In the near future, crime is patrolled by a mechanized police force. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself.
When water is dumped on Deon to wake him up, Ninja is wearing a vest with "Bite Me Fanboy", and a stylized winged skull design on the back. This is a nod to the DC comics character Lobo, who often wears an almost identical vest.
Historically, when we look at evolution, it's not surprising that uh... Chappie's left turn... uh... happened.
Professor: It's too early to tell how this is all going to play out. I didn't believe that this would happen in my lifetime, but... but it is ...
With only one single physical guard key in existence that is required for reprogramming all of the Scout-type robots, and since it's only needed for reprogramming them and not operating them, Deon would have been extremely careful to have removed it from Chappie after his reprogramming and before his activation.
In the closing credits appears "Be Moved" in large font.
In an alternate ending, Chappie has an army in downtown then ends the footage of William Roberts.
