The series takes place at the start of the High Republic era, which is set 200 years before The Phantom Menace. The final episode of the first season overlaps with events depicted in the first book in the High Republic publishing program, "Light of the Jedi", written by Charles Soule and published in January 2021.

According to head writer/executive producer Michael Olson, development on this show began in 2019, four years before it's May the Fourth debut on Disney+.
Voice actress Cree Summer, who plays the recurring role of Marlaa the Chadra-Fan junk dealer, previously voiced Kneesa the Ewok, one of the main characters in Star Wars: Ewoks (1985), during it's first season. She also voiced Luminara Unduli in Genndy Tartakovsky's Star Wars: Clone Wars (2003) micro-series.
