Unexpected, filled with erotic tension and discovering the spiritual dimension of existence. The cinema of Chihiro Ito seems to belong to an alternate reality. The audiences of Five Flavours will have a chance to see two films of the artist whose cinema is a breath of fresh air in recent Japanese independent cinema. The director herself will be the Festival guest.
Chihiro Ito may not yet be a household name in the world of film, but the Japanese director has already proven she has a lot of talent and sensitivity. She may be just beginning her career as film director, but her artistic output has been recognized for years – she has been a successful writer, screenwriter, and playwirght. Before turning to the camera, she wrote a few novels and film scripts (including one for Isao Yukisada).

A gentle stillness revives itself at the end and beginning of every breath, its vibrancy tangible when tuned into its frequency at each precise moment. It is a calmness, a small measure of peace, seldom found under the neon buzz of a megacity such as Tokyo or any given metropolis around the globe wherever the urban frenzy is ceaseless. Life far removed from time's boorish grasp – its frantic march toward the inevitable, its relentless demand for toil and progress – finds a gentler purpose: an opportunity for spiritual detoxification, a glimmer of strength to face the past head-on. For lurking in the periphery, obscured by shadow, are the ghosts and demons in constant pursuit, and no amount of running can keep them at bay forever. In “Side by Side”, Chihiro Ito painstakingly curates this serene tapestry in which Kentaro Sakaguchi's Miyama eschews his trauma and makes his escape.

“Like & Share” from Indonesia’s Gina S. Noer was named the best picture and collected the Grand Prix on Sunday at the Osaka Asian Film Festival.
“All of us on the jury were struck by the film’s clear and powerful message, which affirms young women’s sexual curiosity and desire while clearly saying no to sexual violence. The style of the film is also original. The sweet, poppy feeling that fascinates the audience in the first half of the film becomes darker as the story progresses, making us shudder. “Like & Share,” with its strong message and brilliant direction, is a film that needs to be seen now more than ever,” said the jury in a statement.
“This movie is talking about how we deal with trauma and how we deal with sexual violence. It’s not easy to tell and it’s not easy to make a movie about it,...

David Fincher loves doing an insane amount of takes. Much like Stanley Kubrick, who revelled in using exhausting methods on-set, Fincher is a stickler for pushing his actors beyond reasonable expectations in search of the perfect take. Before filming started on "The Social Network," the director reportedly told Justin Timberlake he was going to have him repeat scenes until he'd, "gone past memorizing it, gone past knowing [his] own name, until we can get all of the physical nonsense so ingrained that we can get to what the actual text is." Jake Gyllenhaal also spoke about his experience on "Zodiac," telling The New York Times, how he'd, "do a lot of takes, and [Fincher] would turn, and he would say, because he had a computer there, 'Delete the last 10 takes.' And as an actor that's very hard to hear."

At the end of 2011, the number of digital projectors in movie theaters officially surpassed the number of analog film projectors. This was the final step in a years-long technological revolution that had been raging for the better part of a decade. In the early 2000s, digital film -- while looking grainy and amateurish at the time -- was touted as the Next Big Thing, and many companies began to slowly make the shift. Anyone who saw "Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones" in theaters likely recalls the grainy, dim quality of digital projection at the time.
In Christopher Keneally's 2012 documentary film "Side by Side," Keanu Reeves interviews a spate of experienced filmmakers on the general state of film technology, and many of them, perhaps surprisingly, came down in favor of digital photography. Cameron Mackintosh, the London theatre owner and impresario, nixed the idea of having a host introduce artists performing at Tuesday’s one-night-only Old Friends tribute show honoring the legacy of musical theatre genius Stephen Sondheim, who died in November at age 91.
“All you need are Steve’s words and music, and our cast. They speak, or rather sing, for themselves,“ Mackintosh explained to Deadline before the star-studded event began at London’s Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
Worked like a treat. Thirty minutes saved, because Old Friends wasn’t lumbered with a host.
In any case, no one needed to introduce actress Julia McKenzie when she walked onto the stage, for it was she who, with Mackintosh producing, was part of an ensemble that super-spread Sondheim in the West End over four decades ago with a revue entitled Side By Side by Sondheim.
She’s one of the composer and lyricist’s foremost interpreters.

Showbiz careers have no logic because there are too many unpredictable factors: audiences’ fickle tastes, industry perceptions and, of course, luck. But even given the elusive nature of career success, Keanu Reeves is unique.
For one thing, he is stronger than ever after a 35-year career, showing a longevity that might have surprised even his ardent supporters in the 1980s.
Most actors would be thrilled to have one successful film franchise, but Reeves — who celebrates his 57th birthday on Sept. 2 — has three: “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” which in 1989 established him as a comedy actor; plus “The Matrix” (1999) and “John Wick” (2014), both of which put him in the pantheon of action heroes.
Reeves, who is of Hawaiian, Chinese, English, Irish and Portuguese heritage, made his professional debut in 1984, with small roles in various TV series, then made his big-screen bow in “Youngblood” (1986), which tapped into his skill at hockey.

Penned by Danish screenwriter Kim Fupz Aakeson (“Dancers”), HBO Europe’s new show “Welcome to Utmark” is one buzzy contender for this year’s Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize, whose announcement on Feb. 3 marks one highlight at the Göteborg Festival TV Drama Vision.
The eight-part series, produced by Norway’s Paradox, represents a clear bell-weather to HBO Europe’s ambitions for Scandinavia, mixing some of the finest talent in the region, led by Icelandic director Dagur Kári (“Virgin Mountain”) and lensed by Norwegian Dp Andreas Johannessen.
The result is a modern Western, set on the northern margins of Norway, on Sami territory where breathtaking landscape often steals the show. Dramatic opening shots of a sweeping barren landscape set the scene for the viewer. Over nearly three decades, the small studio has furnished series like “Last Chance Highway,” about a woman who saves animals, to Animal Planet, and various programs about the U.S. Coast Guard to The Weather Channel. In honor of Stephen Sondheim’s 90th birthday next March, London’s Queen’s Theatre will be renamed Sondheim Theatre after the influential American composer and lyricist. This will make Sondheim the only living artist to have a theatre named for him both in the West End and on Broadway.

Keanu Reeves is a wonderfully mysterious man who has been in an endless number of films. He has the net worth to show for it, too: somewhere north of $350 million, according to various reports. The Canadian-American actor has the type of quirky personality that we look for in a best friend, and while we can't say that our relationship with him is on that level just yet, we can only wish for that sort of thing before going to sleep at night. But as Keanu fans, we've seen him demonstrate his wisdom, along with his obvious talent for acting. And then there's his extreme generosity, which seems to go unmatched in Hollywood. This man, quite frankly, has one of the longest résumés on the planet.
According to some unverified reports, Keanu has an estimated net worth of $360 million. As you might recall, the actor got his start in movies like Youngblood,...

Just when we thought we couldn’t love Ariana Grande any more, she shows us her impeccable impression of Celine Dion — proving that she really is one dangerous woman! We got a glimpse of it earlier this week when she recreated the Titanic with James Corden on The Late Late Show and nailed Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On." But nothing could prepare us for this! Ariana reunited with James Corden to have an epic Carpool Karaoke session. The host simply complemented Ariana’s pitch and it led to something magical. “You practice how to do that by listening to Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child, right?” James asked. The “No Tears Left to Cry” singer answered,“right.” “So you just listened to it over and over?” questioned James. “Whitney [Houston], Mariah [Carey], Celine [Dion], Destiny Child… yeah, the divas.” She continued to say, “It took me a minute to find my...

Ariana Grande impersonated Celine Dion, enjoyed a Starbucks piggyback ride and sang several of her biggest hits for The Late Late Show‘s latest installment of “Carpool Karaoke.”
The vocalist showed off her mimicry skills after host/driver/duet partner James Corden asked about Grande’s diva-like vocal runs. She recalled growing up listening to and emulating elite singers like Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Beyoncé – a skill that developed into impersonation. Grande performed part of Dion’s 1989 hit “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” complete with a fake onstage intro.

Keanu Reeves may not appear in another “John Wick” movie until next year, but with “Siberia,” the moody action star gets to flex a different sort of muscle — his producing skills. Taking on double-duty as producer and star for the third time since 2010’s “Henry’s Crime,” Reeves has thrown his weight behind a project that fuses his instincts for suspense and comedy.
“It was a script that I helped develop so it was dear to me in a different way, and that’s part of the reason why I was producer on it,” Reeves told IndieWire. “Creatively, it was challenging because of the tones it mixes — it’s a thriller, it’s a romance, there’s some comedy, not quite comedy but humor in it, so I was really interested in the tonal complexity and ambition.”

Kate Middleton was front and center at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's wedding and Trooping the Colour, but now it's time for her to enjoy the rest of her maternity leave. The duchess gave birth to her third child, Prince Louis, on April 23, and her maternity leave is expected to last approximately six months, which means she'll likely return to her royal duties in October. It also explains why we haven't seen her at Royal Ascot this year.

Part of the Jerry Lewis tribute A Mubi Jerrython. This article originally appeared in La Furia Umana’s Jerry Lewis dossier. It is republished with the kind permission of the author. On September 18th, 1955, Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin hosted the Colgate Comedy Hour for the 27th time. It would be six months before they began shooting Hollywood or Bust, after which their preposterously successful union dissolved. But from 8 – 9Pm on a studio set at NBC, they continued to work their alchemical comic magic, two perfectly poised bodies wreaking ingratiating destruction. These Colgate Hours are the closest approximation we can get of their fabled live performances, which were filled with unrehearsed pranks and ebullient anarchy. At the 21 minute and 35 second mark, a sketch begins that captures my imagined vision of their stage shows - a tongue-in-cheek tour-de-force of tightly sprung tension and a series of controlled manic releases. The side by side comparisons of The Room and The Disaster Artist are kind of hilarious. Maybe it’s the difference in acting that really sets them apart or maybe it’s the fact that James Franco actually has to try and lower his standard to the level of Tommy Wiseau. Is it really mean if it’s true? Enough people have commented on how bad The Room is at this point that it should have been given a parody quite a while ago. The mere fact that it is now is testament to how many people have been buzzing, for some reason,

This trial was, in no uncertain terms, a mess. The O.J. Simpson Trial was among the biggest legal circuses that has occurred in the last few decades and it was somehow believed that this media storm was worthy of a TV show. Of course since we now see the case of the Menendez Brothers and Aileen Wuornos on TV and in movies then it must be okay to start glamorizing such moments not for posterity, but for the sheer entertainment value. That’s about all it is folks, a chance to make money on a tragedy and the joke that came

This is just flat out eerie. The overlapping dialogue between Mindhunter and the Ed Kemper interviews that took place in real life are almost word for word and with the same deadpan, lack of emotion that made them so creepy. The real Ed Kemper killed a lot of people, mostly women, in the early 1970’s and was so nonchalant about it that he wasn’t even caught, he gave himself up. That’s right, Ed Kemper, a serious threat to the public and a self-confessed murderer, gave himself up without a fight. But why? It might seem horrible to ask that question

Praised for its realism and intensity, Jacques Becker’s 1960 prison break drama “Le Trou” is now bound for a pristine-looking 4K restoration, thanks to Rialto Pictures and Studio Canal. A nerve-wracking drama based on a true story, the film is adapted from the book “The Break” by ex-con José Giovanni and has been hailed as not just one of French cinema’s best films, but perhaps the best. (Lofty, we know.)
Based on a 1947 escape attempt enacted by five prisoners at France’s La Sante Prison, Becker used a slew of non-actors — including Jean Keraudy, who actually participated in the daring events the film portrays — to tell a gripping story that remains one of cinema’s most unnerving depictions of real-life drama.
