Earl Burtnett was a band leader and performs here with his band that were regulars at the Biltmore Hotel. No, the hotel was NOT connected with the Biltmore estate in Tennessee but was a fixture in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, while Burtnett gained some fame, his career was cut short when he died of complications following surgery for appendicitis--he was only 39.
Here the band consisting of 12 men perform a couple songs and Burtnett plays the piano and introduces the tunes. It's all relatively pleasant entertainment but it's surprising the tone of the second song. Instead of the late 20s big band style (like the first), this is a rather high- brow violin piece--with Burtnett playing accompaniment and later a xylophonist joining in as well. None of of it particularly impressive when seen today and it's a relatively unexceptional short compared to many others. Pleasant but nothing more.
