When reality begins to catch up to dystopian fiction, such speculative stories lose their edge over time. The same can be said about the latest entries in Charlie Brooker's "Black Mirror," a show once hailed as bleakly provocative in the best sense of the term. It's possible our current reality is so hopelessly strange that the show's cautionary, pessimistic stories can't help but feel hollow in comparison.
All the same, "Black Mirror" has consistently told timely, thought-provoking tales about technological excess, absurdist metropolises, and the steady erasure of everything that makes us human. The series brings a distinct vibe to mainstream television, one where we hunger for stories that push the limits of the genre while compelling us to slow down and think. There's a conscious desire for episodes that take wild swings, especially ones that combine the chilling coldness of technology with the warmth of human connection (which...

Since its debut in 2011, Black Mirror has remained one of Netflix’s most captivating anthology series' to date. With seven mind-bending seasons under its belt, the dystopian series delves into the implication of advanced technologies on individuals and society while blending relatable scenarios and thought-provoking science fiction with real-world anxieties, as viewed through a technological lens.
With its dark themes, social commentary, and high-quality action and production, Black Mirror leaves audiences just as uncomfortable as they are fascinated. If you’ve already binged season 7, which came out April 10, 2025, then here are 15 shows like Black Mirror you need to watch next.

She played the titular mom on How I Met Your Mother, but is Cristin Milioti a parent in real life?
That’s a question on the minds of many fans these days, thanks to a mysterious new photo making the rounds on social media.
The image — which was posted by the indie rock band Bon Iver — shows Cristin standing alongside the band’s lead singer, Justin Vernon, who is holding a baby.
View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Bon Iver (@boniver)
For obvious reasons, the family portrait-style pic has led to rumors that Cristin and Justin have welcomed a child together.
Did Cristin Milioti welcome a child with Justin Vernon?
As it turns out, the image is merely a preview of the photo book that accompanies the band’s most recent album, Sable, fABLE.
So no, Cristin does not have a child by Justin.

A confession: I binged Black Mirror while in the throes of depression and you’d think I was asking for psychological whiplash. Ironically, it helped. Not in a warm hug kind of way, but in the wow-the-world-is-so-twisted-i’m-weirdly-not-alone kind of way. Exams? Fomo? Work stress? Child’s play compared to the Black Mirrors Charlie Brooker holds up to our faces.
Netflix’s show is a buffet of tech-dystopia served with a side of existential dread and a garnish of moral decay. While some episodes left me mildly unnerved, a few left my brain doing backflips in a blender. If you think your Monday morning office dread is bad, wait till your own eyes betray you for likes, or society blocks you into static silence.
No horror movie has ever slapped me harder than White Christmas, The National Anthem, and Nosedive; episodes so disturbing, I wish I could Ctrl+Z them out of my memory.

Director Kalyan Shankar’s follow-up to his 2023 comedy “Mad” is neither fun nor funny. Titled “Mad Square,” with square as in the algebraic expression, the Telugu film is supposed to multiply with itself. It is understandably an effort at exaggerating the entertainment quotient of the sequel. With a string of bland, repetitive gags coming one after another, “Mad Square” is one flat joke. There is very less to feel entertained by, but a whole lot to be ‘mad’ about. To quote Math, instead of raising to the power of two, the film should have subtracted itself from itself.
The sequel places itself some four years after the events of the first film. With a nod towards the engineering college setup of the first film, “Mad Square” shows a band of engineering students being taken to a high-security prison. It is baffling why those students, possibly taken in for unruliness or some petty misdemeanor,...

There are only a handful of actors who have achieved the level of stardom and critical acclaim as Tom Hanks. Over four decades in Hollywood, he’s worked with a roster of renowned directors like Wes Anderson, Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, and Baz Luhrmann, building a filmography rich in variety and range. Known for beloved classics such as Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, and Toy Story, Hanks’ body of work has left a profound impact on audiences worldwide.
However, even for an icon like Hanks, not every film has been a hit. Alongside his masterpieces are a few titles he might prefer to leave forgotten. Whether due to lackluster performances, disappointing box office numbers, or poor critical reception, these movies simply didn’t live up to the Hanks standard.
From early missteps to recent experiments gone wrong, here are five Tom Hanks movies that didn’t quite make the grade.

Jesse Plemons is headed to Panem. The acclaimed actor has joined the cast of “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” as a young version of Plutarch Heavensbee.
Plutarch was portrayed by Philip Seymour Hoffman in original films “Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay” Parts 1 and 2. Hoffman died in 2014 after filming the majority of his scenes for the “Mockingjay” films, with only a week of shooting remaining.
Director Francis Lawrence did not use any CGI technology to replicate the actor’s performance, instead choosing to rewrite scenes and give Hoffman’s dialogue to other actors. “He was one of the greatest actors, I think, of all time and I just think to try to fake a Philip Seymour Hoffman performance would have been catastrophic and I would never want to do that,” Lawrence said at the time. “I just think this was the best way to be able to get around such a horrible thing.

Billy Magnussen (Black Mirror) pops in to guest star as a playboy on CBS’s Elsbeth season two episode 19, “I’ve Got a Little List.” Episode 19, directed by Lily Mariye, will air on Thursday, May 1, 2025 at 9pm Et/Pt.
And speaking of Elsbeth episodes, how about #18? The episode marked the end of Michael Emerson’s guest-starring run on the series, led by his wife, Carrie Preston. In an interview with Variety, Preston spoke about the episode’s lasting impact on her character. “It is our most dramatic episode of the whole series so far, and I think it is an important episode because of that,” said Preston. “We are going to see how it is that she overcomes it, because it does knock her off her feet and it really sends her into a darker place that we haven’t seen before.”

It’s been twelve years since Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evans gave us The Raid 2 — arguably one of the greatest action films ever created — and I’ve been impatiently waiting for a third installment in the series ever since. As each year passes, that third film seems less and less likely; however, Evans is returning to the action genre with Havoc, a new film coming to Netflix with an all-star cast including Tom Hardy, Timothy Olyphant and Forest Whitaker. Sadly, Havoc feels like an empty shell void of the magic that made Evan’s other entries in the genre feel so fresh and innovative.
The plot
Walker (Tom Hardy) is a tough and grizzled cop with a complicated relationship to Lawrence Beaumont (Forest Whitaker), a politician with a dark past. When Lawrence’s son, Charlie, is involved in a drug deal gone wrong, he enlists Walker to find his son and bring him in alive.

The co-ceo of the world’s largest streamer isn’t shedding any tears over the cultural shift away from movie theaters.
There has long been little love lost between movie theaters and Netflix. So, perhaps it should be no surprise that the co-ceo for the world’s largest streaming service, Ted Sarandos, isn’t writing any laments for the cinema business. The Netflix executive didn’t hold back on Wednesday when he shared his thoughts about the state of entertainment at the Time100 Summit. Sarandos noted that not only have times likely changed for good when it comes to how people watch movies, but that his company is actually the one saving Hollywood, rather than destroying it.
Key Details: Netflix to the rescue: Sarandos argued that Netflix is “saving Hollywood,” not contributing to its decline. Consumer friendly: The co-ceo also said Netflix is simply trying to meet customers where they are.

After scoring strong ratings for its freshman season, “Matlock” kicked off broadcast’s spring finales with impressive results that cemented the CBS show’s status as the season’s most-watched new series.
The two-hour Season 1 finale of “Matlock” scored 5.6 million viewers on April 17, leading the Kathy Bates-led series to rank as the No. 1 new broadcast series and No. 2 broadcast series overall of the 2024-25 TV season — a ranking that remained consistent when looking at delayed viewing data. “Matlock” averaged 17 million viewers across broadcast and streaming, according to Nielsen-live-plus-35-day figures and streaming data.
While viewership for the finale was slightly down from the 7.73 million live-plus-same-day viewers brought in by the “Matlock” premiere in September, the shift from the premiere’s special Sunday airing following”60 Minutes” to its usual Thursday timeslot might’ve accounted for shedding some viewers.

Paapa Essiedu may soon be set to don the dark robes of Severus Snape in HBO’s “Harry Potter” series, but the British actor will first be getting into the black cloth of the clergy.

In “Falling,” Essiedu’s priest and Hawes’ nun are both deeply committed to their work in the church and in their community. Neither are expected to fall in love. Much of the Emmy conversation around Adolescence's acting chances has centered around Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper, as they play the two key characters in the harrowing project. However, Gold Derby is now predicting that five total performers will receive nominations this year.
The four-episode crime drama is created and written by Graham and Jack Thorne, and stars Graham as Eddie Miller, the father of Cooper's 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is arrested for allegedly stabbing a classmate to death. Each episode is directed by Philip Barantini and filmed in a single take as viewers learn more about Jamie's crime from the viewpoints of the police, his psychiatrist, and his family.
Also expected to nab Emmy nominations for the cast are Ashley Walters as Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe, Erin Doherty as child psychologist Briony Ariston, and Christine Tremarco as Jamie's mother and Eddie's wife, Manda Miller. Cooper and Doherty are...

[This story contains spoilers from the Black Mirror season seven sequel “USS Callister: Into Infinity.”]
Making Black Mirror‘s first-ever sequel was a wild ride. Jimmi Simpson, one of almost all of the returning actors who came back for the season seven episode, likens it to “an artistic battalion.”
“It was chaotic, but everybody was up for it,” he says of returning to play his character, Walton, who is now running tech company Infinity in “USS Callister: Into Infinity” after the death of former CEO Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons) in the first film. The 90-minute sequel — which was at first set to be a series — reunited Simpson with co-star Cristin Milioti and gave him the chance to act opposite her not only in the real world but also as their in-game characters (who Simpson describes as his Caveman Walton and Spaceman Walton) as they voyage on another adventure to save themselves inside the immersive game.

Netflix’s critically acclaimed British limited series “Adolescence” has officially set its Emmy campaigns for this year’s Emmy race.
Star and co-creator Stephen Graham will be campaigning in the category of outstanding lead actor (limited), along with the rest of the ensemble cast, including breakout newcomer Owen Cooper as the young son accused of murder, competing in supporting categories, it was confirmed to Variety exclusively.
“Adolescence” follows the harrowing case of 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Cooper), who is arrested for the murder of a female classmate. The series, directed by Philip Barantini and co-written by Graham and Jack Thorne, has been praised for its unflinching portrayal of male violence and the radicalization of young boys. Each episode was filmed in a single take, a technical feat that has drawn widespread acclaim. The series was conceived by Graham in response to the rise in violent knife crime in Britain, particularly crimes targeting young women.

20th Century Studios has released the trailer for “Predator: Badlands,” the sixth installment in the beloved action sci-fi franchise. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the film stars Elle Fanning as two twin sisters.
Trachtenberg previously directed “Prey,” the last installment in the “Predator” film series. “Prey” was released exclusively on Hulu and went on to score four nominations at the 2024 Emmys. It would take home the win for outstanding sound editing. Trachtenberg’s other directorial bouts include films like “10 Cloverfield Lane,” and shows such as “The Lost Symbol,” “The Boys,” “Black Mirror” and “BlackBoxTV.”
Fanning recently starred as Russian monarch Cathrine the Great in three seasons of Hulu’s “The Great” and starred opposite Timothée Chalamet as Sylvie Russo in James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown.” Some of her former credits include “Super 8,” “Maleficent,” “Trumbo,” “The Boxtrolls,” “The Neon Demon” and “B’Twixt Now and Sunrise.

While there's still no word on when Star Trek's newest series, Starfleet Academy, will make its anticipated premiere on Paramount+, newcomer Paul Giamatti recently teased his "problematic" villain character that will surely cause chaos for the new recruits. Set in the 32nd century, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows the first new class of cadets in over a century as they come of age and train to be officers.
Speaking with The Playlist about his appearance in Black Mirror Season 7, the subject of Starfleet Academy came up. While Giamatti wasn't able to divulge a lot of information about his new character, he did tease that he was a "bad guy," while at the same time noting that he had an amazing experience filming the new series:
"It was great. I had a ball doing that. And I mean, again, during the Star Trek world, it's lovely people, and it was nothing but pleasure,...

Young Sheldon may have wrapped up its final season last year, but the hit CBS series has found new life on the world’s biggest streaming service. The first six seasons of The Big Bang Theory prequel series had been streaming on Netflix, but the final season joined the rest in the middle of April. This led to Young Sheldon experiencing a swift run on the Netflix charts, where it currently resides at #4 at the time of writing. The show earned a score of 84% from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it stars Iain Armitage as young Sheldon Cooper, Zoe Perry as Mary Cooper, Lance Barber as George Cooper Sr., Montana Jordan as Georgia Cooper, Raegan Revord as Missy Cooper, Wallace Shawn as Dr. John Sturgis, and even Jim Parsons as older Sheldon Cooper.

With Tudum now updated, it’s time to take a closer look at the top five most-viewed movies and shows on Netflix. The two lists have several surprises from last week, showing us what has been popular with viewers. They've clearly not been listening to the critics when they made their choices from the many new additions from Netflix each week.
The movie list includes a couple of films where the 'never mind the critics' element applies. That's a great approach. Watching what you like, not what you're told to like, is a good plan. That is balanced out by two strong family viewing movies that likely had an added attraction over Easter. And for a twist and touch of variety, there’s also a disturbing documentary film in there.
Critics also come into play on the shows. Although in this instance, they may be right, as one new series could struggle.

The success of Yellowstone is undeniable — the Paramount+ series repeatedly brings in big viewing numbers, and it's no wonder that other platforms are trying to replicate the format. Netflix's latest attempt at the neo-western genre is Ransom Canyon. For a new and unknown series, the title resonated pretty well with Netflix subscribers, and with just one week it shot up all the way to #2 among the most-watched shows on the platform — it only failed to outperform the new season of Black Mirror.
Ransom Canyon is set in Texas and chronicles the feud between three families that own ranches and are fighting to control the land. Yes, it's a pretty similar situation to what the Duttons deal with in Yellowstone, but the story managed to rope viewers in: the series accumulated 7.2 million views in less than seven days, which is more than Adolescence did this week (6M) and more than...

After its first weekend of release on Netflix, new Western romantic drama series Ransom Canyon has already made quite the mark and could be lassoing up a successful run. On April 22, less than a week after the series made its premiere on April 17, Netflix shared its latest batch of viewership numbers, and there was some exciting news for the romantic drama, but less exciting news for Pulse.
Ransom Canyon debuted at No. 2 on Netflix's weekly top 10 most watched English shows ranking with 7.2 million views, which translates to 56.6 million hours viewed. The freshman drama came in behind Black Mirror, which easily took No. 1 with 10.6 million views, rising from 7 million views the previous week. Nothing on Netflix is beating Adolescence's numbers, though.
Still, the romantic drama series made a strong debut, an ever so slightly stronger one than medical drama series Pulse, which arrived earlier this month with 6.5 million viewers in...

Less than a week after it was announced that Emily in Paris star Camille Razat would not reprise her role as Camille in Season 5 of the Netflix series, she’s already addressed her departure. Razat has appeared in 33 of 42 episodes of Emily in Paris, which is led by Lily Collins as the titular character, Emily Cooper, and Ashley Park as Mindy Chen. Emily in Paris was renewed for Season 5 last year, and Netflix confirmed just a few days ago plans to begin filming this summer in Rome and Paris. During a recent interview with TV Line, Emily in Paris star Camille Razat spoke about her exit from the series, citing the end of her character’s story but also the opportunity to explore new horizons:
"After an incredible journey, I’ve made the decision to step away from Emily in Paris. It has been a truly wonderful experience — one filled with growth,...

The Netflix weekly TV charts got an overhaul last week.
Season 7 of the techno-paranoia series Black Mirror managed 10.6M views in its first full week on the platform from April 14 to 20, which is up from its debut week’s 7.1M to put it in first place among English-language TV. Though, both weeks of viewership have been down compared to Season 6. Similarly, that season didn’t top the charts until its first full week on the streamer either, but it amassed 11.6M views when it did.
Second place went to Ransom Canyon, which debuted on the charts with 7.2M views, while Adolescence fell to third place with another 6M views during this interval. The limited series is now sitting at 130M views since it premiered, so it is inching close to overtaking Stranger Things 4 on the all-time most popular list, but it still has a ways to go.

There’s a new No. 1 on the English TV list this week, and it’s the long-running dystopian favorite that made you afraid of your toaster. Black Mirror is back and as popular (and thought-provoking) as ever. With 10.6 million views, the returning series proves once again that sometimes fans just want to break from reality.
Joining the chart with a bang is Ransom Canyon — the sweeping, slow-burn Western romance debuted with 7.2 million views to lasso the No. 2 spot. And Adolescence, the limited series that’s been dominating conversation for six weeks now, shows no signs of slowing down. It picked up another 6 million views this week, bringing its all-time total to 130 million.

The Alien franchise is set to continue on the small screen with an “FX on Hulu” TV series called Alien: Earth, from Fargo creator Noah Hawley, which is aiming for a Summer 2025 premiere. While we wait to hear a specific premiere date for the show, FX has partnered with IGN to put together “a tongue-in-cheek Earth Day public service announcement,” which can be seen in the embed above. On the IGN social media accounts, they’ll also be rolling out a series of short videos “chronicling the gestation of a creature in what appeared to be a controlled lab setting.”
One of the first things we heard about the Alien TV series – and one of the most surprising things about it – is that it will be set on Earth (thus the title), a couple of decades before the events of the first movie. FX chairman John Landgraf has said the...

In lieu of any news about a potential fourth season for quite some time, Heartstopper fans just got a surprisingly unexpected update. Netflix has officially announced that Heartstopper will end with a feature-length film coming to Netflix instead of another season. The movie will be based on the sixth installment in creator Alice Osman’s book series, and she will also return to pen the screenplay for the film. Wash Westmoreland, previously known for his work on Earthquake Bird, Colette, and Still Alice, has been tapped to direct the Heartstopper movie, which does not yet have an official release date. Filming will begin this summer, and the story will follow the couple of Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) as they deal with the challenges of a long-term relationship while Nick prepares for university and Charlie gains agency at school.

Netflix’s Black Mirror has been toying with reality, but the franchise’s latest offering- season 7 might be taking things too far. Created by Charlie Brooker, the series is a sci-fi anthology, exploring various themes. Most episodes are set in a near-future dystopia containing ultra futuristic technology.
The series is inspired by 1959’s American television anthology series, created by Rod Serling- The Twilight Zone– and uses the themes of technology and media to comment on contemporary social issues. Now, with Netflix dropping its first episode of S7, fans have wasted no time diving into the dark twists of Common People. Alternate endings and fan theories are already flooding the internet, some so clever and well crafted that they could leave the creator, Brooker, scratching his head.

I’m a sucker for shows about rich people behaving badly, and “Sirens” looks like it’s coming for the crown. Black Mirror’s latest season has landed like a punch to the gut, leaving longtime fans rattled and in some cases, walking away from Netflix altogether. With the arrival of the seventh season’s opening episode, ‘Common People,’ the internet lit up but not with the usual hype and analysis. Instead, it sparked outrage, discomfort, and a wave of subscription cancellations.
A Life-Saving Subscription with a Deadly Price
At the center of this techno-nightmare are Chris O’Dowd and Rashida Jones, playing Mike and Amanda, a couple thrust into emotional and financial chaos. Black Mirror Season 7 is back doing what it does best: poking at our modern nightmares with a techy twist and a sharp edge. But this time, fans think the show might be biting the hand that streams it.
One particular episode has viewers buzzing for all the right (and wrong) reasons, and not just because it hits hard emotionally. The episode’s take on digital dependency and the cost of convenience feels a little too familiar, and fans aren’t missing the parallels.

Some even believe it’s a sly jab at Netflix itself. When your own platform might be the villain of the story, now that’s some classic Black Mirror irony.
Black Mirror‘s “Common People” hits hard, and fans say it’s a brutal Netflix takedown

Black Mirror is back, and it’s already breaking hearts and maybe some NDAs.

Although "USS Callister: Into Infinity" takes place only a few weeks after the original "USS Callister" episode ended, in real life, almost seven years have passed for the actors involved. The season 7 episode does an admirable job covering up the signs of time, but there was one hiccup that prevents everything from feeling seamless: Michaela Coel, who played Nanette's coworker Shania, is missing. Her absence is notable given how sympathetic a character she was, and how she ended her original episode excited to start a new chapter in the game. She'd just escaped a fate that would've left her an ugly tentacle monster forever, and it would've been nice to see her enjoy her freedom going forward.
The reason for Shania's absence is simple: Michaela Coel is a much bigger name now than she was in 2017, so it was a lot harder for her and the show to get their schedules worked out.

Think your phone’s listening to you? Black Mirror takes that fear and cranks it up to eleven. With every twisted storyline and unsettling twist, the show has made us question everything from social media habits to our relationship with technology, privacy, love, and even justice. It’s not just a show you watch. It watches you right back.
Each episode drops you into a different world, but somehow, it always feels uncomfortably close to our own. Maybe it’s because the tech feels a little too possible, or the characters a little too familiar. Maybe it’s because the show knows how to make you squirm without jump scares or cheap thrills. It simply forces you to think.
This list features the Black Mirror episodes that left us speechless, disturbed, reflective, or low-key emotionally wrecked. The ones you can’t stop thinking about long after the credits roll. These aren’t just good episodes.

Netflix Sci-Fi Thriller Hit(Photo Credit –Netflix)
Netflix users have quietly rediscovered a 2022 gem that never quite got the praise it deserved at launch. Tucked beneath the endless scroll of titles is Spiderhead, a sleek psychological sci-fi thriller that’s been causing a stir again, especially among fans of twisted dystopias and dark tech tales. It’s got the DNA of Black Mirror, but stretched into something a little more cinematic and a little more emotionally raw.
Chris Hemsworth Like You’ve Never Seen Him
The film, directed by Joseph Kosinski and carried by performances from Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller, and Jurnee Smollett, throws its audience into a pristine, eerily beautiful experimental and futuristic prison where redemption is traded for mind-altering drugs. Inside this prison turned lab, a couple of prisoners volunteer to be guinea pigs in exchange for reduced sentences, but what unfolds is far more than a clinical trial.

In one of the more poignant moments of “Logout,” Zee5’s latest original starring Babil Khan, the protagonist earnestly proclaims that online social media is not a mere distraction for many. It is a world in itself. What “Logout” proceeds to tacitly depict under the garb of a genre film is that the same world is not all sunshine and rainbows, so to speak. It has pitfalls and fate’s cruel hands that act as a twisted leveler. Just like the real, physical world. Directed by Amit Golani and written by Biswapati Sarkar, “Logout” attempts to cram most of the perils of the modern online world. A little too much perhaps; yet it remains an engrossing watch with a commendable leading performance.
Babil Khan plays Pratyush Dua, known as ‘Pratman’ online, a social media influencer who rose to popularity via his “Laila-Majnu” skits, where he plays both characters. With a...
