Beyoncé finally won Album of the Year and Kendrick Lamar pulled off two remarkable major-category victories at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night.

“It’s been many, many years,” Beyoncé acknowledged with a slight chuckle while finally accepting the prize that’s eluded her throughout her illustrious career, for Cowboy Carter. She went on to thank her many collaborators and dedicated the win to Linda Martell, the pioneering Black country artist who features on the LP.

“I hope we just keep pushing forward and opening doors,” Beyoncé continued.

The award-winning singer and actress was joined by Herbie Hancock to perform the classic song “Fly Me to the Moon” at the 2025 Grammy Awards on Sunday (February 2) at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

The 10-time Grammy nominee brought down the house with her cover of M.J.’s “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough,” complete with a moonwalk, during the ceremony’s Quincy Jones tribute on Sunday night. Monáe performed while wearing a Jackson-esque sparkly tuxedo, bedazzled socks, and sunglasses. A slew of musical artists paid tribute to the late Quincy Jones at the Grammys on Sunday night.

The music legend, who died Nov. 4, was honored with a medley of some of the hundreds of songs he had a hand in during his prolific career as a record producer, film composer, multi-genre artist, entertainment executive and humanitarian.

Will Smith introduced the tribute, calling Jones — known as “Q” to his friends — “one of the most influential and groundbreaking figures of our times.”

Smith noted how Jones changed his life “forever.” He added, “You probably wouldn’t even know who Will Smith was if it wasn’t for Quincy Jones. He made so many greats across multiple genres sound even better.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced on Monday the 207 feature films eligible for Best Picture consideration, two days before voting for the 2025 Oscar nominations begins.

There are 323 feature films eligible for the Academy Awards, but just 207 met the Best Picture competition eligibility requirements.

As stated by the Academy in a press release, “To be eligible for consideration in the general entry categories, under rules implemented for the 97th Academy Awards year, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in at least one of six U.S. metropolitan areas: Los Angeles County; the City of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas; and Atlanta, Georgia, between Jan. 1, 2024, and Dec. 31, 2024, and complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue. Feature films must have a running time of more than 40 minutes.”

But Best Picture eligibility is different. Films under consideration...

Or because of new eligibility rules that require Best Picture candidates to meet additional benchmarks for diversity and inclusion. Keeping score in streaming – never an easy prospect given the amount of data hidden away in corporate black boxes – is about to get even tougher in 2025.

Netflix will stop reporting subscriber numbers (for more than a decade the ultimate metric in streaming) as of the upcoming January-to-March quarter. The company says engagement time, operating profit and revenue offer better gauges of performance, calling the subscription tally “just one component of our growth.”

The move will open the door for rivals to follow suit (and Apple and Amazon already have ample experience with burying their streaming results under layers of semi-related tech operations). But before the fuzzier new era arrives, and along with it likely more bundling, M&a and large-scale live streams, it’s worth taking stock of the eventful year that’s now concluding.

Scarlett Johansson remains one of the most widely known actors working in Hollywood, and she's appeared in a wide variety of genres over the last three decades. Johannson is now most associated, of course, with her work in the MCU, having first joined the franchise with Iron Man 2 in 2010 as Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow. Johansson bid Marvel farewell with the release of Black Widow in 2021.

Outside of her work in the MCU, Johansson has appeared in acclaimed titles like Asteroid City (2023) and Marriage Story (2019), as well as Under the Skin (2013), a foray into horror. Johansson has also appeared in a handful of romantic comedies over the years, including Lost in Translation (2003), Don Jon (2013), He's Just Not That Into You (2009), and Scoop (2006). The actor returned to the genre once more this year, starring opposite Channing Tatum.

When it comes to horror, Blumhouse continues to be a Hollywood leader in terms of its output. The company is behind horror hits like Get Out (2017), M3GAN (2022), Hush (2016), and The Invisible Man (2021), with the Blumhouse model dating back to 2007's Paranormal Activity. Making films at low budget levels, giving filmmakers creative freedom, and releasing horror films through the studio system is how Blumhouse operates, and it's resulted in some strong slates in recent years.

Blumhouse has had a relatively strong 2024, starting the year off with Night Swim, which may not have fared well with critics but was a box office success. The same can be said for Imaginary, but the company's following movie, Afraid, failed to really connect critically or commercially. In September, however, Blumhouse released a horror movie that can be considered its best of the year, earning strong scores on Rotten Tomatoes and striking gold at the box office.

While Tatum said he really loved the way the script was originally written by Rose Gilroy, he gave director Greg Berlanti credit for really bringing the film to life by pushing him and Johansson to take their performances beyond what had been scripted. And when the White House deems the mission too important to fail, Jones is directed to stage a fake moon landing as backup as the countdown begins. Tentpoles Dune: Part Two, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Deadpool & Wolverine and TV series including Fallout and Agatha All Along lead nominations for the 52nd Saturn Awards, which recognize the year’s best genre movies and series.

Warner Bros’ Dune: Part Two topped the overall noms list with 14 including Best Science Fiction Film and acting noms for Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya among others, followed by studio stablemate Beetlejuice 2 with 13 noms including Best Fantasy Film; Warner Bros topped all studios with 35 noms.

Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine had 10 nominations.

On the TV side, Amazon MGM Studios’ video game adaptation Fallout was tops with five nominations: Best Science Fiction Television Series, Best Actor on Television (Walton Goggins), Best Actress on Television (Ella Purnell) and Best Guest Star on Television (Kyle MacLachlan). Amazon MGM had a leading 17 TV noms among the studios, while Disney was second with 11.

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films will host the 52nd Annual Saturn Awards on Groundhog Day next year, the organization announced on Wednesday.

The awards ceremony will honor the best TV shows and movies in the genre of science fiction, horror and fantasy with its annual banquet on February 2, which will stream live via Electric Entertainment’s platform Electric Now and on The Roku Channel for the first time.

Nominees for the Saturn Awards were announced this week, with Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) grabbing the top spot for the most-nominated entertainment company with 35 nominations. Wbd-owned or produced films like “Dune: Part Two,” “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” and “Wonka” were among the titles mentioned. Dune: Part Two was the most-nominated singular title with 14 potential award wins.

The small town of Wellington-on-Sea is in for a different kind of Christmas as a big blizzard separates families who celebrate Christmas together and presents Santa Claus with a few challenges to fix with his gifts. Ed Sheeran wrote a song for the film, out on Netflix Dec. 4.

After the Covid-19 pandemic hampered its rollout of sci-fi thriller Lumina, Goldove Entertainment opted to handle distribution itself instead of working with a sales agent. Plans included creating dozens of life-sized standees to advertise the movie, conducting a sweepstakes with tens of thousands of dollars in prizes and hiring a company that could get the film into theaters. At the end of the day, it spent roughly $4 million on marketing for a title it hoped to make at least $20 million the opening week.

On Monday, Goldove Entertainment sued distribution partner Wild About Movies, which allegedly lied about the number of theaters that would show the movie, for fraud and breach of contract. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, faults the company for the film’s underwhelming box office performance and seeks damages equivalent to its marketing spend.

Thanksgiving has long been a deadline of sorts for studios campaigning for Oscar nominations, because it offers the tempting proposition of a holiday weekend in which voters might have free time to catch up on movies. In past years, that meant a steady stream of screener DVDs arriving in voters’ mailboxes in the days before Thanksgiving – but now, with the Academy focusing on its members-only screening platform and placing restrictions on physical screeners, the push is to get new films into the Academy Screening Room before the holiday.

Fifteen new films were added to that room on Wednesday, a departure from the usual weekly additions, which typically come every Friday. The newcomers include Best Picture contenders “Conclave” and “The Piano Lesson,” following a Nov. 22 influx that included “Emilia Perez,” “Joker: Folie a Deux,” “Juror No. 2,” “Nightbitch,” “A Real Pain,” “The Room Next Door,” “Saturday Night” and “September 5.”

The movie tells the story of the Apollo program and how the U.S. sent the first man to the moon. After being released in theaters back in July, the film will get a streaming release on Apple TV+ beginning on December 6.

To celebrate the release, Channing and Scarlett, along with other cast members, were given the opportunity to taste the food that astronauts eat in space like liquid french fries and dehydrated strawberries.
