‘The Last of Us’ Review Bombing Campaign Not Enough to Make Fans Forget the Real Breakout Star of Season 2
Image
Almost every hardcore gamer knew how “amazing” The Last of Us Season 2 would be. Apologies for the sarcasm. Better not discuss the immense amount of negative review bombs it got after the release. But for real, how did the show manage to do worse than the game itself?

While the show is taking Ls in a row, there are some Ws too. No, it’s not for Predro Pascal. It’s because of Isabela Merced, the actress who plays Dina in the show. Who knew a supporting character would get more love than the main character? Psst… The story is just bad, along with an actor who can’t display emotions.

Everyone loves Dina more than Ramsey A still from The Last of Us Season 2 | Image Credit: HBO

So why is everyone talking about Isabela Merced so much, despite The Last of Us Season 2 failing? Well, the answer is simple and has much more grandeur.

Alien: Earth - Premiere Date, Cast, Story & Everything We Know So Far
Image
20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios) had just become home to the hottest sci-fi franchise in Hollywood in the late 1970s with "Star Wars" when it unexpectedly found itself the proud parent of a second, scarier, much more adult series in "Alien." The brainchild of legendary genre screenwriter Dan O'Bannon (and directed to stylish perfection by Ridley Scott), "Alien" jolted audiences with its chest-burster scare and kept them utterly terrified until Sigourney Weaver's Ripley expelled the big, acid-blooded Xenomorph into deep space.

When "Alien" became a box office smash, Fox knew there was more money to be mined from these sleek black buggers. Indeed, that was at the heart of James Cameron's famous pitch for "Aliens," where, legend has it, he scribbled the word "Alien" down on a cocktail napkin before adding a dollar sign as the "s." While Cameron delivered the goods and then some with his sequel,...

Everything We Know About Predator: Badlands
Image
Back in 2022, 20th Century Studios, director Dan Trachtenberg, and the Hulu streaming service brought the world a new addition to the Predator franchise, the 1719-set Prey – a film that went over so well, Tranchtenberg was given the opportunity to continue expanding the Predator series. In February of 2024, it was announced that he was moving forward with a project called Predator: Badlands, which is now aiming for a November 7, 2025 theatrical release. With more details on the new film starting to emerge, we figured this was the right time to put together a list of Everything We Know About Predator: Badlands:

Prey Creative Team

Dan Trachtenberg directed Predator: Badlands from a screenplay he wrote with his Prey collaborator Patrick Aison – and they crafted a very different sort of story this time around. The studio has revealed that the film is set in the future on a remote planet, telling the story of a young Predator,...

New Extended ‘Alien: Earth’ Synopsis Now Available on Disney+
Image
The Alien franchise is stepping into new territory with a television series that promises to deliver the same heart-pounding horror fans love. Set on our planet for the first time, this show dives into a world where humanity’s curiosity leads to a terrifying encounter. It’s a fresh take on the iconic sci-fi universe, blending gritty survival with corporate intrigue.

Noah Hawley, known for his work on ‘Fargo’ and ‘Legion,’ is leading the charge as creator, writer, and director. His vision leans heavily on the retro-futuristic vibe of the 1979 ‘Alien’ film, steering clear of the mythology introduced in ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Alien: Covenant.’ Expect practical effects, claustrophobic tension, and a story that feels like a natural extension of the original classic.

A new, extended synopsis was just revealed on Disney+ and we are bringing it to you below:

When a mysterious space vessel crash-lands on Earth, a young woman and...

X-men: With Thunderbolts* Director Jake Schreier Set To Helm, A New Name Is In The Mix To Play Jubilee
Image
Last night, the news broke that Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier is in line to helm Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot, and we now have some (rumored) casting updates along with a new name reportedly in the mix to play Jubilee.

Though Schreier is said to be in early talks, the fact that multiple trades ran the story at the same time and reported that the filmmaker recently turned down several high-profile jobs may indicate that it's a done deal. Things could always change, of course, but Jeff Sneider believes that Schreier will ultimately be announced as the director of X-Men.

Sneider is also hearing that Harris Dickinson, Margaret Qualley, and Julia Butters are still on the studio's radar, and believes Alien: Romulus star David Jonsson could be "back in play" for an unknown part.

He also reports that 15-year-old Trinity Bliss, who made her big-screen debut as Tuk in James Cameron...

La película está protagonizada por David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus), Charlie Plummer (Lean on Pete), Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza), Mark Hamill (La guerra de las galaxias) y Ben Wang (Karate Kid: Legends), entre otros.

Bulk | Ben Wheatley’s secret film to premiere at Edinburgh International Film Festival
Ben Wheatley in Down Terrace (2009)
Ben Wheatley’s new film Bulk will premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. More on the secret project below.

This year’s Edinburgh Film Festival will take place in August and programme info is starting to trickle in.

The festival includes a Midnight Madness strand which tends to focus on horror, thriller and sci-fi movies and their opening night film is, excitingly, Ben Wheatley’s new film, Bulk. It’s especially exciting because no one knew he was making it.

Bulk was filmed in secret and is described as “return to the thrillingly free-spirited filmmaker’s homegrown, kaleidoscopic works like In The Earth and A Field In England,” according to Deadline.

There’s no info on what the film is about or who stars in it, but that only adds to the intrigue. The Festival’s director Paul Ridd described Wheatley’s latest as “truly unique film that took...

Every Version Of Stephen King's The Long Walk That Didn't Get Made
Image
2025 is already shaping up to be yet another big year for Stephen King fans. With Osgood Perkins' "The Monkey" having come out back in February, the remaining months are paved with big screen adaptations of "The Life of Chuck" and "The Running Man," in addition to a television series based on "The Institute." In case that wasn't enough, it seems especially fitting that "The Long Walk, one of King's bleakest stories, is finally set to hit theaters in September from director Francis Lawrence and "Strange Darling" screenwriter Jt Mollner. Marathons will never be seen the same way again.

The harrowing premise of "The Long Walk" envisions a dystopian future in which a group of young boys volunteer for the titular event in which the winner gets to make a wish of their choosing from an ominous figure known as the Major (Mark Hamill). All they have to do is walk,...

Southern Comfort (1981) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Deliverance is seen as the benchmark for backwoods, fish out of water thrillers but it’s not alone. While it’s certainly true that the John Boorman 1972 thriller had more success with its 46 million dollar return on a 2-million-dollar budget and 3 Oscar nominations including Best Picture, it may have been bested 9 years later. Southern Comfort has just as good of a pedigree in front of and behind the camera and continues to gain a better and better reputation 44 years later. The horrors found within this movie permeate the entire run time and include one of the most intense and nerve wracking final 20 minutes ever put to the screen that will sit with you long after the credits. Don’t mess with the locals as we revisit Southern Comfort.

Let’s start with director/writer/producer Walter Hill. Hill is a legend in Hollywood on both the big and small screens.

Francis Lawrence in I Am Legend (2007)
The Long Walk | Trailer for Stephen King adaptation lands
Francis Lawrence in I Am Legend (2007)
Francis Lawrence’s take on Stephen King’s The Long Walk arrives this autumn. Here’s the trailer for the film.

Stephen King fans have been patiently waiting for an adaptation of his novella The Long Walk ever since The Shawshank Redemption director and frequent King collaborator Frank Darabont snapped up the rights years and years ago, with the intention of making it himself.

For various reasons, Darabont’s take on the tale of a dystopian future where teenagers walk to their deaths in a grotesque ‘sports contest’ never came to fruition, but with Francis Lawrence, director of several The Hunger Games movies behind the camera, The Long Walk is now finally on the horizon, coming to us courtesy of Lionsgate.

The film is slated to release in September of this year, with Cooper Hoffman, star of Licorice Pizza taking one of the film’s major parts, while David Jonsson...

Say "honey yes!" to the Honey Don't! trailer

Director Ethan Coen's Honey Don't! will rocket to the top of your most anticipated movies list after you watch its new trailer. The noir comedy stars Margaret Qualley as Honey O’Donahue, a private investigator looking into a string of mysterious deaths tied to a cultish church led by Priest Dean (Chris Evans). The trailer has that classic Coen crime caper energy, with a little more sex appeal than usual. The film is written by Coen and Tricia Cooke, who previously worked with Qualley on Drive Away Dolls, and also stars Aubrey Plaza, Charlie Day, and Billy Eichner. It will be in theaters from Focus Features on Aug. 22, following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Hunger Games Director's Stephen King Dystopian Thriller Drops Intense First Trailer
Image
The task is simple: walk or die. That's the tagline for the new Stephen King movie, The Long Walk, which has just released its first intense and chilling trailer.

The Long Walk is notable for being the first novel that King ever wrote, having begun it in the mid-1960s during his freshman year at the University of Maine. Ultimately, Carrie ended up being his first published novel, while The Long Walk was eventually released in 1979, as one of King's Richard Bachman books. Based on the trailer, the movie looks to be a pretty faithful adaptation of the dystopian horror novel, although with one interesting difference: Mark Hamill's the Major states that the teenage boys will need to maintain a speed above three miles per hour to avoid receiving a warning, one mile per hour less than the book. Check out the official trailer for The Long Walk below.

The Long Walk Trailer Brings Stephen King's Bleakest Story To The Big Screen
Image
After spending years (and years) in development hell, one of Stephen King's earliest and most brutal novels is finally coming to the big screen — and we have proof! Lionsgate has released the first trailer for "The Long Walk," which hits theaters this fall. While King isn't one to pull punches, this is one of his most unflinchingly brutal works, with young men walking to their deaths while the last one standing wins a prize in a post-apocalyptic, grim vision of the future. Check it out for yourself above.

"The Long Walk" is very much akin to King's "Hunger Games," albeit without any YA flair. This is nitty, gritty, and very much R-rated. It perhaps makes sense that Francis Lawrence, known best for his work on "The Hunger Games" movies, is in the director's chair for this one. Lionsgate isn't giving us much by way of the plot, with the...

This Last Of Us Season 2 Episode 4 Scene Took A Full Week To Film
Image
Get off the subway right away if you haven't watched "The Last of Us" season 2, episode 4, "Day One." Spoilers lie ahead!

"The Last of Us" is, ostensibly, about a massive cordyceps virus that sweeps across the world and infects people, turning them into strong and bloodthirsty zombies. Still, the bloodshed we see on screen often has nothing to do with infected hordes; in this post-apocalyptic world, humans turn against each other constantly. The second episode of the show's second season, "Through The Valley," featured a massive attack — this one by an infected horde, to be fair — on the settlement of Jackson paired alongside the brutal and very personal murder of Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) at the hands of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), showing us the ways violence manifests in every part of this world. Then, in season 2's fourth episode, "Day One," Joel's surrogate daughter Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and her best...

'It Really Ruined My Day': The Last of Us Star Recalls Filming 'Disgusting' Scene
Image
Isabela Merced, who plays Dina in the HBO and Max hit series The Last of Us, is dishing on one of the more “disgusting” scenes in the dystopian show’s second season. Merced talked about the scene in which Dina and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) find disemboweled and lynched people who were killed by the Scars, in an interview with Variety.

When asked by the outlet if the bodies were actually in the scene with the duo or if they were added in at a later time, Merced said that the “bodies” were not really, in fact, “bodies” at all. “That was actually fake bodies, but they looked really realistic, and they were hung up on that wall. And it was absolutely terrifying and disgusting, and it really ruined my day to be there,” Merced said.

“Uncanny valley is a term for a reason: The brain can only take so much...

‘The Last of Us’ Star Isabela Merced on Dina and Ellie’s Romance, Getting That Sex Scene Right and LGBTQ Representation: ‘No One Actually Thinks I’m Queer’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from “Day One,” Season 2, Episode 4 of “The Last of Us,” now streaming on Max.

When Isabela Merced met with “The Last of Us” creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, she was familiar with the source material for the second season of the HBO drama, the video game “The Last of Us Part II” — but she had no idea what role they had in mind for her. “They just asked me general questions, trying to get my personality down,” she said in an interview earlier this week, during which she was fighting a cold, and began by apologizing in advance for any future coughing. Mazin and Druckmann immediately cast her as Dina — the Jackson-based best friend and love interest of Ellie (Bella Ramsey) — and Merced remembers thinking, “Oh my God, this is so much bigger than I thought!”

Dina is a major character in “Part II,...

Close Down the Beach Because Alamo Drafthouse Unveils Their New Killer 'Jaws' 50th Anniversary Collection
Image
It's hard to believe that Jaws is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025. The Steven Spielberg-directed nightmare still has horror fans scared to go into the water and continues to influence the genre. Universal is going all out to throw Jaws the ultimate beach party this year. The film is getting new action figures, Funko Pops, a freshwater 4K steelbook and is returning to theaters this summer. Now Alamo Drafthouse has unveiled their Jaws merch collection to go with that bite-sized re-release. The star of the ocean here is the Jaws popcorn bucket ($45 Usd). The bucket is the killer shark reenacting the film’s iconic poster. The popcorn goes in the literal jaws of the beast. The only question that remains is, will horror fans be brave enough to put their hand on that blood-hungry shark’s killer mouth?

The horror genre has had some frighteningly good popcorn buckets recently,...

Bella Ramsey on Filming ‘The Last of Us’ with Isabela Merced: ‘She’d Be Like This Little Sprite’ on Set
Image
[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “The Last of Us” Season 2, Episode 3, “The Path.”]

Asked which of Ellie’s relationships they were most excited to see on screen in “The Last of Us” Season 2, star Bella Ramsey didn’t hesitate to pick Dina, played by actress Isabela Merced. Ramsey described the character’s beloved queer love interest as the “most prevalent” person in Ellie’s life this season and gave IndieWire a glimpse into the odd-couple dynamic we saw taking shape in Episode 3, “The Path.”

“She’s so brilliant, and I’m really excited for people to see how wonderful she is and how much light and energy and humor she brings to this season,” Ramsey said of Merced. “She really just had this unwavering energy about her the whole time, which was really great for being on set. When I was like an old tired grandpa, she’d be like this little sprite that would...

BAFTA Rising Star Winner David Jonsson Teams With Producer Sophia Gibber to Launch Film, TV Banner (Exclusive)
Image
David Jonsson, the fast-rising star who has quickly become one of the most in-demand actors in the industry, has set up his own production company.

The Brit — who turned heads in 2023 indie darling “Rye Lane,” made his Hollywood break last year in “Alien: Romulus” and in February won the BAFTA Rising Star award — has partnered with BIFA-nominated producer Sophia Gibber to launch film and TV banner greyarea.

The duo most recently collaborated on Cal McMau’s upcoming debut feature “Wasteman,” which Jonsson stars in and exec produces alongside Gibber, who also serves as lead producer on the project.

“We found greyarea. because the stories we love don’t live in black and white. They live in the contradictions, complexities, and all the emotional truths in between — that’s where the most compelling storytelling happens,” said Jonsson.

“Over the last few years — and especially working together on ‘Wasteman’ — we found a...

‘Knives Out’ Director Rian Johnson Teases the Franchise's Future After ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ [Exclusive]
Image
Back in 2019, Knives Out was a welcome addition to the murder-mystery genre. The pairing of a detective with a peculiar personality and a cast of deliciously evil suspects made for a highly entertaining whodunit, and Netflix was quick to pick up on it and order two sequels. Now that Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is close to premiering, though, fans can't help but wonder: Is this the last we'll see of Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig)? During a new interview with Collider for the second season of his whodunnit series Poker Face, director and screenwriter Rian Johnson talked about the future of the franchise.

Johnson told Collider's Christina Radish that the excitement to keep going is still there. However, he also revealed that there are other projects he wants to work on. The filmmaker also teased that, much like Glass Onion was wildly different from the first movie,...

Sgt. Rock May Have Been Scrapped Due To Doubts About Director's Abilities; Could It Shoot Next Year Instead?
Image
Yesterday, we learned that DC Studios has halted production on Sgt. Rock. The movie, written by Justin Kuritzkes and directed by Luca Guadagnino, was in the middle of pre-production in the UK and had started assembling its cast.

We now have additional updates from the trades, starting with The Hollywood Reporter. One insider tells them that "it came down to the project's scheduling needs of shooting outdoors." Deadline, meanwhile, explains, "shooting this summer was untenable, as the team would have had to rush through prep to hit the right weather conditions at the right time."

The UK weather is inconsistent at best, but it's only May, and it's not really until late October/early November that the country starts looking particularly autumnal and then wintery. With that in mind, it's hard to buy into this explanation.

The Hollywood Reporter shares another possible explanation by revealing, "Another source raised the possibility...

‘Sgt. Rock’ Halts Pre-Production, Now Eyeing Summer 2026 Production Start
Image
Sgt. Rock, DC’s superhero flick to team Luca Guadagnino and The Penguin‘s Colin Farrell, has halted production plans, sources have confirmed to Deadline.

While the film was supposed to enter production in the coming months, we’re now told it’ll look to shoot next summer. Studio insiders said that ultimately, shooting this summer was untenable, as the team would have had to rush through prep to hit the right weather conditions at the right time. The film is being shot primarily on location in the U.K. and shooting exteriors in the dead of winter would not have been optimal conditions for cast, crew and equipment.

The Sgt. Rock news comes as a shock as the film was greenlit months ago with a $65 million budget and plan to shoot this August. Sources close to the project say Guadagnino was scouting locations last week and that the studio...

Predator: Badlands Easter Egg could be setting up long-awaited Alien vs. Predator revival
Image
They say that at Disney, no one can hear you scream. Since the House of Mouse purchased the rights to 20th Century Fox in 2019, we’ve seen the usually family-friendly studio push forward with some of Fox’s racier IPs. Following the success of 2022’s Prey, that served as an innovative Predator prequel, Fede Álvarez soared his way to the top of the box office with Alien: Romulus. Neither is staying dormant for long, with Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth bringing Xenomorphs to the small screen in 2025, a Romulus sequel already in the works, and Predator: Badlands trying something new with the Yautja.

The first trailer for Badlands offers the unique premise of a Predator protagonist, although we have occasionally seen the Skin Thieves working with humans instead of just hunting them for sport. Prey’s Dan Trachtenberg is back behind the camera for Badlands, which again is taking the...

Alien: Earth (2025)
Alien: Earth | New teasers unveil more unearthly monsters besides the Xenomorph
Alien: Earth (2025)
A pair of new Alien: Earth teaser trailers show glimpses of “five different lifeforms” – four of them seemingly separate from the Xenomorph.

The arrival of Alien Day over the weekend (the 26th April to be precise) didn’t yield a firm air date for FX’s Alien: Earth series, but it did see the release of two new teaser trailers.

We’ve already had several promos for the forthcoming TV spin off, created by Noah Hawley, but these offer something subtly different. The first, titled Crate, tells us that the series will contain additional alien threats besides the expected Xenomorph. A sequence of shots show some unholy-looking critters moving around in murky containers. Meanwhile, a voiceover tells us:

“This ship collected five different lifeforms from the darkest corners of the universe. Each one a unique, deadly species. Monsters!”

Sure enough, the camera soon reveals five crates, each carrying a number.

New 'Alien: Earth' Trailer Sends Many Deadly Creatures on a Collision Course With Earth
Image
FX is celebrating Alien Day with a new trailer forAlien: Earth, one teasing that there might be more horrors out in space than just the Xenomorph. April 26th has now been lovingly referred to by fans as Alien Day, in honor of the planet from the first film, Lv-426. While several short teasers for Alien: Earth were released over the last few days, many expected FX to reveal the premiere date for the upcoming series on Alien Day. Fans didn't get a release date, but they got an exciting tease for the series, franchise, and future.

The 42-second clip reveals a spaceship with compartments containing various unspecified alien species. The narration says, "This ship collected five different lifeforms from the darkest corners of the universe. Each one a unique, deadly species. Monsters." Then a classic Xenomorph emerges from atop one of the crates and jumps at the camera. The teaser...

'Alien: Romulus' Sequel Reportedly Will Include a 'Predator' Crossover
Image
First, Dan Trachtenberg delivered an unexpected and brilliant prequel to the Predator franchise with Prey, and then Fede Álvarez directed one of the best entries in the Alien saga with Alien: Romulus – and both under the banner of Disney, which many people believed would be the death of both franchises. Following the trailer for Trachtenberg’s next movie, Predator: Badlands, which features an Alien Easter egg in the form of Elle Fanning’s android character being created by the Weyland-Yutani corporation, a new rumor has now hinted that the inevitable crossover of the two sci-fi franchises will be happening a lot sooner than anyone expected.

Coming from Jeff Sneider on The Hot Mic - so you can accept this with a nominal amount of disbelief for now - Álvarez’s Romulus sequel will reportedly feature a Predator in some way, bringing the two franchises fully into alignment for the first...

Celebrate Alien Day With New Xenomorph-Themed Clothing Line
Image
Happy Alien Day! Over the last decade, April 26th has been an official celebration of Ridley Scott's coveted horror franchise. Since 1979, when horror fans were introduced to Xenomorphs for the first time, there have been seven mainline films in the franchise. Nine if you include the Alien vs. Predator crossover films that aren't canon. Now, to help honor some of the genre's scariest monsters, Alien is getting a new apparel collection from Rucking Fotten.

The collection highlighting Alien, Aliens, and Alien 3 has specifically been made for Alien Day. There are mostly long sleeves and t-shirts that feature Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley, the iconic Alien poster and more than a few Xenomorphs and chestbursters. However, there's also a hat and sweatshirt featuring the classic Alien font. Rucking Fotten expressed their excitement for the new collection, writing:

“The last time we participated in Alien Day was 2022 where we paired...

Alien: Earth – Xenomorphs revealed in new teaser and poster
Image
In space, no one can hear you scream. But on Earth? We’re going to find out, as Alien: Earth is landing on Hulu/Disney+ this year. And to amp up the excitement, we have a new teaser and key art.

Here is the synopsis of Alien: Earth: “When a mysterious space vessel crash-lands on Earth, a young woman (Sydney Chandler) and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet’s greatest threat in FX’s highly anticipated TV series “Alien: Earth” from creator Noah Hawley…“Alien: Earth” is set in 2120 when five corporations – Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold – wield the power of nations, and proprietary advancements in technology provide the promise of a new tomorrow.”

The studio has dropped a few teasers and clips here and there, but there really isn’t a whole lot of extensive promotion going on.

Rumor: Fede Álvarez's Alien: Romulus Sequel Will Feature A Predator
Image
We recently learned that Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez is working on the script for a direct sequel to the block-busting sci-fi horror movie, and it sounds like the follow-up might just lay the groundwork for a new Alien vs. Predator film.

Álvarez confirmed that he's currently developing the story during a recent interview with Empire, while promising that the movie will take the classic franchise "into uncharted waters."

“Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I are working on that right now. We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters.”

Alvarez also reiterated that the current plan is to follow the survivors of the previous film, Cailee Spaeny’s Rain Carradine and her...
