“Emilia Pérez” star Karla Sofía Gascón has set her first project after controversy erupted in January over her past offensive tweets. The Oscar nominee revealed that she will lead “The Life Lift,” a psychological thriller co-starring Vincent Gallo and directed by Italian first-timer Stefania Rossella Grassi. According to the film’s synopsis, Gascón is set to play a psychiatrist who “embodies both God and the devil.”
Gallo, the controversial director and star of “The Brown Bunny” and “Buffalo ’66,” is set for a role in “The Life Lift” as a tormented character named Gabriel, who lives in a small New York apartment and becomes persecuted by Post-its left in the building’s elevator. These messages “order him to commit atrocious murders of three other tenants who, in turn, want to kill their next-of-kin,” reads the film’s promotional materials, obtained exclusively by Variety.

A new series is in the works based on the books that inspired Ang Lee’s 2000 classic “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
The series is in development from Sony Pictures Television and is intended for release via Amazon Prime Video. Though Amazon has been good about mining the IP from the MGM library, it was Sony Pictures Classics that originally released Lee’s film.
Jason Ning, a producer on “Lucifer,” is the writer and executive producer on the new “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” series, which will be based on five Crane-Iron Pentalogy book series by author Wang Dulu. The film from 2000 was based on the fourth book in the series, also titled “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” that was serialized beginning in 1941.

New films from Wes Anderson, Richard Linklater and the Dardenne brothers will premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Cannes organizers announced at a press conference in Paris on Thursday.
Anderson will be back in Cannes with “The Phoenician Scheme,” which premiered a baffling trailer at CinemaCon last week. Linklater is heading to France with a bold movie, “Nouvelle Vague,” which tackles the sacred ground of Jean-Luc Godard and the filming of “Breathless” in the 1960s. The Dardenne brothers have “Young Mothers,” which gives them a chance to become the first filmmakers to win the Palme d’Or three times.
Actors in the festival making their directorial debuts include Scarlett Johansson, who is in Un Certain Regard with “Eleanor the Great,” starring Joan Squibb; and Harris Dickinson, the star of the Palme d’Or winner “The Triangle of Sadness,” with “Urchin.”

Days ahead of the anticipated press conference unveiling the lineup, Cannes Film Festival’s chief Thierry Fremaux has managed to keep a certain mystery around this year’s Official Selection, despite the numerous predictions flourishing on social media.
Even “Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning” hasn’t been officially confirmed by neither Cannes nor Paramount, but Fremaux tells Variety in an exclusive interview that he’s hoping to get a final go from the studio soon.
Rolling off back-to-back milestone editions that saw Cannes-bowing films go on to win Oscars, such as “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” in 2023 and “Anora,” “The Substance,” “Emilia Perez” and “Flow” in 2024, Fremaux suggests he’s received a record number of movies, especially from the U.S.
While some have suggested that the 2025 edition feels like the first post-strike Cannes, Fremaux says it “seems that Hollywood is in a period of transition.

Cannes is back: The 78th French film festival returns May 13-24 with a wave of world premieres that will set the tone for the movie year ahead. Just look at last year’s bounty: “Anora” won the Palme d’Or from a jury led by Greta Gerwig, played Telluride and Toronto, and went all the way to five Oscar wins for Best Picture, Best Director/Writer/Editor Sean Baker, and Best Actress Mikey Madison. Ted Sarandos, co-ceo of Netflix, met with Donald Trump in December at the then-President-elect’s Mar-a-Lago compound in Florida. But according to Sarandos, the two didn’t “talk shop.”
The Netflix boss, speaking Friday at the Paley Media Council event “Beyond the Stream: A Conversation with Ted Sarandos” in New York City, said it was the first time he met Trump. “We had a nice long dinner together,” he said.
Asked by interviewer Ben Smith, editor in chief of Semafor, whether Trump tried to sell Sarandos on the documentary featuring his third wife, Melania — the rights to which were acquired by Amazon — Sarandos said, no, Trump did not. Is Trump a fan of Netflix? “He said Melania and [son] Barron were big fans,” Sarandos said.
Meanwhile, Smith continued, did Amazon “overpay” for the Melania doc? (Amazon is reportedly shelling out $40 million for the film and docu-series about the First Lady.) Sarandos said he didn’t know.

ReFrame and IMDbPro 2024 ReFrame Report on Gender and Hiring in Film shows that 30 out of the 100 most popular films of 2024 received the ReFrame “stamp” for gender-balanced productions.
Among those films are “Wicked,” “The Substance” and “Emilia Perez.”
The 2024 ReFrame Report on Gender and Hiring in Film suggests that despite little improvement in gender-balanced hiring over the last five years and lower budgets being allocated to these projects, Stamped films deliver at the box office.
Findings also show that significant progress towards parity was made on camera, with little change made behind the camera in both above- and below-the-line roles.
Since the brief climb captured in the first few years of the report between 2017 and 2019, progress for parity in feature films has stalled, with 30% or fewer projects receiving the ReFrame Stamp for the past five years.

According to Sundance and Wif’s ReFrame study out Wednesday, movies that feature gender-balanced casts and crews are more profitable than those that just employ mostly men.
However, only 30 of the 100 most popular films of 2024 actually meet the criteria for a ReFrame Stamp based on gender-balanced production, per IMDbPro data.
“Since the brief climb captured in the first few years of the report between 2017 and 2019, progress for parity in feature films has stalled, with 30% or fewer projects receiving the ReFrame Stamp for the past five years,” the study shared. “Despite their smaller share across the Top 100, Stamped films over-index on profitability, comprising half of the 10 top-grossing films in 2024, with ‘Inside Out 2’ following in ‘Barbie’s’ footsteps as a Stamped film with a female lead that topped both the year’s domestic and worldwide box offices.”

Hollywood has made great strides in the direction of gender equality in the industry. But according to Only Murders in the Building star Selena Gomez, women still bear the brunt of criticism in some aspects of entertainment.
During an appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty Podcast with her fiancé, Benny Blanco, Gomez spoke candidly about her struggles with shutting out the noise. "I was also going to point out that women have it much worse," she said, after Blanco said the criticisms don't really bother him. "From my perspective it's pretty wild, and I think this isn't news to anybody, that obviously women have a lot more intense feelings from their appearance to what they're wearing to everything."
Gomez also admitted that what some people say about her appearance online does have an effect on her. "When I get prepared for an event, 90% of the time I'm just like,...

Will the realities of capitalism sink the awards hopes for Mickey 17, a movie that’s a forceful critique of the realities of capitalism? Released on March 7, the Bong Joon Ho science-fiction farce has earned just $40 million in North America and $110 million worldwide, which, according to Variety, may result in a loss of up to $80 million for Warner Bros., the film’s distributor. (There is some dispute about that figure’s veracity; the film cost a reported $118 million before marketing.) Still, despite the negative headlines about its box office and a middling response from general audiences — ticket buyers rated Mickey 17 with a B grade on CinemaScore, which, counterintuitively, is poor for a project at this scale — there is still some hope Mickey 17 might rebound with Oscar voters next year.

Awards season might be done, but it’s clear that Karla Sofía Gascón still feels raw about her chances of Oscar glory being dashed by her historical social media rants.
The Emilia Pérez star was on course to make history as the first openly transgender actress to win an Academy Award when journalist Sarah Hagi uncovered her questionable X/Twitter missives dating back to 2016.
In posts that went unnoticed by Netflix, Gascón wrote that Islam was a “hotbed of infection for humanity,” described George Floyd as a “drug addict swindler” and said that the 2021 Oscars were an “ugly” “Afro-Korean festival” after triumphs for Minari and Judas and the Black Messiah.
She also pondered that she does not “understand so much about the world war against Hitler, he simply had his opinion about Jews,” and regularly used a Spanish word that translates as “faggot” in English.

The Spanish performer, who became the first transgender woman to be nominated for a best actress Oscar, was dropped from the film’s campaigning materials by its studio, Netflix, and criticised by colleagues and prominent politicians after the series of old racist and Islamophobic tweets came to light.

From Conan O’Brien’s hosting to Indie and original releases’ dominance, this year’s Oscars was received pretty well among the film community, at least for the most part. The Emilia Pérez movie, which has been at the center of controversy since nabbing four Golden Globe wins, caused a massive uproar after landing a whopping 13 nods at the Oscars.

Despite the Karla Sofía Gascón controversy that torpedoed her Oscar campaign for “Emilia Pérez,” the Spanish actress is not persona non grata at Netflix.

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos discusses whether the scandal surrounding Karla Sofía Gascón’s tweets destroyed Emilia Pérez's chances of winning Best Picture. After receiving 13 nominations and seeming like it was the favorite of the awards season, Emilia Pérez only won two Oscars, and Best Picture went to Anora. This turn of events proved to be among the 2025 Oscars' biggest snubs and surprises and raises questions about whether a Netflix original movie will ever win Best Picture.
While speaking with Variety, Sarandos does not fault Gascón for being the reason Emilia Pérez didn't win Best Picture and breaks down the other factors that were in play. He clarifies that he does not think the Oscars have anything against Netflix, as they have been the most nominated studio in the past three years. Believe it or not, Karla Sofia Gascón is still welcome on the Netflix lot.
Despite creating a media firestorm around her groundbreaking film “Emilia Pérez’” and its run at this year’s Academy Awards, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos says the company would be open to working with the actress again.
“Yeah. You have to have some grace when people make mistakes,” said Sarandos during a cover story with Variety marking his 25 years of employment at the streaming giant. “And we have grace.”
Following a smash debut at last summer’s Cannes Film Festival, “Emilia Pérez’” was plunged into chaos in January when incendiary old social media posts from Gascón were resurfaced – the death of George Floyd, the Muslim community and even diversity at the Oscars were referenced and inspired great offense. The controversy came as Jacques Audiard’s drug cartel musical was the frontrunner for best picture, earning a top...

Selena Gomez can now count iconic auteur Francis Ford Coppola among her fans. The “Emilia Pérez” star recently received praise for her “Sunset Blvd” music video, which references Coppola’s 1982 musical “One from the Heart.” And Coppola himself took to social media to thank Gomez for revitalizing interest in his underrated feature.
“Thank you, dear Selena Gomez for including an influence from an old grandpa’s work in your music video ‘Sunset Blvd,'” Coppola wrote. “It’s wonderful to see an homage from ‘One From The Heart’ live again in your beautiful and capable talent.”
Gomez, in turn, wrote, “Thank you Francis Ford Coppola for being an inspiration to us all!”
“One from the Heart” has been top of mind in Hollywood recently: The Gene Kelly-choreographed musical was cited by the “Joker: Folie à Deux” team as an inspiration for the sequel. “One from the Heart: Reprise,” which...

“Emilia Pérez,” “Wicked” and “The Wild Robot” were the top film winners at the 75th Ace Eddie Awards, which took place on Friday evening at UCLA’s Royce Hall, nearly two weeks after the Oscars and nearly two months after the Eddies’ original date of Jan. 18. The ceremony held by the American Cinema Editors was postponed in January due to the wildfires that raged through the L.A. metro area earlier this year.
Wins by Juliette Welfling for “Emilia Pérez” and Myron Kerstein for “Wicked” stood in contrast to the outcome at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, when Sean Baker won film editing for “Anora.” Last year, “Oppenheimer” and “The Holdovers” won at the Eddies, and “Oppenheimer” went on to win the Oscar. In the six-plus decades that the American Cinema Editors have been giving out awards, one of its feature-film winners has then won the Oscar for Best...

Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” the embattled musical crime thriller about gender confirmation, was the surprise Feature Dramatic Editing winner, Friday night at the 75th annual Ace Eddie Awards (held at UCLA’s Royce Hall).
Besting such contenders as “Conclave” and “Dune: Part Two,” “Emilia Pérez” editor Juliette Welfling cut against the start and stop rhythms of traditional musicals with sequences that flowed naturally from dialogue to musical moments in this operatic fever dream, starring Best Supporting Oscar winner Zoe Saldaña and controversial Best Actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón.
In addition, Jon M. Chu’s maximalist “Wicked” musical beat out Sean Baker’s Oscar-winning “Anora” in the comedy category. Editor Myron Kerstein excelled at handling the tonal shifts and blending different genres to explore the volatile friendship between Elphaba/the Wicked Witch (Oscar-nominated Cynthia Erivo) and Galinda/Glinda the Good Witch (Oscar-nominated Ariana Grande).

What’s going to be this year’s “Anora”? As the Cannes Film Festival rapidly approaches, that’s the question for artistic director Thierry Fremaux and movie buffs around the world.
A month before Cannes Film Festival’s press conference, the official selection is still very much a work in progress, with little reliable information filtering through about which movies have already been invited. In fact, as of Friday — despite the volume of splashy prediction stories — it appears that only three films have so far been given a golden ticket to compete in Cannes. Variety can reveal that one of them is Jim Jarmusch’s anticipated “Father Mother Sister Brother“ starring Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver and Tom Waits.
The last edition of the festival, which Fremaux had warned would be slightly weaker due to the impact of the double Hollywood strikes, proved to be anything but. Headlined by Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning “Anora,...

The Mena deal was struck by Elie Touma at Front Row and Stephanie Fuchs at Austrian-based sales company Autlook Filmsales, which is overseeing international sales.
The announcement comes amid fresh pushback against the documentary in the U.S., where a Miami mayor has been accused of censorship after he threatened to shut down an arthouse cinema showing the work.
Shot between 2019 and 2023, No Other Land captures the struggle of people living in the West Bank Palestinian villages of Masafer Yatta in the face of attempts by Israeli authorities and settlers to erase their homes and history from the map. Karla Sofía Gascón addressed the intense backlash surrounding her Academy Awards campaign in a statement, acknowledging past mistakes and committing to growth. The Emilia Pérez star faced criticism after resurfaced tweets drew accusations of anti-Islam and racist sentiments. The controversy led to tensions with Netflix, with Gascón skipping key pre-Oscars events, including the BAFTAs and SAG Awards. Despite the fallout, she attended the Oscars with Netflix’s backing, where host Conan O’Brien made light of the situation during the ceremony.
In a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, Gascón expressed remorse, stating, “With no excuse, and without any intention to justify any of my past actions, I apologize to all I have offended at any point in my life and throughout my journey. I humbly ask for their forgiveness and, to honor their kindness and understanding, I promise I will commit to continuing to learn and listen, so as not...

“Emilia Pérez” star Karla Sofía Gascón is committed to “continuing to learn and listen” she said in her newest statement after her controversial tweets were uncovered and shared the new after Oscar nominations were announced.
Gascón’s statement comes a week after Oscars. “Emilia Pérez” was nominated for 13 awards and took home two — one for best song, and Zoe Saldaña won for best supporting actress.
The uncovering of the tweets pushed the actress to delete her X account in late January.
In her newest statement, the actress writes that “sometimes, we put on a shield to protect ourselves, so that harm does not reach our hearts, our skin, or our souls” and that she has her “own armor” like everyone else. “The problem is, precisely, that shields can be cold and hard on the outside and can also hurt those around you. That is what happened to me,” she adds.

Although it's been a week since the Academy Awards ceremony ended and many declared it the best edition of the show in years, some still have some comments about the winners on Hollywood's most important night. This time it was comedian Bill Maher who shared his hot take on this year's Best Picture winner, and how the victory of Anorawas more a product of "cancel culture."
In case you're wondering how "cancel culture" can make a movie win something, Maher is referring to the debacle faced by the Netflix musical crime film Emilia Pérez, a.k.a. the favorite that fell from grace. As reported by Deadline, the host of Real Time with Bill Maher spoke about "cancel culture," and he used the recent Academy Awards as an example:
"There are people who say cancel culture isn't a real thing and I would say to them, 'It just happened at the Oscars.

The Academy Awards ceremony saw the Netflix film Emilia Pérez nominated for several prestigious awards, though its wins were limited. It failed to win Best Picture that night, and funnyman Bill Maher believes this to be the result of "cancel culture" still at play.
On Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday night, Maher commented on Sunday's Oscars ceremony. He took the opportunity to argue that cancel culture is still thriving, despite claims he's been hearing that those days are gone. Maher argued that Emilia Pérez was clearly the "frontrunner" to sweep the Oscars before its controversies led to Academy voters snubbing the film. In part, that includes the backlash associated with lead star Karla Sofia Gascon, whom Maher praised for her performance in Emilia Pérez.

Bill Maher has his own take about what went down on Oscar Sunday.
While talking with author and comedian David Sedaris on the latest episode of “Real Time,” Maher explained that “cancel culture” was a big factor in deciding the latest class of Academy Award winners, especially when it comes to “Emilia Pérez” and its star Karla Sofía Gascón.
“There are people who say cancel culture isn’t a real thing and I would say to them, ‘It just happened at the Oscars,’” Maher said. “You may not think it happened but the movie that was going to win it all was ‘Emilia Pérez.’”
Maher added that “Hollywood loved” the idea of breaking down a major cultural barrier and having “a person, who was a trans person” win the Oscar for best actress. Maher went on to praise Gascón’s performance saying, “God bless her, she did a great job.

On a night that should've ended on a celebratory note, it ended on a sour one. Zoe Saldaña won the Best Supporting Actress award for her role inEmilia Pérezat the 97th Annual Academy Awards, becoming the first American of Dominican origin to win the prestigious award. After the win, Saldaña headed to the Oscars press room, where she was asked to address the controversy surrounding the film by Mexican journalist Cristina Ibañez.
The film has faced criticism for its misrepresentation of trans people, and the actors themselves have faced criticism for not acknowledging the LGBTQ+ community or the Mexican community during their acceptance speeches this awards season. Two marginalized communities are united in their opinion that this film and the people responsible for making this film were only seeking to profit from them instead of taking the time to advocate for them, especially during the current hostile political climate.

Zoe Saldaña was overcome with emotion as she accepted the Best Supporting Actress award at the 97th Academy Awards on Sunday night. The Emilia Pérez star, 46, delivered a heartfelt tribute to her family, her immigrant roots, and, of course, her husband’s enviable locks.
Before launching into her speech, Saldaña repeatedly called out to her mother in the audience.
“Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!” she cried, tearing up as she spotted her. Waving with one hand and clutching her golden statue with the other, she continued, “My mom is here. My whole family is here.”
Saldaña, visibly moved, thanked the Academy and acknowledged her fellow nominees—Ariana Grande, Monica Barbaro, Isabella Rossellini and Felicity Jones—praising them for their “love and community” throughout the awards season. While she expressed gratitude to Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard and the film’s cast and crew, she refrained from naming anyone else individually.
