In a very competitive situation, NBC has landed Joe & Joe & Jane, a multi-camera comedy from writers-executive producers Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, with a pilot production commitment. I hear the 20th Century Fox TV-produced project also has a series penalty behind it to rank as one of the biggest comedy sales this season. Loosely based on the relationship between Port, Wiseman and Wiseman’s wife, Joe & Joe & Jane centers on a conflict-avoidant children’s book author caught in an ongoing tug of war between two needy, flawed people: his wife and his co-author/ best friend. It’s not about a couple, it’s about a trouple. Last season, another Port/Wiseman comedy with semi-autobiographical roots, spec Rebounding, which was inspired by Port’s real-life experiences, was picked up to pilot by Fox with Steve Levitan executive producing, Jason Winer directing and Will Forte starring. The year before, the duo also...

Jennie Garth has signed up to star in a new pilot for ABC Family. Village People will see Garth playing a career woman who adopts a baby, Deadline reports. Garth's character ends up taking care of both the baby and the child's biological mother, who is a teenager. Garth is probably best known for her role as Kelly Taylor in Beverly Hills, 90210 and the CW reboot 90210. Sadie Calvano, who recently worked on Fox's pilot Family Album, (more)...

Fox has reportedly dropped its pilot Family Album. The comedy, which starred Glee's Mike O'Malley, focused on a patriarch who took his family on holiday in an attempt to bond. The show was not picked up in May but Fox continued to develop it for midseason along with another comedy, Little In Common. However, Fox has now dropped Family Album, Deadline reports. The team behind the project initially envisaged each season taking place during a family vacation but the network reportedly asked the producers to turn it into a more traditional family show. Fox's single-camera comedy pilot Family Album is no longer in contention for midseason. Considered one of the hotter pilots at the network this past season, the half-hour, written by Joe Port and Joe Wiseman and directed by Shawn Levy, didn't get a series order but, along with another comedy pilot, Little In Common, was put in redevelopment for midseason consideration. The network ordered a pilot reshoot, which later morphed into filming a whole new episode/pilot. The project's original premise was to to have each season take place during a family vacation and the pilot reflected that. I hear that Fox ultimately found that premise too narrow and asked the creators to turn Family Album into a more traditional family show, with every episode focused on a different incident in the family's daily life, including one chronicling their vacation. The studio, 20th TV, which co-produces Family Album with 21 Laps/Adelstein Prods.

Comedy writer-producers Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, creators of the 20th Century Fox TV-produced comedy pilot Family Album, have signed a two-year overall deal with the studio. Under the pact, the two will join New Girl, 20th TV's hot new comedy series for Fox, as co-executive producers. Additionally, their pilot Family Album is in strong contention at Fox for midseason. Along with another half-hour pilot, Little In Common, Family Album is vying for a spot on the network's four-show comedy block in March. To further boost the project's chances, 20th TV has agreed to produce a second episode, which Port and Wiseman are currently working on. Family Album, which 20th TV co-produces with Marty Adelstein and Shawn Levy's studio-based 21 Laps/Adelstein Prods., stemmed from a blind script deal the studio signed with Port and Wiseman last year. "Having dated for a while, we all collectively wanted to take this relationship to the next level,...

The theme of the Upfronts this year is that we already know most of the news before the networks take the stage. Fox was a particularly conspicuous culprit on this front, as there were absolutely no shows on the bubble going into the schedule announcements. Shows like "Breaking In" and "The Chicago Code" had (sadly) already been canceled, while the inexplicable ongoing renewal of all things Seth MacFarlane continued. He'll be running Fox in three years, and running for President in in 2020, mark my words.
Now, before we get into the new Fox schedule and start ripping Fox apart (presumably - I'm writing this before looking at their press release or any clips), I want to step back a moment. We all love ripping Fox to shreds for the travesty of justice that was its treatment of "Firefly." It's prematurely yanked quite a few shows ("Drive" and "Lone Star" immediately...

In choosing its comedies for the 2011-2012 season, Fox didn't venture too far from the familiar. The network made a clear effort to stick to what's been working for them thus far, choosing shows with reliable themes and actors with proven staying power.
Zap2it was on the scene at the 2011 Upfront Presentation in New York on May 16 to get a first look at the new comedy line-up. Here are our first impressions.
"I Hate My Teenage Daughter"
This season, Fox met success with "Raising Hope," a comedy about hilariously bad parenting -- and they're sticking to it with "I Hate My Teenage Daughter." "That's a title, not a statement," jokes Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly. Don't worry... the show looks to be much funnier than he is. For the coveted post-"X-Factor" Wednesday spot, Reilly says that they sought out a sitcom with a "relatable hook, with a strong female appeal at its core,...

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with second announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the list over on Fox.
Aiming to stop the ratings slide that takes place when "American Idol" isn't on, Fox laid waste last week to practically every show that wasn't majorly performing on its schedule, though the fate of "Breaking In" remains in question right now. They're also betting big on the new take of Simon Cowell's "The X Factor" in the Fall - hoping it will perform as well or better than the now Cowell-less "American Idol" does in the Spring.
They're also using the Fall to launch arguably the single biggest show of the new season - "Terra Nova". The lavishly expensive series about future humanity living in a colony in the prehistoric past is not just being touted...

Fox is kicking off the 2011-12 television season with new shows "The X Factor," "Terra Nova," a pair of comedies titled "New Girl" and "I Hate My Teenage Daughter," both of which are still working titles and a new addition to its Animation Domination lineup with "Allen Gregory."
For midseason, "American Idol" is back with a special premiere following the Nfc Championship game. New dramas for midseason include "Alcatraz" and "The Finder," while "Glee" will take a spring hiatus for new comedies "Family Album" (staring "Glee's" Mike O'Malley) or "Little in Common" with Rob Corddry and Animation Domination will add "Napoleon Dynamite" to the Sunday lineup.
"24" star Kiefer Sutherland is also returning to Fox in "Touch," which centers on the relationship between a single father and his 11-year-old son with special needs. Their relationship and their lives take an extraordinary turn when the gifted son begins to make connections...

Mike O'Malley has revealed details of his pilot Family Album. The project, which is in contention for Fox's 2011-2012 season, stars O'Malley as a father who is trying to spend quality time with his family. "Family Album is a show about an American family in Pittsburgh," O'Malley told Zap2It. "Myself, Rachael Harris and Rob Huebel are members of the same family. "Rachel plays my wife, Rob plays my brother-in-law and we've got some kids. It really is just me trying to make my way in the world, as Rachael and Rob are. It's just a real awesome family comedy." O'Malley explained that the project is more of a comedy than Glee, in which he plays Kurt's father Burt. "What's interesting about my (more)...

On Tuesday (May 10), we grabbed "Glee's" Mike O'Malley (aka Burt Hummel) when he stopped by the Ktla Morning Show. We asked him about the upcoming "Prom Queen" episode, his comedy pilot -- "Family Album" -- and stood by helplessly when the interview was crashed by "Parenthood's Dax Shepard.
O'Malley told us he hopes Burt Hummel will eventually get to sing on "Glee." Citing Artie's out-of-the-wheelchair dream sequence "Safety Dance," he didn't see why a similar scenario couldn't be concocted for Burt.
He also had blunt advice for would-be prom-goers: "It's really just a party where everybody's dressed up. It's really just a dance ... I think that if people look at it that way they won't be disappointed when it turns out to be just another dance in a fancy costume."
O'Malley -- when not at all pressed -- offers that everyone should be nicer.
Noted.

Mike O’Malley, who played the zany mooch, brother in-law on the CBS Series Yes Dear, and maybe better known for Emmy nominated performance as Curt’s father in Glee, is adding a potential regular series gig to his Fox plate. O’Malley is set to return to his more comedic roots and play the lead in the single-camera comedy pilot Family Album, written by Joe Port and Joe Wiseman and directed by Shawn Levy. It centers on Dave (O’Malley), a passionate, overly enthusiastic former jock who, after a breakthrough experience on a family vacation returns home with a renewed conviction to “bond the crap out of his family.” Given a choice between drama or comedy it seems as if he prefers the latter.
