Technology is a wonderful tool. It lets us communicate with friends and family at great distances without using our voices, it lets us spy on our neighbors without leaving the living room couch, and now it has written some Harry Potter.
The people over at Botnik Studios programmed a predictive keyboard with all seven Harry Potter books written by J.K. Rowling. From there they were able to craft this glorious chapter from the soon-to-be classic Harry Potter and the Portrait of What Looked Like a Large Pile of Ash.
Now, the exact method they did for selecting words, I’m not sure since it will load 18 options for you, so maybe they went 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. or maybe they just hit 1 over and over again. No matter what it is hilarious to read. You can play around with the predictive keyboard they used on two pages: one for narration and one for dialogue.

Comedian and actor Lil Rel Howery has barely had time to catch his breath since his career recently took off, first with the breakout role in Get Out as Rod Williams, a Tsa agent so in tune with his “tingles” that he tries to convince best friend Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) -- a black man dating a white woman, played by Allison Williams -- that his girlfriend’s family is racist. Later, he was back on TV with the (sadly) now-canceled The Carmichael Show and season two of HBO’s Insecure.
Released in January, the Jordan Peele horror-comedy became a box office hit. Now, as the year closes out, Get Out has become an awards season frontrunner, named Gotham Independent Film Awards’ Best Feature and listed among the National Board of Review’s top 10 films and earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.

December. Cinema’s recognized “Awards Season” where studios slate projects that vie for Oscar’s golden attention. Typically where an “entertainer” like Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle would become buried – but what an injustice that’d be. I, as a responsible critic, won’t let you skip on one of the year’s wildest cinematic excursions. See Lady Bird with your mom, embrace the peachiness of Call Me By Your Name, but when you need a break from deeper affairs of the filmmaking heart, lighten moods with Jake Kasdan’s dynamite sequel-reboot. Danger is the name of this revamped 90s game, hilarity keeping pace with animalistic enthusiasm.

At least so far, the DC Extended Universe (Dceu) has been defined by record-breaking highs (Wonder Woman) and crushing lows (Suicide Squad). But 2016 was a particularly difficult year for Warner’s fledgling franchise.
Off the back of Man of Steel, the studio readied its titanic, crowd-pleasing flagship, Batman V Superman. Because it involved two of the biggest names in comic book history, Dawn of Justice was championed as the cinematic equivalent of a slam-dunk leading up to release – one that would easily muscle its way into Hollywood’s exclusive billion-dollar club. The end result, however, was a muddled, CG-laden mess. And don’t even get us started on Suicide Squad.

We're rapidly approaching the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and, without giving too much away, a whole lot from the movie has been making its way online to hype up the latest adventure in a galaxy far, far away. We know, at least in vague terms, a lot of what we're going to see in the movie. And now it looks like we can expect to see some pretty awesome-looking snowtroopers that are reminiscent of The Empire Strikes Back.
A new photo from Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been released online, revealing that the snowtroopers are back. And this time, there's a whole lot of them. That means we're going to see the First Order taking care of business in a very cold enviroment. And while it's white, it won't be snow. Though, perhaps they'll run into those new crystalline foxes everyone is so fascinated with. The...

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are engaged! While Clarence House confirmed that the pair are set to wed in Spring 2018, there are a few complexities when it comes to the big day.
Not since Edward VIII famously abdicated the throne to marry twice-divorced American Wallis Simpson in 1936 has an heir to the throne wed an American — and like Simpson, Markle is divorced. But a lot has changed in the decades since then, and Harry and Meghan are facing a far more relaxed monarchy. What’s more, their wedding won’t be a carbon copy of Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s elaborate 2011 nuptials.

A couple of ghosts from Mr. Robot seasons past reappeared this week, as Elliot and company dealt with the fallout from last week’s tragedy.
Hey, remember Trenton and Mobley? Those two fsociety hackers who ran away to Arizona last season, where Elliot’s old cellmate Leon found them? They’re still alive, but just barely: Leon cuts their roommate’s throat before driving them off to a remote, Breaking Bad-esque spot in the desert, where he has them dig a grave. Debating superhero films has the potential of causing a nuclear holocaust. Fandoms are so passionate about these characters and movies that they’ll fight you to the death – or at least into an instant block on Twitter.
No matter what the critics say (and who really cares what those losers think, right?), many flicks develop a cult-like following regardless of bad reviews or poor word of mouth. This is what we’re here to discuss today: the divisive comic book movies of recent years. Before you ask, please note that we’re excluding Justice League from this list as it’s too early to tell where it falls on the spectrum.
This is all a matter of opinion, of course and as always, if you agree or disagree with any of our listed picks – or feel like having a massive rant about these movies – please take to the comments section down below.

A Ciambra is a pretty amazing movie…it reminds me somewhat of Gemorrah, also filmed in Calabria and centering around a young man who wants to break with a tradition of crime. Jonas Carpignano, the director whose previous film Mediterranea was huge success in Cannes, said that was a compliment as it was one of his favorite movies.Actor Koudous Seihon with Jonas Carpignano
Jonas Carpignano was also so charming and available to us all the night it screened at Wme, the agency which represents him!
The movie saddened me by its portrayal of gypsies, but was fascinating at the same time.
In A Ciambra, a small Romani (as the gypsies of Italy are labeled) community in Calabria, Pio Amato is desperate to grow up fast. At 14, he drinks, smokes and is one of the few to easily slide between the region’s factions — the local Italians, the African refugees and his fellow Romani.

The FX series American Horror Story often plays on our most basic fears, but for its seventh installment, American Horror Story: Cult, it took things one step further, to exploring the level of intense anxiety many have experienced since the presidential election. No matter what side you’re on personally, it’s easy to relate to and sympathize with feeling lost or confused or afraid, and when that’s intentionally used to very effectively induce fear, it can be more frightening than any supernatural entity. Kim Zolciak will not stay silent.

When a fan asked the 39-year-old reality star about her response to her dad’s comments, she tweeted: “It's disgusting and sad. My parents haven't been a part of my life or my kids for six years. They have never met Kash or our dog. I do know they will do anything for a dollar.”

Actor best known as a Bond girl in You Only Live Twice
No matter what roles she played in films, on stage or on television throughout the rest of her career, the German actor Karin Dor, who has died aged 79, was labelled a Bond girl. Her induction as a member of this exclusive group of beautiful women who have provided James Bond with a love interest came in You Only Live Twice (1967), in which she met a memorably grisly end.
Dor played the seductive, titian-haired Helga Brandt, an operative of the criminal organisation Spectre ordered to kill 007 (Sean Connery), who has been conveniently tied up for her. “I’ve got you now,” she states ambivalently. “Well, enjoy yourself!” he replies. She slaps his face and threatens him with a surgical knife, which he wrestles from her, using it to cut the strap on her black dress.

Mubi is showing Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's The Small Back Room (1949), The Tales of Hoffmann (1951) and Michael Powell's Peeping Tom (1960) in November and December, 2017 in the United States in the series Powell & Pressburger: Together and Apart. The story goes that when they were casting their first flat-out masterpiece together, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger sent a letter to an actress outlining a manifesto of their production company, called "the Archers." At the time, the Archers was freshly incorporated, with Powell and Pressburger sharing all credit for writing, directing, and producing, and their manifesto had five points. Point one was to ensure that they provided their financial backers with "a profit, not a loss," which may raise eyebrows among those who are used to manifestos burning with anti-capitalist fire—but then, in a system like commercial cinema, profitability buys freedom.

The Duffer Brothers have shared a little information with Yahoo about what they are thinking for Season 3 of the hit show Stranger Things. Potential spoilers ahead for Season 2, so be warned!
First, they know where they want the third season to end. However, they’re not sure how they want to get there. This is completely normal, and they’ve even commented before about how even character arcs have changed from when they first thought of their plans to when they actually shot the scenes. Ross Duffer further explains:
.We have an end goal; we know where we want to go[.] We’re not quite sure how long it will take to get there, but we do have a plan. And some of it, it’s just because Season 2, we just came into it with so many ideas, and so many of them have been kicked further down the road.

Before season 2 of Stranger Things aired (our review), and all of our Halloween plans were quickly shelved, the Duffer Brothers outlined their masterplan that would see the Netflix phenom reach its conclusion after four or five seasons. And it seems that end goal is still very much in place.
