When British singer/actress Cynthia Erivo tackled Elphaba, the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West in “Wicked,” she was the first Black actress to play the role. That’s a key reason why her interpretation of the character played by so many stage actresses over the years is so different.

Remember when Natasha Romanoff sacrificed herself for the Soul Stone and made entire theatres cry? It was the end of an era, especially for those who have been loving the badass Avenger since her first appearance in Iron Man 2. Even though Scarlett Johansson “returned” to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Black Widow, it was melancholic for her fans to watch knowing that the film was set before the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Scarlett Johansson sure played the hell out of Natasha all these years, so much so that it is impossible for us to imagine another actress in her shoes. However, her career outside of the MCU is equally impressive, if not more. Her upcoming Wes Anderson project proves that the actress has juicy roles all lined up and ready to go!

Cynthia Erivo got a text message from a Wicked costar at a very unexpected time – in the middle of her performance at the 2025 Grammys.

Keep reading to find out more…
“Obnoxiously, I did text her while she was singing, and I said, ‘I think you are unequivocally one of the best vocalists of all time,’” Bowen admitted, via Entertainment Weekly.
He continued praising her, saying, “We were all in a literal thrall. I got my life watching all of it.”

“It’s been many, many years,” Beyoncé acknowledged with a slight chuckle while finally accepting the prize that’s eluded her throughout her illustrious career, for Cowboy Carter. Actress, singer, songwriter, and rapper Janelle Monáe can now add “Michael Jackson impersonator” to her résumé.
The 10-time Grammy nominee brought down the house with her cover of M.J.’s “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough,” complete with a moonwalk, during the ceremony’s Quincy Jones tribute on Sunday night. Monáe performed while wearing a Jackson-esque sparkly tuxedo, bedazzled socks, and sunglasses. She danced with her microphone for much of the routine, and then pushed it aside as she hot-stepped effortlessly around the stage. Watch the video:

A slew of musical artists paid tribute to the late Quincy Jones at the Grammys on Sunday night.
The music legend, who died Nov. 4, was honored with a medley of some of the hundreds of songs he had a hand in during his prolific career as a record producer, film composer, multi-genre artist, entertainment executive and humanitarian.
Will Smith introduced the tribute, calling Jones — known as “Q” to his friends — “one of the most influential and groundbreaking figures of our times.”
Smith noted how Jones changed his life “forever.” He added, “You probably wouldn’t even know who Will Smith was if it wasn’t for Quincy Jones. He made so many greats across multiple genres sound even better.”
Smith went on to talk about how Jones worked with the likes of Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Aretha Franklin and Frank Sinatra, with whom Jones formed “a musical partnership...

Clive Davis once again filled the Beverly Hilton’s international ballroom to the brim with music industry insiders as he presented his pre-Grammy celebration and concert. As always, Saturday night’s show featured a unique mix at the microphone of legends (Joni Mitchell, Barry Manilow), rising stars (Shaboozey, Benson Boone and Teddy Swims) and rock royalty (members of Black Crowes, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica).
But this year’s starry event had a new moniker on the program, billed as an “event” rather than a “gala,” due to the catastrophic Los Angeles blazes that ripped through the city last month. While the wildfires forced a pivot — the typically glamorous affair got scaled back a bit by nixing the red carpet and its crush of press and photographers — and introduced a focus on fundraising via MusiCares, music, as always, remained the start of the show. For years, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have been one of the hottest celebrity couples on the planet.
But so many of Reynolds’ fans aren’t fully aware of his immensely famous exes.
He’s been a piece of arm candy — and arguably a trophy husband — before. Including to another member of the MCU.

She was one of the most famous singers of the past decade. And, at the time, Reynolds had appeared in various Canadian shows, with his biggest claims to fame being guest spots on The Outer Limits and X-Files.

There are an assortment of reasons leading up to a film's release that make it obvious to audiences it's destined to fail at the box office. Many of the biggest box office flops in the previous year were from celebrated directors and featured a stacked cast full of beloved actors, and yet, it wasn't much of a surprise to see their box office numbers were less than ideal. Films like Megalopolis and Joker: Folie à Deux were once highly anticipated by critics and audiences as a director's passion project and promising sequel, respectively.
However, the closer it came to the films being released, the more obvious it became that they wouldn't be well-received. Many of the other box office failures that were no surprise were surrounded by discouraging conversations detailing messy productions and constantly delayed release dates. Early reviews of such films were also mostly negative and were a telltale...

Romantic comedy movies are a tough subgenre to nail down these days in terms of quality storytelling, but Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum's space-centric 2024 movie, Fly Me to the Moon, deserves a look from rom-com fans. Coincidentally, Johansson's notable release the year prior also involved elements of space. The actress was part of Wes Anderson's ensemble cast for Asteroid City, an offbeat dramedy that focused on a group attending a convention in the desert get quarantined after an alien visit. She also voiced Elita-1 in 2024's Transformers One, which reunited her with fellow MCU actor Chris Hemsworth.
Technically, Johansson's Fly Me to the Moon co-star Channing Tatum is also an MCU actor now after his cameo appearance as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine. While that was surely a career highlight for Tatum, especially since he'd been linked to the role for a decade, 2024 also saw the actor star and produce Blink Twice,...

There are 323 feature films eligible for the upcoming Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday, though a whopping 36% of those – 116 feature films – are not eligible for consideration in the Best Picture category.
The discrepancy between films that have qualified for the top category and films that are eligible in other categories comes either because the filmmakers did not attempt to qualify – likely the case for several documentary, animated or international films. Or because of new eligibility rules that require Best Picture candidates to meet additional benchmarks for diversity and inclusion. This is the second year that Representation and Inclusion Standards (Raise) have been enforced, though they did not appear to disqualify any serious contenders in the category.
Among titles excluded from Best Picture consideration are Andrea Arnold’s “Bird,” starring Barry Keoghan, Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut “Woman of the Year,” Michael Keaton’s directorial debut “Knox Goes Away,...

It's been 10 years since 22 Jump Street premiered, and now might be the perfect time to make 23 Jump Street. 21 Jump Street is a reboot of the 1980s police procedural which follows two rookie police officers who go undercover at a high school to investigate a drug operation after one of the students suffers a drug overdose. The Jump Street movies were not only a hit with audiences and critics but were also successful at the box office, proving that there was still an audience for buddy cop movies.
Despite 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street being some of Channing Tatum's best comedy movies, the third installment in the franchise did not make it past the development stage. The popularity of the franchise has raised the question about why 23 Jump Street hasn't been made, especially because the two main characters from the 21 Jump Street cast...

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Squid Game season 2.
A very particular song plays during the six-legged pentathlon scene in Squid Game season 2, episode 5 "Han Geim Deo" or "One More Game". The first three episodes of Squid Game season 2 show Gi-hun returning to the Squid Game as Player 456 to seek revenge on the Front Ma, In-ho. Many of the new Squid Game contestants – including the undercover contestant Player 001 – try to figure out how to make it out alive through the various games featured in Squid Game season 2.
While there are several shocking twists in Squid Game season 2, the most surprising of all is that the Squid Games do not finish before the season 2 finale. This sets up a cliffhanger ending at the end of Squid Game season 2, placing Gi-hun in a tragic and dangerous situation following the death of his best friend, Jung-bae. Before the finale, however, Gi-hun, Jung-bae, and In-ho all...

According to third-party analytics, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has broken a fantastic milestone - becoming the number one TV show on Disney+ worldwide. 2024 was a rough year for Star Wars, with The Acolyte - intended to serve as a spectacular relaunch for the franchise - instead leaving the fandom divided. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew failed to hit the streaming top 10 in the U.S., leading to some concern the show won't get the renewal it deserves.
The latest third-party analytics from Flix Patrol reveal the show is improving in terms of performance, though. Skeleton Crew is ranked the number 1 Disney+ TV show or movie worldwide for January 2 - and the viewership trend is exciting, because it ranks higher than movies like Deadpool & Wolverine. Even more pleasing, though, is the viewership trend over the last week - as seen on Flix Patrol's metrics.

This year, for the first time in a while, a movie gave me the boost of serotonin that only hits my brain when I’m watching a great rom-com. It happened near the end of the Netflix film Hit Man, directed by Richard Linklater and starring Glen Powell and Adria Arjona. Powell plays Gary Johnson, a college professor moonlighting as a fake hit man to help cops catch people who are trying to hire a contract killer. At this point, Gary has fallen in love with Arjona’s Madison, whom...

Mark O’Meara, a Virginia-based movie theater owner, wonders and worries constantly about what exactly his customers will buy tickets to see on any given weekend. It’s not that people have fallen out of love with the big screen, he says, they’ve just gotten out of practice. In fact, in the 30-plus years O’Meara has worked in the business, he’s had a front-row seat as the audiences who habitually went to the movies turned to streaming services instead.
“I’ll see people at the grocery store, and they’ll tell me, ‘You have nothing we want to see.’ I don’t blame them on certain weekends,” says O’Meara, who operates two venues in Fairfax County. “Nobody denies they consume content. That’s never been the issue. We’re competing with the convenience of the couch. Good movies sell no matter what the hell is going on.

Created by writer/director Hwang Dong-hyuk, the Emmy-winning “Squid Game,” Netflix’s most-watched series of all time, has returned for a second season. Season 1 of the South Korean survival thriller followed Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), a divorced father and gambling addict who joins the Squid Game in hopes of earning enough prize money to pay off his debts and support his family. Gi-hun and 455 other players attempted to pull themselves out of poverty by competing against one another in nostalgic childhood games like “Red Light, Green Light,” “Marbles” and “Tug of War.” However, they quickly discovered elimination meant total annihilation. Despite persevering as the winning contestant and taking home $45.6 billion, Gi-hun remains haunted by the experience. Unable to move forward and enjoy his immense wealth, Gi-hun is determined to dismantle the game from the inside – no matter the cost. Deeply disturbing, ultraviolent and offering new insights, “Squid Game” Season 2 is...

Keeping score in streaming – never an easy prospect given the amount of data hidden away in corporate black boxes – is about to get even tougher in 2025.
Netflix will stop reporting subscriber numbers (for more than a decade the ultimate metric in streaming) as of the upcoming January-to-March quarter. The company says engagement time, operating profit and revenue offer better gauges of performance, calling the subscription tally “just one component of our growth.”
The move will open the door for rivals to follow suit (and Apple and Amazon already have ample experience with burying their streaming results under layers of semi-related tech operations). But before the fuzzier new era arrives, and along with it likely more bundling, M&a and large-scale live streams, it’s worth taking stock of the eventful year that’s now concluding.
Streaming remains the dynamic center of the fast-shifting entertainment landscape, a siren still luring ships into the rocks.

Scarlett Johansson remains one of the most widely known actors working in Hollywood, and she's appeared in a wide variety of genres over the last three decades. Johannson is now most associated, of course, with her work in the MCU, having first joined the franchise with Iron Man 2 in 2010 as Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow. Johansson bid Marvel farewell with the release of Black Widow in 2021.
Outside of her work in the MCU, Johansson has appeared in acclaimed titles like Asteroid City (2023) and Marriage Story (2019), as well as Under the Skin (2013), a foray into horror. Johansson has also appeared in a handful of romantic comedies over the years, including Lost in Translation (2003), Don Jon (2013), He's Just Not That Into You (2009), and Scoop (2006). The actor returned to the genre once more this year, starring opposite Channing Tatum.

When it comes to horror, Blumhouse continues to be a Hollywood leader in terms of its output. The company is behind horror hits like Get Out (2017), M3GAN (2022), Hush (2016), and The Invisible Man (2021), with the Blumhouse model dating back to 2007's Paranormal Activity. Making films at low budget levels, giving filmmakers creative freedom, and releasing horror films through the studio system is how Blumhouse operates, and it's resulted in some strong slates in recent years.
Blumhouse has had a relatively strong 2024, starting the year off with Night Swim, which may not have fared well with critics but was a box office success. The same can be said for Imaginary, but the company's following movie, Afraid, failed to really connect critically or commercially. In September, however, Blumhouse released a horror movie that can be considered its best of the year, earning strong scores on Rotten Tomatoes and striking gold at the box office.

After the Covid-19 pandemic hampered its rollout of sci-fi thriller Lumina, Goldove Entertainment opted to handle distribution itself instead of working with a sales agent. Plans included creating dozens of life-sized standees to advertise the movie, conducting a sweepstakes with tens of thousands of dollars in prizes and hiring a company that could get the film into theaters. At the end of the day, it spent roughly $4 million on marketing for a title it hoped to make at least $20 million the opening week.
On Monday, Goldove Entertainment sued distribution partner Wild About Movies, which allegedly lied about the number of theaters that would show the movie, for fraud and breach of contract. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, faults the company for the film’s underwhelming box office performance and seeks damages equivalent to its marketing spend.

Thanksgiving has long been a deadline of sorts for studios campaigning for Oscar nominations, because it offers the tempting proposition of a holiday weekend in which voters might have free time to catch up on movies. In past years, that meant a steady stream of screener DVDs arriving in voters’ mailboxes in the days before Thanksgiving – but now, with the Academy focusing on its members-only screening platform and placing restrictions on physical screeners, the push is to get new films into the Academy Screening Room before the holiday.
Fifteen new films were added to that room on Wednesday, a departure from the usual weekly additions, which typically come every Friday. The newcomers include Best Picture contenders “Conclave” and “The Piano Lesson,” following a Nov. 22 influx that included “Emilia Perez,” “Joker: Folie a Deux,” “Juror No. 2,” “Nightbitch,” “A Real Pain,” “The Room Next Door,” “Saturday Night” and “September 5.”
