A newsroom undergoes some changes in its workings and morals as a new team is brought in, bringing unexpected results for its existing news anchor.
To research the cable news world, Aaron Sorkin had been an off-camera guest at Countdown with Keith Olbermann in 2010 to observe the show's production and quizzed Parker Spitzer's staff when he was a guest on that show. He also spent time shadowing Hardball with Chris Matthews as well as other programs on Fox News and CNN. Sorkin told TV Guide that he intended to take a less cynical view of the media.
The very beginning of the title sequence shows the Soviet Sputnik flying with its antennas oriented away from the Earth. The Sputnik rotated, which is why that design of antenna array was chosen as it allows equal transmission of radio signals in all directions.
