  • The movie made big waves even before it hit the international cinema screens, because someone leaked the fact that a movie poster got held back because it was inappropriate and would have diminished Jean Dujardins chances of winning the Oscar (or was it just a publicity stunt?). The movie itself might be able to live off that controversy at first, but even after a few "shocking" moments at first, it'll have to stand on its own two feet (pun not intended).

Dujardin and his partner (in crime) here show a real passion for that project. They go places you might expect them to go. But even if only Dujardin is on your radar (the other actor being very famous in France too), it is a lack of emotion for both characters and the triviality of the whole thing, that might make you want to stop watching it. The overall idea was nice and I still kind of like it, but it's anything but special ...
  • Humour and vulgarity can be very close to each other. And if you are not very cautious, yuu fall into vulgarity. This is the problem with this movie. It could have been funny. It could have been enjoyable if the characters were not that extreme in their behaviour. Dujardin and Lellouche are such good actors. This is just sad.

It's reasonable to assume that Jean Dujardin will be a draw for this entry being more or less internationally renowned following the success of The Artist. He was, of course, fairly well known, at least in France, for some time before that not least for his spoof James Bond movies OSS. Les Infideles is something of a mixed bag and one of its assets is its cocking a snook to the PC brigade who do, of course, need much more than a snook cocking them. Guillaume Canet, for example, appears in arguably the briefest segment (though he does appear in others)and also one of the funniest when, on the verge of being exposed as an adulterer, and thinking on his feet, he throws the incriminating evidence out of a window, not in itself all that funny until we add that the evidence was in the jaws of the family pet dog. The bulk of the movie is shouldered equally by Dujardin and Gilles Lellouche and in the main they do sterling work, the next most familiar name on the credits is Sandrine Kimberlain, one of the finest French actresses of her generation but ultimately wasted here. Overall something of a curate's egg.

At the image of Dujardin : superficial ! No depth. Another excuse to add sex in a movie. Rien en finesse, tout dans la vulgarité.

This is not an exceptional movie. It is not thought provoking. It offers little social commentary. Its funniest bits are unfortunately its briefest. It doesn't even have a lot of gratuitous nudity, except for a few shots of male butt. So what does it have going for it? For one thing, it's fairly well written. No character comes across as stupid or even unsympathetic, which is already a plus, given the subject. The acting is great. The French really can churn these sexy comedies out and keep a high standard of acting. In part, this is because French films are in a bit of a doldrums, so I suppose good actors are working B films and glad to get the work. But there really is a European sensibility present that might not translate too well for American audiences. For example, the therapy group in which habitual cheaters own up to their sins is a scream. For one thing, everyone talks honestly and in a straightforward manner about their situation, which makes their lack of understanding that they have a "problem" even funnier. They just don't get it, and of course, being European, no question of a butch man-hating therapist, though she recites the usual litany on marriage and faithfulness. This may be the best longer sequence of the bunch, since their naïve inability to see their problem, much less admit it, tells volumes about European attitudes that, like I said, may not translate too well for Americans. Don't get me wrong: their blindness is exaggerated to the point of parody, but it is a possible blindness, something that allows the actors and director (in this segment, it is star Dujardin, who plays about 6 roles) to adopt a lighter tone. Imagine a Woody Allen treatment of infidelity about 20 years ago. Take away the narcissism, the self-indulgent and pseudo philosophical rhetoric, and you get an idea of the scene. Another minor plus: one segment has a 50 year old dentist carrying on with a 19 year student, an affair that we are told started when she was 15. Although Americans don't portray 15 year old sex, a self-indulgent age difference is normal. Here, the cheater gets his comeuppance not from a criticizing wife but from his paramour's teen age friends, who take advantage of his wallet and mock his willingness to play a young man's game. This is what I like about the movie: an economical and not so politicised treatment of faithfulness (or not), and especially a treatment that probably could not be made in America.
  • this film is actually very hollow to portray two sexual driven french guys whose only desire was to fornicate any average pretty woman they encountered any time and any place. they both were married but simply couldn't keep their zippers up. they were night prowlers in all the nightclubs or even in the daytime attending seminars. there were so many unnecessary ugly sexual intercourse scenes that only the wild monkeys would do. the whole movie was trying to categorize itself in the comedy genre but not even one moment you'd have a feeling to smile or laugh. if you think it's drama, then it was too shallow. two guys were prescribed by the screenplay as two attractive males to women, but with these two casting, only the movie by itself could make them attractive to women. they were just average males with average looks, yet the script endowed one of them so popular with women and most of time he could score, while the other usually by passed by most women. this is a very pathetic movie that was so tasteless and boring to the extreme. and i really don't know what made this screenplay to be approved into production. there's no purpose at all to have another pointless movies churned out from the french movie industries. the investors who invested on this shallow movie simply lost more than the movie goers who just wasted a few bucks. a movie you shouldn't go to theater to watch, not even worth renting the DVD.

Well, i have watched this movie for 3 reasons : Geraldine, Dujardin & Alexandra, Las Vegas. For every reason, it was a disappointment. Geraldine has less than 1 minute of appearance ; Chouchou & Loulou are an old grumpy couple that recalls Cruise and Kidman in Kubrick's movie. Las Vegas segment is a total failure: we can't really cruise the sin city as they stay in their hotel room. And the fact that the movie uses the same "showgirls" frame for Cheetah Club doesn't change anything!

Beyond that, the movie is dumb and stupid (especially the end) as it mixes the macho vulgarity for fun with the most depressive drama. The idea to have the same actors doing plenty of characters is rather original but my binary mind can't laugh and cry in the same time ! In other words, they should have choose one tone (eeither comedy, either drama) and stick with this !

Sex, French-style. Several vignettes, some long, some short, some no more than sketches, some better than others, some serious, most not so serious, "The Players" is about infidelity and stars the always reliable, indeed reliably marvelous Jean Dujardin and Gallic Liam Neeson lookalike Gilles Lellouche, each playing several roles, mostly as boorish, over-sexed males getting their rocks off with any female in sight and ultimately with each other. For the most part this is a fun film and, despite having several different directors, is much better than it has any right to be. It certainly shows Dujardin off to good effect and proves, once and for all, that his Oscar wasn't a one-hit-wonder.

Read the title. Hated every minute of "this". One of the last scenes (you know which if you have seen it) made me vomit. Don't watch this sh* with your family, don't even watch!
  • Engaging collage of the highs and lows of adultery.

They range from ribald comedy to actually locating a pretty dark place and not the dark place you would expect (I. E "JTM").

Really short ones cleanse the plate between the much longer ones. I can confidently say I've never had a cinematic experience quite like it though I dare say there are some parts I don't remember because they were forgettable.
  • This is not an exceptional film. Its main quality, besides the good acting, is to explore the theme of infidelity in a manner not "socially correct". This is a movie with several skits(7 or 8) some very short, others more substantial. The characters are excessive, lovable, sympathetic or repelling, comic or depressing ...

It is sometimes quite realistic, sometimes more fantastic or surrealistic, but we can find a little bit of ourself in those situations or characters.

The acting is OK, and Dujardin Lellouche are excellent.

A good time to spend, not necessarily with a square, except if you want to help him loosen up.
  • 'The Players' is a breezy French comedy, a series of short films (by different directors) on the subject of male infidelity. The shortness of each segment keeps it fresh and lightweight; but there's an underlying theme to all these movies: that (married) men just have to seek our additional partners. The various films make them look ridiculous; but also seem to suggest that infidelity really is just something to laugh about, that it's a simple fact of life and that the aforementioned ridiculousness is its natural, and only proper, punishment. I laughed in places, but it's a movie without any real heart.
  • Reading the reviews here people seem to think they came to see a sociological essay on infidelity and this is anything but

    • What we have here is a comedy a pee-stake a joke and it seems many expect massive depth research this is not what this is about this is making fun of poor behaviour from married men in specifically French society where the values regarding fidelity are really very different from Anglo-Saxon values. So many feel unable to understand what is going on here ... it appears

    • This is a collage of vignettes and long pieces and some of them are more successful than others they are also each one of them filmed by a different director which gives them a completely different flavour. One of them done by Jan Kounen was so rude that it was removed from the theatre copy and is only available on video I have seen that one previously and frankly to cut it out it's no big problem ... worth seeing tho

    • I watched this 10 years ago about maybe six I cannot remember exactly and could never forget forget this film for me the best cut is the one with Sandrine Kiberlain by far the best cut the unrepentant cheaters in a circle in a sort of AA meeting for the unfaithful with her as the leader and the only female in the room.

    • The look of boredom on their faces the lack of desire to be there most are there due to an ultimatum from their wives. It is impossible not to explode with laughter when she faces one of the attendees and asks him in a totally straight face "Tu la veux ma petite chatte ? " You can see the actors found it hard to keep a straight face doing the Scene

None of them return the next day obviously; totally failing to see why they were there in the first place.

It Must be stressed that some of the segments are comedy some of them are dark psychologically and very sad cause they show the emptiness in the men trying to justify to themselves or their friends why it is that they are doing this so in a way the in-depth psycho-sociological is also present here and leaves a really bad aftertaste

Most of the time we are looking at the two main actors Jean Dujardin and Gilles Lellouche showing what incredibly great actors they are I have seen both of them now in comedies and dramas and they can do all of it at a really high level. Sandrine Kiberlain is also an awesome actress and there are a couple of instances where we see Guillaume Canet who at the time was up and coming he then became a huge actor and director. It seems often people do not really understand what they are looking at you can see that from the reviews this is comedy this is a bawdy tale With some in-depth elements but just by the by the main drive here is entertainment and comedy and if that is the only criterium used I would certainly say this was a very successful endeavour; I then find out that Italians made a remake of this in 2020 under the auspices of Netflix and its title is Gli infedeli (2020)

Most reviewers seem to agree it is a pale copy of the French original I will nonetheless give it a whirl see what it is like

This one here though I highly recommend.
  • I think the only way you wouldn't be able to enjoy this movie is if you have been loyal to your partner for a long time and feel envious of the characters.

This movie takes us to some brilliant scenes with fantastic one liners through out. The movie flows between comedy and drama, and balances the two perfectly. Just when things start to get serious the movie throws you a fantastic joke, I can't remember laughing out loud so much at a movie.

The comedy doesn't drown out the character development and I found myself attracted to the personalities. The are engaging and interesting and you want to know more about them. The psychology of the relationships between characters captures you in the movie. It is quite philosophical in a way but the comedy stops you over thinking.

The body language in the movie is very good, there is one scene with a kid at the table with their kid doing homework. The two characters stare blankly at each other and you just know what they're both thinking, it's beautiful imagery and the cinematography is to a high level throughout.

This film wasn't directed to casually which it could have quite easily been with the plot. There were some intense emotions but it remained extremely funny from start to finish. If you're 40+ and led a boring life this probably isn't for you but otherwise I honestly can't see how you couldn't enjoy this movie. It's easy to watch and the perfect movie if you're looking for a great laugh with friends. The ending is so funny too, the thriller photo made me laugh way past the credits.

I really recommend this movie, don't let the reviews put you off!

This was a fun movie... This is the 3rd of Lartigau's (director) works I have enjoyed. (others I Do and The Big Picture--) If I like a movie will typically look for other films by the same director...this is usually the most rewarding way to find new things I like. The movie cost $29 million--in the 60s "million dollar movies" were supposed to inspire awe. Typical Bond movies today are half a billion.

This is a situational comedy with lots of uninhibited moderated tasteful sexual visuals if the last word is possible? shock value for American audiences... Woody Allen did a movie Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex...it was very funny for the time very "velveeta cheese" (bland and mainline) compared to this film. Lartigau does something similar with Infidelity.

The movie is a collection of vignettes involving some aspect of Infidelity...most feature DuJardin and Lellouche (both actors are 40). There are related skits with other actors...and also a funny one with a therapist session for cheating husbands. I enjoyed them all especially DuJardins company trip. The flaw with the movie is the vignettes seem to be one continuous story...and your brain churns about trying to piece things together. Either separate them better (if they were not meant to be related vignettes) or unify them better is my criticism. I am sure it was one continuous story (the ones with DuJardin and Lellouche) however a comment by another reviewer made me wonder if they were not. Again you experience some cognitive dissonance trying to tie them together neatly. Well I did.

The ending did not surprise me....hints were given...it was wacky.

So that said...the filming is talented the acting great. Afore mentioned problem is tie the vignettes together better-- The uninhibited sexual (tasteful for this type thing?) aspects are good for uptight audiences... although it is not one I would want to watch with my Mother.

    RECOMMEND

This is fantastic. I am very satisfied with me and my friends decision to watch this movie in the morning time after a very long night, also stoned.

Wonderful. I recommend to everyone who has ever cheated or been cheated on or just like some good stuff. Cinematography was very french like, nice women, also satisfactory. And the twist ending was one of the greatest things in the history of FILM.

If you feel like something is missing from your life then always look to your side.. maybe the look in your friends eyes is the missing link in your life. You don't have to hide your sexuality. Gay is good.
  • I must be exactly the right age and marital status to like this show. I didn't think it would be very good but from the very beginning it grabbed my attention and just wouldn't let go. All characters, young and old, married and single were very bondable (is that a word). I enjoyed from beginning to end. Amazon really scored on this one. Of course, had I been a year older or younger, or a year more married or single I might not have liked it so much. So, I'll just count it as a favorite French film of mine, no matter what anyone else thinks.
