Avoiding the heady and idyllic world of adolescent coming-of-age tales ever-familiar to viewers, Spanish writer-director Carlota Pereda presents a brazen look into the psyches of youth; their faults, rage, and insecurity. In this award-winning short-turned-feature, Pereda, known for nudging the boundaries of genre, delivers a roundhouse kick, annihilating them.
“Piggy” (“Cerdita”) is set in a serene but suspect rural town, Extremadura, where our anti-heroine Sara (Laura Galán) emerges, wrought with anxiety and crippling trauma from the abuse she endures at the hands of her hostile and popular peers. Untamed cruelty ensues and, with each heartbreaking take, the viewer becomes Sara and all of those mixed-up emotions she holds tightly inside.
Sold by Charades in international and represented for the U.S. by XYZ Films, “Piggy” relays an unnerving tale that sets the tone for introspection. The trouble lies not only with the youth and its folly but within the town...

XYZ Films has struck a first-look production deal with Toronto- and Los Angeles-based producer Lee Kim, who produced Sundance sci-fi title “Dual” and oversees Resolute Films and Entertainment.
Under the deal, XYZ and Resolute will jointly produce a number of titles per year, with a focus on films helmed by diverse directors and international co-productions, particularly with Kim’s native Canada.
XYZ and Resolute most recently collaborated on Riley Stearns’ “Dual,” which is playing in Sundance’s U.S. Dramatic Competition. The film, which was shot entirely in Finland during the pandemic, follows a woman who must go to battle with a clone of herself that she commissioned when she thought she was dying. It stars Karen Gillan, Aaron Paul and Beulah Koale.
Previous XYZ/Resolute collaborations include Matt Johnson’s “Operation Avalanche,” which premiered at Sundance in 2016 and was released by Lionsgate; Anthony Scott Burns’ supernatural thriller “Our House,...

Forget Jay Gatsby, Forrest Gump, and Fievel Mouskewitz, no fictional character so thoroughly embodies the American dream as Jenna Maroney. Conceived on a toilet, born on a kerb, and raised in a swamp, Maroney flew to fame and fortune on a rocket built from desperation and a pathological need for attention (why should babies get all the fuss? They’re not the only ones who can fit both feet in their mouths).
Born Ystrepa Grokovitz to parents Verner and Werner, and brought up in Toilet Cove Swamp, Jenna was a natural performer from a young age, gracing many a Florida child pageant stage and at Christmas, regaling mall staff with carols to distract from her mother’s shoplifting. She boasts a seventh grade education and a diploma from the Royal Tampa Academy of Dramatic Tricks, at which she majored in game show pointing and theatre superstitions. It all changed for...

Given the caliber of queens remaining in the competition, it’s hard to believe that we’re only three episodes into RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 6. At this point, every sashay is a doozy.
Speaking of eliminations, Episode 3 began with the time-honored tradition of the remaining queens revealing whose lipstick they just chose. In the case of Jiggly Caliente, everyone apparently voted for her except Trinity K. Bonet, who admitted to picking Yara Sofia. This wasn’t a huge shock, considering Yara previously admitted to choosing Trinity’s lipstick, but I’m not buying her explanation for a second. Trinity...

Paris-based Charades Films has boarded Carlota Pereda’s rural thriller “Piggy” (“Cerdita”), one of the most awaited feature debuts of the year from Spain.
Written and directed by Pereda, “Piggy” is produced by Morena Films and France’s Backup Media, the outfit behind “Still Alice,” “Submergence” and Ari Folman’s Cannes entry “Where Is Anne Frank.” Charades will handle world sales rights on “Piggy,” while Filmax, a frequent backer of first time directors, will distribute the film in Spain.
Starring Laura Galán, Richard Holmes and Carmen Machi, “Piggy” expands on Pereda’s short of the same title which marked her breakthrough as a film director and won 90 awards, including the Spanish Academy Goya Award for best short film in 2019, the José María Forqué Award for best fiction short and a Slamdance Russo Brothers Fellowship.
Though “Piggy” represents her feature debut, Pereda has an extensive C.V. as a director and writer.

“The Masked Singer” has been teasing a “game-changing” wild card twist all season long, and viewers will finally get to see it explained when the third episode airs Wednesday, March 24. Don’t worry — it’s not as complicated as it seems.
After Group A contestants Raccoon, Robopine, Russian Dolls and Seashell have all taken the stage, guest host Niecy Nash will introduce the first wild card costume of Season 5. Once this mystery celeb performs, they’ll be eligible to be voted out just like their fellow competitors. In other words, Raccoon, Robopine, Russian Dolls and Seashell could all advance to the next round if the new character fails to impress. Think of the wild card less like a twist and more like a late addition to the group.

When the Walt Disney Company purchased Jim Henson’s The Muppets in 2004 it seemed like a match made in heaven. Both companies connected with children and adults for decades, so what better opportunity than to bring them together?
That being said, since owning the Muppets, Disney hasn’t known what to do with them. Outside of two theatrical features — the last released six years ago to solid reviews and middling box office — and a short-lived sitcom with a convoluted backstory, the Muppets generally have been relegated to short features and commercial opportunities. The arrival of Disney+ left many fans believing the Muppets would finally get a chance to entertain families in a proper venue.
It wasn’t until last year’s D23 that audiences heard about how Disney planned to use the Muppets. The brief commercial for “Muppets Now” was vague, doing little more than announcing that something was coming...

Unto most every TV-watching generation, a new Muppets show is born. The original “Muppet Show,” which ran from 1976 to 1981, had Jim Henson’s felt puppets take over a vaudeville theater to perform songs, slapstick sketches and more unabashedly cheesy puns than its bewildered guests could count. The “Muppets Tonight” reboot, which ran a single season from 1997 to 1998, swapped the theater for a television studio, where the Muppets frantically threw together a variety show while letting the audience in on all the drama happening in the control booth. A sour 2015 follow-up (“The Muppets.”) tried for a “30 Rock” meets “The Office” vibe, imagining a world in which Miss Piggy had a late-night show and the rest had midlife crises. Whether tap dancing with rat puppets, trading quips with celebrities or exploring TV’s most enduring on-and-off relationship between Miss Piggy and Kermit, every iteration of “The Muppet Show” tries to mix...

“Murmur,” from director Heather Young, won the Narrative Feature Grand Jury Prize from the 26th Slamdance Film Festival, the festival announced at its awards ceremony at the Treasure Mountain Inn in Park City, Utah on Thursday night.
The jury at the festival also recognized Merawi Gerima’s “Residue” with an honorable mention, and “Residue” also took home the audience award for narrative feature.
“We congratulate the winners of Slamdance 2020 and we celebrate all of our new filmmakers who have shown us that the art of filmmaking is brilliantly alive,” Slamdance co-founder Peter Baxter said in a statement. “This next generation collectively brings us art formed in risk taking, bravery and the unexpected. Heather Young’s drama “Murmur” has been selected as the winner of the narrative feature grand jury prize at the Slamdance Film festival.
The movie, which won the Fipresci Discovery Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival, stars Shan MacDonald as an older woman who, while performing community service at an animal shelter, begins compulsively adopting pets to ease her loneliness. Merawi Gerima’s first feature, “Residue,” won an Honorable mention from the jury and the Audience Award for Narrative Feature.
“The Grand Jury Award for Narrative Feature goes to Murmur, the quietly devastating debut feature from Canadian filmmaker Heather Young,” the jury said. “This richly detailed and deeply humane drama offers an insightful and sympathetic portrait of a lonely woman — affectingly portrayed by newcomer Shan McDonald — who goes to self-destructive extremes while attempting to fill the gaping void in her life. Cannes–The Pop Up Film Residency, a mentorship program launched this year by former TorinoFilmLab artistic director Matthieu Darras and Slovak producer Juraj Krasnohorsky, has announced three new residents, four new hosts, and two new creative partners for 2019.
Based in Bratislava, the program offers a three-week residency in Slovakia each month, along with a series of international residencies throughout the year with a growing network of partners, including Cannes Critics’ Week, Eave and the Doha Film Institute.
“The big difference between this residency and other support schemes for talents is that it’s really tailor-made,” said Darras. “Once we really get an understanding of the person, the project, we actually find the good residency.”
A former Cannes Critics’ Week programmer, Darras described the Pop Up Film Residency as a “passion project” designed to offer mentorship on an intimate scale. “I have 20 years of experience running labs, where I usually have programs with 20, 25 projects,...

Cannes–Seven first-feature projects will be pitched to an audience of industry professionals at Focus CoPro’, an event hosted by Cannes’ Short Film Corner that will take place Tuesday May 21 at the Palais des Festivals.
The pitching session, which is run in collaboration with Nisi Masa and the Pop Up Film Residency, was introduced last year as a way to support early-career filmmakers looking to make the leap from short to feature films. This year’s edition will build on the success of the inaugural program with an expanded scope, according to Short Film Corner head Camille Hébert-Bénazet. “This year is our second edition and we are expecting more people, especially buyers, residences, labs, film funds and more producers,” she said.

Annecy, France — John Kahrs’ “Age Of Sail” and Jan Pinkava and Mark Oftedal’s “Piggy” are two of the four state-of-the art-animated Vr projects that Google Spotlight Stories (Gss) has brought this year to Annecy. For the third year running, Gss – a division of Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (Atap) group – and Google Vr are partnering with Vr@Annecy, a non-competitive category of the official selection.
At a Studio Focus Session on Wednesday presented by Gss, titled “Animation Everywhere,” the projects’ creators discussed their shorts while exploring the storytelling capabilities of Vr, as well as the limitations and possibilities of 360 immersion. The panel was moderated by Gss’ executive producer Karen Dufilho and Pinkava, Gss’ creative director. Panelists included Kahrs, directors François-Xavier Goby and Hélène Leroux (“Back to the Moon”), and artist Céline Desrumaux, production designer in “Age.”
Kahrs took home the best animated short Oscar and an Annie Award in 2013 for his hybrid “Paperman.

Hollywood's next action hero: Ed Skrein on stepping into Jason Statham's shoes and fighting Deadpool
Three years ago Ed Skrein broke through on the big screen with roles in Brit flicks Piggy and Ill Manors. Now, after a brief stop over on Game of Thrones, he's poised to become Hollywood next big action star thanks to The Transporter Refuelled, a fresh take on the franchise previously led by Jason Statham.
Beyond that Skrein will be heading into Fox's Marvel universe to play assassin Ajax in Deadpool. Digital Spy caught up with the fast-rising actor to discuss his two hotly-anticipated movies.
How did Transporter Refuelled get pitched to you - is this a reboot or sequel to the previous films?
"From the beginning, everyone's always spoken about it in terms of when they would change personnel on Bond, that it would keep the same variables and the same things that the franchise is known for. But the change of personnel would change quite a lot of things,...

Former "Game of Thrones" star Ed Skrein will take over the role of Frank Martin in the $30 million reboot of the "Transporter" franchise at EuropaCorp.
Jason Statham played the role in the previous three films, while Chris Vance took on the role in the TV series version. This proposed new trilogy of films features a younger Frank Martin which 30-year-old Skrein will now take on.
Though he's had roles in films like "Ill Manors," "The Sweeney" and "Piggy," Skrein is probably best known for his work in the role of Tyroshi warrior and Daenerys love interest Daario Naharis in the most recent season of "Game of Thrones".
Skrein played the role in the final three episodes of the third season, but isn't returning to the role for the upcoming fourth season. Michiel Huisman is now taking over that part.

If Sansa ever had any hope that a knight in shining armor would save her from all her troubles, that should have been duly quashed in "Second Sons." "Game of Thrones" followed through on one of four promised weddings in this week's episode, making Sansa go from a Stark to a Lannister in one sad affair.
Now that Sansa has tied the knot with Tyrion, it remains to be seen if Cersei can somehow get out of her marriage with Loras, if Margaery still walks down the aisle with Joffrey and if Edmure will be able to successfully marry one of Walder Frey's daughters. With only two episodes left to go in Season 3, there are still a lot of loose ends to tie up and apparently no happy marriages in store for anyone.

Director/writer: Kieron Hawkes. Cast: Paul Anderson, Martin Compston, Josh Herdman, Neil Maskell and Louise Dylan. It is sometimes interesting when a film explores a character's psyche. This is the case with first time director Kieron Hawkes' Piggy. Joe (Martin Compston) is the subject of the psychological exploration and the results are a little vague. The journey to this conclusion is enjoyable as a psychological thriller should be, with Joe accepting a darker more sinister side. Joe is the protagonist and he is disaffected by modern society. Set in London, Joe goes to work, numbs himself with booze, and then rinses repeats. He is a character with social anxiety; he fears others and a darker part of himself. That shadowy side is projected in the character Piggy (Paul Anderson). He is an imaginary friend returned from his childhood after the violent death of his brother brings his world into turmoil.

★★☆☆☆ There is much to admire in the approach London Film School graduate Kieron Hawkes has taken in writing and directing his debut feature Piggy (2012). Forgoing the traditional British gangster film tropes for a morally conscious (if skewed) mediation on the justification of violent retribution, Hawkes inaugural outing is at times taught, claustrophobic and thoroughly grim, but ultimately falls short of being a cogent whole. Ken Loach's Scottish discovery Martin Compston adopts a cockney accent to play a shy, mild-mannered London messenger boy who goes into a deep depression following the murder of his beloved elder brother by a band of hooligans. Then the demonic Piggy (Paul Anderson) enters his life to lead him on a horrendous revenge trip. Capable but monotonous, it ends with a predictable twist that has a distinguished literary lineage.

London seems to be awash with potentially violent males lurking on every street corner, ready to explode with pent up rage given the right situation – if homegrown cinema is anything to go by. Debut writer-director Kieron Hawkes’ Piggy is another depressingly gritty tale of modern-day woe from the UK capital’s ‘mean’ streets that follows a vengeful angle to justify its brutal onslaught. Even the most hardened viewer will find this genuinely beautifully shot film tough to stomach, with little respite or acceptable explanation as to how its protagonist goes from loathing violence to cold-hearted and mindless thuggery.

In the comedy American Reunion, all the American Pie characters we met a little more than a decade ago are returning to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion. In the comedy American Reunion, all the American Pie characters we met a little more than a decade ago are returning to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion. This British thriller starring Martin Compston doesn't leave much time for subtleties amid the head-stampings
It's a British rite-of-passage crime thriller, because it opens with a closeup of the protagonist's face and a voiceover that says "That's me". Me on this occasion is Joe (Martin Compston), an insomniac sufferer of social anxiety who gets paid a visit by confident, violent "Piggy" (Paul Anderson) shortly after the murder of his brother. Piggy, free to enact the grisly retribution that Joe's incapable of, could be a Durden-esque alter ego (Anderson plays him with a similar swagger) – but between the beating and the stamping on heads, we're not given much time to decide.

Piggy is Kieron Hawkes’ feature debut and tells the brutal story of a young drifter whose life descends into a terrible spiral of murder and revenge when he and his brother suffer a life-changing incident.
Paul Anderson, Martin Compston, Josh Herdman and Kill List’s Neil Maskell head up the cast and in this exclusive clip, which is by no means safe for work of any kind, we see the terrifying interrogation scene which shows the dark heart of Hawkes’s film and which propels the film towards its bleak conclusion.
The film is out in UK cinemas tomorrow, here’s your clip.
