Aspiring singers perform auditions in front of 4 coaches who have their backs turned to them. If a coach likes the voice they hear, they turn around, and the contestant then gets to decide which one of the coaches they want to work with.
Despite reaching an audience of seven million for the final on BBC One, original winner Leanne Mitchell's debut album only reached 134 in the album chart and sold fewer than 1,000 copies in its first week. She was subsequently dropped by record label Decca.
It's obvious the judges make their decision before the contestant starts performing.
