Harley Quinnjust aired its Season 5 finale, and while there is no official announcement for Season 6, the series' showrunner has plans for the future. Harley Quinn's latest season of television shook up the formula by having Harley (Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) move to Metropolis in a very Superman-centric season that brought in characters like Lena Luthor, Lois Lane, and Brainiac. However, the season ended with Harley Quinn and Ivy back in their old Gotham City apartment from the beginning of the series, surrounded by their friends and family stronger than ever. The season's final moments don't tease a new threat but instead show Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy jumping out of their apartment to go out in Gotham City.
Following the finale, Harley Quinn showrunner Dean Lorey spoke with Collider about the open-ended finale for Season 5. While he hopes to see it continue, the finale ends on a positive note,...

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Harley Quinn season 5, episode 1Harley Quinn season 5 might not have been talked about much before its release due to the focus on James Gunn's DC Universe, but I have to say it will likely turn heads. I'm a fan of the show and the expanded universe it has created, which now includes a Kite Man spinoff series. That kind of worldbuilding, presenting a lived-in world from the start full of established heroes and villains, is exactly what Gunn is going for with the Dcu, and Harley Quinn could teach the franchise some lessons.

Harley Quinn Season 5 Score (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Harley Quinn returns for its fifth season on Max, continuing its unconventional take on DC’s most chaotic anti-hero. Despite DC struggling for over a decade, the unapologetic form of Dr. Harleen Quinzel has thrived, branching out three Margot Robbie movies in the DC Extended Universe and now surpassing even Batman: The Animated Series’ four-season run. Not to mention, it has also gotten a spin-off, Kite Man: Hell Yeah!
While it is devotedly followed by a strong fanbase, early reviews suggest cracks in Harley Quinn’s continued success. Once again voiced by The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco, the latest season debuted with an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes—a notable drop from its earlier highs. While 89% seems respectable, it pales compared to the show’s perfect 100% ratings for Seasons 2 and 3. Even Season 4 saw a dip to 96%, making this consecutive decline in critical reception hard to ignore.

Among the slew of exciting movies and shows hitting Max in January, one of the most enticing offerings is the season 5 return of DC's beloved Harley Quinn animated series. The fifth season of Harley Quinn is coming right off the back of 2024's spin-off series, Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, the most recent addition to the new DC Animation timeline. The distinctively foul-mouthed nature of the writing mixed with the sheer joy of DC's worlds and characters fuse perfectly to create something that stands apart from the plethora of comic book adaptations out there, and fans surely can't wait to meet up with this ragtag bunch as they face all-new threats.

Harley Quinn is one of the most interesting offerings DC has ever had. Clearly taking inspiration from both Margot Robbie's version of the character and DC Comics, the TV-ma animated series has no fears, exploring several different corners of the DC Universe. Following Creature Commandos season 1, those wanting another dose of bloody, hilarious adult animation with DC characters should check out Harley Quinn season 5. The new year of the TV show makes a good case for why James Gunn should keep it around for years to come as an Elseworlds project.
Developed by Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Dean Lorey, Harley Quinn is a Max original series focusing on Harley Quinn, the former therapist led astray by the Joker. The show sees Harley learn that the Joker truly doesn't love her and decides to find her place in the world without him - and cause a little mayhem along the way.

Warner Bros. Discovery just made its first move into continuing the new DC Universe. James Gunn’s adult animated series “Creature Commandos” will be returning for Season 2.

The release change for one DC show has made me even more interested in it and the tease of its mysterious spinoff. The main DC Universe release timeline being established has confirmed a number of neat projects are on the horizon for us, with a considerable range of installments - from the Superman movie and Supergirl: The Woman Of Tomorrow film to more unexpected releases starring the likes of Swamp Thing and Booster Gold - set to debut in the upcoming years. However, there's also still a lot outside of the mainline Dcu that holds fascinating potential for DC and its future.
Indeed, with the roster of releases not centered in the main Dcu timeline becoming smaller than before, the movies and shows that still exist as part of the Dcu's Elseworlds banner - that is, releases set in another universe outside of the central Dcu one - have become all the more interesting.

A new Lex Luthor is preparing to debut on the big screen in 2025 with Nicholas Hoult playing the iconic supervillain in James Gunn's Superman. Perhaps this performance will be better received than the last time an actor portrayed a live-action Lex Luthor on the big screen.
In the Dceu, Jesse Eisenberg portrayed Lex Luthor, appearing in Zack Snyder's crossover movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. There were tentative plans to do more with the character in the Dceu, but they never materialized, due in part to Batman v Superman struggling with its reviews. During a recent interview for the Armchair Expert podcast (per The Playlist), Eisenberg addressed the film's poor reception, confessing he felt embarrassed to admit that it negatively impacted his career. Harley Quinn never lets us down, y'all. The brash and outrageous animated iteration of the iconic DC Comics character — starring Kaley Cuoco as the loud-and-foul-mouthed baddie — is one of the most fun superhero offerings happening on screen today (big or small). And they will do all that and more when the new set of episodes premiere on Max starting January 16, 2025, as was announced with the release of the trailer, which you can watch below.

The hierarchy of power in the DC universe just changed. As the Arrowverse bows out with the ending of “Superman & Lois,” its shared universe is giving way to the next attempt by DC to build a cinematic universe, this time stretching across TV and film. James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios kicks off not with a big-budget theatrical four-quadrant blockbuster, but with a gory, gnarly and irreverent animated TV show. At its core, “Creature Commandos” is essentially a sequel to Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” a story of a team of superpowered freaks treated as monsters — who are sent to a foreign country and discover that maybe the authorities should not be entirely trusted, all while becoming a found family that cares for one another because no one has cared about them before — in a project accompanied by plenty of gore, guts, swears and a killer soundtrack.

Creature Commandos might seem like an odd choice to be the first new project of James Gunn’s tenure running DC’s film and TV operations. Why kick off this post-Snyderverse era with a gory and frequently sad animated spinoff of Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, populated largely by DC Z-listers like GI Robot and Dr. Phosphorus, plus public domain characters like Frankenstein’s monster and his Bride? Why not go straight to Gunn’s Superman film, and save the quirky obscurities until after the brand has been more properly rebooted?...

Batman: The Animated Series is so beloved in part because of its broad scope. It told stories of every kind within the framework of its noir-themed Gotham City, encompassing everything from borderline horror to straight-up comedy. That gave it a tremendous amount of creative freedom, which Paul Dini and his colleagues turned into something magical.
The flexibility extended to characters as well, and Batman: The Animated Series introduced a whole rafter of Batman's supporting cast for the first time. The big one is Harley Quinn, of course, but their ranks also include the likes of Renee Montoya, Nora Fries and The Condiment King. Mary Louise Dahl holds an honored place among them, despite appearing in just two episodes. Her introduction, "Baby-Doll," is one of the strangest -- and greatest -- episodes in the entire series. Given the success of The Penguin, there seems to be a good chance that another spinoff series will be forthcoming for Matt Reeves' The Batman. The potential series would need to get the approval from DC Studios to move forward, but DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn has hinted that one unique villain would be quick to have a spinoff greenlit.
On the social media platform Threads, Gunn recently debunked a rumor that a new spinoff series for The Batman would follow Barry Keoghan's Joker. A DC fan followed this up by asking Gunn if there might instead be a series in the cards for Condiment King, one of the more obscure but highly memorable villains from Batman's Rogues Gallery. Possibly in jest, Gunn responded, "I'll back a Matt Reeves Condiment King series right now. Ball is in Matt's court."

If you're a fan of DC Comics, the past few years have probably been pretty tough for you. A merger at Warner Bros. led to the cancellation of a slew of movies and TV shows set within their cinematic universe, and new owners at The CW also resulted in the cancellations of multiple DC TV shows that had been dominating the network for the past decade.
Yeah, it's been rough out here for DC fans. The good news is that a new DC Universe is coming from Peter Safran and James Gunn, but it's going to take some time before it comes to fruition (animated series Creature Commandos is debuting in December and Gunn's own Superman movie doesn't come out until next year). That means there will still be a prolonged period of time without much DC TV content on our screens - unthinkable this time just three years ago.

Joaquin Phoenix's Joker gets a partner in both romance and crime in the new movie Joker: Folie Deux. The movie introduces Lady Gaga as a new incarnation of Harley Quinn, though director Todd Phillips is suggesting that fans should not get their hopes up about seeing the character getting her own spinoff film.
Per Variety, the director and stars of the Joker sequel were asked questions while on the red carpet at the movie's Hollywood premiere. Phillips was asked if he would want to develop a standalone movie for Gaga's "Lee," as her version of Harleen Quinzel is referred to in the film. The director suggested that this wasn't an avenue he was looking to go down, feeling like the Joker sequel is already a standalone film in many ways compared to the first movie.

Harley Quinn creator Justin Halpern confirmed that they initially created an original supervillain for the hit adult-animated DC series. This comes ahead of the show's upcoming fifth season, which is expected to premiere sometime in November.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Halpern opened up about their scrapped plans to debut an original character called Brownstone in the Harley Quinn series. He revealed that Brownstone would have first been introduced as a superhero, who later became a supervillain due to an embarrassing moment. "We had also created our own superhero that we wanted to have, [a] supervillain that we wanted to have in our crew, who was named Brownstone," he explained. "But everyone called him Brown Stain because during a high profile rescue as a hero, he sh-t his pants on live TV. And so everyone called him Brown Stain, and then that's what turned him into a villain, because he was so upset at that.

Before the formation of DC Studios, Warner Bros. brought many of its characters to television. Some like The Flash and Superman were well known to fans; others - the Doom Patrol and Human Target, for example - were not.
The plan moving forward is for the vast majority of live-action projects to take place in the Dcu, meaning we're likely to see fewer comic book heroes and villains on-screen.
In a recent interview with The Direct, Dean Lorey, the creator of animated TV shows Harley Quinn and Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, revealed that he briefly worked on a Hitman TV series for Syfy based on the little-known but still popular character.
Kite Man: Hell Yeah! has featured appearances from several characters tied to Hitman's world, something which now makes a lot more sense.
"Because we established the bar Noonan's, that sort of naturally led to some Hitman characters," he told the site.

Dean Lorey, the creator of Harley Quinn and Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, revealed that he was once developing a show for DC Comics' Hitman.
Many probably do not know of Hitman aka Tommy Monaghan, a fringe character from DC Comics. The anti-hero was first introduced in 1993 as part of the Bloodlines event.
Tommy is a highly talented assassin from Gotham City who also happens to have a small dash of superpowers, including telepathy and X-ray vision. Due to his powers, he specializes in completing hits targeting metahumans and supernatural beings, which has led him to numerous encounters with Batman, Superman, and other major heroes over the years.

Imagine a whacky sitcom starring Vanessa Hudgens, Danny Pudi, Alan Tudyk, and Ron Funches. Sounds like a recipe for success, right? Now... set it in the DC Universe. Powerless was a canceled sitcom, created by Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, which ran for only 12 episodes before being canceled by NBC. While showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker have since found major success with the animated shows Harley Quinn and Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, Powerless was considered a major failure by NBC, despite its modest, but dedicated fan base.

After the “Harley Quinn” animated TV show proved to be such a success that it survived two streaming services, it got the classic sitcom treatment of having popular characters get their own spin-off series. That’s how we got “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!” an animated sitcom in the vein of “Cheers” starring the titular powerless villain buying a bar with his girlfriend, Golden Glider.
After a season of common, everyday issues like moving in together, managing a business, and finding a time-traveling toilet in your apartment, the season finale paid off the big serialized storyline of the season — the hunt for the Anti-Life Equation, which was hidden at Noonan’s Bar by Lex Luthor. Kite Man and Golden Glider realize that this formula gives the holder control over the minds of sentient beings, and in the finale, they come up with a brilliant plan to pull an “Exorcist” and have...

After watching a range of Bane's misadventures in Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, I still can't decide if I love or hate the DC show's version of the character. Bane has a unique place in Batman's rogues gallery, being well-known to broad audiences, but with relatively little adaptation onto the big or small screens. With Bane's Knightfall story being one of my first "big" comic reads, and The Dark Knight Rises releasing as my love of superheroes began to truly blossom, I've always had a soft spot for Bane that has made his comparative lack of adaptations feel like a true shame.
As such, Bane becoming a quasi-main character in Kite Man: Hell Yeah is something of a relief, as the DC animated show features the character in a capacity that is really above any series prior. However, this makes its distinct depiction of Bane all the more crucial, and makes...

Harley and Poison Ivy's relationship developed from colleagues to lovers, showcasing female empowerment and friendship in the comics and TV show. Season 1 of Kite Man: Hell Yeah! shows Harlivy as a solid couple enjoying life, while Kite Man moves on from his heartache. Fans can expect potential future team-ups between Kite Man, Harley, and Ivy, creating quirky situations and drama in the Gotham City Sirens lore.
The following contains spoilers for Kite Man: Hell Yeah! Season 1, now streaming on Max.
One of the most engaging aspects of the Harley Quinn TV series was the dynamic between Harley and her soulmate, Poison Ivy. Of course, they didn't just start out as lovers. They were colleagues and friends before romance bloomed.
Unfortunately, conflict set in, and it left Harley questioning if she and Ivy were meant to be together. Season 4 revealed cracks in the relationship that seemed to be papered over by the time it ended.

DC's new Kite Man: Hell Yeah! animated series is already off to a great start. Spinning off from the animated Harley Quinn television series, the new show follows the exploits of supervillains Kite Man/Charles Brown (Matt Oberg) and Golden Glider/Lisa Snart (Stephanie Hsu) as they embark on a new chapter of their lives. The literal partners-in-crime and partners-in-love take up running Noonan's, a dive bar frequented by Gotham's lesser super-criminals. After introducing their relationship in Season 3 of Harley Quinn, Kite Man: Hell Yeah! picks up with Kite Man and Golden Glider still together and completely supportive of one another. In the series premiere, "Pilot, Hell Yeah!," they decide to buy Noonan's to keep it as a safe haven for the dregs of Gotham City's criminal underbelly. What makes Kite Man: Hell Yeah! so refreshing is beginning the story with the main pairing already established right off the bat,...

After the first three episodes of “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!” focused on the acquisition of the bar Noonan’s and Kite Man and Golden Glider’s relationship, the fourth episode of this “Harley Quinn” spin-off takes a bit of a turn. After helping the couple move in together, Bane uses their new bathroom — and finds himself back in the ’80s, accidentally (or very much willingly) changing the future. That’s right, it’s a time-traveling superhero episode, but instead of a hot tub or a DeLorean, it’s a toilet that lets you go back in time.

Lately, in between reviews of swanky limited series and dramas desperate to be “Game of Thrones,” I’ve been using my non-work-related TV time re-watching “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” What a comfort. What a joy. What an escape. The weary modern world is filled with I.P.-driven franchise extensions and comedies that aren’t really comedies, whereas Moore’s iconic ’70s sitcom gets laughs every other sentence from its simple setting in snowy Minnesota. Credit to the phenomenal cast (somehow Ted Knight and Ed Asner’s five Emmy wins in six years weren’t enough), the smartly designed, blessedly humble studio apartment (her new digs in Season 6 are more offensive than the episode where Murray professes his love for Mary), and good jokes elevated by a precise understanding of their punchlines. I can’t tell you how often I’ve burst out laughing because of a clever twist on the expected kicker,...

Whether it’s DC’s animated comedy “Harley Quinn” or its spinoff series, “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!,” vulgar language and bloody violence are center stage for every episode. Katie Rich, a writer and executive producer on both, relishes that the shows’ villainous protagonists allow her and her team to crank up the “naughtiness” a few notches.
