Hollywood has, in recent years, truly begun to crack the code on video game movies. The impressive success of adaptations such as "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" has cemented the fact that we've truly turned a corner in that regard. That being the case, just about every major video game is probably going to be targeted by studios in the coming years, and Grand Theft Auto will undoubtedly be on that list. Interestingly enough, though, a truly excellent movie set in the world of GTA recently hit theaters, and with the full support of GTA creator Rockstar Games, no less.
One would be forgiven for not knowing about it since it's kind of a small movie, but the documentary "Grand Theft Hamlet" recently hit theaters via the folks at Mubi. For those who aren't aware of it, as the title implies, it mashes together the worlds of GTA and William Shakespeare,...

The Academy Awards nominations for 2025 will be announced on Thursday, January 23, by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott. You might have to get up a little early to see the noms, though. That is especially true if you work in the Hollywood film industry.
The Oscars themselves will be held on Sunday, March 2, from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and the host will be (thankfully) Conan O'Brien. Will he be part of a ceremony that hands out a lot of awards to Netflix movies? Maybe.
One Netflix film seems like not only a shoo-in to be nominated for Best Picture, but likely to win. More on that in a second. Here is everything else you need to know.
How to watch and stream the 2025 Oscar nomination (and see if Netflix gets lucky)
If you want to watch the awards being announced, you are in luck because there are an abundance of ways to tune in.

Nominees for the 2025 Oscars will be announced on Jan. 23 — and one category that’s notoriously difficult to forecast is Best Documentary Feature. The Academy shortlist winnowed down the potential nominees to 15 films, but this year’s precursor awards have been all over the map. We’re also dealing with the Documentary Branch of the Academy — a group that has proven to be unpredictable.
In 2024, Gold Derby’s combined odds were able to forecast just two of the five nominees: The eventual winner, 20 Days in Mariupol, and Four Daughters. Scratched from the list were the Producers Guild of America’s top choice, American Symphony, along with Beyond Utopia, which had stacked PGA, Directors Guild of America, and BAFTA nominations, and the Emmy and National Board of Review winner, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie. So what have we learned?

Think of how gaming has often been reified in the cultural consciousness — as a waste of valuable time, as a source of questionable values, as a solitary activity that only begets further isolation. Much of the public sees video games as nothing more than digital junk food in contrast to the meat and potatoes of real life. But for most who game, the experience is more than entertainment — it’s an important feature of their lives. Who is to say what brings meaning and magic to a person’s day? Gamers, then, don’t necessarily need The Remarkable Life of Ibelin — a new documentary directed by Benjamin Ree (The Painter and the Thief) about the rich online life of one particular World of Warcraft fanatic — to validate their truth, but the emotional portrait of how powerful these interfaces can actually be will certainly resonate. The documentary tells the story...

For the Oscar-shortlisted documentary “The Remarkable Life of Ibelin,” director Benjamin Ree made several unique choices. The film tells the story of a young Norwegian man, Mats Steen, whose battle with muscular dystrophy makes it challenging for him participate and connect with others. Steen begins spending all his time online, playing video games, particularly the role-playing hit “World of Warcraft,” where he goes by the name Ibelin Redmoore. When Steen died at 25, his family learned that Steen had lived a whole life though the game, making friends and affecting the lives of others. They are taken aback by the outpouring of support from the online community and learn about the impact Steen had on so many.
To tell Steen’s story, Ree not only pulled from real text chats that took place in the game, but also animated the interactions in the “Warcraft” style by employing artists he found on YouTube.

Many documentaries were made about famous people like Elton John, Celine Dion, and Christopher Reeve, but none of them made the Academy’s shortlist for Best Documentary. However, Elton John’s brand-new song “Never Too Late” made it to the Original Song list.
The Documentary Branch of the Academy looked at 169 qualified films and chose 15 finalists. Festival favorites and politically charged works made up most of this list. Ten of the chosen documentaries had their world premieres at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, and others were shown at important events in Berlin, Venice, and Toronto.
“Elton John: Never Too Late,” directed by R.J. Cutler and David Furnish, gained notoriety for its title song, even though celebrity-focused films often face major rejection. John told Deadline some things he knew about how the song was made. He said Brandi Carlile wrote it after seeing an early version of the documentary. “When she came up with this song,...

As winter awards season has kicked into full gear, it already seems like voters on the television side of things are looking toward the past more so than anticipating what new series will be feted in the next year.

There are 323 feature films eligible for the upcoming Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday, though a whopping 36% of those – 116 feature films – are not eligible for consideration in the Best Picture category.
The discrepancy between films that have qualified for the top category and films that are eligible in other categories comes either because the filmmakers did not attempt to qualify – likely the case for several documentary, animated or international films. Or because of new eligibility rules that require Best Picture candidates to meet additional benchmarks for diversity and inclusion. This is the second year that Representation and Inclusion Standards (Raise) have been enforced, though they did not appear to disqualify any serious contenders in the category.
Among titles excluded from Best Picture consideration are Andrea Arnold’s “Bird,” starring Barry Keoghan, Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut “Woman of the Year,” Michael Keaton’s directorial debut “Knox Goes Away,...

An elderly woman turns to a camera over her shoulder and, staring into the lens, says without self-pity, “I’m dying.” Incarcerated men, unaccustomed to wearing suits and ties, anxiously adjust their attire in preparation for a daddy-daughter dance behind bars. According to my Letterboxd I didn’t give any film that came out in 2023 the heralded five stars but this year I’ve given that score twice, and a lot of four and a halves to go with. Scores are, of course, arbitrary, but it’s interesting to look back and see how things have played out on a macro level. It’s been a great year for cinema visits too, with lots of screenings locally as well as a day trip to the Prince Charles Cinema in London to watch David Lynch’s Inland Empire. What a wonderful, baffling fever dream (nightmare?) of a film. Watching it on the big screen with a loyal, and slightly stoned, audience was one of those experiences that just got me hyped about cinema again. Will definitely...

The State of the Race
Ever since “My Octopus Teacher” won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature at the 93rd Academy Awards it has felt like the Academy’s Documentary branch has not just avoided voting for most contenders they deem too populist, but for any contenders distributed by the film’s distributor Netflix as well.

Will & Harper, the Netflix documentary about comedic actor Will Ferrell and his friendship with SNL pal Harper Steele who came out as trans, earned a spot on the coveted Oscar documentary feature shortlist today.
It wasn’t the only shortlist honor for the film directed by Josh Greenbaum. The tune from the closing credits – “Will and Harper Go West,” written by SNL alum Kristen Wiig and Sean Douglas and performed by Wiig – got shortlisted for Best Original Song (Douglas is the son of actor Michael Keaton).
But another high-profile documentary in the running for the shortlist didn’t make the cut: Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, about the late actor who was paralyzed in a horse-riding accident. That film, directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, recently won Best Documentary Feature at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards, and last week earned a nomination for the Producers Guild of America Award.

Oscar shortlists are like exit polls released on Election Day before balloting has ended: they’re the best information yet available about how actual voters are feeling, but they don’t necessarily tell you the whole story.
In Tuesday’s announcement of this year’s 10 shortlists — which were, as always, chosen by different branches of the Academy, not the full membership — we saw a terrific show of strength from Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, with a field-leading six mentions; and very solid showings from Universal’s Wicked, with four; and Fox’s Alien: Romulus, Apple’s Blitz, Warners’ Dune: Part Two, Paramount’s Gladiator II and Universal’s The Wild Robot, with three each.
But the fact that, say, Neon’s Anora, Searchlight’s A Real Pain and Amazon/MGM’s Nickel Boys showed up on none of the shortlists is actually not an indication that they are failing to resonate with the Academy.

There’s a big difference between critics groups telling awards groups what they should watch, and lists that represent actual Oscar voters. The shortlists, announced on Tuesday, are actually long lists in 10 Oscar categories, revealing the contenders for animated, documentary, and live-action shorts, crafts such as Hair & Makeup, Sound, and VFX —the branches will soon mount show-and-tells for the voters, or “bakeoffs” — Original Score and Song, and Best International Feature and Documentary Feature.

There's a forthright quality to the choices in this year's Oscar documentary shortlist, with challenging themes and controversial politics tackled upfront in a way we haven't always seen from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Relatively few cater to the comfort narratives of which Hollywood is fond, and there's some low budget indie work getting well-deserved attention.
Curiously, Kneecap, which has done really well elsewhere and dominated the BIFAs, didn't make this shortlist but does appear as Ireland's submission on the Best International Feature Film Shortlist.
The final set of nominations will be narrowed down on 17 January.

Fifteen movies each are moving forward in the contests for International Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Original Song, Music Score and Documentary, Animated and Live Action Shorts. Ten films each also advanced in the categories of Sound, Visual Effects and Makeup & Hairstyling.
Celebrating the Oscar shortlists the most today undoubtedly is Emilia Pérez with a towering six mentions, missing only from the Visual Effects list of possible inclusion, though that would have been a longshot. This sets up a possible huge showing for Jacques Audiard’s film, which could also land two Best Song nominations, the only film to have a pair among the finalists.

For his Oscar-contending documentary The Remarkable Life of Ibelin, filmmaker Benjamin Ree drew inspiration from literary sources as much or more than cinematic ones.
“One of my main interests is dramaturgy… and structure,” he says over a breakfast of an omelet and waffles in Amsterdam. “I’m obsessed with that, and I’ve been studying that my whole life.”
In his Netflix film, Ree explores the journey of Mats Steen, a young Norwegian man with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a terminal condition that causes progressive weakening of the heart and skeletal structure. Despite the physical limitations caused by the disorder, Mats lived a rich life in the online World of Warcraft game – where his avatar was the powerfully built, able-bodied Ibelin. In that setting, Mats made many friends and impacted people far and wide, but his parents had no idea of their son’s vibrant virtual experiences until after his passing...
