The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.
When Wolverwine travels back through time, and wakes up in 1973, he is naked. A possible nod to The Terminator films. In those films, The Terminator travel back through time, and arrived in the past bare beam and buck naked.
The future: a dark, desolate world. A world of war, suffering, loss on both sides. Mutants, and the humans who dared to help them, fighting an enemy we cannot defeat. Are we destined down this path, destined to destroy ourselves like so many species...
(at around 46 mins) Xavier is talking to Magneto - all the time the first door they came in to the kitchen by has remained open and there is nothing to be seen. Seconds later the door is closed and as the guards enter there is now a stack of colored crates stacked against the wall in the corridor behind them.
SPOILER: The X-Films' title sequences features a weapon used by the villain of each film, backed by the X-Men's Cerebro device. In this film it is Boliver Trask's Sentinel machine, which is a mixture of circuitry and Mystique's cells.
