Romantic comedies like Players may surprise you with deeper messages about love and relationships. Players pays tribute to iconic rom-coms like Hitch, Crazy, Stupid, Love, and The Ugly Truth. The key takeaway from Players is to be true to yourself and pursue love for the right reasons.
When you think about romantic comedies, two things often come to mind: the lead characters falling in love and the overall storyline being relatively predictable. Now, even though most fans can usually anticipate the ending just minutes into these movies, there is still a sense of excitement that comes with the process of watching two people awkwardly fumble through interactions before eventually accepting and admitting their love for one another.
Netflix sure knows the charming genre is a big hitter, and on Valentine's Day, the streaming service released a cheeky new rom-com entitled Players, with the Jane the Virgin star, Gina Rodriguez, and...

Who could've imagined "Community" launching the careers of so many big-name artists? From the Russo Brothers to Donald Glover and Alison Brie, Dan Harmon's cult-favorite comedy series was a breeding ground for then-budding talents, perhaps none more so than composer Ludwig Göransson. Over the last 15 years, Göransson has cemented himself as one of the best music-making millennials in the business, along the way picking up an Oscar for the sick Afrofuturistic beats of his "Black Panther" soundtrack (although his Oscar-nominated score for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" was just as impressive). He's now landed a well-deserved second Academy Award for his electrifying work on "Oppenheimer," placing him in some reputable company when it comes to the Oscars.
Specifically, this gives Göransson just as many Oscars as Hans Zimmer. It's actually kind of mind-boggling that the legendary composer doesn't have more than that, considering just how many iconic movie scores he's...

Alan Ritchson has become well-known for playing beefy characters with a strong sense of justice after starring in Titans as Hank Hall/Hawk and his current gig as the titular hero in Prime Video’s Reacher. But before playing TV’s biggest boy Jack Reacher, Ritchson appeared in a variety of movies and TV shows, some more unexpected than others.
From Brooklyn Nine-Nine to New Girl, here are some of Alan Ritchson’s weirdest pre-Reacher roles.
Gloss – The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Alan Ritchson doesn’t have much screen time in the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, but in that short amount of time he’s able to give a surprising amount of depth to his character. Gloss was raised as a career tribute from District 1, and went on to win his year, only to be thrust into the arena once again in the Quarter Quell. Gloss and many of...

The rules are simple: Survive 30 days while being hunted by people attempting to kill you, and win one million dollars. As long as you're with another person, the hunters will leave you alone. This is the proposition presented to Tommy Walcott by a paid-to-be-there Andy Samberg in the Hulu film "Self Reliance." Written, directed, produced, and starring Jake Johnson, "Self Reliance" taps into the thrilling anticipation of David Fincher's "The Game," but with a lighthearted sense of humor and hell of a lot of heart that could only come from the guy who gave us Nick Miller on "New Girl" and one of the best episodes of "Mythic Quest."
Tommy decides to exploit the loophole by paying a transient man named James/Walter (Biff Wiff) to stay with him 24/7. He also encounters a woman named Maddy (Anna Kendrick) who is also playing the game, and who Tommy starts to...

Celebrity cameos are common in sitcoms of the past and present – Carrie Fisher in The Big Bang Theory, Prince in New Girl, Taraji P. Henson in Abbott Elementary, and so many more – but no series did celebrity cameos quite like Seinfeld. Throughout its nine seasons and 180 episodes, Seinfeld had an array of celebrity cameos, though some of them weren't celebrities just yet. Part of the fun of watching Seinfeld in 2024 is identifying the sheer number of celebrities in one-episode guest roles during the early years of their career, often as one of the gang's love interests. Jerry's (Jerry Seinfeld) character, in particular, had a revolving door of girlfriends played by up-and-coming actresses, many of whom would go on to star in successful shows of their own soon after, like Courtney Cox (Friends), Kristin Davis (Sex and the City), and Debra Messing (Will & Grace). What distinguishes Seinfeld's celebrity cameos from...

Janine's internship with the school district could end early as Abbott Elementary season 3 takes a new turn. Janine's misplaced loyalty leads to consequences as she faces a complaint in season 3, episode 5. Janine's power trip at the school district challenges her idealistic persona in Abbott Elementary season 3.
While Abbott Elementary season 3 sent Janine to work for the school district, her internship could come to an end earlier than expected. Abbott Elementary dodged one major sitcom pitfall when the show began its third season. Seasons 1 and 2 of the workplace sitcom teased a slow-burn romance between Abbott Elementary’s heroine Janine and her love interest Gregory, but the mockumentary’s season 3 premiere saw the duo agree to remain friends instead of dating. Unlike The Mindy Project, New Girl, The Office, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Abbott Elementary didn’t end its “Will they, won’t they” relationship as season 3 began.

There’s no dating in the apocalypse … at least not for the first few years. It’s all raw survival, never-ending panic, and flashes of joy and ingenuity that keep humanity going just enough to persevere. At least that’s what all the end-of-the-world tales tell us.
In recent years, stories like Station Eleven and The Last of Us have depicted various permutations of disrepair that society might fall into after a deadly global pandemic. When a large portion of the population is just gone and every day is a fight to stay alive, standards and realities change. Instead of meeting by the bar, two lovers might meet staging a coup against a rogue government agency, falling into a booby trap, or perhaps even during a delivery of infant formula to a prison gate.

Before starring as the title role in the hit Prime Video series “Reacher,” Alan Ritchson had auditioned for several notable superheroes and action heroes throughout his career, including Marvel’s Thor. In a new Men’s Health cover story, Ritchson revealed that he auditioned for the hammer-wielding god of thunder and, because of his appearance, figured he’d be a shoo-in for the lead in the 2011 Marvel film.
“I didn’t take it seriously,” Ritchson said of the audition. “I was like, ‘They’ll throw me the part if I look like the guy; nobody really cares about acting,'” The casting team, though, told Ritchson’s reps that the actor hadn’t shown that he had “the craft,” and the part ultimately went to Chris Hemsworth.

Zoe Lister-Jones was proud to attend Sunday’s Spirit Awards, and the reason is twofold. First, the multihyphenate talent turned up in Santa Monica to support a pair of nominations for Roku’s Slip, the original series she created, starred in and executive produced alongside a team that includes Dakota Johnson. Reason No. 2: She did so by walking into the event hand-in-hand with a new love in her life.
When the subject of her plus-one came up during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 41-year-old Lister-Jones responded with a big reveal: “I’m here, I’m queer, I have some fear but I’m working through it.” Lister-Jones is in a new relationship with a fellow filmmaker, Sammi Cohen, who most recently directed Netflix’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, the teen comedy starring Adam Sandler and family including wife Jackie and their daughters Sadie and Sunny.

Zooey Deschanel left New Girl in season 5 due to pregnancy, leading to a storyline with Megan Fox's character Reagan joining the group. The show went against typical sitcom tropes by having Jess and Reagan become friends instead of romantic rivals, adding a unique dynamic. Deschanel juggled motherhood with her role on New Girl, bonding with Megan Fox over the challenges of being a working parent.
As Zooey Deschanel was the lead of the popular sitcom, many fans wonder why Jess left New Girl temporarily in season 5. Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, New Girl followed Jessica Day (Deschanel), a bubbly, young teacher who, after discovering her boyfriend cheated on her, moved into a loft with three complete strangers: Nick Miller, Schmidt, and Coach, who was quickly replaced by Winston, though he did return. Aside from that, the main cast remained the same – except in season 5, when Jess left for a string of episodes.

It seems like it wasn’t that long ago that Grammy Award-winning singer and musician Taylor Swift was amidst a scandal that had her explicit images and videos being leaked to the public on the internet, which was later found to be nothing but AI DeepFakes. And now, another famous female celebrity finds herself in the same situation.
Taylor Swift in a still from The Eras Tour
Recent reports suggest that American podcaster and internet personality Bobbi Althoff has gotten her explicit media made public to the people and her fans, which has caused a lot of commotion in her community and beyond in a short period. But on the flip side, this too feels like nothing but an AI DeepFake of the star made by some miscreant to rile the public up.

Players is a successful rom-com on Netflix with a unique twist on a character from a popular sitcom. In Players, Adam is a confident and subtle character in contrast to Coach from New Girl. Coach from New Girl left after season 4, while Adam and Mack end up together at the end of Players.
Netflix’s newest romantic comedy, Players, is a subtle 180 of a character from a very popular sitcom. Netflix’s catalog of movies from different genres keeps expanding every week, and among its most recent and successful additions is Players. Directed by Trish Sie and written by Whit Anderson, Players takes viewers to New York City to meet Mack (Gina Rodriguez), a sportswriter who, along with her friends, comes up with elaborate but successful hook-up schemes to help each other get dates and more.
One day, Mack meets Nick (Tom Ellis), a war correspondent and author who she’s very attracted to.

New Girl evolved from focusing on Jess to showcasing a strong ensemble cast, making it a memorable and relatable sitcom. The show's premise change allowed for deeper character relationships and exploration of shared adult experiences, resonating with viewers. Without the strong ensemble cast alongside Jess, New Girl's lasting popularity and success would not have been possible.
Even though it has been six years since the sitcom wrapped up, New Girl remains a show with lasting popularity and mass appeal, and that's thanks to it shifting away from its original premise. Damon Wayans Jr. Thinks Sex Scenes in Movies Should be More Realistic: “It’s Wack a Lot of the Time”
Damon Wayans Jr. is revealing one thing he would change about romantic comedies.
The actor, who stars in the new Netflix rom-com Players, recently told Yahoo Entertainment that he feels sex scenes in movies should be more realistic.
“I think what I would lose is how good the sex is in all the movies because they’re always like rolling off each other, like, ‘That was crazy.’… It’s wack a lot of the time,” Wayans said. He added that he would prefer to see “stuff that happens in real life.”
The New Girl actor also admitted that he initially didn’t like the typical rom-com format, but after filming Players, alongside Gina Rodriguez, his perspective changed.
“I used to not like the idea of knowing how the movie is going to end from the beginning, but after doing this movie, I thought because this was such a fresh take on the rom-com,...

Mack, the sly protagonist of Netflix’s endearing new rom-com Players, always closes. The 33-year-old journalist has a back pocket stuffed with plays that rarely fail. Want to convince the stranger at the bar that you can offer her the world? Or bag your next-door neighbor? Mack and her friends can walk you through the moves, honed over 12 years, to force an interaction.
The plays work well because Mack, Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.), Brannagan (Augustus Prew) and Ryan aka “Little” (Joel Courtney) are committed to research. Establishing a play requires a careful assessment of the target, the situation and the context. The plays can always help you land a steamy bar make-out, a one-night stand or maybe even a date. What they can’t do, Mack learns, is get you into a relationship.
Players, directed by Trish Sie, is the kind of romantic comedy that wears the conventions of its genre proudly.

Players fails to critique dating culture, instead celebrating and glamorizing shallow hook-up schemes. The film lacks depth and realistic characterizations, focusing on unfunny humor rather than quality storytelling. Despite the efforts of the talented cast, Players is a forgettable rom-com that disappoints with its rushed and undeserved ending.
It’s Valentine’s Day Week, and there are plenty of old and new rom-coms to look forward to, with Netflix also releasing its latest romantic comedy, Players, starring Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez. Written by Whit Anderson and directed by Trish Sie, the story sees Mack (Rodriguez), an outgoing sports reporter, who develops schemes to land one-night stands. When she starts falling in love with her latest play, Mack intends to turn her latest interest into a long-term relationship. As far as rom-coms go, Players barks up a creative tree, but this story is about as trashy as they come.

A revival of New Girl would undo its perfect ending. A reunion episode would be a fun addition to the series without messing with the ending. Nostalgia doesn't guarantee success and can hurt a show's legacy.
In the era of revivals in film and TV, New Girl shouldn’t join this trend as it would undo the show’s perfect ending. The 2010s saw a resurgence of sitcoms, and among the most popular ones is New Girl, created by Elizabeth Meriwether. New Girl introduced the audience to Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel), a quirky and optimistic young woman who, after a bad breakup, moves in with three strangers after finding their ad for a roommate online.
It doesn't take long for Jess to become friends with Schmidt (Max Greenfield), Nick (Jake Johnson), Coach (Damon Wayans Jr), and Winston (Lamorne Morris), forming a big, chaotic, but fun and supportive family. New Girl...

Last year’s R.L. Stine-based Disney+ series “Goosebumps” will return for Season 2, we’ve learned this weekend, but the cast and setting will be switched up this time around.
Variety reports, “The announcement was made during the Disney Branded Television presentation at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. As part of the announcement, it was also revealed that the second season would be eight episodes compared to the 10-episode first season, and that the show is going the anthology route. Thus, Season 2 will feature an entirely new cast and setting based on R.L. Stine’s iconic Scholastic book series.”
“Audiences everywhere fell in love with the series’ chills, thrills, heart and humor, making it one of Disney Branded Television’s most-watched shows of last year,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television. “We can’t wait to dive deeper into the brilliant mind of R.L.

If one were to base their expectations for their twenties and early thirties purely on television, they’d almost certainly be disappointed. Despite the enduring popularity of sitcoms like Friends, How I Met Your Mother, and New Girl, very few of us spend these years conveniently sharing an apartment building with all of our closest friends and frequenting the same restaurant or bar together every evening. In reality, young adulthood can often be just as eye-opening, confusing, and difficult to navigate as adolescence, even if television rarely reflects that. Those seeking a little more realism in stories about this chapter of life may find it in a surprising new source: Netflix’s One Day.

Every now and then, a "will they, won't they" storyline comes around that gets fans riled up in all the right ways.
It's one of TV's favorite tropes. Jim and Pam from The Office, Ross and Rachel from Friends, Nick and Jess from New Girl. We're suckers for it, even if we almost always know how it's going to end.
But sometimes, we're asking the wrong questions. Maybe "Will they" or "won't they" is less important, and what we should really be asking is "Should they?"
Janine and Gregory from Abbott Elementary are two of the show's most loved characters, and fans adore their flirtatious friendship.
Their chemistry is undeniable. We've even seen a hint of action here and there, and during Abbot Elementary Season 2, the colleagues finally admitted to having feelings for one another.

Sitcom character deaths can be surprisingly moving and unexpected, adding a dramatic element to an otherwise light-hearted show. Even sitcoms that primarily focus on comedy can tackle difficult topics like infertility, heartbreak, and death without straying from their established tone. Unexpected deaths in sitcoms provide an opportunity for the shows to explore themes of loss and grief, resulting in some of the saddest moments in television.
It is unusual for sitcoms to feature character deaths, but it is even more atypical for these deaths to be truly moving and unexpected. Sitcoms are generally viewed as comfort watching, even if they can be as dark as It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia or South Park. Broadly speaking, even the most satirically sharp sitcoms aren’t intended to be poignant on a regular basis as this is the realm of dramedies. If a sitcom regularly leans into tragic plots, the show becomes a dramedy.

Character departures are inevitable for most shows.
That doesn't mean we have to like them. Sometimes, a character has to go because it's necessary for the story.
Other times, the actor moves on to a new role, and the character can't continue without them.
Now and then, a character's time on a show comes to an end in a way that leaves us brokenhearted and feeling betrayed by the writers.
These exits took us by surprise, and not in a good way.

It seems like only yesterday that we were all ragging on the millennial cohort for youthful foibles like excess avocado consumption and crushing student debt accrual. But time, with its trademark humorlessness, has marched on and suddenly, the self-same kids who coined “adulting” to hashtag their Insta stories about that time they put up a shelf, are discovering how much less fun it is to be adult-ed — ready or not.

Jason Reitman is staying mighty busy these days. Less than 24 hours after the release of the latest trailer for "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," four major casting announcements were made for his next project, "SNL 1975." The film will attempt to tell the true story of what went on behind the scenes before the broadcast premiere of "Saturday Night Live" on NBC, highlighting the real-time bedlam with some of the most legendary names in American comedy. Reitman and Kenan based their screenplay on an “extensive series of interviews conducted by Reitman and Kenan with all the living cast members, writers, and crew.” The project will start production soon,...
