From '90s classics to Oscar-winning ensemble films, veteran actor Ryan Phillippe has played a wide variety of roles over the years and dabbled in basically every genre of cinema and television there is. Looking at his timeline of projects in decades past, you'd be surprised to see that he doesn't exactly look like he's aged at all. Power to him! We recently spoke with Phillippe as his latest indie thriller Prey hits the masses this week. It's a rather simple premise but remains hard-hitting thanks to a number of gritty, tense sequences involving certain wild felines in Africa.
Ryan Phillippe plays a doctor trying to fly back home after he and his wife's well-being and community are threatened by local terrorists of sorts. Emile Hirsch (Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood) plays the wildcard pilot trying to get him and his wife (Mena Suvari) out of there. When the flight doesn't go as planned,...

Quentin Tarantino's final film, The Movie Critic, may feature John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson, as the director is reportedly saving roles for his former leading men. The Movie Critic will be set in 1977 Los Angeles and will have a female lead, dispelling earlier rumors that it would be a biopic of critic Pauline Kael. Samuel L. Jackson has responded coyly to the casting rumors while also expressing some discontent with the lack of diversity in Tarantino's previous film, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.
The final film of seminal director Quentin Tarantino, The Movie Critic, will reportedly reunite with the filmmaker with Pulp Fiction star John Travolta. A new rumor, which comes courtesy of The Ankler’s Jeff Sneider and The Hot Mic podcast, claims that a role is being saved for Travolta in The Movie Critic, with Tarantino also hoping to cast several other former collaborators,...

Spinoff Once Upon A Time In Wonderland failed to gain traction and weakened its original show, Once Upon A Time. The spinoff, based on Lewis Carroll's novels, explored new characters and fantastical settings, but it was quickly canceled. The decision to run Once Upon A Time In Wonderland in a difficult time slot and alongside more popular shows led to its struggle and eventual cancelation.
Though expected to be a popular addition to network television, the Once Upon A Time In Wonderland spinoff series failed to take off and wound up weakening the momentum of its original show, Once Upon A Time. The idea for the spinoff series came after its forerunning show became a sensation on small screens following the lives of classic fairytale characters like Snow White, Prince Charming, Captain Hook, and more. When I think back on the ABC fairytale series Once Upon a Time, I first and foremost picture the “requel” season’s Cinderella 2.0 on a motorcycle.

A fan-favorite addition to the Hulk's lore has a surprising connection to beloved director Quentin Tarantino. A terrifying aspect of the acclaimed Immortal Hulk run as a minor, yet fun connection to one of Tarantino's feature films.
The 2018 series Immortal Hulk was a critically lauded run on the Jade Giant that brought the character back to his more horror-based roots. The series was a deep-dive into Bruce Banner's mythos that looked at the various personalities of the Hulk. It also provided a cosmic explanation for why Hulk was seemingly able to survive the brutal punishment he'd faced over the years. Immortal Hulk introduced the concept of the Green Door, a barrier that allows those affected by gamma rays to return to life after they die. The Green Door was also connected to a terrifying nexus known as the Below-Place, the home of a terrifying entity known as the One-Below-All.

The Vampire Diaries franchise often gave new actors the opportunity to show off their range, which frequently resulted in them gaining widespread attention and featuring in other supernatural franchises, such as Once Upon a Time. Between The Vampire Diaries and its spinoffs, The Originals and Legacies, the franchise had 331 episodes, which meant that actors could easily find a role that they were well suited for, whether that meant serving as main characters, love interests, or guest stars. In addition to a line on their resume, The Vampire Diaries actors gained experience working with various props and effects to fit the supernatural setting, which was beneficial in their future careers.

He reinvented the Western with his Dollars trilogy, but how does Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time... trilogy rate alongside each other? Westerns were once one of Hollywood's biggest genres, but by the end of the '60s, they were in decline. Audience tastes began to drift away from the often simplistic depictions of Good vs Evil that more traditional "Oaters" depicted. That said, Sergio Leone's unofficial Yojimbo remake A Fistful Of Dollars gave the ailing genre a stylish violent shot in the arm and made Clint Eastwood a movie star.
Leone's "Spaghetti" Westerns succeeded by breaking the rules of the genre too. Eastwood's Man with No Name was an anti-hero with no problem shooting first and using others to achieve his goals. Leone only made three further movies after finishing work on the Dollars movies, with this trio forming his unofficial Once Upon A Time... trilogy. They...

It’s been 11 years since The Menu director Mark Mylod last directed a feature film, and his return to the big screen has gone better than he ever could have expected. His epicurean horror-comedy starring Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult has not only been met with critical acclaim, but it also scored Searchlight’s biggest opening weekend — 15.2 million — at the worldwide box office since the heyday of Slumdog Millionaire (2008).
Mylod’s last film, the Anna Faris and Chris Evans-led romcom, What’s Your Number? (2011), didn’t connect with critics or audiences, so Mylod decided to change up his approach and focus on television. He went on to direct the pilots of Once Upon a Time, Shameless and The Affair, before finding a home at HBO by way of six episodes of Game of Thrones and 13 episodes of Succession, which netted him two Emmys as executive producer.

As a writer, Quentin Tarantino is most renowned for his unforgettable dialogue style. Unlike the rapid-fire repartee of Aaron Sorkin’s dialogue, Tarantino’s takes its time to bask in the music of conversation. Sometimes, Tarantino’s dialogue serves no purpose other than to make a contract killer more relatable because he’s talking about the food from McDonald’s. Some of his most memorable dialogue has nothing to do with the plot.

One of the more unexpected shifts in media habits during the pandemic, at least for me, has been a new interest in those little bird-box book libraries that inhabit front lawns in the quieter neighborhoods here. I regularly pass a dozen of them on a circuit of five or six miles around Santa Monica and Brentwood. Always, I stop to see what they’re offering. Sometimes, bag and sanitizer in hand, I’ll actually swap a book.
It’s a fascinating exercise, in that the books—from a crumbling Pocket Book edition of George Plimpton’s Out of My League, printed in 1967, to the hefty contemporary cookbooks at a stand-up shed in Santa Monica Canyon—turn out to be far more intellectually, culturally, and politically diverse than the current run of lawn signs, cable news or festival films.

A sleeper hit at Sundance, the sublimely disturbing Once Upon A Time In Venezuela has been taken under wing by the Topic streaming service and forwarded as the troubled nation’s Oscar submission for Best International Feature. Although it speaks very directly to the moment, Anbabel Rodriguez Rios’ documentary simultaneously gives off unmistakable airs of the eternal in the way it pointedly yet serenely presents the slow-motion crisis of a poor, aquatic-based community on the brink of extinction. The things of life — family, nature, the environment, education, politics — all figure prominently in the mix to create an indelible picture of a literal backwater facing devastation. It’s both a striking and deeply sorrowful work.
There is no question that what we see happening to the fishing village of Congo Mirador on Lake Maracaibo in northern Venezuela represents a humanitarian and ecological tragedy. Most documentarians would treat it exclusively as such,...
