What I Like about this movie

An excellent job by the director/writer. It is not a run-of-the-mill - No story, songs in a foreign locale, 4 fights and the Hero gets the girl- kind of movie, which is the standard fare for about 90-95% of Indian movies. After the opening bus crash you can guess to an extent how the movie will end, but still the ending touches you. You can identify with many of the incidents/characters in the movie. The main protagonists(Jai, Anjali, Shravanand, Ananya) have done an excellent job. And, the support cast was good too. All in all a movie worth watching. If you have been underwhelmed by the movies that have been released lately, you will love this movie.
  • Awesome movie........thanks 4 d crew who made dis movie. The story says about love of 2 couples, and about road accidents. 1st half is full of fun n love & 2nd half shows d accident n tragedy at d end. i loved 2 c it again n again. its such a wonderful movie. Bouquet to débutant filmmaker Saravanan for etching out a film that speaks about feelings of people and the value of every single life. With handful of characters, the director has come out with a flick that is filled with fun, joy, tears and other human emotions.

What begins as a journey in a bus takes twists and turns, and when we think all is well that ends well, a shocking incident happens. But hold on! There is no preachy stuff as Saravanan manages to lace the message with lighter moments in the film. For many of us road mishaps mean just numbers - the number of people perished in such accidents. Rarely we get to see the colorful life the victims enjoyed without knowing that death is coming close to them.'Engeyum Eppothum' attempts to take a closer look at such people. In a nutshell, it is the story of two couples who end up romancing in contrasting manner. They happen to meet at one point where a tragedy strikes in their lives.

First things first, since there is no provision for voting 9.5,i had no choice but this film definitely deserves it. The film starts with a terrible accident scene which is shown very creatively. This scene arises several questions as to what is in store. The Disjoint Narration shown is awesome. There are two main stories running parallel, but even their projection is beautiful. The Director must be given kudos for his brave effort in putting something original on screen without the fear of any repulsive response. The story is very well written and is very enthralling. The actors did a very fine job of absorbing the story and presenting their self on screen. Previously I have seen many good Tamil films but this one STANDS OUT. A must watch for any film lover who want a quality film. The Sound Effect is also very good, specially in the accident sequence. The Visual Effect is mesmerizing. Overall,a very good and strong story with good performances and above all A SUPERB DIRECTION. This is a film which has the capability of Winning Several International Awards if projected properly. WELL DONE M.Saravanan Sir.
  • Don't miss it!

Debutant director Saravanan's Engeyum Eppodhum is an interesting tale of the effects of a tragic accident. Accidents have more or less become a part of our day-to-day lives in the age of super-fast cars, bikes and the tendency among the people to live life to the fullest, forgetting the dangers that are associating with riding and driving speedily.

Two buses collide head-on resulting in a gruesome accident. The accident, unexpected as always, throws up many unsolved questions and destroys the dreams of many. The script travels through the travails and the tears of the passengers as we are literally 'made to' travel along with the bus deftly by Saravanan.

Jai and Anjali are in the bus traveling from Tiruchy to Chennai while Ananya and Sharvanand are in different buses bus traveling from Tiruchy to Chennai and from Chennai to Tiruchy respectively. The two buses collide with each other near Villupuram. The rest of the film is about who they are and what happens to their cherished dreams, desires and aspirations.

The film opens with the deadly accident and frequently gets into the flashback mode. Jai's tricks to attract the attention of the neighbourhood girl and their successive encounters are filmed in an interesting manner. Another interesting bit is the meeting between Sharvanand and Ananya; their chance encounter at the bus stop, which continues in the bus, has been shown rather captivating.

The screenplay is pretty interesting as it takes us through the story without us realizing that we are 'travelling' along with it. The love affairs between the pairs of Jai and Anjali and Sharvanand and Ananya have been filmed poetically. The way a college boy meets a girl and falls in love with her during the course of the journey is convincing sans any artificial air.

Small instances such as the case of a husband coming to the bus stand to see off his newly wed wife, the cook's case, the old man belonging to Jai's village, the story of a father who returns from abroad after five long years who is yearning to meet his child, Ananya's sister and the Muslim woman shown to be boarding the bus in-between, make the story rather interesting.

It's to the director's credit that he has shown almost all the songs in 'montage' version except for the song Maasamaa. Though the backdrop – telling the lives of different people assembling in spot with different purposes - isn't something we haven't seen before, it's the director's handling of the script which makes it rather watchable sans any drama.

Jai has put in a very subdued performance. As always, Anjali's acting is upto the mark; the mischievousness in her eyes while teasing Jai and the pride in her face when she says that Jai's her lover are admirable. Anjali's stunning performance culminates in a very moving climax. Sharvanand, playing a typical urban youth with good heart, fits the bill perfectly. Ananya has done her part very well; the director has toiled hard to ensure that the many characters that are shown in the script have done their respective roles fittingly enough.

Velraj's cinematography stands apart: be it the bus accident, the sequences inside the bus and outside the bus, his camera work is awesome, to say the least. Debutant music director Sathya has done a wonderful job with already three songs topping the music charts. Sotta sotta… and Un paera theriyaidhu… are very well scored.

Overall, Saravanan has done an amazing job in narrating how an accident destroys the lives and dreams of the many passengers involved and scores heavily in the climatic sequence. Kudos to him!

In a nutshell, it is the story of two couples who end up romancing in contrasting manner. They happen to meet at one point where a tragedy strikes in their lives. Sarva as a suave city youth fits the bill well. His cool and casual expressions are adequate for the role. Ananya as an innocent bubbly rustic girl who comes to city is impressive. Anjali as a out-spoken and straightforward girl in love with Jai is tailor-made for the character. All the characters are well-written and neatly conceived by the director. They resemble close to real-life. The narration keeps one engaged all through. The contrasting love, loss, gain and sorrow are beautifully portrayed. R Velraj's cinematography and catchy background score of debutant Sathya add solidity to the proceedings. All said, 'Engeyum Eppothum' is a whiff of fresh air in Tamil cinema. Saravanan has certainly made his mentor A.R Murugadoss, who has produced this film along with Fox Star Studios, proud. Finally my rating for the movie is 10/10
  • It's A R Murugadoss's maiden production venture. Fox Star Studios ventures to co-produce the same. With the likes of Jai, Anjali, sharwanand and Ananya in the cast, the movie has garnered a lot of attention. The movie is publicised as the journey of life.

Story is about two lover couples, their desire to get united in life. But what happens if a tragic incident plays spoilsport in their lives. A road accident involving two buses at a National Highway in Villupuram occurs. Meanwhile, a flashback unfolds and the romance between Goutham (Sharwanand) and Amudha (Ananya) and Kadhiresan (Jai) and Manimegalai (Anjali) is narrated.

A soft-spoken good-hearted Kadhiresan falls for a young nurse Manimegalai, who is opposite to his nature. She is out-spoken and practical in life. Amudha gets attracted to Goutham, who helps her in Chennai when is stranded in a bus stand unable to know where to go when she lands from Tiruchy for an interview. Kadhiresan and Manimekalai take a bus to go to go to their hometown, while Goutham also boards the same to see Amudha and open his heart. At the same time, Amudha takes the bus in the opposite to come and meet Goutham. What the buses collide is what the film is all about.

Performance: It is a tailor-made role for Sharwanand. The suave and stylish looks come handy for his character. Equally impressive as a chirpy innocent girl is Ananya. She continues from where she left in Nadodigal. Anjali as an out-spoken girl, who takes every step in her life with caution is equally impressive. She seems to be enjoying the good run in the industry, doing varied roles so early in her career. The real scene- stealer is Jai. As innocent young man in love with Anjali, he is impressive. He brings out the innocence in his character very well. There are a host of new faces in the film who bring freshness to the script.

Technicalities: If debutant filmmaker Saravanan is the captain of the ship, he has been ably supported by cinematographer velraj. He captures the contrasting lives in Chennai and rural areas well. The mishap scenes and thereafter are well shot by him. Equally supportive is Sathya with his musical score. Not just the songs, but also the background score adds pep to the whole proceedings. Kishore's editing is crisp and it makes the whole fare racy and riveting.

Analysis: All the characters are well-written. The narration keeps one engaged all through. One gets a feeling of travelling in the bus as the film progresses. The film is a mix of feel-good moments and at the same time emotional moments. Three cheers to Saravanan for making a crisp talked that is racy and riveting and at the same time carrying a strong message. My overall rating for the movie is 10.
  • This was a brilliant movie. It contained all the works to turn it into one. The director has done an amazing job and it's a wonderful debut for him.

The actors were perfect for their roles and they represented their characters beautifully. The music was a treat for your ears and were in tune with the movie. I heard that the director hadn't used any movie sets for the film, everything has been shot in real locations. The effort that he has taken really shines through the screen. The story line was refreshingly different and will keep you engaged for the whole length of the movie. A great movie will stay on your mind for quite a while after you watch it- and this one definitely stayed on mine! This is a film truly worth spending two hours on.
  • Warning: Spoilers
It is movies like Engeyum Eppodhum, that crops out of the blue and leave a stamp of admiration reassuring to the world that Indian Cinema is not just about cutting-a-bullet-into-two-with-a-knife or running around trees.

The movie takes, literally head-on, a serious issue existing today with our transport industry. Two stories are woven in the background to get a run time of 2.5hours and effectively convey the scourge. But the stories themselves do not bore you because there is a freshness in the way the two love stories are told. The chance meeting of Amudha (Ananya) and Gautham (Sharvanand) and how they end up spending one whole day running around Chennai is handled nicely(if not believably). Manimegalai (Anjali) as the flippant nurse and Kathiresan (Jai) a mechanic show how the budding artists are becoming seasoned campaigners. The acting is realistic and power packed, especially Anjali stands apart. The comic scenes woven around these two stories manages to dilute the tragic nature of the movie to some extent, but the screenplay and editing doing well to switch between the past and present to keep the crux of the movie afloat.

Hats off to director Saravanan on this debut movie and to producer A.R.Murugadoss, who we only know too well, whose banner has played a vital role in getting the initial responses the movie rightly deserves.

    Warning: Spoilers
    1. A 10 minute movie that shows in really good detail the horror, death, and destruction of a head on collision of two buses on a national highway. I would even recommend just making this 10 minute part a documentary and spreading it to (a) get the Government to improve infrastructure and traffic rule enforcements (b) make people be aware. After all, are ramp- access-and-entry-restricted (expressway), no-intersection, 4 or more lane roads too much to ask for, for every national highway? Is strict vehicle spacing and lane traffic too much to enforce? Is it too much to ask of and allow two wheelers and rickshaws to occupy a complete lane, and not zip through gaps?

    2. A fun 90 minute movie about two couples some of whom may / may not die in the above crash.
  • Finally, another good movie after Eeram that shows perfection in nearly all fields.

Fox star company has co-produced this movie. & the director has done an excellent job.

Engeyum Eppodhum is a road trip revolving around two love couples. Most part movie is shot inside two buses which involve in a tragedy nearing the end. The movie also features beautifully portrayed Flashbacks, and good music. The 1st Half shows the love story between the two couples, and the Second Half of the movie shows a tragical Accident which occurs when the buses collide Head-on

Hats off to the team and A.R.Murugadoss for making this movie and setting a mark in Tamil cinema
  • I watched this film at Sathyam Cinemas and I swear to god its one of the best Tamil movie I've ever watched... The story revolves around a freaky accident and the lives of the passengers in it. Once again Anjali gave a mind-blowing performance. Jai, Ananya and Sharvanand's acting are to be acclaimed too.

The story do carry a powerful message reflecting the value of life and how careless the buses in Chennai are. Not another cliché of Tamil movie as hero has to fight zillion enemies to get the love of the heroine or the heroine's father is a rowdy, no such non-sense. My rating would be 9.6/10. Thank you Fox Star Studio for a wonderful creation.
  • I have given 4/10 for this movie. More than that would be a dishonor for the top ranked movies here. Most of the people back home would love to watch a movie like this. The story and the drama prepares the viewers for a emotional cry at the end. All the four main characters are designed to attract the viewers like they are the perfect ideal good people. And a lot of scenes to make them lovable characters and pull the audience emotionally. All those scenes to make the audience cry at the climax scene. This movie has got a lot of appreciation from sentimental audience who crave for emotional movies like this. when amudha's sister tells her that even her husband wouldn't help like this. What a piece of comedy is this! Is there any guy in chennai who would not want to help a girl like amudha. The movie can be simplified in one line... Planned story to make the sentimental audience cry.

If you are an emotional person who wish to meet a beautiful boy/girl and fall in love then you will like this movie. For all others who crave for some realistic movie this might be a crap!!!
  • This movie really makes one to think a lot after watching it.First, the storyteller of the movie asks you then and there to make a note of the behaviors /incidences the fellow passengers go through and how eventually they were part of the ill fated bus.At the end,(after the accident) he recalls all such behaviors/incidences and makes you to realize how each one of those cost them to end up in such a tragedy. These kind of movies are very rare in mainstream Indian cinema where people make themselves set for a joyride before start and are awaiting happy endings once the movie takes pace. That is were the movie scores big -> It unexpectedly switches you to a different tone, different from the usual and anticipated climax and still manages to entertain you throughout.

Also, the way in which romance gets shape between the lead pairs is cool as always in any good romantic tamil movie.
  • This movie gets connected with real life, this movie tells us to maintain road safety standards. Even if it wasn't our mistake also, we will met mishaps in National Highways due to irresponsible truck drivers. And in addition to this, we need to maintain High Speeds which is recommended by the National Highways Authority of India to ensure a smooth and a Safe Journey.
  • Warning: Spoilers
When we read or hear about road traffic accidents, it is just a news for us. But the real people behind that & their stories are largely unknown & uncared for. "Engeyum Eppodhum" tries to explore exactly into this area which is gut wrenching. It leaves you with a heavy heart & makes us ponder over those who has & is losing their loved & dear ones in these accidents daily.

    M. Saravanan shows a lot of promise in his first movie. He has amazingly illustrated that for a movie to be a thriller it doesn't always need to be on crime , underworld , heist , so on. He has also remarkably managed to swell the viewer's eyes almost throughout the movie at the most pleasant of sequences too. For example when a father who is returning home from Dubai having never had the opportunity of seeing his daughter in person getting call from her or the newly married person who again & again getting off the bus and coming back to it to be with his wife or that cute love between two college students. These sequences would normally bring a warm smile to the viewers but here one can't help but shed a tear or two . And therein lies the stupendous success of M.Saravanan's as a script-writer & director.

Movie is not bereft of clichés but they fade into the background in comparison with the freshness of the concept & the characterization of the cast especially that of both the lead ladies. Movie has about 4 love stories each different from the other & equally interesting and endearing. There are many moments in the movie which makes you blissful & certain other which makes you laugh . There are others which make you gloomy & shed tears. It is an emotional roller-coaster but leaves you contended in the end.

Acting in the movie is first class. Anjali , Jai , Ananya & Sharvanand have done excellent jobs in that order. Special mention about Jai, his character is the most lovable one we have seen after a long time. As a gullible & innocent lover he steals the show & manages to stand up to the power packed performer in Anjali (when one has movies of such caliber in hand why would one act in such an inane character like in "Mankatha" )

Music is another strong point of the movie. "Govinda Govinda" is already ruling the charts while "Sotta Sotta" & "Un paer theriyadhe" are couple of delectable melodies. "Maasama aaru maasama" is a lovely folk number. Music director Sathya has a bright future in front of him.

Velraj's camera work is supportive to the narration . Special mention of the accident scene which he has captured neatly supported by efficient CG work.

I came across certain reviews which mention that the movie is slow & boring. But in contrast the movie is so engaging that I didn't even realize that it's 2 hour & 15 minutes length. Though the narration is non-linear, the script is so well written that the story travels in a lucid manner with no scope for confusion what so ever.

On the whole, "Engeyum Eppodhum" is a simple, neat & engaging movie with a hard-hitting message.

    Bottomline : Classy.
  • Engeyum and eppodhum (anywhere anytime) is a very good movie. I give 8/10 for this movie. I do not like Tamil movies with larger than life characters uttering some inane punch dialogue and interspersed with stupid dances and unnatural fight scenes. . I am an old man and not comfortable with the cinema hall ambiance of youngsters hooting and shouting and instantly responding to what is going on, on the screen. I saw this film on TV.

The story is already written by others. I am impressed with the fine acting by all the four main protagonists. Amudha(ananya) is a very lovable educated character from a semi urban area always suspicious of city guys. As a contrast, Manimekhalai(Anjali) is no-nonsense city girl and a professional. She approaches the marriage, not purely emotionally but realistically thinking of all the pitfalls of falling in love. Again contrast to Manimekhalai, Kadiresan(Jai) shy not fashionable introvert. One more contrast both to Amudha and also to Kadiresan , Gautham is a suave stylish but serious character. The episodes are well etched. Dialogues are natural. The acting of all the four characters is equally excellent with no overacting. All of these four when they grow old can remember this film as a hallmark in their career. Thank god, there are no irritating punch dialogue. I do not remember the songs, but I am of the view songs are not essential to a good film. There are no stupid dances nor are there any fight scenes. There is no fight director and perhaps there is no dance director in this film. It is most pleasant to see no evil looking villains with new methods of torturing the protagonists. The editing is excellent. All in all a very good film and Tamil cinema needs more such films than Padayappas, Enthirans etc. I concede that Padayappas and Enthirans will fill the coffer of the producers but these films are forgettable after a few years. .
  • This is one of the greatest movie from Tamilnadu and the new debut director Saravanan made a fantastic work. Actor all done there role that what ever they want to give. Cinematography is excellent Songs and background music are colorful and have good remembrance. From the movie starts at the cleaning of the buses, story of the movies travels with the bus that happen before the that particular days. A small love story the bus and that boy feels too much after she die in the accident its heart touching. and the couple man don't want to leave his wife she traveled with her and finally died in the accident all people who inspired in the movie will give some tears.
