  • it had nice animation, interesting characters and an engaging detective/mystery storyline, but it just didn't have enough depth or anything special to really hook me...

Kujo is an exchange student at an elite academy in a fictional European country in the 1920's. There he meets an enigmatic young girl named Victorique (pronounced 'Victorica') who never attends class, but prefers to read alone in the botanical garden on the roof of the library. Together, the two of them roam around solving riddles and mysteries that her brother, the local detective, ends up getting all the credit for...

this is the first time I've seen an anime like this, so i guess it has originality on its side (for me at least). Overall, it was enjoyable enough, but nothing extraordinary...
  • The premise of a mysterious girl secluded atop the immense library of St. Marguerite Academy who forms a bond of convenience with a marginalised exchange student promised interesting things. The choice to weave history elements into the main story right from the start was also a surprise. The show delivered almost everything I could want too.

Victorique is a highly intelligent, beautiful but initially glacial girl surrounded by a myth. The exchange student from Japan, a boy named Kazuya Kujo, while scholarly is not exactly a genius who is also weighed down by a myth of his own. What sets him apart from Victorique however is his sense of justice and compassion. They complete each other while they solve intricate mysteries. Their personalities differ but at their core they are kindred spirits which is portrayed in many situations, many of which end up being funny or touching. The generally collected Victorique betraying emotions like excitement over sweets, embarrassment over day to day mishaps or genuine affection towards Kujo made me melt. The supporting characters are also very good. Probably the best in my opinion was the girl from England, which unfortunately was introduced way too late into the show. Although there are quite a few of episodic characters, some carry over significant pieces of the plot forward. And the story is not exactly rosy. There is quite enough sadness but it's usually bittersweet.

However sometimes the gloomy mood is artificially altered. Also, victims of circumstance are spun into villains and vice versa. These are the critical failings of this show. In a few episodes the spotlight was shifted from atrocious actions to trivial ones. Making a big deal about the theft of priceless objects but mentioning the perpetrators also made countless girls' lives hell for profit only as an afterthought made me sick. At the end of the show quite a few of the villains, except the main one, are miraculously redeemed. The one that genuinely made me furious had his murderous jealousy filtered thorough rosy glasses to make it look like love.

The good elements of this show still manage to not be overshadowed by the bad. The episodic cases are intelligent and provide a firm foundation for a good main story. The characters involved, despite what some might say, develop nicely. Although in some cases that happens a bit erratic. But the most important aspect of this show is the messages it's trying to relay and their corresponding emotions which are, for the most part, truly wonderful.

The story starts innocuously enough but then the innocence of youth quickly fades when the tragically wretched back story of Victorique becomes evident. One is enthralled by her beauty, intelligence and the clumsy way she attempts to hide her developing feeling for Kujo.

Unlike manipulation and being seen as a tool by her father, Kujo genuinely likes her as his friend and goes out of his way to include her in his circle of earnest friends.

A fine balance of sleuthing and intrigue. Though I'm a doctor myself I misjudged most of the mysteries these two solve!

Though heartwarming in the end, I can't but feel righteous indignation for how cruelly Cordelia and Victorique were used by the Marquis Albert. His defeat and demise were bittersweet as it cost the lives of Cordelia and her closest friends. Still, Victorique's brother finally came through as his own man and not the puppet of his tyrannical father.

One doubt; I wonder how a seriously injured Kujo returns home intact from the war. Would appreciate some elucidation!

    Enjoy! A must-watch!

As one would expect from a product of Studio Bones 'Gosick' looks fantastic; the characters look great and the backgrounds are rich in detail. Of course it takes more than looking good to make a good series; it needs an interesting story and characters with interesting personalities... thankfully this series has both.

The protagonist is Kazuya Kujo; a Japanese student who has been sent abroad to study at a school in the fictional European country of Sauville during the 1920s. One day while exploring the library he discovers Victorique (Victorica), a girl who is meant to be in his class but never attends lessons. She spends her days reading books but is bored; she does however enjoy a good mystery and frequently solves 'unsolvable' crimes for her policeman brother. Kujo is not impressed that her brother keeps taking the credit but she doesn't seem to mind. We soon learn that she is not permitted to leave the school grounds without her brother so she is happy to go out solving his mysteries. As one would expect from such a series this frequently leads her and Kujo into dangerous situations. At first it seems as if the series will just be one unconnected mystery after another but later on we learn that many events are connected and that Victorique is in danger from her father; a man who had her with a sinister intention in mind from the start.

I really enjoyed this series even though it turned out to be much darker than I expected; we learn that Victorique's mother had been kidnapped, raped and held captive to give her father the child he needed and that Victorique had been held captive for much of her life! Kujo is a good protagonist; holding the story together well but Victorique is the most interesting character; she is constantly insulting Kujo but it is clear that she misses him whenever he isn't around. While the animation looks cute the subject matter frequently isn't; the murders don't happen off screen and there is often plenty of blood spilt, also not every 'good' character makes it to the end so the viewer must expect some sadness.

This series can currently be watched legally on Crunchyroll; in Japanese with English subtitles. If it should get a DVD release here I would certainly consider purchasing it.
  • It's been a nice journey Kujo and Victorique.I'm sure the love, sacrifices and the miseries beautifully portrayed in the 'Historical Romance' will forever be remembered...
  • Before how i felt about this anime i like to share you with favourite thing about this anime.

LAST ARC OF THE ANIME IS SOO ROMANTIC AND THRILLING YOU WILL SHEAD TEARS.

I will tell you what kind of anime is gosick . It is a mystery romance anime.

I enjoyed every episode. It's not a perfect anime there were some flaws like male protagonist aka kazuya being an idiot 70 percentage of story besides this was the way protagonist solve some cases.

Main things interested me was unique stories formed from horror stories thus leading towards the truth.we can see bita and piece of romance is genuinely explored in deeper level than usual romance anime i seen to date.

I can assure you that ending Of The ANIME make it a must watch for sure.
  • I just think this anime was pretty underwhelming for me. The characters just put me off and like it would've had potential, if character development was a lot better for me to be more interested in them. Its a pity because the animation looks so good but oh well, we can't like every single anime!
  • Really underrated. The characters are well written. The mysteries are thought through well. Considering it was aired in 2011 really good animation. Really hope for a follow up movie if not a season.
  • Okay I am not a fan of long reviews so in short we all know that most of the animes are set In japan, highschool or in an fantasy world. There are only few anime which are set in other continents or country. Those types of anime gives a different type of vibe from the normal anime like their are different characters, music and background everything looks kinda new and cool. Seriously, I am bored from normal highschool animes. I wanna watch some anime which are set on foreign land. So, that's why I am rating this anime 10 star because it has all the features listed above. Storyline might be little weak or maybe complex for some people but,Yah people wants to watch this kind of anime rather than bunch of normal highschool anime. So try it :)

  • If you love mystery, detective shows, romance, politics, and amazing world building...you're gonna love gosick. It has everything, and the plot is just kind blowing. Lest I forget, it have one of the best endings of any show ever. This show is so underrated. A must watch
  • I have to admit that the first 2-3 episodes are not what you expect but do not make the mistake to stop watching because of that. You must keep watching to start understanding more and more the story, If you do that I can say that you will love this anime or at least you will like it. So, watch all episodes, you will not regret.
