- April 1917. With John still absent, Isobel's butler Molesley makes a play for Anna but is rejected. Robert gets a new valet, shell-shocked ex-soldier Henry Lang, whilst William goes off to war. Edith learns to drive a tractor extremely well, and nearly succumbs to a kiss from the married farmer Mr. Drake. Sybil and Thomas work in the cottage hospital, where the latter begins to learn some humanity. At Isobel's suggestion - and to Violet's dismay - Downton Abbey is turned into a convalescent ward to ease the hospital's bed shortage. Mary invites middle-aged newspaper tycoon, and prospective beau, Sir Richard Carlisle to a dinner party, also attended by the Crawleys and Lavinia. Suspicious of Carlisle, Violet invites her daughter and sister to the Earl, Lady Rosamund, who is intrigued by the fact that Carlisle and Lavinia already seem well-acquainted. Carson, despite being taken ill whilst serving dinner, is still perceptive enough to suggest to Mary that Matthew is really the man for her.—don @ minifie-1
- Matthew again returns to England, promoted to captain and with a new assignment. His new fiancée is terribly anxious at his possible return to the front. Lady Edith shocks her family when she tells them that she's going to help a local farmer, who finds himself without farmhands, by driving the man's tractor. Edith proves to be quite up to the task but she gets more than she bargained for when the married farmer kisses her and she welcomes his advances. Robert Cawley's new valet, Henry Lang, makes something of a fiasco while serving at dinner. He is shell-shocked, though few recognize it. Mr. Mosely develops an interest in Anna but she has decided that John Bates is the only man she will ever love. Lady Mary's friend, newspaper publisher Sir Richard Carlisle, arrives for a visit. Thomas, the former footman, is re-assigned to Isobel's hospital. The hospital expands into Downton Abbey after a young lieutenant, ordered to leave the hospital due to lack of space, commits suicide. Mrs. Patmore gets particularly bad news about her nephew.—garykmcd
- Romance seems to be in bloom at Downton: Sir Richard Carlisle and Mary, Edith and farmer, Mosely unsuccessfully with Anna, Edith and a local farmer, and in the War: Thomas helps at the hospital, Williaam enlists, ans the EArl is frustrated.—duke1029
- The earl grumbles being denied a front post and having to do with skeleton, often under-qualified staff, including shell-shock veteran new valet Henry Lang, while Molesley, who avoided having Violet's exemption for draft processing undone as with Wlliam, who's delighted to be trained but ignores Daisy can't quit requite his love. Matthew is back, promoted captain with a temporary recruiting post, yet Rose decides last-minute against declaring at the garden party she's still an alternative for devoted but simple Lavivia, considering newspaper magnate Sir Richard Carlisle as a 'rough diamond' alternative pleaded by aunt Roasumund given her tainted reputation. Finally transferred to England with his injured hand, Thomas is at the officers convalescence center run by Dr. 'major' Clarkson, like now qualified nurse, both opposing him in vain against sending on emotionally scared lieutenant Edward Courtenay, who commits suicide, inspiring the idea to add capacity by installing a hospital in Downton. Carson's desperate efforts to keep up service standards by double jobs and filling the voids himself end sin collapse and bed-rest. Edith steps in as recovered farmer John Drake's farmhand, but is dismissed after his wife observed them kissing. Cook Patmore asked the earl to find her missing cousin at the front, but is discretely told he was shot as coward.—KGF Vissers
