It’s difficult to find an aspect of popular culture that Hugh Hefner didn’t influence during his long, remarkable life. Spanning journalism, television, film, fashion and, of course, sexuality, his impact on music is one of the least heralded aspects of his legacy. Over the course of two seasons, Hefner used his weekly syndicated variety show, Playboy After Dark, as a platform for a broad spectrum of artists.

Early on in Penny Dreadful’s third season premiere, Sir Malcolm, Ethan, the Creature and Vanessa appeared to be locked in a competition to see which of them could be the biggest Debbie Downer. Not that you could blame them, really.
Having just laid Sembene to rest, Sir Malcolm was in Zanzibar and eager to be “quit of the filthy place”; Ethan was being escorted across the New Mexico Territory by Rusk and what seemed like an inordinate number of marshals — even for the extradition of a werewolf; the Creature was stuck on a ship that was frozen in place in the Arctic; and,...

Excuse Whoopi Goldberg while she whips this out. “The View” maven Goldberg played the woman card in the most literal way during Thursday’s episode of the daytime talk show. After discussing presidential candidate Donald Trump’s accusation that his political rival, Hilary Clinton, benefits from “the woman’s card.” Borrowing from — Ok, outright lifting from, with citation — Washington Post writer Alexandra Petri’s article on the same topic on Wednesday, Goldberg held up her own woman card and rattled off its “benefits.” Also Read: Whoopi Goldberg to Donald Trump: 'I Ain't Going Nowhere, This Is My Country' (Video...

ITV’s website is reporting that new Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has said he has no plans to sell the in-demand duo of Roberto Soldado and Andros Townsend.
Soldado is being linked to AC Milan as a potential replacement for new Liverpool signing Mario Balotelli, while Andros Townsend is said to be wanted by both Queens Park Rangers – who he had a loan spell with two seasons ago and who are managed by former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp – and Pochettino’s former club Southampton – where he is being touted as a potential makeweight in Spurs’ pursuit of Morgan Schneiderlin.
Soldado is injured for tomorrow’s Europa League qualifying round second leg tie at home to Ael Limassol and is not in the Spurs squad for the match. This has led some people to believe he actually isn’t wanted, but Pochettino had this...

Despite reports from Italian news outlet Tuttomercato, as reported by the Mirror, Hatem Ben Arfa will not be leaving Newcastle United for Italian giants Inter Milan today.
Magpies fans have had to endure a poor transfer window once again – though the squad is in a far healthier position than some might happily concede – after the sale of Yohan Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this week, and the failure to bring in a replacement so far, and a departure for the hugely talented Ben Arfa would have been another major blow.
But according to both Miles Starforth of the Shields Gazette, and Peter Graves of Sky Sports, those rumours are unfounded, and Newcastle fans won’t be seeing the second high-profile departure of the week.

The longlist for the Best Song category in the Oscars has been announced – so what should make the cut?
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the longlist of songs for its Best Original Song Oscar in 2014, ahead of the nominations for the shortlist on January 14.
The list features 75 songs written for movies over the last year, with artists including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, U2, Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and M83 all making the grade. Pharrell is included for his hit Happy, currently in the top 5 of the UK charts, which appears in Despicable Me 2, and other animated films make up a large proportion of those selected: Epic, Turbo, The Croods, Planes, Escape From Planet Earth and Monsters University all also get a mention.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas remains confident that Gareth Bale won’t leave White Hart Lane in the summer.
The 23-year-old Welsh winger put in a man of the match performance yesterday, scoring both of Spurs’ goals in a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United to keep their Champions League pursuit going strong. His scintillating performance in a free forward role was simply breathtaking, and having notched up 15 goals this season, the world’s biggest and richest clubs such as Chelsea and Real Madrid are being more and more linked with a move for the player.
Villas-Boas however was keen to stress in the post-match interview with Sky Sports yesterday that losing Bale would be like Messi leaving Barcelona;
“Obviously, we have spoken about that at length and are not going to go through it again,” said the Portuguese. “Most teams have to hang on to their best players, Barcelona losing Messi would be a disaster,...

He said: “I’m making clear that I’m not going on loan to Wigan. I’m really happy in Liverpool.”

Sure, anyone can hold an album-listening party at some record label's headquarters or, to really mix it up, some swanky nightclub. But for Usher, that just wasn't enough. When he was looking for a way to debut tracks off Looking 4 Myself, out June 12, he found another way to spread the word.
Last month, Usher appeared in the off-Broadway show "Fuerza Bruta," in which he played the male lead, Running Man, for one night only. During the show, he played all his newest, shiniest tracks for lucky theatergoers. When MTV News spoke to him exclusively during rehearsals, he explained that his part in "Fuerza" provided the perfect pairing between the themes on his album and the visuals of the play.
