Every 10 years or so, Hollywood seems to fall head over heels in love with a writer. In the 1990s, studios couldn't stop turning John Grisham's legal drama/thriller novels into movies. Such was also the case with romance novelist Nicholas Sparks, starting with "Message in a Bottle" in 1999 and stretching on throughout the 2000s and a little beyond.
More recently, journalist and writer David Grann has quietly emerged as the hot new thing in Tinseltown. His book "Killers of the Flower Moon" is now a $200 million, three-hour epic directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and the screen rights to his newest work, "The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder," were acquired by Scorsese and DiCaprio before it was even published. Recent years have also seen Grann's book "The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon" and his New Yorker article...

This week, anyone invested in the entertainment industry should be following recent developments surrounding a major Hollywood actor whose three decades of success might be coming to an end.
That actor, of course, is… Jim Carrey.
As Will Smith’s slap continues to reverberate across popular culture, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” has made its way to theaters, with Carrey’s return as the gonzo mustache-twirling villain Dr. Robotnik quite possibly serving as his swan song. In an Access Hollywood interview promoting the release, Carrey said he was “fairly serious” about retirement, chalking up the decision to his “quiet life” as a painter. That would be a loss to many filmmakers whose work could benefit from his involvement, and raises questions about why he hasn’t been associated with the kind of opportunities that might keep him engaged — i.e., work from young directors and original ideas.

Jim Carrey fans might want to get their tickets now for “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” as it could be the last acting role of the iconic comedian’s career. Speaking to “Access Hollywood” this week, Carrey said he is planning to retire from acting following his reprisal of the villainous Robotnik in the upcoming “Sonic” sequel. How serious is Carrey about leaving acting behind? “Fairly serious,” he said.
“Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious,” Carrey said. “It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”
Carrey added, “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I...

After Jim Carrey won back to back Golden Globes for Best Actor in 1999 and 2000 for his acclaimed performances in The Truman Show and Man on the Moon, many industry analysts were predicting that he could become a regular contender for awards season glory if he made a concerted effort to reinvent himself as a dramatic talent despite initially rising to superstardom as a one-man variety show in a series of hit comedies.
For a while, it looked as though he would balance the best of both worlds after leading Bruce Almighty to almost $485 million at the box office in 2003 before appearing in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind less than twelve months later, but Carrey soon reverted to type and over the next decade, his star faded after he lent his name to a series of critical and commercial disappointments, offset by the odd success.

Live from New York, it’s Jim Carrey and Maya Rudolph as Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. “Saturday Night Live” published a brief teaser showing Carrey and Rudolph suiting up to portray the Democratic presidential nominee and his running mate on Thursday.
Carrey and Rudolph will appear in-character together on “Saturday Night Live” on October 3. Chris Rock is scheduled to host the episode, which will kick off the long-running NBC show’s Season 46 and will feature musical gust Megan Thee Stallion.
Rudolph previously portrayed Harris on “Saturday Night Live” and told IndieWire in August that the California senator’s selection as Biden’s running mate made her hopeful and energized her to follow the presidential election.
“It’s terribly exciting to feel like someone so incredibly worthy of the nomination has it, and someone who I admire and respect,” Rudolph said in the August interview.

Sonic the Hedgehog performed better than anyone expected over the four-day weekend, suggesting '90s nostalgia is here.
Whoever said there is no such thing as bad press might’ve been onto something—unless they were also the same great thinker who suggested video game movies were a sucker’s racket. Indeed, opening about three months after its original release date, and with major post-production CGI surgery to its title character after online backlash, Sonic the Hedgehog zipped past all expectations Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day weekend to a stunning debut.
Grossing an estimated $57 million over the traditional three-day weekend frame and a total of $68 million over the four-day holiday weekend, Sonic the Hedgehog dominated the box office this weekend and defied even the rosiest projections. In fact, studio Paramount Pictures pegged their blue devil movie as opening at $50 million over the four-day weekend, and the...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today we talk about some serious movies from iconic funny guy Jim Carrey, star of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog. After making his bones on In Living Color, the elastic performer had what is arguably the greatest movie star year ever. With The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Dumb and Dumber all coming out in 1994 to various degrees of large success, Carrey was a household name. We talk about what happened after. Joining the podcast is Evan Cutler Wattles, a filmmaker in New York City who runs the impressive production company Silentface.
Our movies include the 2001 Frank Darabont flop The Majestic, the 2005 remake Fun With Dick And Jane, the 2007 thriller The Number 23 and, finally, the based-on-a-true-crime drama Dark Crimes.

Even without the rebate Poland was attracting major international productions, including Claire Denis’ sci-fi drama “High Life,” Alexandros Avranas’ Jim Carrey-starring crime thriller “Dark Crimes,” and Steven Spielberg’s Cold War thriller “Bridge of Spies,” which earned production designer Adam Stockhausen an Oscar nomination.
Stockhausen recalls driving across eastern Germany, scouting for locations alongside Markus Bensch, the location manager for Berlin’s Studio Babelsberg, their car skirted past picturesque Görlitz—where Stockhausen had done his Academy Award-winning work on Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel”—and toward the Polish border.
Back in Berlin, the two had been struggling to find the perfect location for their period drama in a city that’s been ceaselessly rebuilt and modernized since the end of the Cold War. Netflix is out with its list of everything new coming in October, and everything that’s leaving the streaming service throughout the month.
Highlights include “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” on Oct. 11, which follows fugitive Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) as he runs from his captors, the law and his past, and Paul Rudd’s existential comedy “Living With Yourself,” in which a spa treatment promising to make him a better person ends up creating a second, better version of himself.
On Oct. 25, Eddie Murphy’s feature “Dolemite Is My Name” finds the comedy legend portraying the real life Rudy Ray Moore, described as “a comedy and rap pioneer who proved naysayers wrong when his hilarious, obscene, kung-fu fighting alter ego, Dolemite, became a 1970s Blaxploitation phenomenon.”

Netflix has confirmed that a whopping 66 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in October. Leading off the lineup is the eagerly awaited “Breaking Bad” movie, which the streaming service is billing as a “television event.” Emmy winner Aaron Paul reprises his role as Jesse Pinkman, who is on the run as his past catches up with him. The first half of the sixth and final season of the cult favorite “Bojack Horseman” will also drop this month.
Two features with awards buzz are coming to Netflix just weeks after their debuts at the Toronto film festival: “The Laundromat,” Steven Soderbergh‘s wry satire about international financial fraud that showcases Oscar darling Meryl Streep; and “Dolemite Is My Name,” a vehicle for Eddie Murphy who portrays 1970s comedian Rudy Ray Moore.

Who’s ready for some super-speed mayhem? Paramount Pictures has debuted the first official trailer for its upcoming family tentpole “Sonic the Hedgehog,” based on the widely popular Sega video game franchise of the same name. Similar to “Detective Pikachu,” this fall’s “Sonic” movie adaptation will put an animated blue hedgehog into real world settings and opposite human characters.
“Sonic the Hedgehog” stars James Marsden as a newly appointed town sheriff who travels to San Francisco and gets mixed up in Sonic’s mission to defeat the evil Dr. Ivo Robotnik. In the film, Sonic is voiced by “Parks and Recreation” favorite Ben Schwartz and is depicted as a juvenile delinquent who is not only trying to thwart Robotnik’s plan but is also trying to evade capture by the U.S. government. Jim Carrey stars as the film’s cartoonish villain. Additional supporting roles are played by Tika Sumpter and Adam Pally.

You’ve read about the best movies of 2018 — IndieWire’s staff list is topped by “Roma,” followed by “First Reformed,” “The Favourite,” “Cold War,” and “Shoplifters” — but what about the worst? As they do every year, the fine folks at Metacritic have crunched the numbers and come out with a list of the most poorly received films to come out in the last 12 months.
Dinesh D’Souza’s “Death of a Nation” has the dubious distinction of coming in at #1, but it isn’t just the worst film of 2018 — it’s the worst film in the site’s history: “Out of the 11,819 films for which we have Metascores,” the list reads, “‘Nation’ ranks as #11,819.”

Exclusive: Here’s an intriguing combination: Jim Carrey and Sonic The Hedgehog. Sources said Carrey is negotiating to star in the Paramount film in the role of Robotnik, a villain in the live action/CGI adaptation of the hit Sega video game. Sonic must stop Dr. Eggman from completing his plans for world domination is basically the gist of this one.
Sonic the Hedgehog has spanned several iterations from Sega consoles in the 1990s to mobile fan and absorption into the Nintendo Mario Brothers video game universe. Every crime reveals a story in this bold, unsettling Euro noir thriller starring a startlingly different Jim Carrey as a hardboiled detective in a story where the question isn’t whether you’ll uncover dark secrets, but when.
Jim Carrey commands the screen in this exciting new direction for the iconic actor, bringing to life a broken and well-weathered detective desperate to fan the last passionate ember that remains before his self-destruction. Carrey more than holds his own even opposite the equally powerful Charlotte Gainsbourg and Marton Csokas, whose own stand-out performance conjures a charismatic, yet tormenting antagonist who is as unpredictable as the twisted story.

Romanian actor Vlad Ivanov is known to many abroad for his role as the amoral underground abortionist in “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,” the 2007 Cristian Mungiu film that heralded the country’s New Wave when it won in Cannes. The stage and film performer, who serves on this year’s Transilvania Intl. Film Festival main prize jury, is these days transitioning into international work with the likes of Jim Carrey (“Dark Crimes”) and with a leading role in “Sunset,” the new film by Oscar-winner Laszlo Nemes (“Son of Saul”). For Ivanov, it’s all about roles with new challenges, he tells Variety.
When you’re viewing a film as a jury member are you focused mainly on the actors’ performances?
No, with this jury it’s very cool because we can discuss script, acting, directors…

In “Dark Crimes,” Jim Carrey wears a grayish beard, cropped hair, and the jacket and turtleneck of a silently dissident Slavic literature professor from the mid-’60s. His character, named Tadek, is actually a Polish police officer, and Carrey speaks in an accent that’s so whispery and vague I got the feeling that if he were playing a Polish plumber back in his “In Living Color” sketch-comedy days, he might have worked that much harder to make his inflections authentic.
Tadek is a detective who got demoted to the lowly job of records-room clerk after a botched investigation. Desperate to win back his status, and his dignity, too, he seizes on a murder case that no one else will touch, maybe because it involves a sex club frequented by his boss. Throughout “Dark Crimes,” Carrey broods and stares like an actor who’s out to muffle any hint of...

The latest Jim Carrey film entitled “Dark Crimes” casts him as a detective investigating the murder of a prominent businessman. The film was made in Poland and offers a dark subject matter and role for the once former stand-up comedian.
Carrey wanted to perform from a very young age and when he was just 10 years old wrote to “The Carol Burnett Show” offering his services as an impressionist. While his request was politely declined it would only be another decade before Carrey was all over television with his antic comedic act. He ultimately achieved the brass ring for comedians of this era when he got to appear on “The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.” In 1984 the 22-year-old Carrey was cast as the lead in a TV series called “The Duck Factory” which was supposed to be a star-making vehicle for the actor. Despite its prime placement on NBC’s Thursday...

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.
You can thank Avengers: Infinity War spill over and May’s most anticipated blockbuster Solo (open May 25) for leaving the four week month rather spare where it concerns studio pictures despite being the start of summer. I’d steer clear of the month if I were an executive too—heck, three of the posters highlighted below aren’t even “true” theatrical releases (two hit Netflix with the third making its bow on HBO).
As any cinephile knows, however, there are always a few strong pictures banking on the oft-discussed counter-programming position.

Jim Carrey’s paintbrush strikes again. The comedian’s new portrait of Fox News host Sean Hannity is going viral after debuting on Carrey’s official Twitter page Monday night. The painting has earned more than 5,000 retweets and 27,000 likes in under 11 hours. The image depicts Hannity as an endangered fish creature and has a caption that reads: “Some endangered species aren’t worth saving!”
The portrait is Carey’s latest scathing critique of a prominent Republican figure. Jim Carrey takes on an incredibly serious role in his latest film project Dark Crimes. The movie is a murder mystery crime thriller, in which Carrey plays a police officer who is hunting down a killer in the dark underworld of sex crimes.
We've seen Carrey make serious films before, but this one definitely looks like it could be his darkest yet. The story follows a police officer named Tadek, "who finds similarities between an unsolved murder and a crime outlined in a book by famed writer Krystov Kozlow (Martin Csokas). As Tadek begins to track Kozlow and his girlfriend, a mysterious sex club worker (Charlotte Gainsbourg), his obsession grows and he descends into an underworld of sex, lies, and corruption to find the shocking truth."
The movie is based on a true story that was told in a 2008 New Yorker article titled, "True Crimes – A postmodern murder mystery", by David Grann.

"We have a suspect - a crime writer..." "I think the book is your confession." Saban Films has released an official trailer for a dark crime thriller titled, of course, Dark Crimes. The title is a variation of the title for the original article this is based on in the New Yorker, called "True Crime", subtitle "A postmodern murder mystery." Dark Crimes stars Jim Carrey as a detective who gets involved in a case where a Polish author killed someone in real life the same way as in one of the fictional crime novels he wrote. Marton Csokas plays the author, and the cast includes Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kati Outinen, Vlad Ivanov, Agata Kulesza, Robert Wieckiewicz, and Piotr Glowacki. This loos quite dark and mysterious, but also quite good, I'm intrigued. Especially by Carrey's fierce, bearded performance in this. I really want to check it out. Jim Carrey has been making headlines more for his paintings than his acting as of late, but that could soon change thanks to “Dark Crimes.” The crime thriller from Greek director Alexandros Avranas brings Carrey back to the big screen in his first leading role since “Dumb and Dumber To” in 2014.
“Dark Crimes” stars Carrey as a tormented police officer named Tadek who discovers an unsolved murder and sex crime bares similarities to a famous novel by author Krystov Kozlow (Marton Csokas). Tadek sets out on a mission to link Kozlow to the murder, but his investigation leads to a dangerous fascination with the author and his girlfriend, a mysterious sex club worker played by Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Avranas is best known as the director of “Miss Voices,” which premiered at the 2013 Venice Film Festival and won the Silver Lion for Best Director. The trailer finds Avranas channeling the grim mystery...

Jim Carrey likes to mess with people. Using 100 hours of behind-the-scenes footage from Milos’ Forman’s 1999 Andy Kaufman biopic “Man in the Moon,” Carrey and director Chris Smith created “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond,” a documentary that details Carrey’s aggressive Method approach to portraying Kaufman and his abrasive, lounge-singing alter ego Tony Clifton. It shows that Carrey baffled everyone on set and beyond it, crashing parties and workplaces in character as he burrowed so far inside the role no one was sure he’d come back. Pitched somewhere between a punchline and psychosis, the result was one of his most remarkable, lived-in performances in a career filled with jarring slapstick creations.
“It was a choice as an actor to have Andy come back and make his movie, to push me aside,” Carrey said during an interview in Toronto to promote the documentary, which Netflix recently acquired. “I was wondering...
