Walt Longmire is the dedicated and unflappable sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyoming. Widowed only a year, he is a man in psychic repair but buries his pain behind his brave face, unassuming grin and dry wit.
In the series pilot, the license plate on the sheriff's vehicle has "5" as the first number, indicating that the vehicle is from Albany County. That is where Laramie is located, along with the University of Wyoming, which is the only university in the state. Laramie is in southeastern Wyoming, bordering Colorado. The Snowy Range mountains are just west of the city. Interior shots are filmed at the Greer Garson Studios on the campus of the Santa Fe University of Art and Design, in Santa Fe, NM.
In at least one episode, when Walt finds a firearm in possession of a character, they explain to the sheriff that "It's registered". Wyoming, like many states, does not require registration of either firearms or firearms owners.
